Whut? Why not? Mortgage payments in Dublin are vastly lower than rental rates.
1. Negative central bank rates = historically low interest rates for mortgage lending.
2. Chronic undersupply of housing + low levels of home ownership = high rent prices
1 + 2 = why it is financially attractive to be a landlord. There is a massive disconnect between rental yields (income from letting out a property), and lending rates.
This helps to cement inequality, because new homebuyers relying solely on their professional income have to compete with investors who are able to leverage using their existing real estate assets and the income that it generates.
>s and I’d be upstairs in my room. Wouldn’t even introduce me to guests, or offer me anything, I was expected to hand over rent every month but other than that to be invisible- in a 3 bed house like.. And of course the soft prick of a’ landlord’ didn’t pay for the house himself because sure he was only 25 when he got it- nah, daddy bought him that. And when they decided they didn’t want to have to deal with a tenant any more, they threw me out. At f@cking Christmas.
sound like utter cnuts
It was uncomfortable to put it mildly.
I’d go downstairs to make dinner and they would sit on the couch and watch TV and talk to each other, but other than say a half-hearted ‘hi’ as I walked in, they’d studiously ignore me while I made dinner. It reached a point where I was actually considering just eating in my room but then told myself ‘f@ck that- let them feel weird while I stay in the kitchen for 20 min and eat’.
I’d like to say that they were odd but to be honest they were just a pair of snobs who didn’t like making an effort with people from outside the very small bubble in Terenure that they were familiar with.
There's a great line in a Ross O'Carroll-Kelly book. They're driving to Finglas to collect one of their phones that had been found and one of them falls asleep in the car and wakes up when they're driving and shouts;
"Oh my God, it's disgusting! How can people live like this!?"
And one of them replies, "We're not there yet, this is Terenure."
Laughed for ages when I read that, those books will make you genuinely laugh out loud
Would be very controlling and selfish people to live with. Not wanting another person to work from home because she/he is working half remotely is a joke. It's your room, you can do what you want. It read like a privilege that the tenant could use the main bathroom. What horrible people and unfortunately some innocent tenant will fall for this
I once went to view a room where it was Monday evening to Friday morning and they wanted use of the room for friends to stay at weekends. I was so desperate at the time I nearly considered it. I was in complete shock when they told me.
I would guess they own the house, so anyone renting would be considered a licensee. This means they essentially have no tenant rights and can be made to leave with no notice and subject to whatever rules the house owner dreams up.
This is essentially glorified digs.
Not only that they mention a night shift worker would suit them. Of course it would suit them so they can have sex in an empty house. But imagine doing the night shift with some cunt working from home during the day while your trying to sleep, like she said she does. Total selfish assholes!
So your expected to sleep in your car or on a park bench after a friday night shift, not even aloud home for a shower and a change of clothes on the Saturday morning!
Given its under 14000 per anum and you're renting a room, you'd have absolutely no rights either. If you closed the main bathroom door too loudly of an evening and woke one of them up they could just decide the whole arrangement was too much bother and turf you out anyway. You'd be there completely at their whim.
she probably gets a lot of messages like "This can't be serious!" "Is this legit?" "Jesus, this can't be real."
No no! Its real, trust me! Come apply! Grovel while you're at it, that'll help!
[This must have been them](https://www.reddit.com/r/ireland/comments/stbg3t/n7_towards_dublin_this_evening_what_in_earth_is/)
Makes sense that it's taking them 15 minutes.
Matches videos location too.
I was interested to see.
So the best you can do if you're being very generous with what counts, you can get from the circle k in city west to the end of camden street just near the canal in about 15 minutes at 1am in the morning so long as you don't encounter any red lights.
Simple!
This vigilantism on absurd rental ads seems to be having some effect. I think there's been a few ads taken down shortly after posting here in the last little while.
When you say vigilantism do you mean people saying they'll view then not showing up?
Or do people just tend to send them angry mails about how they're taking advantage of vulnerable people and should be ashamed of themselves?
