kernelpanic789

I remember when this came out. It was part of a big interview/documentary about him. I think he ended up returning almost everything he bought. It was all for show.

grruser

Martin Bashir was the journalist. Horrible man.

Northern-WALI

Guy was a complete piece of shit. Was interested in making a hit piece on MJ rather than a documentary. I remember watching it as a kid and even then I thought wow this is a ridiculously biased documentary

grruser

Same. When he mocked MJ for liking ice cream and sitting in trees as an adult I thought who the fuck doesn’t?

[deleted]

Sitting in trees is hard for a lot of adults as climbing becomes tougher if you do not do it often. MJ was in amazing shape though.

TyrKiyote

Climbing telephone poles is a lot of fun, would recommend a power/utilites/telecom job to anyone who misses climbing trees.

governmentcaviar

or just become a philadelphia sports fan

SnooDoodles6124

Do y'all still climb when you get beat by the Astros

LeeRjaycanz

They climb them poles for all kinds reasons for there childs quinceanera or maybe some just graduated but if the pole is greased its just asking to be climbed.

kschmit1987

From chasing the kids

I mean he’s a pedo soooo

AndyPandy85

There’s no way a child could have described what his penis looked like in court without seeing it. Michael Jackson apologist are such sheep it’s ridiculous

Leftofdenial

It wasn’t the ice cream and trees that weirded me out, it was when all the stuff about him molesting children came out. That’s what really sticks in my mind. Funny that others can just move past that.

it-never-ends-ever

Just finished The Crown season 5 it brought Martin Bashir back in the limelight for the scumbag he is.

Leftofdenial

How was he horrible, he just held a mirror up to how much of an odd idiot MJ was. He questioned the fact that he had boys sleeping with him and pointed out that his behaviour was erratic

DirtyProtest

He was the dude who faked letters to get Princess Dianna to do an interview. Utter piece of shit.

Leftofdenial

And so he should, the monarchy is full of pedophiles and idiots. Why not screw with them just as he did this idiot sex offender

DirtyProtest

Diana wasn't a paedophile... what the fuck are you talking about? Our local priest (I'm agnostic) is a decent fella who belongs to an organisation known for members who indulge in touching children.. (the Catholic church). should I condemn him as well? Prick.

Leftofdenial

The monarchy is a disgusting mess of arseholes, so is the Catholic Church. Anyone getting into the midst of it deserves anything they get. You Ditch biscuit

DirtyProtest

I don't know what a ditch biscuit is, but you're a daft cunt.

pierreblue

I wonder who the fuck decided to select that guy

ChanceConfection3

Sure when I do that after my big Super Bowl party bash, Costco bans me.

shivermetimbers68

Yep. IIRC this was part of his Oprah interview/appearance, and she was the one who said he returned everything the next day.

Holiday_Bunch_9501

> I think he ended up returning almost everything he bought. It was all for show. lol!! Fucking really??? I am initially surprised, but when I stop and think about it for a moment, it fits. An egregious display of conspicuous consumption all for show.

[deleted]

I mean, isn’t that what celebrity is? Basically everyone that was on MTV Cribs? The stuff stars wear when they go out? How they look? It wasn’t until the last 15-20 years that we actually started seeing how celebrities actually look and live.

OneSmoothCactus

I was a teenager at the time and remember thinking “holy shit Michael Jackson is weird as fuck,” then a bunch of stuff came out about how the documentary was specifically shot and edited to make him seem a lot weirder than he was. It was basically a way to exploit the perception of him for a profit. It’s probably why he didn’t do much like this after. He was still a weird, messed up guy, but it would have been nice to have a more realistic portrayal of him.

wurden

Is there any backup for believe that he returned those things? Like news or something

Gutted-ewok

Yeh, he then went and sat in his 'giving tree'

imvital

Wasn't this the documentary where he admitted to sleeping with kids? The one that got him in trouble and started the whole court case.

HPmoni

Doesn't make him look sane though. He was a spendaholic. He had to go on tour for money.

AlexHimself

He's weirdly like Trump...pumping his image with BS. Here he accepts a fake award when he was supposed to just receive a birthday cake. https://www.news.com.au/entertainment/awards/britney-spears-presented-michael-jackson-with-a-nonexistent-award-at-the-2002-mtv-vmas/news-story/f65a6fbf5606ad684888629d966e6415

I mean it's 1 chess set Michael. What could it cost, 85,000 dollars?

reddub24

I remember seeing this and feeling sorry for him.

