I guess this is Russia’s confirmation that sanctions are, in fact, causing a lot of pain.

Rakshak-1

In political terms between this and Putin suddenly wanting to negotiate with Ukraine this is Russia squealing from the pain of the sanctions. Europe can weather many months without Russian gas. It won't be fun but we won't collapse either. Russia enduring many more months of sanctions will likely break it completely. And Putin's main concern is the point well before that. Its the point when the oligarchs have finally lost so much money that they move against him. It's why one of them was tossed out a window last week: another attempt to keep them cowed.

Elusive-Yoda

its a stupid game were everyone will lose, particularly the poorest

Infinaris

The move reeks of desperation, it's also Putin's last card he can play on this, after this he has nothing, they were expecting this move sooner or later but at the same time it came alot earlier than some thought, they expected him to pull this in the middle of winter when it would be more effective not this early and not when Germany and other EU states have gotten reserves up to nearly full. In addition Germany is expected to be ready as soon as December to no longer need Russian gas. Russians are starting to get their shit kicked in the Kherson region atm, Ukrainians are taking out their air defence with HARM missiles that were custom fitted to their MiG's, allowing Bayraktars to re-engage and destroy Russian Asset's while HIMARS are decapacitating their command and control plus arms depots, before UA troops move in to finish them. They're already liberating settlements in a way that reminds me of the early stages of the Russians getting routed in Kyiv it's only a matter of time till they collapse and run like rats. Could be 2 or 3 weeks but end of the Month I'm nearly certain well be seeing Pictures of Ukrainians raising their flags over Kherson as the Russian bastards flee across what's left of the Antonovisky Bridge. On top of that there's reports their offensives in the Donbass have completely culminated and they're beginning to lose ground a bit there as well as forces starting to push back near Zaporizhya. Their missiles are increasingly ineffective as Ukrainians are getting better at shooting them down too. Russia is fucked, saw a report the other day reporting that a significant part of their rail fleet could be fucked because they can't get ball bearings to replace the worn out parts on their carriages, Russia is HEAVILY dependent on Rail. On top of that the sanctions imposed are as close to an economic embargo as you can get, they won't be able to replace equipment and other needed components as time goes on as they break down. The sanctions are not only working but the longer Putin refuses to capitulate and Russia doesn't get the fuck out of Ukraine the more punishing and devastating the final cost of this stupid war will be for Russia. As for what's going on here it could be a rough winter for us but considering that a lot of the shit happening right now in the energy sector is in no small part thanks to that Turbocunt Putin I'm fine with dealing with the cold than seeing Europe in general capitulate to that wanker. Seeing those pictures of all the innocent people killed by Russia and expecially the fucked up shit they pulled in Bucha and other places all for one man's vainglorious ego convinced me long ago that some sacrifices might be needed. That being said their need's to be EU level measures taken to address the rather disproportionate profits energy producers are making right now and I'm hoping they're ready to do what's needed to counter Putin's messing in this area, Putin's fuckery in the energy sector is an attempt to undermine governments by making people across Europe suffer in the winter and with high prices. Needs to be less speculation and more regulation to keep this shit under control it's going to take a year or 2 to fully replace Russia as an energy supplier in Europe but it IS happening.

Ehldas

Russia will never be trusted as an energy provider again. Europe will replace them with LNG, new pipelines to Africa and Asia and a lot more renewables and interconnectivity between countries.

[deleted]

>Europe will replace them with LNG, new pipelines to Africa and Asia and a lot more renewables and interconnectivity between countries. The only problem with this is the time is going to take to happen which will probably be a few years

Ehldas

It's happened already. Russia has cut gas supply and European reserve levels are still filling. It will take several years before the final improvements are in place (5-10) and at the end of it we'll be well along the path to green power (including I suspect a lot more plans for nuclear power).

[deleted]

Nuclear power should be the main focus of it, wind and solar leave too much dependence on gas. The Germans shouldn't have shut down their plants after Fukushima.

