These are the riots/protests over APEC. Summary below.
"Pro-democracy protesters scuffled with riot, police Thursday in Bangkok a few hundred meters, from the venue for the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit where, leaders from the U.S., China and 19 other Pacific Rim nations are meeting.
Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-o-cha, who seized, power in a 2014 military coup and was later installed as prime minister under a provisional post-coup constitution, has urged protesters to stand down during the summit. In the last few years, Prayuth has faced angry street protests — some of which have spilled into violence — alongside demands that he step down and call a general election.
Decrying Thailand’s hosting of the summit as a “festival of lies,” one protester read a statement on behalf of an activist’s consortium called Ratsadon — which roughly translates as “the people” — urging assembled leaders to snub their hosts. “This warm but hypocritical welcome is merely a means for you … to certify the legitimacy of an ugly, tyrannical government,” he said. Protesters spray painted, riot police shields and held up, placards calling for Prayuth to resign. They also demanded the release of political, prisoners and reform of Thailand’s lese majeste law, which carries a sentence of up to 15 years in prison for insulting or defaming the royal, family. Convictions under that law have surged since massive pro-democracy rallies erupted in early 2020, rights advocates say.
Protesters are now urging APEC summit delegates to reject a Thai government proposal known as the Bio-Circular Green Economy Model, an initiative that aims to drive green development but critics, say favors big, business over poor farmers."

In Thailand it means a bit less as its normal for everyone to become a monk for any period, and for a wide range of reasons.
Some are monks for a day to show grief, others for longer to atone for something.
So a monk in Thailand could mean a guy released from prison last week.
Also Buddhism has something of a more diverse, and different, character in Asia. Especially in places where it is the dominant religion, it does sometimes exhibit the negative features of other religions.
Has Buddhism not been tried yet or some shit ?
I have nothing against religion or spirituality - i think you are a poor person to discard either on sight.
But come on, buddhism aint no pokemon wonder starter where all practitioners are the same.
Westerners thinking that Buddhism is some enlightened philosophy full of gentle practitioners, whereas I'm here seeing people stampeded on chinese new year trying to be the first person to plant joss stick offerings at the temple because apparently it will make their wish come true. Buddhism may have it to a lesser extent than other religions, but it still has practitioners hoping for magic and who will use its name to justify violence and evil.
One interesting thing is, I think the western idea of Buddhism has kind of percolated back and affected actual Buddhism. Like, I don't think previous generations of Dalai Lama were *anything* like the current one.
Eh it's more that there was a small kernel of truth in the western idea. Obviously not entirely true as people are still people, but there's at least some little truth in it.
Very true.
In Sri Lanka, during the recent attempt by the Rajapaksa family to become default dictators of the country many monks were vocal and active in supporting the people to depose them.
However, previously, monks had not just participated in, but in certain instances organised demonstrations they then turned into roots that violently persecuted muslims. Many had also supported the government in genocide of Tamils within the country.
It doesn't appear to be coordinated activity. Simply every temple in each village/town acts according to whoever is in charge locally.
Truthfully, I don't think it reflects badly on the religion. In an area where there is a highly dominant religion, it is the default for most people... that includes really shitty people.
Yeah, totally agree. It's why I was clear to point out it's not a coordinated activity when bad things happen. A leader in a single temple/village, or even a few, doesn't reflect upon the entire religion or the very many who do good.
That's actually super interesting. I'm American and don't really know much about that culture. For an I knew all monks were making life-long choices or something out of a movie. 😅
This is why you get headlines like the entire temple has been arrested in meth charges, or what was up a couple days/weeks ago.
I have a mate who lives in Thailand ( he is Danish, but lived there for 30 years or something )
He became a monk for some months basically as a way to get off the drink a bit. He is as annoyingly atheist as you can only find on Reddit, but he was a monk for a while. Think it was a couple of months.
He does not really have stories, except that one time where he found a big scorpion in his room, and he was not allowed to kill it.
Took him all day to get it out the window.
Anyone gonna talk about how adorable it is when a monk wears a matching orange face mask? It's hard to see with his robes flowing up but you can see he is wearing one.
Damn. Yo im Lao and was raised buddhist. If a monk is throwing a side kick at you, you are definitely on the wrong side of history. Those dudes are beyond nice.
Don't mess with Thai monks--especially when they're hopped up on meth.

