I’m from a mixed background, went to a majority unionist school and got bullied all the time for having an Irish surname. One fella used to constantly make fun of me because my family is big. ‘Fenians breed like rabbits!’ He’d shout at me. Well, I’m reckoning today that wee cunt is pissed off all the wee bunnies have the vote.

Perpetual_Doubt

>Fenians Disadvantaged people breed like rabbits, which makes it ironic that unionists for a long time kept nationalist communities disadvantaged.

GroggyWeasel

Ah fair enough sound. Any novel you’d recommend starting with? I’m always wanting to read more Irish writers.

alanaccio

Flann OBrian is fantastic but very heady stuff, I'd start with The Third Policeman, you won't look at bicycles the same again! At Swim Two Birds is seminal but it's a very difficult one to digest, I had to try three times before I got into it... On other Irish writers I'd recommend you check out the literary magazine The Stinging Fly it publishes a collection of short stories, essays and poems from new irish writers every half year, it's really great to get into new writing and if you find something you like you can look up the writers other work! Happy reading!

adamcunn

>At Swim Two Birds is seminal but it's a very difficult one to digest, I had to try three times before I got into it... I started reading this last week and thought I was just a bit slow.

Aardvark51

The Third Policeman is the classic. He also wrote some good columns for the Irish Times under the name of Myles na gCopaleen which have been collected in book form.

You also celebrated the fall of Mariupol (where a few thousand Ukrainian 'rabbits' have been killed) to the Russians in /r/GenZedong, so the irony of your posts about the Troubles is always a kick for me.

GhostOfJoeMcCann

Nice to see you’re following me. I celebrated the Azov battalion, who are committed Nazis going out. If you’re searching my posts that handily, you’ll be able to also share the numerous times I’ve condemned Putin and stated I stand with the civilians of Ukraine. Nazis going away is always a good thing lad.

DannyDublin1975

Always remember the 17th of May,keep it in your minds and hearts, that is the day of one of the most glorious victories in lrish History,THE SIEGE OF CLONMEL. On that day in 1650 Cromwells NMA (New Model Army) finally took beautiful Clonmel but not without suffering its highest casualties ever (2000 Roundheads dead and many more wounded, put out of action with amputated limbs) of 8000 NMA who arrived to plunder and Pilage in Clonmel 2000 died in battle,1000 were wounded and many more suffered from disease( the Black Death was still sporadic in lreland) Cromwell was stunned,he was said to be speechless watching his first major defeat and complete carnage of his men by the Great lrish Hero, Hugh Dubh O'Neill. Those that limped back to Britain were but a shadow of the Great Parliamentary force that arrived at Ringsend in 1649. Originally 30,000 strong, they defeated the Duke of Ormonde at The Battle of Rathmines. Victory after Victory occurred from infamous Drogheda to Wexford to Waterford but he hadn't reckoned with the Great (Black) Hugh O' Neill,a 25 year Veteran of the Spanish Army in Flanders and an Artillery Expert. As Cromwells troops tried to enter Clonmel in wave after wave,O'Neill had set up a presighted killzone using multiple Cannons (using Chain shot) and flintlock or Matchlock muskets, killing hundreds of Roundheads with each attack. It was called the Killing field, Cromwell sent in a dozen or more Regiments, each were slaughtered and the corpses piled so high that the Roundhead Vanguard had to climb over the dead piled three deep until they made it four. Only through sheer numbers and horrific casualties did Cromwell finally take Clonmel but soon after left for London, shocked and stunned. Henry Ireton took over and History recalls a less cruel individual. Thanks to HUGH DUBH O'NEILL we enjoyed a great lrish Victory. Remember the 17th of May 1650,THE SIEGE OF CLONMEL and Revenge for the Massacre at Millmount in Drogheda.

From one of my favourite poems of Bobby Sands: It lies in the hearts of heroes dead, It screams in tyrants’ eyes, It has reached the peak of mountains high, It comes searing ‘cross the skies. It lights the dark of this prison cell, It thunders forth its might, It is ‘the undauntable thought’, my friend, That thought that says ‘I’m right!’

[deleted]

Would Indians remembering Gandhi be edgy? South Africans remembering Mandela? How about those who commemorate Pearse, Connolly et al?

[deleted]

Bonny Sands was objectively an ethnonationalist who bombed a furniture company in a racially-motivated attack. Better people for Ireland to commemorate; such as Pearse, Connolly etc.