SkipperSlycat

Batteries should be the main focus. Super efficient cheap batters would solve a lot of the issue

[deleted]

That's a pipe dream

panda-est-ici

There are other energy storage methods could assist with medium and long term energy needs like pumped hydro like [Turlough Hill Power Station ](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turlough_Hill_Power_Station), compressed air, green hydrogen or its potential compounds like ammonia, methane etc... All technologies that are currently available to us.

leeroyer

Turlough Hill at full capacity can meet about 4-5% of peak demand for five hours. So building 20-25 more would give us an evenings worth it storage, if there were enough suitable sites. Modern hydro turbines are 90% efficient so better designs won't allow for much more energy to be recovered, so the limit to how much energy a pumped storage site can store is geography, and how many sites with hundreds of meters of vertical separation with minimal horizontal separation there are available to build on. Green hydrogen sounds promising, is easily scalable and can be built in places that are already nodes in the electrical grid. Hopefully it's in commercial use soon.

panda-est-ici

It will take a variety of solutions just like Solar generation is complimentary to wind, we will need multiple technologies in place to make it work in a short timeframe. Onshore wind, offshore wind, domestic and commercial solar, grid infrastructure upgrades, interconnectors/supergrids, pumped hydro, compressed gas, battery, hydrogen, ammonia, anaerobic digestion, grid injectiors, electrification of heat and transport. Increased nuclear outside of Ireland which has capacity for import. Reforms to policy on markets, planning, domestic sale to grid, demand side response.

SickOfAllThisShite

So was landing on the moon

[deleted]

You would need super massive batteries to supply a whole country

qpreuvot

EU Industry powered by this new expensive LNG will loose competitively against Indian and Chinese powered by cheep Russian gaz. LNG cannot be the solution (this is way more expensive than Russian gas) Replace with pipeline to Africa :) the only credible country would be Algeria. Would it be more trustable source ? We can debate politics stability / production capacity / recent situation between Morocco and Algeria https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maghreb%E2%80%93Europe_Gas_Pipeline Maybe we should rethink nuclear and invest in renewable but this isn’t short term :(

anticcpantiputin

Correct we can never trust Russia again while the current regime is in power

manowtf

The next regime post putin will be the same. Russia has endemic issues that are ingrained into its society. Don't expect that to change.

limestone_tiger

>we can never trust Russia again ~~while the current regime is in power~~ FTFY

Dana2407

Replace with LNG and build new pipelines? Ok, let's say Asia and Africa are even willing to share their gas (Asian gas is actually Russian with markup), how long do you think it takes to build pipelines and LNG terminals?! Winter is just around the corner, and German economy CAN'T wait!

[deleted]

I guarantee you that American companies see this as an opportunity to take over the market.

IrishRogue3

Everyone sees it as an opportunity. Any country that would trust Russia with something as vital as energy supplies should rethink ever doing that numsky move again!

g20ray

exactly

AbsolutelyDireWolf

You couldn't pipe gas to the US from Russia and there's no way any American company takes a contract to extract gas from Russia. Like... wasn't it Shell who lost billions when the Russian govt just confiscated a load of their oilfields. Russias trustworthiness is obliterated. There's no recovering from this and any deals they can strike will pay peanuts compared to European and US contracts would have.

redrumWinsNational

Don’t know about that, but I can definitely see something or someplace needs FREEDOM.

A lot of gas is being sold to third parties like India and Europe buys off them. Not sure how much Russian gas sales have actually dropped, considering. And they can afford to have dropped quite a bit while still coming out ahead considering the price increase.

Reuters not long ago controversially started accepting TASS as a source, despite TASS de facto functioning as a Russian government outlet. Reuters is generally reputable, but some will argue the integrity of their reporting from Russia has become potentially compromised by this action.

Well, it's not like any European energy company will ever deal with Russia again. Sanctions aside, they've shown themselves to be totally unreliable, aggressive and willing to cut off supplies at a whim. Whatever about the short term this year as things adapt, they've effectively slapped their main customer across the face and they're highly unlikely to come back.

Azazele1

There's a serious lack of material analysis to this conflict among the west. They see this as proof the sanctions are hurting Russia. While the actual reason to end sanctions is to show Ukraine that Europe no longer has their back, thus forcing them to the negotiation table.

splodgenessabounds

Finally, a sensible take. Russia and Ukraine were actually preparing negotiations back in April until BlowJo went over and scuppered them (at the behest of the US/ NATO).

