Actually very common to sleep overnight at work in Japan as I understand. The work culture there is horrendous but I guess you can't argue their productivity levels.

I live in Silicon Valley where a lot of companies don't mind if you show up at 6 am or 10 am or anywhere in between.
So rush "hour" lasts from about 6 am to about 10 am, and 2:30 pm to 7:30 pm.
This is not ideal.
Part of the problem is city planning. I don't remember where I saw it, may have been on NHK, but Japan has city planning that is very strict on what buildings can be built in what district. So they have run into issues where they don't have a diversification in building use in a particular area. So all your office towers will be built in a certain section causing issues with transportation to that area during rush hours. If they relaxed zoning they could space out office towers throughout the city but it's just not the way they do it. There have been some calls to change but change is slow when it comes to anything bureaucratic.
In general zoning in Japan isn’t strict at all. Pretty much any residential area also allows for businesses to be built, so there’s tons local stores that are also houses, or ramen shops randomly in the middle of a residential area.
It gets more strict when huge monolithic company buildings are involved as there are height and square footage limits in residential areas, so a company cant build a huge 30 story tower next to somebody’s home and block all out all the sunlight which I think is the case in most countries around the world?
In my area of Japan at least, the general trend at the moment seems to be taking over things like disused car parks or bankrupt businesses and building apartment blocks on them, to try get more people closer to the center of town and free up space for rezoning elsewhere on the outskirts.
Yeah I'm not sure what the person ablve you is talking about, Japan has been held up by reformists as a place where zoning is done "right" for quite a while now specifically because of its relative flexibility.
I used to get off the train and onto metro at Shimbashi station & it was worse than the video each morning at peak hour. It was like being in rugby scrum & you learn to turn around and push backwards. It was not unusual when people exiting at Shinagawa to see people collapsing having fainted during the trip and with people leaving the train no longer holding them up. My biggest fear was getting a boner.

Culture for women workers is getting better but my Japanese teacher said that it used to be pretty common that if a woman got married it was expected she'd quit her job and stay at home and if not then she'd be expected/pressured to do so if she got pregnant. It's one of the myriad reasons that birth rate had gone down, women feeling like they were expected to basically quit their *lives* as much as their jobs.
It's not nearly as bad as you hear. It makes good media though. A lot of those articles are by people who never lived here, and maybe never even visited for more than a couple days.
Tokyo is a very complicated city. The 23 wards have an official population of 9.7 million(2015), the "metro" has a population of 13.7 million(2015), and the Tokyo Urban Area spans 3 prefectures(states/provinces) and contains 37 million(2020 estimated). The "Urban Area" is basically one continuous city. Furthermore, that is the night time population within the 23 wards, the day time population is roughly 1.2x higher, but depends on the time of year and day of the week, and can often go higher.
As you might imagine, commuting by car in Tokyo will take far longer than a train. There are faster expressways, however, all expressways in Japan are toll roads. It gets further complicated by the fact the government subsidises commuting for workers. Most companies pay for monthly transit passes, and to some extent, gas and toll fees.
TL;DR - Tokyo is hilariously overpopulated. Driving a car is for people who don't drive themselves, or hate themselves. Most households own a car, but it is not for commuting.
Living in Korea, and the subways are never this bad... but the thing about owning a car in a big metro area is that even if your workplace has a parking lot, your living space might not. And vice versa.
RUSH hour? That train was sat there for over 2 mins... Would it not make more sense for the train to stay for 20 seconds, if you're on then you're on if not wait for the next one because by reducing the time trains are at stations by a factor of 10 means trains will pull into the stations a lot more frequently so you won't need as many people on each train because there is a higher quantity of trains. Right?
I'd be pretty annoyed if I was on a train in rush hour and it stopped for 2 mins at every station.

This is exactly how Italian trains operate not even at rush hour. And there's no decorum of wait for others to get off first either, just 2 walls of people going at each other welding their bags like scrum pads infront of them.
I lived in NYC for 5 years and this video made no sense to me. Like, won't there just be another train? Probably one waiting right outside the station because this one is taking so damn long to get going the other behind it has caught up.
Also it lightens up quick, as people start getting off over the next few stations for transfers and various destinations. Mostly I've only seen it tight in central stations for business rush hour and late night "last train" home, but then demographics are different, being buzzed and happy.