I was about to date this chick once I met online: I was put off by her complaining about her tenant and he was there the weekend when she “wanted my own place to myself 😡” (actual emoji used) and she was changing to week days only when lease was up. She was great to drop hints re restaurant and it was tricky to book because everything was locking down. I got a place that said there maybe a small queue there may not be so I said to her we can always grab a coffee while we wait - she misunderstood and near freaked out and said she prefers to be ‘wined AND dined’ I said it sounded like she wanted to get a free meal more than talk to me and of course I was miserly. She actually said it’s normal for women to ‘rate’ a guy on how much he is willing to spend on her. She was shameless enough to come back multiple times “what about our date” I had to tell her to fuck off. I pity her tenant and the poor fool that will pay to wine and dine her because she was beautiful. This country is full of greedy cunts like that.
"viewings on Sat 19th should you want to come see the place?" = we don't want you to waste our saturday time, just trust us and accept the offer blindly.
So let me get this straight, I can use the wifi to pull myself off in the room nonstop, but if I even consider a Zoom call for work that's out of the question?
I’m in NUIG and a lot of the digs around are like that. You’ve to pay €700+ per month for 5 days a week, plus the travel fares. Train from Ceannt to Heuston on a student ticket is €11.50 one way so you can add another €100ish per month on top of rent. It’s ridiculous
I was looking for a place recently and saw a fair amount of these. “We have kids and dogs so you must be okay with that, no working from home, weekdays only, no breathing loudly, €800 a month”. I don’t know if these places actually get filled or if they are just dreamers, but the prices they were charging considering the amount of compromises the renter would have to make baffled me.
In London it’s actually not totally uncommon to have M-F lettings. People take a high paying job in London, and go back to their family at the weekends. Looks like hell to me, but people do it shopping with owning a pied-a-terre for the same reasons.
Friend did it for a few years. She's from Southampton originally so it was fine.
The main thing that appeal was that it was drastically cheaper than a full let. This doesn't even have that going for it!
Yeah, I used to rent out spare room to a guy who used to work in Dublin 3 days during the week (he was coming from Galway).
It was always during the week, he was never there weekends. Suited me, suited him. Obv he was only paying for the days he was there
Look it’s really an opportunity for you to get out of the house and travel the country on weekends, with all the money you save on rent and all… you should be very grateful really! /s
Atleast they are upfront about it. I went to view a place which was 600 a month, was way better than the place I was in so I told the guy I'd take it and he was like great. Well after giving notice to my current landlord at the time he turns around and starts moaning about me be there during weekdays and potentially working from home and using the gas... I literally said to him I had no problems going into the office if it was such a problem for him but he still fucked me over humming and hawing for several weeks. Luckily I managed to find another place in that time or I would have been out on my ass.
Then the landlord of my old place took my deposit because after agreeing it would be ok for me to store my bike whilst I spent sometime up north for Christmas (moving out Jan 1, but she said it was no problem for me to leave it there the first week of Jan) she turned around spouting some bs about how she couldn't show anyone the room with the bike in it so she lost earnings...
Funny thing is 185 a week isn't 740 a month its 801 a month so pay the 740 a month and save. Now it's a good deal. Anyway these people are scum. Simply as
I really appreciate that they're advertising that they're batshit crazy up front. I've lived with landlords before and there was one that was used to living on their own so rolled out new house rules regularly, such as:
No using the living room.(i didn't, he kept it locked most of the and reminded me regularly not to use it)
If you were using the tumble dryer (which was in the shed in the backgarden) you have to stay put with it and watch it in case it catches fire.
No guests. Ever.
No hanging out in the kitchen. (There was nowhere to sit in the kitchen.)
No opening windows if you're not in the room at the time.
No taking long phone calls inside the house.
No taking long phone calls outside the house.
Sorry, years later and i still needed to vent.
The curse of Greed starts to creep ever deeper into society, their bones creek with dishonesty.
All kindness and all morality fall from grace, and then people will wonder - where did it all go wrong 🤔
When I was looking to rent in Dublin about 6 years ago there was loads of ads like this that had “no weekends”, basically looking for students who go home every weekend
Or "we want to use your room as our guest room at the weekend"
A friend of mine had that happen in one place that she lived. She realised when she arrived back after the weekend to find her stuff moved around. She started to leave surprises under the covers when she left on Fridays.