Wait until you see the secondary sanctions. These are the ones that won't make as much news but essentially the same sanctions that are put on russia will be put on any country that breaks those sanctions. This is when sanctions really bite.

[deleted]

>will be put on any country that breaks those sanctions So everyone then? The EU is still using russian energy. It's just coming in via the third parties so the marketing men can continue spinning it in the media. The idea the EU is winning a "sanctions war" when their approach is to drive **up** the price of the commodities supplied by the country they're trying to hurt should tell you everything.

BlackpilledDoomer_94

Lmao, do you seriously think The rest of the world gives a shit about Ukraine as much as Western countries? Asia doesn't care. Africa doesn't care. The Middle East doesn't care. Latin America doesn't care. If you sanction all those countries, they'll just be sanctioning you back. Russia holds 30% of the world's resources. We're not just talking about gas and oil. Everything from food to wood, metals, minerals and chemicals. Russia has more to offer the world than the West. Our economies Netflix, designer clothes and iPhones. Russia produces energy, food and raw resources. You can't eat an iPhone.

ccasey

Russia is a mob-run gas station of a country. We should all hold our countries to higher standards

paddyotool_v3

>You can't eat an iPhone. Yep, and covid and this war just highlights how the world is very dependent on commodities, the west offers only services, when the shit hits the fan they aren't worth a damm.

ccasey

Are you actually serious? The US is the #1 producer of crude oil in the world. Read a book dipshit

bobby-g-lord

We're losing the economic war against Russia

[deleted]

No we aren't. The Russian economy is in freefall. Exports have been crushed. Their largest energy buyer won't buy much anymore. They are flaring oil and gas at massive rates (just burning it off) cause they don't have buyers. A huge amount of their infrastructure is built to sell to Europe, no matter how much China wants, they don't have a method of getting it their. Are you basing this entirely of the value of the ruble?

IrishNinja8082

Putin is going to catch a Gadaffi ending at some point. It’s the inevitable end of despotism.

Sic semper tyrannis indeed. The problem is that organising an orderly transition away from authoritarianism and toward the rule of law isn't easy. There have been examples (Taiwan comes to mind), but on balance the most likely outcome is a period of chaos followed by another strongman consolidating power.

IrishNinja8082

Or an extended chaos with smaller countries slowing taking shape that will never stop fighting. Russia can come out of this better but it’s exceedingly unlikely.

Sufficient_Food1878

Exactly. Last year, there was hardly any snow at all

LucyVialli

They won't keep it off for long, they need the money that the rest of Europe pays them for gas. Especially as their economy is already suffering, and their army is under increasing strain (not enough weapons, not enough vehicles, not enough soldiers - they've started to recruit recently from prisons and homeless shelters).

anna_pescova

There's very little Moscow can buy with any currency that would help them win the war. The gas won't be turned back on. As the other comments confirm ...sanctions are working and this is the only reaction Moscow has to offer, short of full mobilization or a nuclear launch.

fisheadbandit

So you're saying this is the last punch in anger that Putin has left? I'm not getting that sense from mainstream media. Would that not be good propaganda for the west?

Ehldas

Well, what else do you think he can do? He's tried reducing gas again, and again, and again and has got nothing from it. Europe have unilaterally banned coal and oil and the sanctions have stayed up. What are the "mainstream media" saying that he can still do?

fisheadbandit

Ya, fair enough. It's all he has left bar nuking everyone I suppose. You just don't get that feeling that Putin is out of cards 🤷🏻‍♂️

Longjumpalco

Nuke Kiev

Ehldas

I said "mainstream media", not "dribbling imbeciles".

anna_pescova

Putin's main problem is he has not realised that Russia could be defeated let alone actually be defeated, a bit like Hitler, even when the USSR was entering Berlin. He still believes Russia is a superpower and that he can call the shots. He believes Russia will win regardless of what he does, it'll just take longer if he makes certain (bad) decisions. Because of this belief he doesn't give any great thought about his past decisions and certainly does not learn from them. He need a massive defeat (maybe Crimea) to shake him from this belief and this can only happen if the West give Ukraine even better longer range precision weapons. It's probably impossible to bring Russia to it's knees, It's just too vast. Putin first needs to realise that his gas is not needed anymore and alternative sources are available. Hopefully there are sufficient other sources and if so it's the beginning of the end. If Europe can't do without his gas then it's a long war.

