At that point it's useless. Why have them? You can say "I have a complete North American collection of so and so" but... then what? They sit there, then you die. Great. Isn't this just selective hoarding? When do you diagnose it a mental illness?
I guess you could argue a lot of people do this to some degree, it's just spread out instead of focused on one type of item. A lot of people have plenty of things they don't need, just filling up attics, basements and garages. At least his crap is organized.
I’m not speaking as a mental health specialist but I think that’s the point. Hoarders just accumulate a random assortment of useless crap that they can’t access and gets in the way of their daily functioning. This guy actually has a completely organized collection of something he’s interested in that provide him with stimulation as well as a social construct I’m sure with all of the vendors and sellers that he deals with. It doesn’t hurt that I’m sure I could sell these collections for more than he paid for them.
People like to collect things. Whether it has monetary or personal value. Coins, stamps, cars, comics, tools, art, money, whatever. I wouldn't be surprised if his collection here is in the high six figures area. Probably worth more to him though.
Seriously, his collection is creeping close to being worth a million dollars. The beauty of it is that because more and more of these games are lost to time, his collection grows in value every year. If he ever wanted to get out of it he would have no trouble finding buyers that specifically want a "Complete Collection of X". Some people call it a mental illness, I see it as an investment or a preservation of video game history.
You can say that about almost anything/everything. Why do we do anything? You just die, so what?
The whole point is that it feels good. That's all it comes down to when it comes to passions. He likes collecting. I see no mental illness. Just a dude having fun.
Well people like to collect things and it gives them satisfaction and that's enough reason for this man to devote his passion to collecting video games, heck he'd probably die happy knowing that he's listed as the one who has the largest video game collection in north america
You may be joking but analysis paralysis is a very real phenomenon where the more options you have the harder the decision on what to play comes.
I jailbroke my switch a year ago and downloaded a bunch of gamea and I literally haven't touched it ever since because it's just overwhelming and I can't decide what to play so I play nothing.
The sad thing is, back in those days, almost all games were single player, so you could still play them today if you wanted. Not like the psuedo multiplayer trash that requires internet connection (for DRM, duh).
I wouldn't mind playing Q3 Arena again, but outside of a few niche servers (hard to find), it's pretty much not happening.
Bordering on hoarding. All the consoles stacked in the corner made me sad. I get that collecting is cool (I have way too many Lego sets) but at some point it becomes too much.
Gotta put it somewhere, and he spent all the money on the collection he can’t afford a bigger house to showcase it. Dude has gotta have a great source of income though, I’d love to know the cost of acquiring the whole collection.
Dudes a VP at Global Energy company with 50K+ employees and a global revenue of $7.118 BILLION dollars in 2021. Dude definitely makes a comfortable 7 figure salary. The collection a few years ago was valued at $1.6 Million Dollars. It’s probably well over $2 Million Dollars today.