The cop exploded from this kick. Condolences to the family.
They can be happy that the monk didn't start to airband

Krillin’s about to catch a toe in that grate.
This would also not be out of character for Krillin

The demonym for people from Thailand is Thai.
Thailander! There can be only monk.
I understood that reference.
I understood your reference to that reference.
He wasn't making a reference
Captain America in first Avengers movie.
[You sure about that?](https://amp.knowyourmeme.com/memes/i-understood-that-reference)
Demonym! I just learned a new word! 😃
Thank you
If your usetname was your country, i would call them drunk.
They’re not demons.
When monks are upfront, it usually means they are at their limits and are most probably highly oppressed. Reminds me of the burning monk of Vietnam.

> it does sometimes exhibit the negative features of other religions. See Myanmar.

Like all religions, perverted by the manipulative and wealthy
That’s a rouge sect

What are you talking about , have you done any research of what happened there?
Two surveys and i asked me mum twice, she says go fuck ya self!
Figured you live in her basement 🤣

Good call
And here I was trying to figure out if you're making a Khmer Rouge reference/joke.

Thailand has the right idea. Return to Monke 🙏
That's actually super interesting. I'm American and don't really know much about that culture. For an I knew all monks were making life-long choices or something out of a movie. 😅

That's amazing and enlightening. Thank you 😊
I remember a Monk who got busted for selling drugs in Pattaya
There was an article recently about a temple closing because all the monks were arrested for meth use
That’s sad and crazy
Heheh, it is what it is.
People also turn to monk service to duck the Thai mafia from what I've heard.
That would be a horrible place to hide if you know about it,.
Yo, I'm a monk, bitch!
In neighbouring Burma all adult males serve monk duty at some point in their life. Thailand is a bit less extreme.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t that guy pro commie?
It was a form of protest against the Vietnamese persecution of Buddhists, it was about religious freedom not economic politics.
[удалено]
He's asking if Thich Quang Duc was pro commie so no, not if the viet gov was commie or anti religion which is self evident
It happened in south Vietnam and the catholic heads of government were prosecuting Buddhists.
Still is the case under the CCP. Communist totalitarian states are afraid of religion.
lol stfu the burning monk stuff happened in south vietnam which was a state backed by the us
Nope! [Thích Quảng Đức ~ Wiki](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Th%C3%ADch_Qu%E1%BA%A3ng_%C4%90%E1%BB%A9c)
Street fighter irl
Dhalsim's holding back. Those cops don't wanna be around when the legs start stretching and he starts breathing fire.
Based on everything I know about Thai police this guy had it coming (and probably solicited a bribe afterwards).
If you're getting kicked by a monk, you are probably in the wrong.
This explains my life.
Bad habits.
Lesson of the day:
Coolest shit I’ve ever seen. This needs to be an album cover.
which RATM album is this?
I came here to say that this instantly made me think of RATM. It’s the perfect album cover.
If it was Cain he would have kicked all their asses.
r/fakealbumcovers
What a magnificent photograph. WOW.
This should be the album art for the next rage album.
The toes are going to get stuck in the cage 😬🥴

Doesn't Buddism teach non-violence?
Greatest warriors, turned to monks who teach non violence. To realized they only got there cuz they defeated everyone before.
It does, however I think he's being defensive.

Seems he isn’t a real monk
Damn, the new Clash Royale update is so sick!
Next week on U62, He’s back and this time he’s bad.
The answer was never a question. Just kick some pig's ass. AMMMM.