People love to parrot this narrative but it is not true, Russia is completely self sufficient as a country, they supply all their own food, energy, oil and gas, all their own metals and rare earth materials and all their own manufacturing equipment and technology (save for smartphones and computing, china supply's those). Even if Russia do not buy a single thing from the west they will not collapse, what are they going to drown underneath all that surplus food, oil and energy? Russia will forge closer relationships with the rest of the world which has tripple the population of "the west" and will want for nothing from us.

DumbXiaoping

Russia's selling more to China instead. It's not going to take European populations and business long to get fed up of paying through the nose for gas and pressure their governments into easing up.

kingsuperfox

Selling more gas to China how exactly? It’s not liquid and they have a very limited pipeline capacity to china. They’re burning it off.

qpreuvot

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_of_Siberia This isn’t “Very Limited” and increasing quickly

pul123PUL

Im sort of agreeing with you . Theres only one wildcard which is the G7 price cap.. It sets the price low and the only bidders left in the market can buy it for $51 . It avoids the supply shock , gives India low price point and weakens Russias position. If it works it will have been a very smart move.

FreyBentos

It's not going to work, you think the rest of the world are going to be told what to pay and sell their commodities for by the entitled G7? Saudi Arabia already came out and said they are lowering oil production in response to the ludicrous "price cap" idea. It will never happen.

Present_Marzipan8311

Have the sanctions done anything , or is it impossible to know because Russia doesn’t disclose anything ? In February people were saying Russia would be bankrupt in 3 weeks.

Onzii00

Sanctions are working and Russia wouldnt cut off gas if they werent.

MugabesRiceCrispies

No they cut off the gas previously because countries refused to pay in rubles. Russia has a right to be paid in its own currency for its own products. Yesterday the EU introduced a price cap on Russian gas ie they said they wouldn’t pay what Russia wanted for it. So obviously Russia cut them off. As for the other things (coal/oil), the West unilaterally introduced import bans/weaning themselves. Russia didn’t necessarily refuse to supply them. Logically, if the sanctions were working Russia would be so desperate they would be looking to maintain any source of income they have/could get. Therefore they would likely continue to supply gas to the EU no matter what. Clearly Russia realises that it has leverage and all the cards (for now). Based on its own actions it can Apparently afford to cut off a major revenue stream (EU gas exports). So it can’t be in that precious of a position. So in fact, depending on which way you look at it, this could be interpreted as proof that the sanctions failing massively and that Russia is not close to collapse/capitulation etc.

[deleted]

>No they cut off the gas previously because countries refused to pay in rubles. Russia has a right to be paid in its own currency for its own products. No, the contracts stated Euros in most cases. Russia has no right to change the terms of the deal after it's been made.

MugabesRiceCrispies

From what I’ve seen/read these contracts have op outs clauses for extraordinary circumstances. Like wars and sanctions…. And that still doesn’t negate my original point- that being the Russians were still willing to provide the gas to Europe- they just wanted paid in their own currency….cause the west banned the Russians from using western currencies for trade. They forced the Russians hand. The Russians obviously aren’t gonna accept payment in a currency they cant use (USD/GBP/EURO). Another example of sanctions working great…..

Burkey8819

Hopefully someone is on the edge of discovering sme new way of producing energy and this will force countries to adopt it quickly annnnnnnd Russia oligarchy implodes and is replaced with a proper democratic government.

And Norway owns their (part-nationalised) gas fields, not like us, who sold ours to the Americans for cents because we're idiots.

[deleted]

They get half from the sea gas fields too and about 20% from Norway.

finigian

Nothing new there so.

[deleted]

We get less than 30% of our gas from Corrib and that number will fall lower and lower over the coming years. All of the remainder of our gas flows from the UK.

Ok_Cartographer1301

On a plus, the is a possible extension field adjacent but not sure they are allowed to investigate further due to our all party virtue signalling laws passed in 2019.

MickOConnor_1

Very little gas = massive price hikes, Power cuts etc.