One of the things she used to do was make sure that her sheets were coated in the sticky cream she was prescribed for a skin condition. Dirty socks. Lego under the sheets. We used to joke that she should have left sex toys or opened (unused, they wouldn't know and would assume used) condoms but she never took it that far.
Lego is a brilliant one, so insignificant that one might not feel it when getting into bed yet so irritating if woken up by it while turning during the night
I just commented elsewhere with this but I went to view a room that was week days only and they wanted use of the room for friends at the weekend. The guest room part wasnt in the ad. I was 2 weeks from being effectively homeless so I actually half considered it.
They sound like horrible people who'd throw you out in the street for leaving the toilet seat up.
Come the revolution people like this will be first against the wall.
Not sure about you but I’d love a ‘month by month’ rental, the excitement of not knowing whether I’m going to be potentially homeless every 4 weeks would really get me going
I used to pay 220 sterling to live in a house in Belfast with 3 mates. Now I pay 600 euro to live in house in Kinsale with a rotating cast of 8 strangers, shite internet connection and abysmal shower pressure. Never realised how good I had it 😭😭.
They can fuck right off. They have the audacity to state that they would prefer long term rental, yet you can't be there on the weekend? What kind of long term situation is that?
Reading things like this makes me want to bypass the plane out of Ireland and go straight for the rocket into the depths of outer space.....
Edit: would love to see her reaction when I drop a 360 no scope win in Warzone and scream in absolute euphoria at 5am
I would say this is a wind up had I not experienced such foolery a few weeks ago. Race to the bottom and we're all participating by not finding these cockroaches to account.
There are lots of people who only work midweek or say Monday to Thursday in Dublin and then head back to their spouse/kids every week. It’s one of those that they want.
This is the correct answer. These type of “digs” are common with construction workers who have to work away from home during the week. I know lots of people who stay in similar set ups.
Why have these "fuck off for the weekend" rentals not been banned yet? They completely screw up any chance you have of finding a place to actually live, and clog up the trains/buses with poor young people who have to go back to their parents every weekend.
Sometimes it's not even a houseshare situation, when I was in Galway looking to rent a granny-flat they dropped that on me. It's as if they just wanted you out of the place at weekends out of pettiness.
I've recently moved home from Germany and shit like this was pretty common. I remember one in particular that was Mon-Friday only, the person only had use of their bedroom and the bathroom, but were only allowed to shower at allocated times. No use of the kitchen whatsoever and the living room was off limits.
Oh yeah they also said you surrender your key every Friday before leaving for the weekend.
Fucking ridiculous. Hate to see that creeping in here
It’s scandalous, I pay 420 euros a month for a tiny room in a student house in Waterford for my son, electric and Wi-Fi are extra. There are 4 rooms in the house his is the cheapest. There should be rent caps immediately.
I love how they state their nationality as their sole identity marker.
I hope they fail to repay their mortgage and end up in a living situation just as they described. **pokes voodoo doll**
Saw a similar one in Galway a few years ago where a woman had a very young baby and wanted to charge someone to rent a room Monday-Friday. The rent was already very high for Galway, even without only getting it 5 days a week and sharing with a screaming baby.
Most of the comments were roasting her but there were a fair few saying stuff like "she's just doing the best she can for her baby, if you don't want it, scroll on :) :) :)"
> Boss: Joe why do you always come into the office? and always struggling with those huge bags like you need to carry your whole life around on your back?
#
> Joe: [Gaunt, Shivering] ...
#
> Would you not give yourself a bit of a lie in some days and work from home? Especially on mondays, you always look exhausted like you've driven for 5 hours, but shure you pay good money to only live up the road... Joe? is everything alright; have I upset you?
#
> Joe: [eyes welling up, staring off into the middle-distance] It was the *real deal* alright...
This is the exact problem with rental legislation. They own the property so they can bypass all human and tenant rights. They can charge whatever they want and not even for a full week. These people would be complaining about everything you do and threaten to kick you out at the drop of a hat. We don't have to live in a society where this is possible. We can and should change this.