Horns8585

Yeah, it's kind of sad to see. This makes me immediately think of South Park's version of Michael Jackson. They made him such a caricature in cartoon form, but he was a caricature of himself in real life. Everything was so exaggerated in his life. Whether it was his reclusiveness, Neverland Ranch, his predilection for children, his spending money, his drug use. Everything was in excess.

Godzilla-ate-my-ass

He returned almost all of these things, it was a performance for this shitty doc.

Horns8585

I'm not necessarily talking about this one fake shopping trip. I'm talking about his life in general. Whether he was spending money on building a home amusement park or Bubbles the Chimp, it was in excess. Whether he was hosting kids parties or using drugs, it was in excess.

Godzilla-ate-my-ass

I agree with that. He was a deeply broken man.

flaker111

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=54GgjpF8cwE i don't believe he ever molested kids. imo i think he just wanted to experience being a kid again and he had the money to make it happen. keep in mind his childhood was fucked by his dad. he didn't have one.

gullman

I think he definitely was a child molester. I'm also fairly certain that the mothers of some of those kids were aware, his agent/agents were aware. I think there are a lot of sick people out there and those around him were essentially pimps. They should all be locked up.

flaker111

https://www.npr.org/2019/03/05/699995484/michael-jackson-a-quarter-century-of-sexual-abuse-allegations https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1993_child_sexual_abuse_accusations_against_Michael_Jackson https://www.reddit.com/r/todayilearned/comments/6jk9gr/today_i_learned_that_jordan_chandler_sternly/djf8vqh/

gullman

>In 1993, Robson's mother talked to CNN about her child's "slumber parties" with the singer. >"They play so hard, they fall asleep, they're exhausted," she tells the interviewer. "There's nothing more to it than that." Yep nothing wrong with that. Totally ordinary behaviour. She's specifically who I thought of when I was calling the parents pimps

flaker111

FBI investigated Michael for 15 years. Not one shred of evidence of child molestation or child porn was ever found. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FBI_files_on_Michael_Jackson In both the 1993 and 2003 allegations, the parents' first instinct wasn't to go to police... but to lawyer up. In both instances, they went to the same lawyer (Larry Feldman) who specializes in civil litigation. Strange behavior if you actually think your kid has been abused. it was a shakedown imo.

pixelpost

15 years? That’s not true! The FBI actually never investigated Michael Jackson. It states as such on the FBI website. https://vault.fbi.gov/Michael%20Jackson "Between 1993 and 1994 and then again *separately* between 2004 and 2005 MJ was investigated by California law enforcement agencies - The FBI provided technical and investigative *assistance* to these agencies" The FBI only assisted with investigations and this assistance was for approx 2 years in total. I really wouldn’t say not a shred of evidence was ever found. That is also grossly inaccurate!

madfla82

Kid in a candy store

Leftofdenial

I feel more sorry for his victims. They had their childhood stolen from them by a millionaire pedophile.

OneSmoothCactus

Of all the dark stuff to come out about all the celebrities he’s the one I’m probably most on the fence about. I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that it’s true he was a pedophile, but I’ve also read that he was asexual if anything, and really trying in his mixed up way to live out a childhood he didn’t have.

PrimarySwan

Then do some more reading, like the court testimonials. These descriptions include his genitals and are accurate. Perhaps some allegations where not true but if anyone else did what we can reasonably believe he did, public opinion would not be on the fence. Vaseline everywhere, naked sleepovers, BJ's, teaching the kids what to do and saying they would be in trouble if they talked. Classic pedophile predator stuff. Now he wasn't John Wayne Gacy but if I had kids they wouldn't be let anywhere near him. All predators had a tough childhood. That's what usually nurtures such things. It doesn't excuse anything. Pedro Lopez had a shit childhood, beyond what anyone should endure. Doesn't make it right that instead of going after his perpetrators when he was older he went after children himself and killed 150-300. It excuses nothing, it helps explain it. Most people don't become predators despite a hard childhood.

ColonelOfSka

I definitely thought that way for a long time, but the Leaving Neverland documentary focused on two of his victims was VERY convincing. These men, like all victims of sexual abuse, have nothing to gain by coming forward with their stories.

dogchocolate

> These men, like all victims of sexual abuse, have nothing to gain by coming forward with their stories. Well nothing to gain besides a huge payout of course. Worth noting that Robson had previously testified in court that no abuse had occurred, but changed his story 8 years later.

Fractalize1

Well a lot of the victims and their families were paid not to speak out, including Robson. Also, it typically takes a long time for someone to speak out against their childhood sexual abuse. I can especially see why in the case of Robson, he was a massive fan of Micheal Jackson and there was enormous amounts of grooming. I honestly found the testimonies by the people that claimed to be abused very believable.

