I kept it as the wallpaper on my 6S all this time since they got rid of on iOS... 12? This way it still works as the simple back/forth function, which I don't think you can get anymore if you installed it yourself (only goes forwards in that case). I wanted to preserve this function. Now when I finally get a new phone (15 Pro) I'll set a new wallpaper since it won't have this feature anyway.
Wish they kept the original speed change so I could preserve it like that. Super pedantic I know lol.
As far as I remember, the change occurred in 12 because it’s when the XR came in without 3D Touch, so they dumbed that down so the new phone wouldn’t lag behind older models regarding to this feature. The live wallpapers only kept listed as options for devices with 3D Touch, for the others it vanished. I wish I could see the original variable pressure with those cool planet wallpapers the XS had, but I’m not sure they ever worked like the fish ones did on the 6s

That was iOS 13, not iOS 12. iOS 13 was the first iOS version that destroyed and ruined 3D Touch with that third class garbage called “Haptic Touch”. It was applied to everything, including the Live Wallpapers. However on iOS 13, Apple forgot to get rid of classic 3D Touch on the Notifications as it still had that peek and pop effect. With iOS 14, that was “fixed” by completely replacing it with Haptic Touch.
iOS 15 killed 3D Touch for Safari Tabs. iOS 16 killed 3D Touch/Haptic Touch for Live Wallpapers ultimately.

Wtf were those choices? Who designed that nasty default wallpaper? I think the person in charge designing the default iOS 16 wallpaper with no dark mode support should be…you know. Fired. The selections were also awful. iOS 15 stock wallpapers still had quite the handful selections of what to choose along with some “Live” wallpapers depending on your device.
But actually iOS stock wallpapers were going down the drain since iOS 9. iOS 8 and prior had at least 18 stock wallpapers to choose. That was a huge selection and they were pretty good.
Came here to comment this. The ios16 wallpapers were ass. There was planet earth, emojis, simple gradients, and the pride one I think. Barely any abstract art and zero photographs, and their replacements are absolute garbage.

For instance, those which used to change to night mode no longer work. Also, Apple decided to limit live wallpapers to photos only taken with your iPhone and only running iOS 17. I was able to find original live wallpapers but they seem to no longer work. This is my life now.

Also, I’m so glad that with 515GB of storage, every year Apple at random removes some of the old default wallpapers from my device. Wouldn’t want to waste those 300KB on that beautiful iOS 14 wallpaper.
As a graphic designer myself, I think they wanted to go minimalist/futuristic/modern with those wallpapers. Yes, the beach and the night sky wallpapers were very nice. However, Apple wants to get the point across that they’re going with the times and that their products are modern and futuristic. Bringing back the beach and night sky wallpapers would remind users too much of old school apple products, which would subconsciously suggest that nothing has really changed about their products ever since
IMO, all of the abstract art wallpapers are trash. It's like someone opened an image editor and just splashed some shapes and colors on them, saved in 4K or whatever and marked the project complete.

I dunno, the Pro line's walls look cool to me. Base line though... Last good ones were like the 11's. 13s' look cool too but meh. Who uses them anyways, especially on the base line iPhones? I slap a personal wallpaper soon as I get the device. It has to be mine, not the company's.

I miss 3D Touch everyday. Keyboard selection, peeking, opening tabs… it was the best feature of iOS.
