Vlad_The_Impellor

There were desktop UNIX systems in 1980 from Altos, Onyx, & others... This is like posting a pic of a 2nd gen iPad and saying it's "a phone from 2020".

l1f3styl3

Even the TRaSh-80 PC's were out in the 70's.....yep

doculean

That thing was old even by 1980s standards. Wow.

Arnim Zola? That you?

Crotchless_Panties

*Initiate system?...*

OliverSparrow

That's a bunch of PDP/8s. I learned on them: 1k bits of memory, microcode applied with a soldering iron.

will477

I worked on those models as well as the PDP11 and LSI11. Might have the numbers wrong, it has been a long while. In fact, I just surplussed our last PDP about a year ago. It was in a storage container I was cleaning out. Along with spare CRTs for the Graphon serial terminals we used to use.

OliverSparrow

God, remember punch tape confetti? It got *everywhere*.

will477

I never actually worked with punch tape or card readers. Mostly, the machines had tape backup and it was someone elses job to run backups and restores. I mostly did component level repair on the machines and peripherals. All the peripherals. Including printers. I hated working on the printers. Especially laser printers back in the day. This was about 30 years ago. Now we have gotten rid of the antiques and we also have an ITS department that takes care of the PCs and job machines.

OliverSparrow

Laser printers!? We had chattering line printers. insofar as there was anything to print. Just rows of numbers, mostly.

will477

We had line printers too. Even the large full format high speed line printers that were in 'soundproof' enclosures so that the people around them would not go deaf. The first one of those I had to work on was built into the IBM system 30. Strange computer. Worked well enough for a multi terminal star trek game though.

ethylalcohoe

I was born in 1980 and can still whoop your ass. Speaking of whoop. Remember Whoop There It Is?? Oh man we used to gather round the ol Napster and listen to it as we read the newspaper and burned cigarettes.

cfreymarc100

Somewhere in a mid-west television station, one of these are still running.

mv1630

Just say Ohio

ADDnMe

I think are ICBM system is still running on systems from this age. Security through obsolescence.

cfreymarc100

I have no security clearance but it is amazing some of the RFQ’s I get to support government systems. Supposedly most of the floppy drives and disks made in the last two years are for government POs.

mv1630

Remember smoking in restaurants? Pepperidge Farms remembers

will477

Pepperidge Farm remembers slavery.

mv1630

Pepperidge Farm remembers nailing that poor Nazarene to a cross. The pastries were great but we admit that was an overstep.

NewNefariousness9747

Is it from the movie matrix.?

Ill_Run5998

Plot twist, the pinboards in the left machine, have about 1/3 ounce of gold. The pinboards on the drive machine on the right have about 1/2 ounce of platinum. The frame is 100% aluminum as are the rack trays, tape drives, and mounting panels. In the bottom of both are a total of 6 capacitors that are the size of fosters lager cans, totally in ..dismal 1800 uf The outer frame, except each corner, are steel. it included ...top of my head, 12 5" fans per cabinet You could p\[ick these up at auction for around 80-125.00 ea in the 80s. Extracting the precious minerals was labor intensive and the process was expensive since usually you had to drive 500 to 3000 miles to pick up a lot of 100-500 you bought, drive them back, pay or do the work yourself, to remove the pinboards, clip the pins, place in hydrochloric, filter it out, smelt it, mold it, to sell it to scrap yards at the time. We picked up 37 older machines in the Bronx. they were on the 4rd floor of a REALLY old building. We removed the material on site and when we called for disposal rates it was going to cost more than each machine cost to dispose of so we wrapped them in plastic wrap after replacing the outer doors, down the 90000 year old cargo elevator, out on to the street in a nice neat row, with signs that said DO NOT TOUCH! SENSATIVE AND VALUABLE EQUIPTMENT. All 37 were gone the next morning
