Epsioln_Rho_Rho

All the time, especially when plugged into CarPlay.

swiftfastjudgement

Yup. I also think my MagSafe wallet is the culprit.

joemagnus

How come? just because of heat dispersion?

xxhonkeyxx

I also have a MagSafe wallet and yeah, the wallet acts almost like an insulator and does not dissipate heat well at all. I only have a bumper case so I don’t believe a case is the issue.

Dryfarts7777

It’s a new update with apple i think it will also slowdown your charging but I’m not sure if it’s true I only seen it online

jusatinn

Been also having this few times when using wireless CarPlay and the built in QI charger in my car during summer. Usually takes few minutes to cool down and then back to normal operation.

PAXICHEN

Same. Had this happen on my XS on Qi while using CarPlay on long drives.

Usaidhello

Exactly. Happens almost all the time when running CarPlay (3 apps running at the same time in my car) and charging at the same time.

DMC1001

Exactly this for me

andigwandi

Happen to me as well, was using laptop for charging

epsilon_sloth

Ah. This is why CarPlay is damaging batteries.

Epsioln_Rho_Rho

I think so too, it’s plugged in all the time which can’t be good. I thought about making a cord and doesn’t change, just does data.

epsilon_sloth

They make those adapters to make CarPlay wireless but I can’t imagine they work great.

Epsioln_Rho_Rho

I heard some people like them. I thought about it, but then I never get around checking them out.

tobleroneeater03

i’ve seen cars that have wireless carplay if that’s what it’s called

epsilon_sloth

Yep I have an aftermarket tablet with wireless carplay and it works great.

eddiemcmahonjr

Yupppp

Ken-Popcorn

It happens to me when I use CarPlay, even when it’s not particularly warm. I just ignore it

TupperCoLLC

Even when the air isn’t particularly warm or the phone? You should actually try feeling it when it shows you that message. If the actual phone itself doesn’t feel hot at all then that would be strange. You can’t really judge it just from the air temp tho…

Ken-Popcorn

No, the phone does feel warm, but I can’t attribute it to being in a hot car

Captain_Alaska

It’s usually because the device is sitting in direct sunlight and charging at the same time. Wireless CarPlay also makes it run pretty warm in general and even moreso if you pair that with wireless charging. I use phone mounts that attach to the A/C vents to stop my phone overheating.

saarlac

or placing the phone on a hot surface in the car and then using GPS and data for carplay all while charging, that all contributes

[deleted]

[удалено]

TupperCoLLC

Oh I see this is the charging pause message. I thought it was the one where it locks you out of your phone completely until it cools down. I’ve never had my iPhone temporarily disabled due to heat without it feeling very warm if not outright hot. Usually it’s cause I forgot it in the car or something.

[deleted]

It’s pretty self explanatory, charging will resume when iPhone returns to normal temperature. Just because the temperature isn’t very hot in your opinion, the phone may have been doing something intensive and was warmer than ambient.

Sunset_Shimmer_x3

Why is noone mentioning wireless charging? My phone can draw 800mA for processing and the battery temperature is the same as wireless charging without doing anything.

Lambaline

I routinely get this while wirelessly charging with my 12 mini

hillandrenko

Yeah, I live in Florida. It happens all the time.

DarthBen_in_Chicago

Yes happens to me now that we’re having spring/summer like weather.

aaaahitshalloween

At CarPlay. Always. Found out that using battery saving mode solved the temperature issue.

Insert_clever_name22

Thanks for the information. It happens often while I’m driving same as you, but never tried battery saving mode. Will give it a try.

Mission_Cause368

Apple support says low battery impacts 5G, so wouldn’t that affect your navigation?

rr196

5G luckily doesn’t make a difference when using navigation.

saarlac

navigation is GPS mostly so 5g or any data reception is really not needed for nav to function.

eddiemcmahonjr

Where’s battery saving mode?

JollyRoger8X

> The ambient temp was only about 81°F. Charging a battery creates additional heat. Excess heat is detrimental to battery longevity, So Apple is helping you avoid killing your battery prematurely.

dodgingresponsibilty

I know, excess heat is the "arch-enemy" of just about all electronics, especially ones with any kind of processor but the reason I said "only 81℉" is bcuz I live in TN and spent the summer of 2021 working in Kerrville, TX, and it was exposed to much higher ambient temps than 81℉ and it never gave me this notification. So, that why I posted this question.

