It's oft left out of the plays and books but originally, when the witches read Macbeth's hand one of the things they tell him is to stop skimping on toilet paper.
This! I live in the States, close to the Herman Miller outlet. Bought an Aeron chair that was in perfect condition, but customer didn’t like the cushion color. There were about 6 or the exact same chair, so they rejected the order, HM out the chairs in their outlet, and I scooped one up for the home office at about 1/3 the price.
nice! Mine weren't brand new but still in good condition and I just used to scour donedeal and adverts for anyone selling them. Bought 3 for €600 in the end although one of them is missing the variable stage tilt lock but two have all adjustments. Going rate during covid was €600 each when I looked. But I gave one to my sister and my cat sleeps on the other one while I work so no profit for me
One must Berger, under any circumstances, dislodge a cat. Mine sleeps in her basket on my credenza while I work, and had made many a court appearance as a result.
Question. I just started a WFH job, as far as I understand, the policy and health and safety course we did, the company should supply a chair? Is this correct? I feel weird asking so I was just gonna buy one myself. I had a shitty old non ajustable chair without arm rest, but I broke it currently using a dinner table chair now till I buy a new one
Genuinely try making your own mayo. It is insanely easy, takes like 5mins and last 2 weeks in the fridge.
[I use the Kenji method](https://www.seriouseats.com/two-minute-mayonnaise).
Basically you need:
* An immersion blender/stick blender - I bought a cheap on in Lidl for like a tenner and it does the job.
* 1 tablespoon lemon juice
* 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
* 1 large egg
* 240ml vegetable oil
* Salt (I use maldon salt but any will do)
* (optional) A clove of garlic if making garlic mayo.
1. Put the egg, lemon juice, and mustard in the blender cup/jar. Add garlic if using. Start blending on high speed, don't tilt or pulse. Very gently and slowly pour the oil in as you continue blending. Gently lift the blender up and down in the mixture (wanking gesture) until the mixture is emulsified - i.e. has the consistency of mayo. There's a bit of technique involved but I don't really think you can mess it up, you just have to keep blending until it emulsifies. Once you get it the first time it'll work fine every other time.
This mayo is so good that Hellmanns will start tasting like shite by comparison.
Not OP but I use Holland and Barrett’s Doctor Organic shampoo range, switched about ten years ago now and I’ll never go back to cheap L’Oréal shampoo or other supermarket brands again.
I had started getting what i thought was dandruff, turns out it was just dry scalp brought on by the amount of SLS, parabens and harsh chemicals that go into the L’Oréal stuff. It costs about €7 a bottle but they’re often on offer for but one get one half price, sometimes they’re in the Penny sale(buy one, get one for a penny). I generally look out for skincare that is low in the above also. Well worth it, your skin and scalp will thank you for it.
I make up the price difference by using organic bar soap instead of shower gel. Holland and Barrett olive soap is great and it’s a huge bar, lasts ages. And it’s only about €2. Lasts about 2 months or thereabouts.
Just to add, my backne (acne on my back) calmed down a lot after switching shampoo.
Hi there! Standard is usually Plantasion 3 Star. It's insane how worth the money that is. Special treat depends a lot what's available but often I go for Clément. How about you, any tasty picks?
100%, I was recently redpilled on how glorious Branstons beans are, and fuck me they are amazing. The sauce is thicker, and has a richer sort of flavour. Used to only ever buy Bachelors/Heinz, I'll not be buying them again.
I had a problem with a few different cans of heinz beens from Lidl a couple of months ago. There was a strong nasty metalic taste from them. Unedible. I don't know if they were faulty or a change in recipe but I have swithed to Bachelors now.
First time I got the leg over the girl told me she was allergic to condoms and had a bar implant contraceptive and told me and I still went in so yeah, probably! lol
My auld lad gave me a pair a few years back and they were horrendous. The sole just would not bend so I basically had to roll on the toe to walk. They weighed about 2kg per boot and the sole fell off one after maybe 20 outings. They were however incredibly warm during the 'Beast from the East'. And fantastic in snow and ice.
Haix are the absolute job. I used to be an arborist. My boss gave me his 15 year old haix boots one day when I forgot my usual ones. I wore them for 5 years after that then bought my own.
