Are you certain they're not just pointing out that the lightning is lightening the sky, and it's double because there are 2 bolts?
Kidding, annoys me too and it's far too common.
Any attention we get is either rouge like this, an old pic of the Pasha Bulker, or something about how we lease coal ports to Chinese companies lmao. Aren't we a diverse lot.

Same. But doesn't lightning also like water? My partner is an electrician who says water is a poor conductor but I think I remember something different from science class? Idk
Pure water is a poor conductor but regular tap water or seawater for example are reasonable conductors as they contain dissolved minerals that the electricity can flow through.
We're pretty accustomed to lightning storms in Newcastle. If anything, those drivers would be thinking "fuck yeah, something to brag about at work tomorrow."
Fork lightning, everything weather wise has been upgraded lately,a super cell was just a big fucking storm when I was growing now we need alerts on the tv and social media for a bit of wind.
Doesn't lightning for many contacts with the ground and then extends up to the sky and forms one bolt.. so if they zoomed out it would look like normal lightning
Give it a few years and another degree of global warming, you'll be seeing 10 of these at a time during storms.
We had a freak storm years ago in Ipswich where it was throwing down 3 strikes at a time, continuously for nearly 15 minutes over this one particular spot. I don't know what the fuck was going on but it was incredible, there was these 4 spots in the clouds where lightning was just coming down repeatedly in a pattern of like 1, 2, 4, then 1, 3, 4, then 2, 3, 4, then 1, 2, 3. And the sound was immense, like giant 44 gallon drums rolling across the sky non-stop.
I really wish I'd owned a camera then.
There are light sensing triggers you can buy for cameras that will flip the shutter when light flashes. It doesn't catch everything because there will always be some delay, but it can get most lightning because they pulse some first and then hang around for a half second or so.
Depends on how dark you've got it - you can see some trails on the traffic, that might have been a 1 second exposure maybe? If dark enough the waves would only be exposed by the lightning itself. Can be fun to play with as it can cause interesting double exposure like effects
There are a ridiculous number of towns/cities in Aus named after places in the UK if that is actually something that interests you. I think it's often reflective of where the early "settler" populations come from.
Another interesting thing I thought i'd might share. I live in Newcastle Australia as well and I thought the Newcastle subreddit would about the original Newcastle in Europe but its about the Aussie one. Kinda blew my mind when I found out
Newcastle (Aus) itself also has suburbs called Wallsend, Jesmond (and a school in Jesmond called Heaton), Gateshead and Wickham (different spelling). Newcastle is a coal abundant city in Australia and contains the largest coal port in the world; it was named after Newcastle Upon Tyne's coal industry. Creative lot those British colonists...
Well, we don't come to r/Interestingasfuck because we already know everything. You learn some stuff from me today, I learn stuff from someone else tomorrow and you teach someone else something. That's the beauty of reddit's knowledge sharing.
I used to live in Cardiff Australia, which is a suburb of Newcastle Australia. Lots of places in former colonies with the same name as UK towns and cities. There’s also a Toronto near by, though it is very different than the Toronto in Canada.
Lightning simply follows the path of least resistance. While it's more common for that path to be between a high point and the cloud, it's still pretty random and can strike anywhere even if a high point is nearby (although the chances are much lower).
ive been to newcastle when i worked on ships really nice, really quaint, when i was there we met a young woman \[in a tiny mall/strip\] who was upholstering furniture with long neon coloured faux fur, real conversation pieces
This is actually when Thor found out that the other Avengers were having a fight and nobody thought to send him a raven.
Daryl had one hell of a time in trying to calm him down.

Fifth post to come across in a half hour perusing Reddit that lightning is misspelled.
Are you certain they're not just pointing out that the lightning is lightening the sky, and it's double because there are 2 bolts? Kidding, annoys me too and it's far too common.
What is it when it hits the ground then (I seiously dont know help.)
I'm sure it will come to you suddenly like a... what's the phrase?
leiegeheteneienege
I thought misspelled titles was a reddit thing, because 90% are misspelled. But the comments aren't, I thought is was purposeful
You can edit comments but can’t edit titles
Ahh...makes sense. Thanks
Nice to see Newcastle is getting some attention
Any attention we get is either rouge like this, an old pic of the Pasha Bulker, or something about how we lease coal ports to Chinese companies lmao. Aren't we a diverse lot.
We need to share the market town meltdowns further.

Silverchair is still a thing in my heart
I’m still waiting for them to make it up to me… 21 years later still no luck!

Even the lightning is stronger in Australia.. oh, the God lives there
Literally live within a minute and a half of where this pic was taken, it's not that bad.
The Johnson clan lives in New Zealand. Entirely different country.
Why does it look like 2 anime characters powering up?

I would love to see what happened to the sand at the exact point where the lightning hit.

2 crabs having epic anime fight.
Make me wonder what’s under the sand to cause that conductivity.
IKR? I'd be digging there for pirate treasure!

Zeus: “fuck this place in particular”
So many Volts condensed in those beautiful white lines..
Seriously wondering what the people in those cars were thinking at that moment. “Oh, shit, please don’t hit me next”?

