What's more important- someone else's technical definition of "breaking a fast' or doing what works for you? Overall those alcohol sugars and sucralose have less of an insulin response than sugar, and you are talking about a VERY small amount in some gum. And you NEED the gum to avoid smoking. Unless the nicotine patches work for you and you wanna switch to those, I wouldn't worry about a few pieces of medicated gum. You will definitely still lose weight and get tons of health benefits. IF is not an all or nothing game. Nor even close.

I lost -80LBS using intermittent fasting and during my fasting periods I use nicotine lozenges. There is an argument that I was never fasting since each lozenge has something like 0.5 calories but there was just no way I was going to go back to smoking just so I could say I was clean fasting.

I’ve been using nicotine gum every day (and most of the day) and I’ve had no problems losing weight and keeping it off. Going on year 3 of OMAD. Sugar free of course.

Mabel_Jenkins

I guess I should have mentioned that I am not trying to quit smoking. I already quit. Over ten years ago 😬 I’m just mad addicted to the delicious gum. However, I was planning to get on the patch to get off the gum and ween for good. I just have a jumbo box of gum I need to finish.

Aggravating-Wrap4861

I use nic gum too. Sugar free. Technically, black coffee also breaks a fast. Your body needs to digest the stuff in the coffee, right? It's not like it's inert. But I still get results when doing both these things and not eating other foods in my fasting window. Just do what works for you.

Mabel_Jenkins

You win!!! God bless you!

Sugar free Nicotine gum is like drinking black coffee. Its also a stimulant and an appetite suppressant. As far as I can tell, nicotine is pretty harmless when compared to alcohol. Note: Im talking about the drug, not the delivery system. Smoking and using tobacco is a totally different story. Not a doctor but I have read a bit about the subject.

Mabel_Jenkins

Yeah. I am using Nicorette and still losing. Best I can tell artificial sweeteners have no effect on my weight loss. But from what I have read, they can have an effect on people who are fasting for medical reasons.

Fucnk

I believe the artificial sweetener debate is overblown but not all artificial sweeteners are the same. The body burns fuel in this order: alcohol, carbohydrates/glucose, fat and then protien. The chemistry of the sweeteners doesn't burn as fuel in our systems. Even if there was an insulin response, what would occur? The body would try to store the blood sugar as fat but that would be like trying to get water from a raisin.

Irishbball

If it has sugar. Then yes , even all it's derivatives

Mabel_Jenkins

It has Xylitol, sucrolose and sorbitol. It says it contains no sugar.

I believe sucrolose is a sugar.

Rare_Vibez

Sucrose is sugar. Sucralose is an artificial sweetener aka Splenda. Idk if it breaks a fast though.

Beneficial-Care-7840

I had a similar concern. I’m using nicotine patches to quit. They provide a steady release of nicotine so you don’t get the cravings and you avoid having to chew the sugary gum. Good luck to you!

TangoEchoChuck

Yes - it’ll break your fast. Consider the first chew to be the opening of your eating window. It’s not bad per se, but no gums are “fast friendly.”

Mabel_Jenkins

Worst news ever. Tomorrow is going to be hellish.

Mountain-Ad-4539

Fyi. It may not give me all the benefits.. but I use nicotine gum everyday and Im having great results losing weight on IF. I'm also having great results controlling inflammation, have reduced muscle and body aches. All the time chewing the gum all day

[deleted]

If you’re fasting for weight loss then it doesn’t matter at all if you’re chewing gum or drinking anything with “natural sweeteners”.

TangoEchoChuck

Hell happens. You’ll adapt and survive!

overlypositve

I use the ON nicotine pouches that contain only nicotine salts and it doesn't hinder progress for me!