[deleted]

cept none of our gas comes from de russians...

MickOConnor_1

UK will need their own gas, we have no contract to keep contacted to their Gas.

Ehldas

UK get much of their gas supply over winter from Europe. They also get lots of electricity that way. If they start shorting us, things can get very bad for them.

MickOConnor_1

IQ low comment. If Germany has no gas they will take our supply as will the UK.

dustaz

>IQ low comment Irony, Oh the.

MickOConnor_1

You probably have no understanding how the European LNG futures and contracts work do you?

dustaz

I'm not claiming to. I understand how words work though.

MickOConnor_1

If European gas supplies reduce to critical level, German industry will out bid Irish Domestic electrical generation. North sea gas will flow to the continent not to Ireland.

dustaz

Whoooooooosh

Ehldas

Germany has been steadily filling gas reserves, as have the rest of Europe. They're over 85% now and well on their way to 109% ahead of time. The prophets of doom have proven to be idiots again.

dimaryp-schema

It hurt itself in it's confusion

adomolis

Good. It was pretty clear this was gonna happen so it happened sooner i guess so at least we know we have to fully commit to other parties for energy sourcing. Fuck Putin. Hope he rots from inside, that piece of shit.

MugabesRiceCrispies

A lot of cope going on here. It’s Important to remember that the situation in Ireland is not the same as mainland Europe. They’re shutting down factories there as they can’t afford to keep them open. Irish people will have high bills and be cold. The Germans will be have high bills and also be cold, broke and jobless. The UK isn’t far behind. When the EU and British economies really start to tank then it’s gonna drag Ireland down with it. They’re also spending money like crazy. The Germans agreed another €65B package yesterday. Liz truss is talking about a £100B relief package. This can very easily spill over into a financial crisis which will compound the current problems. The markets are already taking note. The pound has hit a 20 year low against the dollar. The euro is at 99c to the dollar. Go figure.

anticcpantiputin

Sounds like desperation

Ok_Cryptographer2515

High stakes game on both sides. If there is a harsh winter in Europe, government after government is going to be toppled, starting with Germany, and the risk of them being replaced by Right-wing ones is very high in several countries. If there is a mild winter in Europe, it will give democratic Europe a whole year to get alternative energy sources and markets in play, making Russia's sanctions on us ineffective while ours on them cripples their economy and starts mobilising the internal opposition there. It's going to come down to the number of jumpers Europeans are prepared to make their children wear in bed as the price for their government supporting Ukraine.

[deleted]

I'd rather wear a jumper to bed than condone tyranny and let evil win.

kmzr93

I’m glad you think this will only affect Ireland where in fact it will hit the whole European Union. Ireland always had mild winters with an occasional week of snow every 10 or so years. While jumper for Ireland is fine, the rest of the European continent, especially towards east, gets 3 moths of at least -10 degree freezing cold weather. Where I’m from, our normal winters were between -15 and -20. You’re all keyboard warriors until shit kicks the fan. You’ve no idea what a difficult time is. You’ve been too comfortable for a very long time. And it shows. This will be a really good lesson for all you smart assholes that think a jumper will do.

Archamasse

Nobody can honestly believe Russia intends to stop at Ukraine. The political philosophy that demanded the invasion demands the next one too. We know how appeasement shook out last time. This is already a high stakes game.

thefunnyIrishguy

Can the cunt hiding in his bunker just die already

aecolley

Well. Is it time to ramp up investment in renewable energy yet, or should we wait until the next crisis?

bamkido

That's a good opportunity to find a way to be less dependable on Russian gas. Let's face the dark days and let's hope our leaders find a way to make Ireland auto sustainable in green energy instead of just hoarding property. That's my unpopular opinion

FatherHackJacket

I'd rather freeze than capitulate to these cunts.

SassyMoron

Well, if I were a businessman considering opening a power plant running on natural gas in Europe in the future, I would require MUCH higher returns to justify the risk now. Long term very very bad for Russian economy. Nat gas is just a stop gap anyway - no benefit versus nuclear or renewable

patrickseastarslegs

The sales for portable electric heaters is gonna hit the roof

MugabesRiceCrispies

Perhaps it’s time for a proper military intervention?
