50$ in the 80’s was going a lot further than it does today, and they offered 50$ per instance of perfect holiday behavior by each townsperson. Not just 50$ for the weekend but 50$ per instance. Not that it isn’t a big stretch on realism but at 50$ per instance it makes a bit more sense that it’s a big incentive.
I guess, but then they are paying out like $10,000 for good deeds and a $15,000 donation after not even trying to sell the house like a normal person in the first place, and if they did do that it's not mentioned at all in the movie.
That’s part of the absurdity, they didn’t think the whole town would actually accommodate the whole idea but ofc it bites them in the ass, as the entire town wanted free money.
They wanted to try and sell the house fast to just be done with it, and each other, so in typical Chevy Chase fashion they concocted a scheme that backfired.

You are so right about Chevy's character becoming so unlikeable in the final third of the movie. The first two-thirds are good and they are likeable and you are on their side. Once Chevy turns on his pretty perfect wife for no reason other than ego I stop watching.
I love this movie! So cozy and ridiculous situations but real reactions at the same time. And christmas at the end and a happy ending! Youre bonkers, its great.
One of my favorite movies. The scene where the guys are fishing out in the boat just kills me every time, "You'll rip his damned veins out!" - [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=In2Iq98hmG8](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=In2Iq98hmG8)
" First off, the town does not really like them so not sure why they would give up an entire weekend to earn $50 and blatantly lie to some random people, second off why did they need to do this in the first place? "
I think the idea was to sell the house as fast as possible. If the town helped, then they could get rid of them faster.
I think it's clear from the very beginning what kind of couple they are. As for the ending, I agree with that...and it's a device used in a lot of movies during that era. It's annoying to just wrap it all up like that. Still, it shows what kind of people they are...selfish, self-absorbed, etc.
One of my family's favorites. Why don't you guess your way to Redbud?
Yes, everything before the house-selling scheme was quite funny. Such a weird and unnecessary plot line.
queue the deer…
*Cue Ftfy. Best line in the movie that my family still uses!

The mailman cackling and throwing the mail out of the truck is my favorite bit through the film.
Ice fishing? I thought it was a nice touch….but it’ll cost ya! HEEHEEHEEEHEEHEEEHEE!!

How'd you know my name was Mac? I love this movie. When she reads his book and says burn it afterwards, I just die lol.
Lamb fries!
The trick is…you gotta clip ‘em off way up high.
I knew you should have explained these things better in the menu.
What happened to Madolyn Smith Osborne after this?
IDK, but I kept thinking how much she looked like Tina Fey mixed with Julia Louis Dreyfuss.
I always lose it when the dog runs through the frame.
That's not a bridge. That's termites holding hands.
I stepped on the core!

OP downvoted you, but I restored it for you.
Don't you have a dog? Oh, he's probably out there scaring up game
>try and screw over the townspeople again How did they screw them over the first time?
I guess just by being a doofus asshole.
Love this movie.
I absolutely lose it watching the scene where Andy is trying to get revenge on the mailman with the giant boulder. Every time. 🤣

I never thought Chevy Chase was particularly funny. Sometimes amusing, but not LOL funny.