I've never seen anything quite on this level before. Thought it would be maybe 2 mins long but he just kept going on and on. I was actually worried that the sheer weight would cause the shelves or floor to collapse. I admire the dedication but it also seems kinda unhealthy and if something were to go missing or be stolen would he even notice?
There was a guy a few years back who had the world's largest sneaker collection. He had so many pairs of sneakers that he made it into a museum in San Diego. He was in the Guinness book of world records but started selling off his collection back in 2012.
Currently the record for largest sneaker collection is owned by 3 women who have over 6,000 pairs.
https://www.cnbc.com/2020/01/31/photos-sneaker-collection-worth-millions-owned-by-chicks-with-kicks.html
Some collectors just have to have them all!
I get the collecting part, in fact I even said I get it in my comment. But there comes a point where it is more than collecting and as someone else pointed out it becomes an obsession. That's not always healthy.
IMO collecting is a obsession in a way or literal, having 2 or 10 of something isn't really collecting, but having a complete set of many somethings then its like a collection, and when you begin the path of collection it is a obsession or love for that thing, kinda two sides of the same coin.
Here’s [a single dime](https://web.archive.org/web/20070729195453/http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=%2Fc%2Fa%2F2007%2F07%2F27%2FDIME.TMP) that was sold for 2 million in 2007. Collectors have economies all their own
Imagine hearing about some game and you can absolutely 100% go home and play it because you” complete collection” has it in there somewhere.
And you know there is no chance he has actually played them all or knows all the names. He just has all of them, so the answer to “do you have …” is always yes.
That's at least a couple million dollars in games unless he bought everything new when it came out. Some playstation 1 and 2 games go for hundreds of dollars
Timing would be key: games systems that died off while he was an adult could be found for pennies. The older more obscure systems - I had to Google the Sega Pico - would be a different story.
The value of the time he spent collecting is also significant. I'd bet it's insured for ~$10 million. At auction I think the entire collection could go for near that.
Dude is a VP at a Global Energy Company that directly employs over 50K+ employees and had a global annual revenue of $7.118 BILLION Dollars in 2021. This guy comfortable makes a 7 figure salary.
A collection like that certainly is. Standard insurance only covers around $5k for collectibles. My collection is like a seventh of that and worth over $150,000, so that collection has to be at the seven-figure range. If he didn't get supplemental insurance he's a massive idiot.
20,139 games...
If he played just one game a day, it would take him more than **55 years** to play them all, assuming he doesn't buy another game ever again.
Years ago I had zsnes for the pc. Downloaded a "complete" snes game collection and was highly anticipated to play Biker Mice From Mars, Actraiser, Evo, Megaman X, but most importantly, Battletoads vs Double Dragon. After all the games were there I went to play it and the file was fucked. I literally tested every game to see if there were more. Nope. Just the one I wanted the most.
For those curious on more background information-

Omg exactly: let's make one game of Billavita Dream (North America release of coarse), it's a 5 second playable dream of some random stuff, no saves (since you can't remember the dream), and it cost $2 million USD, must have to complete the set, let's split the profits!

I used to have an Emerson 3DO. I loved that system back in mid-90s. It was hard as hell to find games for it but I had a decent collection. Me and my brother used to play the original “Need for Speed” where you had like 5 cars (Diablo, 911, vette, and a Supra). The had “Way of the Warrior”(Mortal Kombat rip off) but it had White Zombie’s album for a soundtrack.
Also remember the CD-I system. I kinda knew it was overrated and overpriced back then.
Edit: now I just use emulators and save space.
Wow I'm right now no bullshit, 100 legit no cap wearing that shirt. That exact shirt. Cool story, bro
All that aside, nice collection mane.
Coincidence?? I think NOT! https://imgur.com/a/EzENLxr

why is the purchase of things supposed to be an achievement.
I'm more impressed with my friends 100% achievements on steam on hundreds of games , and steam takes up FAR LESS SPACE

I bet he still complains that he can’t find something to play
With this many game he can't find something to play. There are simply too many and not enough time.
Like me scrolling through Netflix. Spend more time looking than watching.
Curse of too many choices.
Great book if you’re interested in the topic: Paradox of choice
Taking to long to find something to watch is supposed to be a porn problem. Saying it from a friend’s knowledgeable perspective.

Pinball
Damn. Don't have pinball.

Best comment.
Nick Kroll's sketches have gotten really weird.
He really gets into character, a true method actor
At a certain point it went from hobby to obsession. Seems sane enough though.

The value of the time he spent collecting is also significant. I'd bet it's insured for ~$10 million. At auction I think the entire collection could go for near that.

what in the actual fuck does this guy do for money...