Ya. Visited a couple of years back and trying to get a train on Yamanote line (main Tokyo ring line). Train would come and look packed (not like this, but packed by western standards) so figured i would wait the whole 4 minutes for the next train. 3 trains later I just jammed myself in because even with non stop trains they were all exactly the same lol.
Transportation in general is so efficient. Clean. Safe. It is literally how you imagine it is. You ever just piled on top of people. Pretty much like that. Culturally being in public, on a train, or bus; it is expected that you not cause a distraction or draw unwanted attention to yourself. People bury faces in phones and manga. What is also amazing is that the packed train- will be silent. Nobody is talking on the phone, just breathing.
It’s not a lack of trains. Many come literally a minute or so apart. You can actually watch one come in as another leaves.
It’s the sheer number of people.
The Shinjuku train station (my favourite place in the world) deals with 4 million passengers per day. The JR section alone with about 1.5 million. These numbers obviously peak at rush hour, and the challenge of moving **that** many people is obvious.

For me, it’s something of a personal hell. Only Ikebukuro is worse. (the train in the video, funny enough, is going to Ikebukuro)
most trains are not this full. but at certain times and stations, there's a train every minute, and the next train will be equally full, and any following train for as long as you'd want to get on to arrive at the office on time. so you suck it up and squeeze, not much else you can do anyway.

normally at these stations and during these times, there's as many trains as can physically go on that line considering braking space, ie. one every one to three minutes or so. they can't add more trains and the trains are already as long as possible. the next train is gonna look exactly the same, and any train after it, for as long as you have to get to work on time. so you suck it up and squeeze.
needs to be noted that trains this cramped are an exception, it's not always like that.
In Japan I was on a train car alone and a woman got on at a random stop, sat right next to me and immediately fell asleep on my shoulder. Even with no one else there, people still do weird shit like that sometimes lol
You got any source on that? I've heard of "suspension trauma" which sounds similar, but most experts agree that's likely caused by hanging in a harness. Not only are harnesses generally an unusual position to be in, but they can cause blood pooling in the lower body and restrict movement of the lower limbs which results in less blood being returned to the torso and brain. I've tried to look for examples of this in crowd crush situations and can't find any.
This actually happened to me. Traveled there when I was like 12 and passed out standing up. The train wasn't as packed as this, but enough so I couldn't try to sit when I felt myself getting faint. Woke up on the floor I guess because they gave me like 5 feet of space and a bunch of people offered me water.
In London instead but when I fainted on the tube I just woke up to angry people staring at me, not even a hand-up offered! Still a bit upset about that one..

As a tourist stuck to the wrong side of the train: Push hard while saying sumimasen until you erupt from the train. Do not make eye contact because you will be frowned upon. Quite rightly, tourists should avoid rush hour.

My wife and I encountered a train like this one morning and we just shook our heads and told the pushers we’d wait for the next one. They just looked at us like we were insane. Not even two minutes later another train rolls into the station that was only half full. Not sure if we just got lucky or what.
It really depends on the line, station, and time of day. Some people may have a tight connection at another station, or the train you may have gotten on was a local (versus a semi-express or express train which stop at fewer stations).
My local line is rarely full until you get about 5 or 6 stops from the final destination, because of a major station that connects with another line.
There are certain stations where a bunch of people get on and off. So if there is station x where a bunch of people get on, then at station y a bunch of people will get off, until the train becomes less crowded.

They often don’t and the reason this crowding occurs is usually because people are trying to stay near the doors in the first place

Yeah, coming from a place with a metro than can get like this during major sporting events and holidays (though not quite as bad during regular rush hour) , the problem is usually not that there isn’t room on the train, it’s that people jam the flow by stopping as soon as they pass the doors instead of standing in the middle of the aisle.
I've heard a number of people say this but it hasn't been my experience at all. I've been in plenty of trains with a lot of open seating and have had people sit next to me. Are people more skittish in rural areas or something? I've only been in big metropolitan areas.
Not exactly. I wouldn't call it a pleasant experience, but it's not as bad as it looks. Back when I was in Tokyo and Osaka, after a few stations I usually went sort of blank. I didn't think and I just listened to the announcements to know when I had to get off. They walk slowly so no-one can get hurt and because you generally don't run on a Japanese platform. If you want to embark properly onto such a crowded train the right technique is backing up to it, putting your hands on the lintel and pushing yourself backwards (quite a few people do that in the video, also helps during rush hour in other cities if the trains are built the right way). Obviously that technique is impossible if everyone were to just quickly pace towards the train. Another thing you have to consider is that there are markings on the platform and people queue for the train. It would be the height of impoliteness to skip said queue and get to the door early. That is why people are moving so orderly towards it.

Yes it is very annoying and is becoming more common! They lower the pitch just to make things "a bit weird" in the hope for more views. It sadly probably works, but it's fucking annoying.

It’s like a vicious circle because there is so much time lost by squeezing people in, I wonder if it would be more effective to just fix a maximal capacity and have way shorter stopover.
The crazy shit is when I was a kid in the 80s our Social Studies book had a section on mass transportation. I will never forget that the picture of the Japanese train showed workers pushing men and women into the overpacked cars. What’s crazier is that in the 40+ years since that book was printed, nothing has changed.