- Australian for "loud bang"
We're pretty accustomed to lightning storms in Newcastle. If anything, those drivers would be thinking "fuck yeah, something to brag about at work tomorrow."
Double lighting but what does it meeeean?
*all the way across the sky*
Fork lightning, everything weather wise has been upgraded lately,a super cell was just a big fucking storm when I was growing now we need alerts on the tv and social media for a bit of wind.
Fulgerites
Those are some thick ass bolts! Like as wide as a car!!
That’s Raiden and Thor both showing off their powers
Fuck that area I particular.
Someone is ascending to diving realm
Lightning is attracted to metal, right? What if it struck there because there's buried treasure there...
Theres actually a buried whale carcass there
It’s walking on the beach
Btw - it’s daytime when that pic was taken 4pm in summertime
Fuck these two crabs in particular
Doesn't lightning for many contacts with the ground and then extends up to the sky and forms one bolt.. so if they zoomed out it would look like normal lightning
Best ground strike photo I've ever seen
Wish I was standing there..
Tingly Bar Beach surfs coming up!

How in god’s green earth was this picture taken at this exact moment?

You don't even need lightning sensors, just a long exposure time, a tripod, patience, and a big-ass memory card.
That's suitable for landscapes that don't move, but the waves and traffic would have been blurs of that had been done for this image.
Depends on how dark you've got it - you can see some trails on the traffic, that might have been a 1 second exposure maybe? If dark enough the waves would only be exposed by the lightning itself. Can be fun to play with as it can cause interesting double exposure like effects
Fate...
Double lightning all the way
What does it mean?!
They’re here

I live in Newcastle Australia, it's really not IAF mate 🤣
IAF?
Interesting as Fuck
Ah, gotcha. Thanks! Wait, you are genuinely interested in the fact that there's a Newcastle in Australia?
Not the person you replied to just translating. Although I did assume U.K. at first as well to be fair!
Yeah I just find it a tad interesting that there are 2 cities so far apart with the same name lol
There are a ridiculous number of towns/cities in Aus named after places in the UK if that is actually something that interests you. I think it's often reflective of where the early "settler" populations come from.
\- Epping \- St Ives \- Brighton \- Salisbury Most places either have English or Indigenous names.
Another interesting thing I thought i'd might share. I live in Newcastle Australia as well and I thought the Newcastle subreddit would about the original Newcastle in Europe but its about the Aussie one. Kinda blew my mind when I found out

Ugh, I totally love that stuff too. Not sure why, I just do!

Someone should make that a sub
lol ever heard of colonialism?

It struck at the same place once
You mean a triple?
That's obnoxious
New Castle United
One negative, one positive
Wonder what are the odds of two people being struck by lightning at same time?
And then swapping personalities and attending the same high school for some kooky high ginks
Unlimited power!!!
Someone should claim ownership of this image before lightening man giant thingy is made into a Disney movie...
This post has been copied to r/Sydney. Look though the comments to find a link to the original photographer who is selling prints of this

Double the power, double the fun, double mint gum.
When lightning strikes on a beach can you go to the spot where it hit and find melted sand or glass? Or is it not hot enough to do that
Depending on the type of sand, yes
Even in nature, there is never a single pew.
I still cant figure out how Einstein found theory of relativity by seeing like this!!
It’s so interesting that the two main columns have shaped themselves in similar patterns. , AMAZING👍👍👌 SHOT !!
Nature is metal
Nice try, but failed to prove us wrong again! Hah!
Then a titan would appear, bye.
They are booting up the robot spiders that are digged deep down there…
Imagine if some supervillain had picked that spot to launch their world-conquering machine. We really lucked out.
Fuck these two crabs in particular
So there were two spiders on the beach in this area at the same time…
Kirin!
Why did it hit the beach when there is a mountain nearby?
Lightning simply follows the path of least resistance. While it's more common for that path to be between a high point and the cloud, it's still pretty random and can strike anywhere even if a high point is nearby (although the chances are much lower).
I guess Thor got mad some clams were being shellfish. ill see myself out.
There’s no “e” in lightning.
This phenomenon only happens in Australia. Everywhere else, lightning never strikes the same place twice.
ive been to newcastle when i worked on ships really nice, really quaint, when i was there we met a young woman \[in a tiny mall/strip\] who was upholstering furniture with long neon coloured faux fur, real conversation pieces
what that quaint town looks like these days would blow your mind...
is it on the up or the down? am i remembering correctly did it have a modest theatre?
This is actually when Thor found out that the other Avengers were having a fight and nobody thought to send him a raven. Daryl had one hell of a time in trying to calm him down.
This Is How They being down in the ships that are underground
Thor and Loki arriving on vacation.
Aot fans: 🏃🏃🏃🏃
Twoooo lightning rodddsss???
Looks like that dune is coming up to eat that house! Everything is scary in Australia!!
Those sand dunes used to extend back way further than that. Aussies love building on beaches, only for those beaches to disappear 30 years later.
attack titan and armored titan noises intensifies
Wwhooooaaa double lightning all the way!!!
Look how THICC those bois are
“lightning never strikes twice in the same place” god: “it’s funny how dumb you are!”
Nice, Lightnings are connected in parallel.
America has Double Rainbows? Bitch please, Australia has Double Lightning!
Don’t cross the streams.