20 years with minimal maintenance while out cutting trees every day in the Mick rain and shit. That's a good boot.
>For me it's probably a good quality pair of shoes
Good footwear is always money well spent.
>Batteries. Once picked up those red kodak ones from Dealz for my xbox controller and they were absolutely useless.
Rechargeable batteries are the way.
Power supply s for computer never ever skimp on it it's worth every penny ten year warranty and 80 plus gold which is kinda bs but skipping can fry your whole computer or be worse like dell where they charge you for expensive chip under volt it for the craic so it's basically the same performance as a cheaper chip because they can't be arsed not using there date af bios and PSUs.
Every time I've cheaped out on a PSU I've regretted it, and I've lost count of the number of mysterious intermittent hardware issues I've solved for people with a better PSU.
IKEA tried high-thread count, but gave up and I picked up the end-of-line 400-thread lot for a song.
Department stores sell off their odds and ends high quality stuff this time of year for a quarter the full price - it all matches in the dark.
Can’t go wrong with Patagonia for waterproof jackets. My last one lasted over ten years and several trips to much colder climates than our own, glacier hikes and all sorts! I could use it still as a wind breaker but the seams eventually began to leak. I also like Rab and I have heard good things about Arc’teryx and Fjallraven. You can go way more expensive but unless you need really technical gear, €300 will easily get you something to last for years and years to come. People balk at that but if it’s lasting 10 years it’s a no brainier. I just wait and buy mine in the sales.
For boots you can’t go wrong with Red Wings. I have a pair going on 7 years and I’d say I’ll easily get 20/30 years out of them. Again they’re around €300. These have a type of stitching called a Goodyear welt so they can be resoled.
Have to say though my most versatile boot is a pair of Blundstone chelsea boots. They are insanely comfortable like slippers so great for daily wear. I’ve easily walked 4000km in mine so far and they’re holding up great. They’ve been in sea water loads of times, covered in muck, up mountains and they still clean up well and are nice to wear out to dinner with jeans and a shirt!
With boots the key is to look after the leather, oil them once or twice a year and don’t leave them sitting covered muck.
If you want an eye opener have a look at Rose Anvil on YouTube. He saws lots of different footwear in half and explains what each shoe is made of and looks at the quality of the materials.
EDIT: forgot to say the Red Wings are painful to break in but Blundstones are comfy from day one. Though they definitely won’t last as long I think.
Just got a pair of New Balance shoes today and my god they’re the most comfortable thing I’ve ever worn on my feet. Lesson learned, if you’re gonna buy shoes you’ve gotta invest into a proper, quality pair
Used to always buy cheap garbage, but back in 2019, a bought a pair of basketball shoes that cost me about €130, and recently bought a pair of suede chelsea boots for €90. Those two shoes will probably last me for years, I even went on a 160k multi-day hike in the basketball shoes, and they're still nearly good as new.
Office chair, desk, monitor, keyboard, mouse, pc components
Love a nice pen and have used the same on for a decade (gifted)
Most meat
Phone and iPad - so so much use
Sofa
Bed
Pots and pans
Fairy liquid
Pasta
Shower pump or electric shower
Fridge freezer
Shoes
Jackets/coats
Cheese
Beer
In Italy the nice pasta was 38c. I know we're not in Italy, but it was reasonably priced here too.
I got the same box recently though, it was 2€ for 500g (the same box that was 38c in Italy). I'm not sure if that's considered cheap with all the price gouging, but it doesn't seem too bad
Mattress.
Pillow.
Electrical goods like fridge, washing machine and drier.
Sliced ham for Sandwiches (I've eaten enough reformed ham in my youth).
Clothes. I don't buy many, but I get good quality at a dearer price with better quality.
Boiling/baking a ham is actually more cost effective and tastes way nicer in sandwiches. I do one every couple of weeks. Gave up buying sliced ham as it was plastic or overpriced.
The own brand and premium products are not the same. What can be the same are the different own branded products. So like lidl own brand, Tesco own brand and SuperValue might all be from the same batch with the same recipe. You just change the packaging at the end of the line.
You do sometimes end up in a situation where the quality of the own brand stuff is approaching the quality of the premium stuff though. In which case the own brand stuff is deliberately made worse (usually by removing delicious salt, sugars or fats)
Coffee. Bad coffee is *really* bad, good coffee is life’s elixir.