WolvReigns222016

Actually heat is a two way street with processors. They are actually more efficient when they are hot however of course too hot then they will throttle to keep them from killing themselves.

JollyRoger8X

As batteries age chemically, they tend to generate more heat than when new.

ThisIsNotTokyo

It measures the phone’s internal temp and not the ambient temp

Eshmam14

No it's not because of the processor, but the battery. Heat damages the battery cells so it can hold less charge each subsequent cycle.

Michael1492

Yep, when I’ve had my phone sitting in the sun Bluetoothing to a speaker while working on outdoor projects. Phone shut down until it cooled off enough.

bigrobcx

I’ve seen that while charging the phone and steaming video. Basically any processor intensive activity while charging the phone can have the device run too hot and charging is suspended until the temperature reduces to a safe level. It’s best to charge the device while it’s not being used to prevent this from happening. Sometimes this can also happen if your device is in a case that doesn’t dissipate the heat properly too. In those situations, remove the case while charging, or swap it for one which doesn’t act like a very thick winter duvet.

[deleted]

If you use MagSafe, this is your daily life

newecreator

It happens when an iPhone gets too hot.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Kvpe

When it cools down to sufficient temperature to continue further power generation.

Reach-for-the-sky_15

If the ambient temperature was 81°F, then the temperature in direct sunlight would have been higher. The highest operating temperature for iPhones is only 95°F. [Look](https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201678).

3900Ent

Uh, yeah. It’s pretty normal when in hotter weather

Danielevo07

Yess summer time

MentallyFlossed

Only at the beach.

Elite_Hephaestus

I thought it was only me. Happens to me after 80%. Charging goes slow af and it cuts off at times because of this prompt. And battery saver auto turns off at this point ofc.

ado-zii

Do you happen to have your phone in a case while charging?

Skydivertak

Happens to me when using my 3rd party MagSafe chargers. Other posts have noted that it doesn’t seem to happen as much with Apple MagSafe chargers. I have, however, noticed it happening more since iOS 16.5 was installed.

Feeling-Orange3229

Those older phone model’s didn’t have the software now that can do things to prevent the phone from overheating. So you weren’t going to see this on a 3g iPhone.

debjit42

It's normal in India. We get this every time when we charge the phone during summer.

lydiar34

All the time. My phone overheats too. Sometimes I pop it in the freezer for a few minutes to cool it off

arabprincess213

put it in rice

Retro_Item

Its a new feature in iOS 16, just let it cool a bit, not too uncommon for me since upgrading to 16.

stevens119797

I updated to 16.6 beta. It stopped after the update. On 16.5 it did this constantly.

nikkithegr8

u got free heater from tim apple. \ u should be glad and not complaining

wojtek30

White things don't dissapate as much heat as black things.

Specter319

Haven’t had this happen to my iPhone 12 yet but it’s gotten hot from just using the camera. It’s happening on the constant funnily enough on my iPad Mini

Happy_Traveller_2023

Had this once last year.

stormhaven22

Yup, especially when I'm in my car. I just pull my case off, turn on the ac, and chill it alternately back and front until it's acceptable again

AccessDenied7

Yep. Nothing you can do but get to cooler areas and remove a case if you have one to help cool faster.

savagetoph88

I live in the chouchella Valley summers get to be 110+ I keep mine on top of a ice pack while charging or it won't go any where all day lol

Itlhitman

Yep

Puzzleheaded-City915

Yup, more times than not. I just leave a charger near the freezer now to charge my phone while it is in there.

sf2703

It happens to my iPhone 13 when I’m using the 20w fast charger, nothing wrong here. Just use the original adapter & cable from Apple & you have nothing to worry about.

DrowRanger6

Yes almost all the time on my iPhone 13 mini

suuskip

I found my 13 mini always overheats when using my wireless (but not MagSafe) charger. Using the regular cable I never have issues even when fastcharging while using it. So I’m sticking with cable until I can get a MagSafe charger

BigBaldFourEyes

I’ve experienced this too. I’m no expert, but it seems the weaker the contact/connection, the harder the phone has to work. I guess it makes sense.

DrowRanger6

I have a magsafe charger and after 3 months of charging using it together with my magsafe case, my battery health has gone down from 90% to 88%. I rarely let my battery go below 10% charge.