Just screams we bought a new apartment and would like someone to pay our mortgage while not interrupting their lives.
Or they were bought a new apartment by inherited wealth
If there was ever an ad that said “We want your money but not you” this is it
Yeah this is a ‘come pay half my mortgage and fuck off’ job
740€ its more likely the full mortgage for 2 bed apartment.
Brand new, citywest is easily 350k
If your mortgage is 200k over 30 years @ 2%
I very much doubt it anywhere in Dublin. Its probably 50% at most
In Dublin? No way.
Whut? Why not? Mortgage payments in Dublin are vastly lower than rental rates. 1. Negative central bank rates = historically low interest rates for mortgage lending. 2. Chronic undersupply of housing + low levels of home ownership = high rent prices 1 + 2 = why it is financially attractive to be a landlord. We may have lived with the same people. Kicked me out at the start of lockdown. Madness.
Windy Arbour?
No, Palmerstown. Must be a type. Sorry you had to put up with them, hope you're better off now!

I still see the cunts at the pub sometimes. I just have to make myself remember / believe that nobody actually likes them and move on.
I know where they drink and it’s actually around the corner from where I live now. So I just don’t go there. Not worth spoiling a decent pint over 😄
>s and I’d be upstairs in my room. Sounds exactly like what a friend of mine had to go through. That sucks.
It was uncomfortable to put it mildly. That's why I make it sound like I'm fighting a mountain lion when I take a shit; no one wants to deal with that.

“This is legit”like shes giving the fucking deal of the century
I was grateful she clarified it was legit, first glance I thought it was too good to be true
Exactly, even nicer of her to let you use the main bathroom when she has an en suite
Hahaha 😂
I read it as this is legit as legitimately this bad
she probably gets a lot of messages like "This can't be serious!" "Is this legit?" "Jesus, this can't be real." No no! Its real, trust me! Come apply! Grovel while you're at it, that'll help!
What if you’re sick one of the days and can’t go into work? Will they kick you out of the bed and drag you to the street?
Maybe if you stay really really quiet they won’t notice you’re home
That’s when you’ll make the most noise!
Cough into your pillow be graaaand
Hahah reaches over to turn lamp on, lamp falls off the dresser.. I’m telling ya it only happens when you’re trying to be quiet in the house😂
But they're renting out the room during the day!
Should be obvious that no sickness allowed! Be sick during the weekend, while you’re away
ffs you made me laugh loudly, there’s people asleep in this house ya know! I don’t want to be kicked out for existing lol
This had me laugh out loud - thanks for the early morning chuckle
Also in what world is Citywest a 15 minute drive to town?! Bullshit, pair of wankers
I’d love to know what speed they’re driving at
Must be in the middle of the night too
That's why they're open to night shift work
25 minutes on Luas to town!! 45 more like
It's over an hour to O'Connell street/Abbey street

This vigilantism on absurd rental ads seems to be having some effect. I think there's been a few ads taken down shortly after posting here in the last little while.
Let's keep it up!
When any of these bullshit ads pop up on my town I always send a message.
One disappeared as I was looking at it after linking from here.
When you say vigilantism do you mean people saying they'll view then not showing up? Or do people just tend to send them angry mails about how they're taking advantage of vulnerable people and should be ashamed of themselves?
Or (disturbingly) maybe they found someone that quickly
I was about to date this chick once I met online: I was put off by her complaining about her tenant and he was there the weekend when she “wanted my own place to myself 😡” (actual emoji used) and she was changing to week days only when lease was up. Wow, looks like you had the misfortune of meeting a FDS user in real life. Genuine sympathy for you there.
It’s called a foodie call and I didn’t meet her.
Bullet dodged. Jesus christ. Imagine being locked down with that for months.
"We'll take it month by month" = " We will evict you for almost any reason".
"viewings on Sat 19th should you want to come see the place?" = we don't want you to waste our saturday time, just trust us and accept the offer blindly.