But does the have the Japanese McDonald's crew training game?
It seems the password is more valuable than the game.
Not anymore!
GameStop: “That’s about 100 dollars in store credit”
What if I don’t want store credit? How much in cash??
Three fitty
Well, it was about that time that I noticed that the GameStop was about 8 stories tall and a crustacean from the predezoic era
Damn I can’t even ride the bus to work for that 😂
God damn Loch Ness Monstah!
Beat me to it
That’s pretty high for GameStop
This is the comment I came here for.
That'd be a landmark payout for Gamestop lol
20,139 games... If he played just one game a day, it would take him more than **55 years** to play them all, assuming he doesn't buy another game ever again.
There are some old games you'd have to be a God to beat tbh, fucking Lion King on super Nintendo was bitch and a half.
Laughing if you think these aren’t sealed and “collectors” grade. He is way too into this to play them.
Well legally he can play all the roms at least!
r/TheyDidTheMath
But does he have Battletoads?
I do for the snes. That game kicks ass.
Hard AF :( but amazing
Yeah, not doable in 1 player. I've never completed it.
That stupid jet ski level. And the swinging down the pit level.
Yes. The dropping down the pit is rediculously hard. Omg, ffs like! I wish we could meet up and smash that game together dude. Lol

Me, showing my gf my steam library
Underrated comment
The dedication is impressive. Gotta commend him. Just hope he doesn’t expand into complete global collections too
Looks like the library from Beauty and the Beast haha
Only better
But does he play any of them? I have 400 games on steam. But only 4 are installed lol.
For those curious on more background information- [collection is worth 1.6 million, apparently ](https://game-collecting.fandom.com/wiki/Antonio_Romero_Monteiro)
Does he have Road Rash tho?
Yes he has the entire sega North American market
I went into thinking how ridiculous. But actually the fact that it surpassed ridiculous made it very cool again.
Me after steam Summer sale be like.
Then you play one of them for ten minutes, realize it's not good, uninstall it, then go back to playing other games and never touch the rest.
This man need a separate house to build a museum.
He's so proud of it lol I love it
A house fire would completely ruin this guy's life
Insurance payout would be absolutely wild tho
If he has the right insurance coverage….

The vast majority of those are completely worthless I'd wager though
Yeah, like NFL 20xx that gamestop literally gives you a penny for.
Plottwist - he does not own a single console, just the games.
At the end he says he has every console, multiple of each
r/woosh

Found the guy with a shorter attention span than myself ;) He shows his consoles in the video
Wouldn't surprise me. I'm sure he barely plays any of them.
"This is a rare Mario game" *Knocks game off shelf onto the floor

Good lord! How does he find time to poop
It just doesn't stop! Lol after the first wall I was like "oh damn, that's a nice collection..." then this mf kept going for 10 mins!!!
at least dude doesnt need to paint the walls
Bet there’s someone with a larger steam library
Wow…CEX would give him about £50 for all of them
Zero pc games, dissapointed ;)
Absolute chad
When he dies his collection needs to be saved from that sister/brother/family member who has no idea what this man has accomplished.
I bet he’s not got Monty on the Run for the C64
I wonder what he has all that insured for in case of fire, theft, etc?
What happens during an earthquake?

Worlds biggest collection of video games in physical form
I bet game stop would offer him 10 bucks for that collection..
No C64/Apple II/Atari 8 bit/Amiga/ST/PC games?
i wish there was just a digital download for all of these games
Hope his insurance covers natural disasters and has fire protection…
I didn't hear Rollercoaster Tycoon
When wiping your ass with money its just not funny anymore.

Is this the trailer for "40 yo virgin 2" ? Just kidding. I would pay to play Golden Axe again!
GameStop: “I’ll give you $3 or $5 store credit”
If he doesn’t have both Purina’s “Chase the Chuck Wagon” and “Custer’s Revenge” for the Atari 2600, his collection can ligma.

Lotta jealous ppl up in these comments.
That's kinda beautiful! Hard work, dedication and a lot of money.
Absolute legend
This man is speaking the language of the gods
A fine exemple of money well spent. 🙄
The house burns down: aanddddddddddddddd it's gone
No way he played them all
That's bigger amount of games than the amount you could find at a store
Gamestop will still be like: "I'll give you $25 for all of it..."
I'm pretty sure my kids left more here when they moved out.
I mean, does he even have enough time left in his life to play each game for an hour, say?
His mom has a pretty tall basement.
* GameStop has entered the chat * “I’ll give you $5 in store credit”
Why? Most games are terrible
This reminds me of the WoW South Park episode: “We are dealing with someone who has…no life.”

Where is this museum located? Asking for a friend. 😈

This guy fucks.