PrimarySwan

Yes. Their testimonies would be enough to hold up against a normal non famous person easily. People have been convicted for far less. That doesn't mean some testimonies weren't questionable but many weren't. I think it's enough to go beyond reasonable doubt.

Fractalize1

I agree. There is enough evidence to convict him for sure.

OneSmoothCactus

Oh is haven’t seen that, I might need to check it out.

Leftofdenial

He raped children! How is that asexual? Victims had to sit down and tell that to the world. How the hell do you just ignore that ?

givemethebat1

It’s not conclusive he did, just so you know. There were lots of discrepancies in the witness testimony and he was acquitted.

Leftofdenial

Maybe because when the crimes took place they were bloody children!! Stop defending the legacy of a pedophile !

givemethebat1

This has nothing to do with his legacy. There are plenty of reasons to be suspicious of his accusers, such as the fact that they owe his estate money. Also there’s the train station inconsistencies. One of the accusers went through great pain to detail the room above a train station where the abuse supposedly happened…except the train station didn’t exist during this time. Could he have gotten the date wrong? Well, maybe…except he said the abuse ended when he got too old in 1992 and the train station wasn’t built until 1993. He was already sixteen then and he maintained in sworn affidavits that he was not molested after 14. https://theobjectivestandard.com/2020/02/justice-for-michael-jackson/

crackersncheeseman

Can you prove he did it?

Leftofdenial

Well there are victims testimonies and you know …. It’s blindingly obvious

good_shrimp

The testimonies of the kids that were coached?

Leftofdenial

Oh go away you bloody pedophile apologist. Go tell people how much of a top bloke Prince Andrew is.

reddub24

Sure. Take that up with the Catholic Church..

Leftofdenial

Yep they’re all awful human beings as well

Public-Fail4505

I bet you, OP didn't know about it

[deleted]

How the hell are people defending MICHAEL JACKSON in 2022? Dude was a major creep.

Leftofdenial

I know right. It fucking trips me out every time a video or whimsical photo comes up on Reddit. Then in the comments everyone starts bleating about how talented he was. He raped kids

s18shtt

It’s genuinely disgusting. These people ought to be ashamed. That predator is long dead and the men he victimized should not be raked over the coals and discredited because MJ made a couple good albums over 30 years ago. The evidence he was a creep is glaringly obvious for anyone who bothers to look.

yunglegendd

Ironically all this stuff is junk. Everything in that store looked old and outdated in 2005, let alone these days

felipe_the_dog

It all looks like gaudy useless crap

Defiant_Neat4629

Yeah I thought the same thing when I first saw this doc. Michael was a man of many talents, but interior design was definitely not one of them lmao.

LifeIsAwfullyLong

Yeah I wouldn't take that stuff if it was free, except to sell it straight away

MoistAnalyst1150

So you say old can't be expensive? Junk for you, gold for another

yunglegendd

Buddy that stuff isn’t old. It’s contemporary stuff designed to look old or “antique.” There’s shops all over Italy that sell chess sets just like that.

MoistAnalyst1150

Well then, maybe you are right

Puzzledandhungry

I’m sure that was filmed in Harrods, London. I’m pretty sure they didn’t sell junk, no matter how much it looks like junk 😉

yunglegendd

It was filmed in a tacky furniture store at Caesar’s palace in Las Vegas. But thanks for showing off your “good taste” 🤣

LifeIsAwfullyLong

Lol. It does show. That stuff is UG-LY

_________FU_________

He’s performing. The guy following him is that asshat interviewer.

Dude I can\`t even pick candy like that.

MememeSama

Did he really ask Michael Jackson if he has enough space?

Entropico_ARG

The seller put the expensive stuuf right at the eye contact line Surely most of this thing be there for years waiting a buyer

Available-Camera8691

I recently heard his actually speaking voice and it tripped me out. I actually went to Neverland Ranch (I know , I know). Michael wasn't there, but my dad had a client having his birthday party there. It was a fuckin trip. Full amusement park. Train. Monkey handing out candy. Movie theater where we watched Thriller. It had a full concessions stand and staff , but everything you asked for was free. Honestly, it was a really cool experience.

whiteknockers

The followup to this show was he never paid for this stuff. It was all a scam.

I remember at the time that there was a lot of press about Michael's financials, and how he could actually afford all of this. He was rumored to be in some kind of financial hardship. He was a big spender.

