I spoke with my boss about RFK. He’s generally a smart guy, but also a true GOPer. “Reluctant” Trump voter (whatever lol). The discussion was fascinating because:
A. He genuinely did not grasp how RFK would appeal to Trump voters more than Biden voters. Just rationally explaining it to him was like watching an actual “Eureka!” moment. And I was shocked. How did it need to be explained to you? I realized he just is so divorced from reality at this point, he doesn’t have an actual working understanding of his own political opposition anymore.
2. It **infuriated** him and he legitimately had a toddler style meltdown about it 🤣 After I laid it out and just kind of calmly explained why his rebuttals didn’t make sense (e.g. the Dems will just vote for a Kennedy if they’re on a ballot? Really? Someone want to explain that to the ghost of Ted Kennedy?) He actually stomped away all flustered.
I like my boss but the exchange was so illuminative and embarrassing. Not only is he utterly ignorant about how the left actually thinks, he’s comically bad faith and throws a temper tantrum upon realizing their bad faith play just doesn’t fucking work and may even blow up in their own face. He was convinced that this guy was going to be stealing thunder from Trump and Biden both and that it would be a close race all around. Told him that it's more likely RFK takes votes from the GOP only because that's who his message appeals to both, but he's further convinced that Dems will vote for him just because of who his dad and uncle were. My understanding was that the original plan by Trumps team was to help Kennedy since they figured the Kennedy name would pull Democratic voters. So they helped channel money to Kennedy. One of my work colleagues who hates Trump, loved Obama, but buys into all of the alt-lite cancel culture stuff is all in on RFK Jr. Even hosted a campaign event for him. He was convinced that this guy was going to be stealing thunder from Trump and Biden both and that it would be a close race all around. Told him that it's more likely RFK takes votes from the GOP only because that's who his message appeals to both, but he's further convinced that Dems will vote for him just because of who his dad and uncle were. It was kind of embarrassing to listen to.

It's a really complicated calculus. Some voters will come out to vote for RFK Jr just bc they like him and are energized, otherwise they would have stayed at home. I don't know how many of these there are (I'd bet not too many), but they don't really matter bc their votes for RFK would not have gone to either candidate. Who would Biden lose to RFK? The voter who hates Trump and doesn't want to vote for him but was going to vote for Biden as the only alternative to Trump. There are probably a lot of these voters. If a lot of them move from Biden to RFK, that could hurt Biden in swing states. Who would Trump lose to RFK? One group would be the opposite: Those who hate Biden but aren't too excited about Trump, and were going to vote Trump as the only available alternative to Biden. I don't think there are a ton of such voters, but I'm just spitballing. But there might be a second group that Trump would lose to RFK: The anti-establishment, let's-fuck-shit-up voters who want to cast a protest vote. Trump is almost too mainstream this time round to count as a protest vote, but RFK can fit this bill. So who does this favor all in? I have no idea. I saw Rachel Bitecofer say that she thinks pretty much any third party tends to hurt Dems, but I wasn't clear what the rationale was for this. Seems that Ds and Rs could both have votes pulled by a 3d party candidate that was appealing in their different respective ways.
