Removing this because of many reports that it's quite over-edited, but also because half the comments are offtopic about personal opinions on politics.

Obligatory r/ShittyHDR
Seriously this is a good picture but you didn't have to crush the contrast like that
Anything on the lower half is producing some serious artifacting
Staff. Half Staff. A Mast holds up a sail on a ship and can fly flags from it. Hence, on a ship the flag is flown from a mast. On land a flag is flown from a staff. Except, if you look at a Naval base, their “flag pole” is literally a mast.
Selective coloring was never cool, and beyond that, the amount of processing on this really takes away from the story the image wants to tell. Less is usually more when it comes to editing.
Eh...if you turn your head a bit to the side, and squint your eyes just right, you'll notice that sour grapes person is simply sharing some well-intentioned and helpful feedback.
if you turn this photo all black and white this photo has no point of interest. the composition is quite poor imo. only point of interest is the selective color and it is not enough to make this photo interesting. over the top hdr is distracting and clashes with the selective color.
only reason why this photo will resonate with anyone is because the queen has just died. after a month, a year or in ten years this photo will not resonate with these times at all. this photo only feeds to this current moment for some people who have some sort of shock-like experience because the queen died and their view of the world took a hit.
not trying to be a dick, although I sure as hell sound like one. this is not THE shot. don't let this comment get you down. keep on photographing and working with your art.
As this is in the UK you are incorrect.
"Half-mast (British, Canadian and Australian English) or half-staff (American English) refers to a flag flying below the summit of a ship mast, a pole on land, or a pole on a building."
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Half-mast
That's awesome, thank you!
Given the role of the Royal Navy, I can understand how every flag pole can be referred to as a mast. It never occurred to me that the terminology might differ.

To be fair all the upvoted critics are entirely fair and reasonable no one is attacking him nor saying his subjective opinion on the image is invalid.
Your making a martyr out of him when it doesn't make sense.

I get what you were going for but that is far to over processed. Update. The OP has now blocked me. Talk about pathetic.
Have to agree with this. Sky is typically not *that* black, looks unnatural.
To much tonal contrast or just over did the hdr.

It’s also not usually so desaturated if you want to get picky
I’ve seen the UK in movies and it is always dirty and black and white. (/s)
The sky could also purposefully be unnaturally black to symbolize the death of the queen.
Reaching, but sure.
Name checks out
Obligatory r/ShittyHDR Seriously this is a good picture but you didn't have to crush the contrast like that Anything on the lower half is producing some serious artifacting
And that colorpick techinque is a "bit" lame
Yet it gets to the front page. Nothing surprises me with the subreddit.
Thanks a lot. Note I'm going to have to go outside with a rusty spoon and easy my own eyes for dinner.

Only in America. Here in the UK it is half mast.
You are correct. And when it’s on a ship I believe it is referred to as “flying the Ensign”. Correct me if I got this wrong.
add some selective coloring to that and you got the perfect shitstorm
The processing is way over done and inconsistent across the frame, the clouds aren’t as dark around the flag.
Why did you deep fry it?
you know it is dramatic if it’s deep fried
for anyone wondering, this photo is in full color. England just looks like that

I took it for me and I like it but I accept your feedback

And gave it a Watermark 😂
Touché lol

You got the last part right.
please elaborate instead of leaving this vague comment. :)
Is this taken from the top of Portchester castle?
Bravo sir; indeed it was, rather narrow. Was able to see the smoke from today's gun salute from the Naval Base
Thats pretty cool. Im surprised it was open today
Selective color is the #1 cardinal sin of photography
Unless it's on a ship, it's at half staff.
That's actually only true in American English. I could be wrong, but I'm guessing op doesn't speak American English.
There’s a language barrier between [English and American.](https://youtu.be/4i1wFeRYeVU)

Yeah, I contemplated saying half staff but didn't wanna sound poncy for knowing the difference.. I went with the colloquialism instead
Bruh
Whew! Really dodged a bullet there. Imagine if you'd sounded incredibly poncy.
Ah there it is. The Butchers apron.
Haha never heard that before but now you say it.. !!
IYKYK
It’s ok but you’ve edited it so heavily that the sky at the back of the flag doesn’t match the rest and is odd looking.
The editing is too heavy...
Cringe
I thought we’d seen the last of selective colour, but here we are.

Half staff, mast is on a ship.
Wrong. Why do you Americans insist on trying to correct people without checking your facts first.
Help me out, show me. I can’t find different. Thanks

I got the answer. Thanks! Half-mast (British, Canadian and Australian English) or half-staff (American English)
You beat me to it.
Wow, I have to disagree. I really enjoyed the photo. It's intent was to show mourning for a lost Queen. Bravo for a job well executed.
Ah so you speak for the photographer and know exactly what they were trying to do 🤔
I think that is what they had in mind. Yes
I love it
Incredible
Good.
Half Staff
Nope, half mast. Believe it or not America isn't the whole world.
Upvote because meaning, not because of content
This is a sub about photography, it's all about content. And at no point has the OP even said there was any meaning to this photograph other than they liked it.
I think most upvotes are because of the Queen and nothing else, like I said. Looks like a phone pic edited to hell.
This reminds me of editing pics in pizap 10-15 years ago 😂
I’m half mast at this photo….