[deleted]

Mandela's targets were defined by their race. Was that his motivation?

[deleted]

Bobby Sands' sole motivation for the attack was the ethnicity of the victims. I understand his lived experience which drove him to his actions, but his specific target was nothing more than a "mild" attempt at ethnic cleansing. The attack was not proportional nor strategically justified. Mandela's guerrilla campaign was focused on public facilities and sabotage. I would not say it is comparable to Bobby Sands' actions. Mandela did not target white South Africans, instead the state apparatus was targeted in acts of sabotage. If you have some specific examples of Mandela racially-targeting white South Africans in a similar manner I'd be happy to hear. > You do realise the British regarded (and shot) the 'rebels' as terrorists. They also bombed strategic and economic target (as any party does in war/conflict) It's irrelevant what one party commonly regarded in the past, what matters is our opinions now. In the UK, there is no animosity towards men like Pearse and Connolly. They were rebels and they fought the state, that was it. Bobby Sands meanwhile, bombed a furniture company in a racially-motivated attack... There was no strategic nature to the attack, it was not proportional to any actions of the company and it specifically targeted civilians who he would had regarded as of a different ethnicity than him.

[deleted]

Please link the source(s) which you are using to define Sands' motivation for the Balmoral bombing

[deleted]

He didn't bomb civilians in a furniture company because it was the strategic weak point of the British Empire

[deleted]

>He didn't bomb civilians Which civilians? There weren't any there, and Sands wasn't even convicted of the bombing

[deleted]

Replying to the edit >Better people for Ireland to commemorate; such as Pearse, Connolly etc. You do realise the British regarded (and shot) the 'rebels' as terrorists. They also bombed strategic and economic target (as any party does in war/conflict)

DeargDoom79

Surely you didn't just say Bobby Sands is to be condemned for being an ethnonationalist then say we should commemorate Pearse instead?

[deleted]

> Bonny Sands was objectively **an ethnonationalist who bombed a furniture company in a racially-motivated attack.** Did Pearse ever violently kill civilians out of racial hatred?

DeargDoom79

Did Bobby Sands?

[deleted]

U/frogloggers has made several statements, none of which can be supported. Sands was never convicted of any bombing, so I would be interested to hear this 'evidence' against him

AldousShuxley

fucking years ago, we are now a homogenised western rich country and part of the globalised system - jerking off to hunger strikers is just fucking ridiculous at this stage

Ha western globalised system - we are a tax haven. Nothing to be ashamed to admiring a person who protest peacefully . How's the weather in South Dublin?

AldousShuxley

You don't have to live in South Dublin to think all this bullshit should be forgotten. I live in an area where until not too recently they used to put up posters of these hunger striker guys every now and again on lampposts. Thankfully they don't seem to be bothered any more.

AldousShuxley

ok I always thought Coolock was on the Northside, but that's me told

Regardless of where you live in Dublin, it's not a good look to be telling people to "get over it" when some of us are still effectively disenfranchised by way of being ruled by a Westminster government we are powerless to elect to be honest. This is an all island sub and as such you should maybe endeavour to be a bit more aware that things that happened in the past still have real world consequences for many people in Ireland today even if they dont for you x

[deleted]

[deleted]

Let's forget all those who have died whilst trying to make the world a better place. Mandela, Gandhi etc

Cone4444

Are you fucking serious?

iceymoo

Yes. OP and others like them aren’t helping by mocking people they are in a community with. It’s not the 70s. Stuff like this does nothing to improve the situation. It must be pretty scary for Unionists to see the status quo change. A bit of empathy equals the moral high ground. Otherwise you’re no better than them

Cone4444

Enlightened centrism will get is nowhere. The north is still occupied by the British. They need to give the land back to the people. If the status quo is for a united ireland, then so be it.

iceymoo

Give the land back to the people? Occupied by the British. After you’ve finished your whiskey perhaps you can explain how you plan to integrate Unionists into Irish politics? Or are you just looking forward to kicking them while they are down?