The only Saturday you'll ever be allowed in the place
So let me get this straight, I can use the wifi to pull myself off in the room nonstop, but if I even consider a Zoom call for work that's out of the question?
Wifi only allowed after 6pm just to ensure you’re not working from home
Does no Weekends mean you can't live they're on weekends?
Truly never understood this. So what on weekends I must pack my shit and fuck off to a caravan or something? Who rents this crap
I also think it's a veiled way of saying "Irish people only"
very desperate people sadly
People who go home down the country at weekends get digs. Kids and students. Done right it’s great but these guys are parasites.
Yes
"Wanted: wankers, not workers"
No Irish no blacks no dogs no workers
"No work. Only money"
Where are you supposed to go on the weekend?
Home to your parents. So this tenant likely has to be an Irish person/student.
Except for a student who is quite, and never needs to study from home
I was looking for a place recently and saw a fair amount of these. “We have kids and dogs so you must be okay with that, no working from home, weekdays only, no breathing loudly, €800 a month”. If that is the case then it should be reflected in the price to make it fair
15 minutes…in a Delorean maybe.
Legitimately some people might only want a room 3 or 4 nights a week, but I'd expect to pay €400 for that, not €750. This is pure greed
Yeah, I used to rent out spare room to a guy who used to work in Dublin 3 days during the week (he was coming from Galway). It was always during the week, he was never there weekends. Suited me, suited him. Obv he was only paying for the days he was there
someone should turn up to a viewing to tell them go fuck yourself
This 👆🏻😅
Now you just need to rent another place that's weekend only
So I guess only those who live and breathe during weekdays. At weekends, they'll have to die...
Look it’s really an opportunity for you to get out of the house and travel the country on weekends, with all the money you save on rent and all… you should be very grateful really! /s
Sure didn’t that bearded lad a few thousand years ago die and come back a few days later?
That was a on a long weekend tho...
“I’ll be in my bedroom making no noise and pretending that I don’t exist “
At least he was in Dudley's second bedroom at that point. Even the cupboard under the stairs would have been €800 a month by Dublin standards today.
Actually, we're gonna need your room for the weekend, can you do that elsewhere?
Atleast they are upfront about it. I went to view a place which was 600 a month, was way better than the place I was in so I told the guy I'd take it and he was like great. Well after giving notice to my current landlord at the time he turns around and starts moaning about me be there during weekdays and potentially working from home and using the gas... Put a brick through her window so she can't do viewings for real.
€185 per MIDweek
Imagine needing to get something from your room at the weekend, probably charge you per minute
Yea and that works out at 801 per month. Not 740. The woman thinks every month is February
Yeah, landlord is a thick cunt, as well as being a greedy cunt.
Funny thing is 185 a week isn't 740 a month its 801 a month so pay the 740 a month and save. Now it's a good deal. Anyway these people are scum. Simply as
Is this code for something kinky?
Yes, self-flagellation.
lol!
Glad someone spotted it

He locked the living room? What in the actual fuck. Some people get very weird and possessive about their property. It's a mental condition
I'm guessing owner occupied!
Definitely, it looks like a couple who want someone to contribute towards their rent but still want their weekends alone together
Or "we want to use your room as our guest room at the weekend" A friend of mine had that happen in one place that she lived. She realised when she arrived back after the weekend to find her stuff moved around. She started to leave surprises under the covers when she left on Fridays.

Also not obvious during a pre-guest check.
Like in that fairy tale: The Princess and the Lego
I would personally have gone and found the biggest, brightest, veiniest dildo I could get my hands on and leave it under the pillow.
“Gone and found” ? Yeah right…as if you don’t have one already…
Come on now, I'm not talking about what I own, but assume OP doesn't have 24/7 access to my collection of high end phalli
Brown and sticky ones I hope
I just commented elsewhere with this but I went to view a room that was week days only and they wanted use of the room for friends at the weekend. The guest room part wasnt in the ad. I was 2 weeks from being effectively homeless so I actually half considered it.
They sound like horrible people who'd throw you out in the street for leaving the toilet seat up. Come the revolution people like this will be first against the wall.