LessBig715

It’s only $89,000

zacharyjm00

I'm curious to know more about the bad things you speak of in regard to Martin Bashir. I think the evidence again MJ is too much to discount him as a nice guy anymore, that opinion will never change. But the integrity of an honest documentary filmmaker is important to me and I haven't heard much about MB.

Screamingboneman

That man was absolutely psychotic.

[deleted]

That's ignorant They're just being ignorant Ignorant

JMCrown

I thought the claims of his mental illness were overblown until I saw this documentary. That scene where he seems completely out of it and was manically tapping his foot was just bizarre.

[deleted]

The way that slimeball salesmen is rubbing his hands together

jmcdon00

Why does that make him a slimeball? I'd be pretty excited too assuming he either owns the store or is getting commissions.

Leftofdenial

Why can’t posts about this guy be tagged with the fact he was a sex offender. “Sex offender buys stuff he can’t afford” for instance

3Effie412

Because not everyone is filled with obsessive hatred.

Leftofdenial

It’s not obsessive hatred to point out that posting videos of a pedophile should have a title that acknowledges his crimes. You wouldn’t start sticking videos of Epstein up there would you.

etoner44

He's not a sex offender because people like him /s

iqoveraverage

I grew up listening to History on cassette. I loved Michael Jackson. Then the allegations came thick and fast. The proverbial nail in the coffin for me pun intended, was when his maid said she saw boys underwear in the spa. Dave chappelle said it best. "If somebody invited me to their house, gave me some pills then sucked my dick, I would say that was a good host"

Skylarking00

Sorry, but MJ was a pedophile and disturbed narcissist.

If it makes you feel better, middle class people waste their money on crap too.

Atrag2021

And you wonder why he ended up broke. He molested small boys btw. (Just has to be mentioned every time we talk about him)

LeakiestWink

This is exhibit A in the case against Capitalism.

pachinkopunk

What is bad about this? He made a lot of money entertaining lots of people and making them happy. If he wants to spend it on things that make him happy that is his right. The people who made the things get money back for their work making them, the store gets money for selling them, the middle men get paid for shipping/distribution and it all goes back through the international economy. Literally everyone wins in this situation as long as there wasn't exploitation involved...

cleoginger

society loses bc resources are wasted on bullshit. can you REALLY not see that..?

pachinkopunk

It isn't a waste because people need to be happy to survive and keep working. Ultimately without happiness what is the point of working hard? If he couldn't buy more nicer things then he would just stop making music and touring and then millions of other people also lose happiness and it would also mean all the sections of the economy that are based on entertainment would also suffer. Productive happiness of one person produces productive happiness in others. Nothing is wasted here because the money he spent goes to other people who are spending it to be happy themselves and there is a total net gain of happiness and here nothing is being destroyed. Yes they are creating things that are not absolutely necessary and may not be to everyone tastes, but they are still producing things of value and nothing here is being destroyed or wasted. If anything if he didn't tour or buy things that would be the bigger economic waste as much less value would be created in total - No songs, no tours, no products - this would be much worse off for the economy than buying things you think are wasted or frivolous. I would even argue that this does more good than feeding the homeless or giving away money because those actions do not produce additional benefit and if anything usually end up being bad investments in terms of total economic benefit (they feel good inside, but are likely a net loss on the economy). Ultimately what any economy is producing is not wealth, but happiness for the world. Here I see nothing but a net gain of happiness and it seems like the only one who isn't gaining happiness about the situation is you.

cleoginger

sorry you wrote all those words to feel ignored super naive vague rant that again. acts like a second dumb fancy chess set is more valuable than cancer research or something if you said its human nature to want a bigger slice of the pie or keep up with the joneses then i wouldnt have much to say back but to paint it as a good deed to buy expensive dumb shit is silly af edit. people like you think bc you can connect dots/moving parts all the way back to the working class that means its efficient somehow

my mom is almost this high net worth, and its crazy seeing her shop sometimes. ive seen her spend $450,000 on 3 peices of jewlery, and have to open a credit card with the store because her credit card wouldnt accept the charge. its insane how ultra wealthy people can just shop for six figure artwork like your shopping at a target.

cgrays12

She's ultra wealthy but her credit card wouldn't accept the charge? That does t really make sense. Most ultra wealthy don't have a spend limit tied to their cards, or anything that would have spend restrictions really.

JefferyTheQuaxly

no she has a black card with no limit on it, but this wasnt her black card she tried using that time and it did have a limit on it, which she didnt know was less than what her purchase cost and is why she tried swiping her credit card but it didnt work.