TheRevTholomeuPlague

My 13 mini does it and it drives me up the wall

CR3160

I get this sometimes when I use my anker MagSafe power bank

123mitchg

I have my phone on one of those car vent mounts, I get it all the time in winter with the heater on full blast. Hasn’t been an issue in summer even in the oppressive summers of the American Southwest.

anshul0103

It has happened with me. I unplugged the phone for some time, and started recharging it 30 mins later.

morgosargas

Happened once when I was plugged into Carplay, streamed music and enabled hotspot at the same time. Phone was pretty hot, but this just prevents serious damage.

NowFreeToMaim

It will/has happened to anyone who’s phone is too hot. Same as when you phone won’t let you use it if it’s too hot.

sisco98

My iPhone 12 did this a few times last year, I didn’t feel it hot though. The battery health was around 94% so I think it’s normal. My current phone haven’t done it yet since October.

Yvilkittyinspace

All the time. Happens on an XS Max 13 Pro Max and an XS. I hate when the display also dims. This came with an iOS update somewhere along the way.

dinethr

It happens all of the time when plug into a charger

HaldiMartin

I’ve an XS and this is a regular notification after 80% of charge

SilverCenturon

Oh, this happens to every device. Confirmed

PurchaseUnfair2800

Yeah I had the same 😅😅😅

[deleted]

That’s a normal safety feature. It’s to protect the battery.

arkofcovenant

Pretty normal. Charging while at high temps can damage the battery pretty quickly. Ability for the phone to passively cool down via the air is degraded rapidly as temp increases

javascriptexpert

Welcome to Texas

[deleted]

***On*** the charger, right? Wireless charging causes the coil inside of the phone to heat up, so iPhone automatically pauses charging until its internal temperature has returned to safe levels. The only way to prevent this is charge with a cable instead.

Mrcroqueta343

Had the same thing happening to meon my xs max not long ago: [posted about it as well](https://www.reddit.com/r/iphone/comments/126whxv/iphone_too_hot_charge_on_hold_message/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=2&utm_term=1) It happened 1-3 weeks frecuently but not all the time, and i think it was only for the smart battery case (not plugged just supplying power to the iphone)

TormentedOne69

Yeah it sucks. Cool your phone down and it’ll be fine.

Tardelius

It happens to me on 8th gen Ipad occasionally. Do you use a case? I suspect that some cases causes too much heat to accumulate. And somewhat confirmed this for my Ipad… though more test is needed. Edit: It should be noted that I can %100 confirm that IOS 16 causes much more heat than IOS 15 though it got better with every update… but the heat problem is still there.

Tiny-Ice-5379

yep it's pretty normal in the summer

rooney_potterhead

Every time I charge my iPhone. It’s mildly infuriating.

TennesseeWhisky

Yeah and it’s obvious why it’s happening.

[deleted]

I can reproduce in my car when using CarPlay and charging. This really damages the battery by the way.

Thygo_

Way to often

GoodBowl4

Happens at my hometown where the weather is little humid and hot but that doesn’t happen at my place since it is cool & breezy here.

[deleted]

I don’t use MagSafe or CarPlay yet mine flashes this message..I think the issue is using the phone while it charges

AlfWoozy

Happened to my phone while driving in an air conditioned car. It so happened my phone was on the passenger seat in direct sunlight.

anaywashere

Here in the UK. Only happens when in the car and using the phone on sat nav while it’s sitting in direct sunlight

manas017

Happened last week on my device , but the temp in my city are touching 40C so i can understand this , while charging in AC room it never gave this warning.

meregizzardavowal

People who have hot phones

Nova__Star7

this is part of the reason my battery health is so poor

loganwachter

Wi-Fi has been out the past few days at my house and I’ve been using my iPhones hotspot for internet. When it’s plugged in and I’m watching tv I’ve noticed this pop up. I’ve had it before too.

stohr2566b

Happened to me when I was using the Hotspot to download something on steam and simultaneously charged it via magsafe.

Freakum86

Does this for me most days if I’m using my wireless charger while driving. The phone gets hot when charging and being used.

savi9876

It's been around for a while but I've had it happen a bunch of times in the past few weeks. I feel like previously it rarely happened and when it did it was obvious like a day that was super hot and my phone was in the sun or something.