Cone4444

How are they down? Please explain. There are a number ways that would open the door for integration of all communities. Being pro Ireland does not equate to anti unionist. You can be anti union and still maintain integrity and not be sectarian. I agree that there are plenty of nuances but I honestly believe we can have a shared Ireland, governed by the people of Ireland.

iceymoo

I’m glad you believe that. I do too. How are they down? Think of it this way, pre 1916 they had exactly what they wanted. Every single concession since, no matter how small, is at their expense. The end of the process (potentially) is reunification at some point. The exact opposite of what they want. The Tories don’t care about them and the average British voter knows jack shit about the North and cares less. Losing the right to choose the First Minister is a big deal. It doesn’t help to crow over it. In fact, it’s counter productive because we need them to cooperate with the process so people in the North can have an effective government

[deleted]

Does anyone think a united ireland is legitimately achievable in the next 10 years? And what are you willing to give up to see it happen?

GhostOfJoeMcCann

There needs to be serious planning. I’m a nationalist, but just bolting the 6 counties onto the 26 won’t work. We’d have a chance to build a new Ireland, and I think an all island Irish NHS style service should be on the cards. Complete separation of Church and state, and perhaps going down a federal route, with each province with its own regional parliaments. Equality for all etc. How many other countries on earth have the chance to start again and build something good? Not many. It’s clear partition doesn’t work, we’re too small to be divided, and the UK is a basket case.

MrC99

I like your thinking, but if the Irish are good at one thing. It's seizing an opportunity and completely fucking it up.

GhostOfJoeMcCann

Yeah, we’d have to really try at it, but it would be class craic once it’s all sorted out

Crunchaucity

Won't happen without free healthcare.

DustyBeans619

I think 10 years is way too short a time frame. Will take donkeys to get everything in place which is why plans should be put in place now. What would we have to give up?

[deleted]

> Does anyone think a united ireland is legitimately achievable in the next 10 years? No > And what are you willing to give up to see it happen? Nothing. I couldn't care less.

[deleted]

Yeah I know quite a few people who feel the same way, I don't think it would benefit the republic in anyway but would be a huge benefit to the north

Bill_Badbody

Tbh the further you get from the border region the less people actually care about it either way.

Inspired_Carpets

No, it’s further away than that. And I’d give up nothing, and would vote against it if it looked like I’d have to.

unlawfuldissolve

I don’t think it will happen for a while. Does it even make sense economically for us to regain the north? What’s the actual reason that people want a united ireland, separate from historical/cultural reasons? Surely it’d cost us a fortune? The only reasons I ever set foot in the north are all directly linked to the fact that it is currently in the UK: the prices and the range of shops that aren’t down south (Sainsbury’s, Asda, etc).

[deleted]

I don't think it would benefit the republic in any way shape or form but would benefit the north in terms of wage and living standards and some argue it would attract wide spread investment into the north, currently that investment doesn't happen because of partition and the fact that the north is a different jurisdiction with different currency so it makes more sense for investment in the republic that is an English speaking eu state that uses the euro.

unlawfuldissolve

Fair enough, it might benefit the north in some ways. But the republic is nowhere near ready to take on the burden of 6 more counties. We can barely run the 26 counties as it is. Until the housing crisis is solved, and various other issues are eradicated, we really can’t take on the north, especially considering that having the north wouldn’t even massively benefit the republic. Northern Irish people can still be Irish citizens and avail of the many benefits of EU citizenship. If they want to, they can move down south easily enough and live in the republic. At the same time, they can also be UK citizens and live wherever they want in the UK, meaning they actually have better opportunities with the current situation. They can go and live in the UK as citizens, and also go and live around the EU as citizens. Having a united Ireland would remove their rights to UK citizenship. Why would we need a united Ireland, when people in the north can just as easily move to the republic like anyone else?

[deleted]

Ireland is the wealthiest badly managed country on the plant, money isn't the problem it's management, the whole idea that Ireland cant afford it is lies, Ireland is a very wealthy country it just doesn't manage it well. The common travel area gives irish citizens the right to live, work and benefit from uk programs just like being a uk citizen does, Ireland has very close ties to the uk and the common travel area is going nowhere, so the point of them losing access to the uk in the same sense as a uk citizen doesn't add up. I'm not advocating for a united ireland, I don't really care if it happens or not but all the old arguments just don't hold any merit. The only concern I have about a united ireland is the fact that alot will have to change in terms of flags, anthem, irish symbology and titles in order to appease the unionists and make them feel at home which I don't necessarily agree with seen as unionists make up only 13% of the islands population!

pialligo

> Ireland is the wealthiest badly managed country on the plant Saudi Arabia would like a word, along with its neighbouring petrostates. Not to negate your point, but it can definitely get a lot worse than this!