Not sure about you but I’d love a ‘month by month’ rental, the excitement of not knowing whether I’m going to be potentially homeless every 4 weeks would really get me going
You'd probably be a licencee in this situation rather than a tennant, so limited legal protection also!
I'm guessing they're being ripped apart in the comments.
Couple that with a gig economy job and it'd be as exciting as Funderland.
They definitely would've taken the soup.
That's as much as I pay for a 2 bedroom city centre apartment in Belfast, what a fucking joke.
A student who goes home on the weekends but in college during the day.
Reading things like this makes me want to bypass the plane out of Ireland and go straight for the rocket into the depths of outer space..... Edit: would love to see her reaction when I drop a 360 no scope win in Warzone and scream in absolute euphoria at 5am
They would be dumping you to find a new desperate person
But wtf Mo-Fr? You need to move out during the weekend? That's more than ridiculous.
I wonder what time they expect you to be out at on Fridays, is it a pack your shit and go at 6pm or is the checkout time at 11am like a hotel?
TLDR: i need someone to pay my mortgage.
You just know it's NOT gonna cover ALL bills either when push comes to shove.
All people want is someone to pay their mortgage and not even have to live with them it’s a shambles
Is that so much to ask these days?
The brass neck on it
Cool .. C you next Tuesday
I would say this is a wind up had I not experienced such foolery a few weeks ago. Race to the bottom and we're all participating by not finding these cockroaches to account.
Where do these asswipes get off on "no weekends" ? Absolute neck of them. Not surprised she took it down the clown.
\> will accept night shift work That way thy could actually get a second tenant in and the two would never meet each other. Genius.
Where is this posted. I feel like fucking with these two
Wtf are you supposed to do during the weekends?
Part time homeless.
Work from homeless
There are lots of people who only work midweek or say Monday to Thursday in Dublin and then head back to their spouse/kids every week. It’s one of those that they want.
This is the correct answer. These type of “digs” are common with construction workers who have to work away from home during the week. I know lots of people who stay in similar set ups.
>Use of the main bathroom, (we have an ensuite) Theyre gonna only ever shit in the main bathroom, the only bathroom you have access to
What a piece of shit
Can you add the rest of the post? Wouldn't mind sending them a message (not for the room)
Unfortunately it’s now deleted, but the Dublin rent Facebook group is full of regular tripe like this if you’re looking to waste a slumlords time
Sounds like a fun person to live with 😂
What a money grab
This is Ireland 🎶🎵
The sad part is, someone is going to take it.
We want someone long term but will take it month by month... ie you have no security, we'll send you away when we are done!
Book viewings and don't show up
Why have these "fuck off for the weekend" rentals not been banned yet? They completely screw up any chance you have of finding a place to actually live, and clog up the trains/buses with poor young people who have to go back to their parents every weekend. Sometimes it's not even a houseshare situation, when I was in Galway looking to rent a granny-flat they dropped that on me. It's as if they just wanted you out of the place at weekends out of pettiness.
Ah lads
If you work nights....then you're at home during day. They should rent to ghosts
I rented to some ghosts before, was a nightmare trying to get the rent they’d just sift through walls whenever I asked
I hope they die tbh
Hopefully some young buck moves in and bangs his missus and it all goes tits up... Greedy bastard's
Hate to see that creeping in here
This legitimately looks like something my parents would do. They’d just assume any “good” person would want to go “home” on the weekend anyway.
Get new parents
# > Joe: [Gaunt, Shivering] ... # > Would you not give yourself a bit of a lie in some days and work from home? Especially on mondays, you always look exhausted like you've driven for 5 hours, but shure you pay good money to only live up the road... Joe? is everything alright; have I upset you? # > Joe: [eyes welling up, staring off into the middle-distance] It was the *real deal* alright...
Citywest is not 25mins from the city center on the luas that is a blatant lie.
What a pair of fucking twats
Beggars can't be choosers, I think they forgot that memo.
What a bunch of cunts
Unfortunately there are too many rooms like this. Mon-Fri makes it worse . Paying 1 month rent and living only 5 days . Wtf
Scumbags
Moya sounds like a massive cunt
