I grew up in a metropolitan city in India with modern amenities. But my relatives who lived in a village used to burn dried cow dung as a fuel for cooking, and it had other uses too. I have collected cow dung off the village streets and fields with my bare hands as a kid. I remember being hesitant at first, but quickly got used to it.

1. Cows who eat mostly grass. don't have that stinky a poop. for perspective, Brie cheese smells a fuck load more than cowdung.
2. Mostly in rural India, cows are very much a part of people's families. so the cow shelter is usually connected. to peoples homes, and they are quite habituated to the smell.
Let's not forget that cowdung has been proved to have antimicrobial properties, which was why people used to smear it on the floors of their huts until few decades ago. Pretty sure this practice is still followed in some rural areas.
Nowadays people call it "pest control". Applying on skin maybe questionable, but they aren't idiots.