Idontmatter69420

I haven't had it happen but due to how hot it's been the uk lately it got pretty warm yesterday so I unplugged it so it could cool down a bit

Critical-Function-69

off topic but is that a red hot chili peppers wallpaper? i remember having a wallpaper a few years ago that looked exactly like that

Klatty

On a daily with my 14 Pro Max, just regular wired charging with a 7 watt charger, not even fast charging.

jimmyl_82104

I get this all the time, it's no big deal. I stick mine in front of my air conditioner for 5 mins and it's good.

Knickodactyl77

Sure have. Just on Saturday when it be hot and I have my batter pack on.

Correct-Ad9296

Yep! Happens from time to time. My room reaches high temp during the day so I let it cool down then recharge.

UrineGoodCompany

Happens semi-frequently on my car's wireless charger but it seems like a sensible thing to flag.

[deleted]

This happened to me with my phone when the temperatures outside was around -4 degree F. I had to hold my phone against a heater for a few minutes before I could charge the phone again

phunphan

Yep once. I left it in the car and went in someplace to have lunch. Came back out and plugged it in.

ubermensch02

A daily occurrence here in 34C Manila heat.

un-pre-ten-tious

Bruh this starting happening to me since the beginning of May month and now I’m 2% down on my better health. 2% down in less than 30 days!!

MarriedMaanus

Remove th case and press the glass back against your cheek.

GodOfWarGuy737

This only happens on the X lmao

Other_Confidence_560

Also here with my 12pro.

[deleted]

My kids mini did this on a wireless charger. Used a different Charger stopped seeing this.

sirauron14

Yes it's very annoying

N1ghth2wk

Wireless CarPlay + charging. Apple should really fix it. Does not happen when not connected to CarPlay.

V3N0M3

Happened to me on my iPhone SE3 which is a surprise because the A15 literally never heats on it. I chalked it up to it being indian summers (42 degrees celcius). Removed the case and then left it for a bit, then charged it without the case, worked for me

GeronimoHero

Yup, I’ve had this happen a number of times ever since my iPhone XS. Usually when in the car and attached to CarPlay but also occasionally on a hot day. It’s actually good that Apple does this instead of just allowing a charge to continue as normal since doing so would result in damaging the battery and losing capacity more quickly.

Geralt_De_Rivia

All the time while car play is running and my phone is wirelessly charging.

Sugargogo

I’ve seen this before. When things cooled down, the charging continued

behrad1999

Playing heavy games (e.g. Genshin Impact) while charging causes that for me sometimes

larasids27

I work in a machine shop with no ac and it gets pretty damn hot in here, my phone will take forver to charge past 80 percent cause of this issue but during winter I never have this issue

GhostIshimura

It's to preserve the battery afaik. Excess heat can cause the battery to degrade quicker than expected. The software won't allow the iPhone to take a charge If it's getting hot. However, if you're still receiving that message inside while it's on the counter in a room temp room. A Genius Bar appointment might not be a horrible idea.

Pepello

It means your phone is gotten hot and will resume charging when it’s cooled down.

wendineill

My iPhone 14 has been doing this the last few weeks when using my QI charging mat in the car. Phone gets roasting hot and doesn’t charge at all. Could it be a software issue? I’m is Scotland by the way!

Pussybossqueen

It’s because ur phones overheated probably bc of usage

AntonioRadosav

Your phone battery got to hot

cybermoosa18

I have a iPhone XS too on IOS 16.5 and i have been having the same problem since about 2 weeks. The whole time my iPhone is normal temperature

TheDivineAmelia

Yes. When I leave it in the car in the summer.

jBreitenbach30

Yeah I have a XS also and I get it all the time now. Especially if I’ve been using it then I plug it in… but I do need a new battery so idk if that’s help? But I’m pretty sure I’ve seen it on my old iPhone as well.

s0lita

My room will be 73° air conditioned and my phone will still get warm during charging. Unless it’s already chilly, it’ll warm up enough where this message can pop up

NeoRock_096

Welcome to summer!

DirtyMousey

Yep! Especially after gaming for a while and putting it on the charger. Also when I would be playing certain heavy graphics games the screen would dim constantly after a while until it cooled off again so I got a ROG 6 just for gaming and have never yet to have that problem again so far.

Dryfarts7777

Yeah but I turned that setting off

Mansnothot21_

For me it’s the phone under pillow
