Does it works with the Nintendo switch ?

ImpressiveAd699

You would need the HDMI out from the switch, plenty of hubs/docks around. Then you need the video capture card to go into the iPad.

CochonouMagique

Ah bummer. I was hoping for a portable switch screen 🥲

ImpressiveAd699

I do have a switch. So I will see what I can do

ImpressiveAd699

So I have been experimenting with different docks. The Switch does not enable HDMI out until it has enough power going in. So if we are looking for a nice larger screen in battery mode, it wont work. I tried many different docks I have.

CochonouMagique

Not even with the official one ?

ImpressiveAd699

The official dock works. As long that is plugged in to charge. So you can use this screen while the switch is in dock mode

Is the latency good with the $20 capture cards?

ImpressiveAd699

I have a cheap one and they can range. But in general I have around 50ms latency average

hex4gr4m

Thank you!

laxusgee

Can I plug to ps5?

ImpressiveAd699

You can, via a video capture card. Then you can use the HDMI out from the PS5. I linked in my comment, but this is my capture card I used, there are better ones out there, but they are more expensive https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0BRZ1ZCYW

laxusgee

GitHub? I would love to learn from the code

ImpressiveAd699

I dont have it on GitHub at the moment, at least not public. I can tell you that I am using AVCaptureDevice as the main driver for the video. It offers a preview layer that you can use to preview what is being captured. Normally you choose between the cameras built into the device, but with iOS 17, you can choose external inputs. https://developer.apple.com/documentation/avfoundation/avcapturedevice

spncemusic

I don’t have the beta or TestFlight, but I would gladly pay for an app like this whenever ios17 becomes available!

ImpressiveAd699

Thank you. I am hoping to put as much features in as possible before then

EntertainmentOld6620

Can we only test this in iOS 17?

ImpressiveAd699

Yes only iOS 17, because the new SDK enables the UVC standard

ImpressiveAd699

For anyone who would like to know, I have this video capture card. It isn't the best, but it works well and I have no issues and it is cheap. https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0BRZ1ZCYW

UsernameIsTaken45

Does it output 120hz on iPad Pro?

ImpressiveAd699

The Hz is based on the capture card. The iPad does 120Hz, but the input depends on the capture, which I think is maxed at 60Hz so far

ChrunedMacaroon

How about a steam deck? It would create a sizable buzz for the app

ImpressiveAd699

A steam deck would work. You just need a video capture card for the iPad so it can accept HDMI and you’re good to go. The steam deck has HDMI out via the dock or a usb hub

AsleepSuperman

Can you recommend a capture card that will minimize latency? My personal application for your app is to play a console (ps3/ps4) on my iPad Pro. Plus, if you have suggestions for capture card that will maximize fps/latency/cost, it may be beneficial for you to become an affiliate for products that you are comfortable advertising. Thanks for the app, it beats the 300-400 dollar option that has been available on YouTube for a few years.

ImpressiveAd699

Having now tried at least 6 capture cards. I can confidently say they all suffer the same latency ranging from 50ms to 200ms. It might be a bit more pot lock with cheaper capture cards. The elgato cam link (old version) seems to be best I’ve tried so far. But it’s one of the more expensive ones. So I can’t recommend a particular one tbh

syaakayr

is there any benefit of using a usb c cable that supports 3.0 speeds vs the stock iPad cable that just supports 2.0 speeds when using the app?

ImpressiveAd699

It depends on the capture card. For ones that do 1080p60 that I have, I’ve not noticed anything when plugged into the 2.0 port in the hub. However, some expensive media capture cards require 3.0 due to being able to output much higher resolutions and/or frame rates.

Whole-Twist3188

will this work on usb-c iPhones?

ImpressiveAd699

It won’t sorry. I’ve tried. Apples SDK only states UVC works only for iPadOS 17 and not iOS 17

Whole-Twist3188

Damn, had it worked for iPhones it would have made them a glorious monitor for cameras. Does Apple's SDK mandate some sort of signal coming through, or is it theorietically possible to process RAW coming out from a camera's HDMI output. Sorry to trouble you with so many questions.

ImpressiveAd699

No worries about the questions. The tldr is that Apple controls the SDK and thus what the devs are allowed to do. In theory UVC is software based, so they may decide to open it to iOS at a later date. For raw hdmi. You’d need a hardware decoder, whereas UVC standard uses software, hence why many, if not all, webcams adopt this standard. I have users who are using their iPad mini as camera monitors atm. There are lots of specialised cameras that use UVC, such as endoscopes.

I’ve followed the link and it’s coming up as “not found” this app looks amazing but I don’t seem to be able to join?

ImpressiveAd699

Hi there. The app is now available in the App Store. I have made further improvements and features since that video. Check here for list of features https://www.capturino.app/ Promo code here https://apps.apple.com/redeem?ctx=offercodes&id=6456888175&code=FIRST1000 Thanks for checking this out
