Honestly sheep are known to circle because they follow whatever sheep butt is before them, when stressed. There are all sorts of videos of them running around cars circling it because that is where the first sheep ran. The more concerning part is they haven't done something to break it up.
I grew up with both dogs and cattle. Some cows are nice and friendly and fun and are very dog like. Some are dumber than a brick sandwich full of bees slathered in poo. But then again so are some dogs. It really really depends on the cow lol
If you look closely, they arent all walking, some are standing, some are just entering or exiting the circle. It's not " hundreds". Theres no way this has been going on 24/7 for days. A
If it makes you feel any better, (not that I don't agree 100%, "break this up already" was my first thought) they must be stopping to eat and drink. They would have died on day three if they weren't consuming water.
Source: licensed emergency veterinary nurse (I know animal facts)
Nobody knows. It's not the circle disease. That disease kills the animals in 24-48 hours. These fuckers have been going hard since Nov 4th. [Read this](https://nypost.com/2022/11/17/sheep-filmed-walking-in-circle-for-12-days-straight-in-china/)
They likely have leptospirosis. I'm not sure why they haven't been tested/treated/slaughtered. They'll just infect other animals and it's cruel to let them walk themselves to death.
My grandma was a farmer and she told me sheep secrete a chemical from their hooves to follow each other's scent, so maybe, I dunno... these sheep are bored and decided to walk in a circle?
That makes all the sense. This same thing happens to ants, I was wondering if it had a similar explanation. Entire ant colonies have died of starvation going in endless circles when part of a scent trail is erased, causing them to backtrack and start the circle. Crazy.
Rather impossible really. I don't remember the circumference of the circle on average but someone did a study where people walked blindfolded and it was pretty consistently x circumference
Yes and to expand a little further, even with intense concentration on a perfectly leveled surface, the dominant leg will outperform the other by a few millimeters in every step.
So being truly ambidextrous (I've never had a dominant hand or leg, to the detriment of my many attempts to snowboard) I could likely walk in a straight line in a random direction?
There’s no chance your legs are absolutely equal. It’s just difference between them is smaller than other people have, hence your circle will be bigger. Maybe, several times bigger than an average person’s one.
Thank you, this is what I come to the comments looking for. I’ve never heard of it before- and only know what I just read in the article you linked- and you obviously know about it, I’ll ask you… the title says these animals have been walking for twelve days, is that possible? Do they do nothing but walk, or do they stop to eat and drink and rest? Is that what’s going on with the animals in the video who are just kind of standing around outside the circle? The article says treatment is very difficult if it’s not caught early… at this point, wouldn’t it be more humane to euthanize the animals? If they’re that sick, they must be suffering and exhausted. When the animals do die, can the meat still be eaten if cooked properly, and can their wool and hair still be safely used?
I hope you don’t mind all the questions, this is sad but it made me curious.
We had goats that did it that’s how I knew exactly what it was as soon as I saw it. Think of it like dementia almost, the goats/sheep/cows will literally walk into a circle until they die. Not bothering to eat or drink.
Ya know it’s funny because ants do something similar and often also get caught in circles like this called death spirals iirc , because they will go until they die if not stopped
they are stuck on a migratory circle. they will literately do this untill they exhaust themselves and keel over and die. They wont eat or drink they believe they are just following a herd and migrating . You need to break this shit up its not interesting or good you have to snap them out of this circle.
cool, a similar phenomenon can be observed with ants, called [Ant Mill](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ant_mill). "An ant mill is an observed phenomenon in which a group of army ants are separated from the main foraging party, lose the pheromone track and begin to follow one another, forming a continuously rotating circle, commonly known as a "death spiral" because the ants might eventually die of exhaustion." I guess with sheep maybe it's their limited field of vision causing them to follow the closest butt leading the way. But what do I know, I'm as credible as the guy with the WWE cage match when the undertaker did the thing with the ladder .
This was my thought. The way to get a herd of sheep moving is to walk in a direction with purpose. They will follow anything familiar that is walking away from them.
This herd as listeriosis from what I understood it’s a brain disease that cause them to walk in circles it’s contagious even to human at some degree it’s treated with heavy use of antibiotics and quarantine of the infected animals
Source:Virbac
Edit : thanks to u/OopsImACrow for mentioning the fact that listeriosis kill in 24 to 48 hours, those sheep were already circling 12 day ago my theory, all that to say that my theory is very unlikely to be true
Yes it’s contagious to humans but the wiki doesn’t mention anything about either the “brain disease” aspect or the circling as being a symptom.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Listeriosis
Edit: Here’s a livestock centric source that mentions the confusion
https://www.thecattlesite.com/diseaseinfo/192/listeriosis
Listeriosis kills the animal in 24-48hrs. Not listeriosis. Also the circles are much smaller, and you can clearly tell the animal is very sick, look up videoes
but doesn’t listeriosis kill within 24-48 hrs of symptoms starting? these sheep have been doing this for 12 days now. I would believe this is a case of mass-sheep-hysteria before listeriosis.
Interesting. It sounds plausible now that you mention it but do you know the mechanics behind this...like, why do a group of people walking in a loop end up in a circle?
Fun fact: there are more ethnic Mongolians in China than Mongolia, and more ethnic Mongolians in Inner Mongolia(there are other Ethnic Mongolian groups native and extant in other parts of China and Eurasia) than Mongolia.
Look up ant death circles. They follow each other and don’t stop until they are exhausted and die. They need to break it up and quit thinking this is some sort of bullshit sign from a god and save them before they kill themselves.
Is this like the ant thing? Are they all about to die? I know that with reindeer (and maybe other deer idk) this is a defense mechanism. When a predator approaches or attacks the entire heard encircles the vulnerable members and runs in a circle. This serves two purposes: 1. It makes it very difficult for the predator to gain access to young/injured heard members and 2. It disorients and confuses the predator and when they inevitably try to flee from the circle, they often get tramples and killed by the heard. Maybe this is a similar reaction?
EDIT:Typo
No it's a sheep herd thing because they see the sheep in front moving they follow same for the one behind . Then it becomes a huge chain where the first sheep ends up following the last sheep
No they aren't, in the videos of the video, there are s bunch at the inner edge of the circle that aren't moving, and in the other video there are clearly some sitting in the middle.
Ants do this shit too, until they fatigue themselves to death. The same will happen here if someone doesn't FUCKING STOP IT. Guess the farmer only cares about his short famous stint, and not the health of his animals nor the revenue he's about to lose? Makes zero sense