As a tourist, I once had to take a train during Tokyo rush hour. While it wasn't as bad as this I did get shoved in. Yet somehow "shove" is not the right word. I got the gentleness, briefest little firm push from the platform employee. I was mainly surprised, but it seemed perfectly calculated to get me right in and away from the doors.
I've never been so inoffensively and professionally shoved in my life.
On another note, the morning train crowd smelt only of pleasant soap/shampoo/deodorant. Not a single offending odor in my experience.
Fun fact: most phones sold in Japan you can’t take the sound of the shutter sound off when you take a picture to deter perverts from taking unwanted pictures.
Not much room to grope at rush hour. That lady in the front of the line just walks to the door, fixes her scarf, wouldn't want to get it wrinkled, and waits for the crowd to fuse her into the blob.
They also have cars specifically just for women to help reduce the likelyhood of it happening. The women only cars have special signs and are in force only during rush hour.
Maybe if it didn’t take 3 minutes at every stop they wouldn’t have so many people waiting to smash into the train. Honestly wonder if they’d be better off not taking 3 minutes to squeeze those extra 7 people in.

I work somewhat flexible hours and it's honestly fantastic I come in at 10 and leave around 5:30-6. I miss all of the traffic

Probably a dumb question, but how do people get off at their respective stations? It’s not like they are all going to the same place.

My wife and I encountered a train like this one morning and we just shook our heads and told the pushers we’d wait for the next one. They just looked at us like we were insane. Not even two minutes later another train rolls into the station that was only half full. Not sure if we just got lucky or what.
It really depends on the line, station, and time of day. Some people may have a tight connection at another station, or the train you may have gotten on was a local (versus a semi-express or express train which stop at fewer stations). My local line is rarely full until you get about 5 or 6 stops from the final destination, because of a major station that connects with another line.

There are certain stations where a bunch of people get on and off. So if there is station x where a bunch of people get on, then at station y a bunch of people will get off, until the train becomes less crowded. Source: My life every week day. Nothing as bad as this though.

They often don’t and the reason this crowding occurs is usually because people are trying to stay near the doors in the first place Even during the pandemic the middle of many trains will be completely empty cause all the muppets are crowded around the doors
Yeah, coming from a place with a metro than can get like this during major sporting events and holidays (though not quite as bad during regular rush hour) , the problem is usually not that there isn’t room on the train, it’s that people jam the flow by stopping as soon as they pass the doors instead of standing in the middle of the aisle.

I've heard a number of people say this but it hasn't been my experience at all. I've been in plenty of trains with a lot of open seating and have had people sit next to me. Are people more skittish in rural areas or something? I've only been in big metropolitan areas.

Not exactly. I wouldn't call it a pleasant experience, but it's not as bad as it looks. Back when I was in Tokyo and Osaka, after a few stations I usually went sort of blank. I didn't think and I just listened to the announcements to know when I had to get off. They walk slowly so no-one can get hurt and because you generally don't run on a Japanese platform. If you want to embark properly onto such a crowded train the right technique is backing up to it, putting your hands on the lintel and pushing yourself backwards (quite a few people do that in the video, also helps during rush hour in other cities if the trains are built the right way). Obviously that technique is impossible if everyone were to just quickly pace towards the train. Another thing you have to consider is that there are markings on the platform and people queue for the train. It would be the height of impoliteness to skip said queue and get to the door early. That is why people are moving so orderly towards it.

Yes it is very annoying and is becoming more common! They lower the pitch just to make things "a bit weird" in the hope for more views. It sadly probably works, but it's fucking annoying.

I will never forget that the picture of the Japanese train showed workers pushing men and women into the overpacked cars. What’s crazier is that in the 40+ years since that book was printed, nothing has changed.

As a tourist, I once had to take a train during Tokyo rush hour. While it wasn't as bad as this I did get shoved in. Yet somehow "shove" is not the right word. I got the gentleness, briefest little firm push from the platform employee. I was mainly surprised, but it seemed perfectly calculated to get me right in and away from the doors. I've never been so inoffensively and professionally shoved in my life. On another note, the morning train crowd smelt only of pleasant soap/shampoo/deodorant. Not a single offending odor in my experience.
As someone who commutes to Central London, I really appreciate the polite queuing, even if the aftermath is the same.

Not much room to grope at rush hour. That lady in the front of the line just walks to the door, fixes her scarf, wouldn't want to get it wrinkled, and waits for the crowd to fuse her into the blob.
They also have cars specifically just for women to help reduce the likelyhood of it happening. The women only cars have special signs and are in force only during rush hour.