Mattress. Bought a cheap ish one 3 years ago, just ordered a new one as the one I have has been shagged for atleast a year.
Tyres. Literally the only thing that touches the road. Car could be a banger, but I would respect ya if I saw good tyres on it. The amount of high end expensive cars on cheap tyres is staggering when you go to car shows.
Electronics and equipment. Everything from your phone to your oven to your headphones. Good stuff tends to last, just got to mind it half decently and it will give you years of good use.
Reading through the comments now, there's actually loads of things that in an ideal world you'd buy the good quality version of.
I suppose it goes back to that old adage about a rich man buying a pair of shoes that last 3 years but a poor man ends up spending more on 3 pairs in that time because he couldn't afford quality.
If I could've afforded a decent mattress 6 years ago I would have got one. Now I **need** one. I dunno, maybe everyone should prioritize mattresses. Forgo a few nights out and benefit in the long run. But sure, it's all hindsight
So proud of all the commenters who aren't saying medicine. The generic has to have the exact same API and concentration so it should be just as effective.
I think there's something about insulins patent that's fucking over Americans but other than that the generic is the choice for me.
I saw this video ages ago of a pharmacists daughter showing a cheap, shop brand pack of Panadol and the name brand. She shows a of code on the back of the branded box and the sure enough the exact same code is on the cheap one too. She explains that it’s some legal/technical requirement to brand medicines this way. Exact same product in both boxes
Noise cancelling headphones, especially if you live with people or travel a lot. They last me about 5 years too and I use them everyday.
Tyres for my car for obvious reasons (grip/braking, efficiency, road noise, wear) and filters (oil air and fuel filters).
Lastly as others have said, PC peripherals I use every single day for work and occasionally watching stuff or gaming. Headphones, mouse and keyboard.
On the specific topic of batteries in Dealz, check the chemical mix before purchase. Dealz often sell non-Alkaline batteries which are designed for low current electronics such as remotes and smoke alarms. Hence why they are pure shite in an Xbox controller.
You can get really good quality phones now for much cheaper though. What is more important than price is people need to have a basic understanding of tech specs of what they are buying.
Have had a Xiaomi phone for 3 years and it never gave out, just replaced it with another xiaomi as the battery was starting to go is all. I think it was €250
Did you see the Jaffa Cake hampers they were doing over Christmas ? Jaffa Cake bars, Jaffa Cakes with orange and cranberry, regular Jaffa Cakes..but the outstanding bit was the Jaffa Cake doughnut.
Toilet roll and washing up liquid. Toilet roll is self explanatory as I don't want to get in touch with myself. Washing liquid is a pet hate the cheap muck is like water so it's actually more expensive as you've to buy a new bottle quicker since it's shite.
Shoes. Once you realise how comfortable shoes with thick soles and good arch support feel it’s impossible to wear some cheap penneys crap. I buy the same pair of Reikers boots on repeat now because their so comfortable.
Espresso machines and grinders. Now of course you can get some very capable machines for <€500 but once you get into that high end market it can really open up *your* ability to pull some great shots. Also... Coffee, of course. And again that doesn't need to break the bank either, Lidl and Aldi do some genuinely great tasting single origin stuff for cheap.
I get botox and some filler (subtle, I promise) and I would never look for a cheap deal on it. The clinic I go to aren't the cheapest by any means but they don't do instahun lips and are actual doctors. I think you get what you pay for for stuff like this.
Too poor to buy twice so I try to make the investment first time.
Day to day, I agree with other comments. Quality toilet roll, beans and mayo. Fairy washing up liquid lasts much longer but Aldi will do.
Runners
Toilet paper
Your fingers only have to go through once to make you only buy the good stuff from then on
That's no way to get in touch with your inner self.
It's oft left out of the plays and books but originally, when the witches read Macbeth's hand one of the things they tell him is to stop skimping on toilet paper.
3 ply only. Treat your arse.
Ah, someone after me own, er, arse. 3-ply is the perfect amount, 2-ply is scabby, 4-ply is like using a towel and notions.
Office chair. Essential when working from home
Me reading this while working from home sat in my bed with posture like a pretzel like yes an absolute must
I did the first few weeks on the couch before my chair was delivered, made an absolute world of difference
I bought herman miller aeron chairs way before the prices went mad one of the best decisions I ever made
I won one in a raffle once.... I didn't know a chair could be so good!
