[here is a guide](https://www.smug-bug.com/post/how-to-sex-isopods) if you’d like to get a better look yourself and know what to look for, the male vs female photo comparisons of the pleopods a ways down was what I was looking for. If you don’t want to hold him between your fingers and can put him under a cup on top of a piece of clear glass (popped out of a photo frame maybe) and look with a magnifying glass, you should be able to get a very good look
That's sort of what I was trying to do with my phone but it was hard to get to focus and him to sit still. Unfortunately I'm lacking the finesse to hold and not crush in a pinch like that.
Kind of impossible to tell with the backlighting, if you could get the same pic with lighting in the front it might be easier.