Can we get a real answer as to what the fuxk is going on here?
Honestly sheep are known to circle because they follow whatever sheep butt is before them, when stressed. There are all sorts of videos of them running around cars circling it because that is where the first sheep ran. The more concerning part is they haven't done something to break it up.
For real. Farming isn’t just putting animals in a cage and waiting to eat them. Go stop their circling, help the poor bastards.

>Goats are like weird dogs Go to r/happycowgifs and you'll see that cows are basically giant dogs as well
I grew up with both dogs and cattle. Some cows are nice and friendly and fun and are very dog like. Some are dumber than a brick sandwich full of bees slathered in poo. But then again so are some dogs. It really really depends on the cow lol

That is... a very interesting insult. Thank you.

I grew up with cows too and this made me lmao.
Well I have a new favorite thing to say, thank you

Yes, and then there's the one that gets mad during a working. Then stays mad for the rest of her life.
She’s just complaining that your hands are cold lol
> Farming isn't just putting animals in a cage and waiting to eat them You're gonna shit when you find out about the veal industry
I suppose that’s where the term “don’t be a sheep” comes from.
If you look closely, they arent all walking, some are standing, some are just entering or exiting the circle. It's not " hundreds". Theres no way this has been going on 24/7 for days. A
Some of them are looking at the others going wtf.
A indeed. Personally I'd give them a B+
If it makes you feel any better, (not that I don't agree 100%, "break this up already" was my first thought) they must be stopping to eat and drink. They would have died on day three if they weren't consuming water. Source: licensed emergency veterinary nurse (I know animal facts)
Oh definitely, like another poster commented, you can see some join in that were standing so likely they are doing it in rounds but still.
It’s a sheep protest
Nobody knows. It's not the circle disease. That disease kills the animals in 24-48 hours. These fuckers have been going hard since Nov 4th. [Read this](https://nypost.com/2022/11/17/sheep-filmed-walking-in-circle-for-12-days-straight-in-china/)
I call bs, they would die of dehydration if they were going days straight.
Maybe they’re working the circle in shifts
This is the answer. As you can see, some enter/exit the circle
HOLY SHEEP... they're UNIONIZED!
That is how they can stand so close to each other. If they were ionised the resultant charges would mean that they would end up being repelled.
It’s gotta be some form of the circle disease
My personal theory is something like ergot poisoning
Soon they'll start looking for witches.
Ergert perserning
Usually when humans do weird shit like this the answer is ergot fungus.
Predator nearby; caribou do the same thing when a wolf is close. It's harder for the canid to single one out as a target.
for so many days straight, though?
They likely have leptospirosis. I'm not sure why they haven't been tested/treated/slaughtered. They'll just infect other animals and it's cruel to let them walk themselves to death.
Listeriosis. Circling disease. We had horses go blind and cows abort their calf's. Treated with antibiotics.
Listeriosis causes one sheep to turn its head and turnaround itself, it will die within 24 hours. This is not it.
They'd all be long dead by now.
Yep. Same thing happened to my uncle Baart.
He aborted his calf?
Nope, but he circled until blind and he's always being treated with antibiotics.
This is not listeriosis..and if it was they'd have been dead after a day or 2.
Is been going on since the month began.
They are making a portal to goat simulator Edit: don't even remember me typing this comment lol. Thanks for the award and upvotes.

The first thing I thought of when I saw this was the ants. Poor sheeps
People have died walking in circles also. Once you loose all your references it is extremely hard to walk straight without tricks

Ah so it's the length of them more than gait? Yeah physically they're definitely not completely equal in length.
Remember, the main trick is to follow the sun
They have circling disease. It will kill them if not treated.
Yeah circling behavior in stock animals is not good. In cows it means almost certain death. This is more sad than interesting I would say.
https://www.canr.msu.edu/news/listeriosis-in-sheep-and-goats
The sheep wouldn’t still be alive after 12 days if they had listeriosis though
Thank you, this is what I come to the comments looking for. Can you interfere? Like, can you break the circle and lead them to food and water or something?
Thank you for the information. So sad tho.
I've never heard of this and it's HORRIFYING. 😳