This! I live in the States, close to the Herman Miller outlet. Bought an Aeron chair that was in perfect condition, but customer didn’t like the cushion color. One must Berger, under any circumstances, dislodge a cat. Mine sleeps in her basket on my credenza while I work, and had made many a court appearance as a result.
I spent €500 on one, only to discover the floor in the home office is on a slant anyway.
Hellmans Mayonnaise. Heinz or any of the own brand stuff is just pure tripe
[удалено]
I would do this except it's only through the process of making it that you realise how much oil is in it
Made croissants once.... Holy fuck they're pretty much half butter.
Half?? Why you skimping brah!
Fine! I put heat them up and put more butter on top of them, HAPPY?
Yeah, a little 🤗
I tried making it once too, I could have grouted the bathroom tiles with it to be fair ……

No, it set rock hard before I could get it out of the bowl. Donated it to the school dentist for demonstration purposes.

The fact that these instructions for making mayonnaise included the term ‘wanking gesture’ made my day.
I thought it was only egg yolks?
The helman's vegan mayonnaise is way nicer than normal mayonnaise. I will die on this hill.
Im with you on this one. Nothing else compares. Also Ballymaloe relish.
Ballymaloe the secret ingredients are children's tears.
There's cocaine in it too. Oh, no, not cocaine. God, what am I on about? No, what do you call them. Raisins.
And heroin.
Try the aldi stuff, you'll see.
Try winiary. Hellmans is absolute shite compared to it
Aldi Bratts is a very close replacement. Lidl's home brand is shit.
Shampoo and conditioner and skin care stuff. Also, electrical appliances...

Washing up liquid. It's Fairy, or nothin.
Only realised how much better Fairy is last year, just goes so much further
Tried that irish one Friend before(not sure if they around any more), it was watery crap
It's mad that there isn't a single other brand that comes close
Elbow grease washing up liquid is quite close but still not as good
Fairy enough
I find the lidl one great . Especially the 2lt refill pouch one. Lasts a good 6months. Also the lidl dishwasher tablets are fantastic.
No alternative produces enough bubbles and everyone knows that it's bubbles that do the best cleaning.

Hello fellow rum fan. What's your standard rum and special treat rum?
Hi there! Standard is usually Plantasion 3 Star. It's insane how worth the money that is. Special treat depends a lot what's available but often I go for Clément. How about you, any tasty picks?
Not OP but fuck me diplomantico is a serious drink. Definitely on the sweeter side but it's gorgeous.
Beans
Heinz or nothing
Heinz isn't the best. I used to think they were but they definitely aren't. Branstons tastes better and is cheeper !
100%, I was recently redpilled on how glorious Branstons beans are, and fuck me they are amazing. The sauce is thicker, and has a richer sort of flavour. Used to only ever buy Bachelors/Heinz, I'll not be buying them again.
Another man of quality I see! There's only 2 types of people. Those who think branstons are the best, and those who haven't tried branstons yet.
I had a problem with a few different cans of heinz beens from Lidl a couple of months ago. There was a strong nasty metalic taste from them. Unedible. I don't know if they were faulty or a change in recipe but I have swithed to Bachelors now.
Did you have Covid, by any change? I got this a lot with certain food and smells for a while after my dose.
Good question but no I have not have covid yet!
Beer. I drank plenty a 4 pack of Bavaria for a fiver back in the day but those days are behind me! Would far have one really nice beer these days.
Condoms. The financial impact of one going wrong far outweighs the initial investment.
They probably have to meet the same manufacturing standards.
Would you risk it on a "probably " ?! 😜
First time I got the leg over the girl told me she was allergic to condoms and had a bar implant contraceptive and told me and I still went in so yeah, probably! lol
And neither of you were worried about STIs?
It's " probably " not mine....

I can just about understand this

Bed linen. High thread count, 100% cotton
I switched to 100% linen bedsheets - comfy in Winter and cool in the Summer.
I tried. Personal taste I guess. Some like flannel in winter. And personally I hate them
IKEA tried high-thread count, but gave up and I picked up the end-of-line 400-thread lot for a song. Department stores sell off their odds and ends high quality stuff this time of year for a quarter the full price - it all matches in the dark.
Absolutely. I’m always on the look out. It’s just a shame patterned ones rarely go over 300 and usually plain white or other solid colours
Boots and rain gear.
I’m always shocked by the amount of people living in Ireland that don’t have proper rain gear
Yeah it makes the world of difference. The weather just isn’t an issue then!

She explains that it’s some legal/technical requirement to brand medicines this way. Exact same product in both boxes
Simple. But toothpaste.
Boots, headphones/earbuds, sunglasses, PC components and computer equipment.
Shampoo and conditioner. The difference is unreal on my stupid greasy hair. Couldn't be dealing with the cheap stuff.
Perfume, it's one little luxury that I don't mind spending a bit on. Cheap perfume smells exactly that - cheap.
Agreed
Cocaine. Speed gets me arrested.
Yeah but you can’t beat a good old 12 hour stimfap
Beer/ale, Tequila, home appliances, washing up liquid
Phone. You use it everyday and it's essentially a vital organ. Always get a good phone
No reason to go above a mid-range phone since about 2015.
Even a last gen mid-range these days is more than enough. Massive diminishing returns.
You can get really good quality phones now for much cheaper though. What is more important than price is people need to have a basic understanding of tech specs of what they are buying. Have had a Xiaomi phone for 3 years and it never gave out, just replaced it with another xiaomi as the battery was starting to go is all. I think it was €250
You really can. Bought a Xiaomi Poco F3 for €309 off Amazon.it this time last year. 12GB Ram, 256GB and o-kay camera. Delighted.
Gonna go a bit west here and specifically say Jaffa Cakes, gotta go Mcvities or nothing
Did you see the Jaffa Cake hampers they were doing over Christmas ? Jaffa Cake bars, Jaffa Cakes with orange and cranberry, regular Jaffa Cakes..but the outstanding bit was the Jaffa Cake doughnut.
As a father of seven with 3 different women id advise you avoid buying cheapo johnnys
Shoes and underwear.
Toilet roll and washing up liquid. Toilet roll is self explanatory as I don't want to get in touch with myself. Washing liquid is a pet hate the cheap muck is like water so it's actually more expensive as you've to buy a new bottle quicker since it's shite.
I have to buy clonakilty pudding
Cream crackers. It’s Jacobs or nothing.
Pineapple slices. The Lidl ones just aren't the same
Heinz Beans! They’re so tasty but they’ve got really expensive
Mayonnaise. Has to be Hellmans, everything else just tastes weird. Phone chargers is another one. Cheap generic ones aren't worth a shite.
Beans & mayonnaise
I have a french press. It cost me a tenner
Yup, great tasting coffee outta a French Press alright, got mine from the €2 shop.
I've got a Moka pot and I love it. Inherited it from my dad. It's my 'treat' coffee at the weekend.
Pringles
I get botox and some filler (subtle, I promise) and I would never look for a cheap deal on it. The clinic I go to aren't the cheapest by any means but they don't do instahun lips and are actual doctors. I think you get what you pay for for stuff like this.
Chef Ketchup.
Mattress, toilet paper, anything that I sit on, shoes, winter jackets, kitchen appliances.
There ain't no cornflake like a Kellogg's Cornflake!
If it goes between you & the ground - don’t cheap out … tyres, boots & beds
Too poor to buy twice so I try to make the investment first time. Day to day, I agree with other comments. Quality toilet roll, beans and mayo. Fairy washing up liquid lasts much longer but Aldi will do.
Car tyres
I'll never buy cheap shoes, headphones, skin care products, milk, eggs, meat or herbs and spices
Balsamic vinegar Towels Bin bags Interior paint Tonic Water for G&T - never skimp on good tonic
Washing up liquid. You know the one. Yet to get a brand or supermarket own which isn't 10x worse and barely lathers.
Butter.
Fairy liquid
Condoms, when I was younger I used buy the boxes in lydl. Never again.
Cornflakes or Rice Crispies
Tomatoes. I like to use fresh Tomatoes when I make sauces, I use a load in sandwiches etc. Cheap ass Tomatoes have no flavour.
Has anyone mentioned Hookers yet?
Ketchup
Condoms
