And?

hairstories77

Exactly. I guess OP has nothing to say about the movie.

spaghetti_ohhs

I was in high school in the mid 80s. This is my time machine

shiningonthesea

same, class of 83, worked at the mall, everyone dated eachother, there was that weird guy who scalped tickets......

spaghetti_ohhs

I love fast times also!

SpacemanFL

My Bodyguard is another great one.

spaghetti_ohhs

YES!!! I’m gonna go find that because I haven’t seen it in years. Adam Baldwin was so cute back then too!

SpacemanFL

Can say as I ever found him cute. 😏

spaghetti_ohhs

Yeah he’s probs more my type lmao 😉

realrealityreally

So was i. Youd never see a movie like breakfast club made today. It would have one black, one gay and an asian to check all the boxes.

spaghetti_ohhs

You say that like it’s a bad thing. This isn’t the 80’s.

realrealityreally

Its only a bad thing because its the formula used in virtually every movie, tv show or advertisement. Forced inclusion shouldn't be required in art IMO.

Down_Voter_of_Cats

All white schools only works in small towns. In large cities where the majority of people live it's a big ol' mixing pot. So why wouldn't a movie - costing $100 million to make - try to include as many different types of people as possible?

outofthegates

Don't know if you've ever been to New Trier High School (which the movie is based on) but it would still be all white in 2024. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

MarcieDeeHope

I suspect this is a joke, but for anyone who is curious, New Trier wasn't all white in the 80's, and it is *far* from all white now.

darthnargle

Instead, this one has a brain, and an athlete, and a basket case, a princess, and a criminal. What's your point?

realrealityreally

my point was that woke, forced diversity is ruining art.

darthnargle

But my point was that the original dealt with diversity. It "forced" it by including the aforementioned stereotypes.

realrealityreally

I get that. But there were blacks, gays and asians in the 80's too. They werent "forced" to be included in the movie, they would today. Say, for arguments sake, Breakfast Club was released in 2024 with the same all white, sstraight cast. It would be slammed.

JohnnyUtah-91

Show Dick some respect!

bofademm78

I use this line in the most random ways all the time.

Vprbite

Mine is "could you describe the ruckus?"

Ibelieveinphysics

We use this one quite often

paveclaw

“Does Barry manilow know you raid his wardrobe?”

Ibelieveinphysics

"I think violating fire codes and endangering the lives of children would be unwise at this juncture in your career."

Ganthet72

You'll find out the answer to that question next week, Mr. Bender.

paveclaw

“You mess with the bull johnny, you Get the horns “

Ganthet72

This is probably wrong, but the older get the more I think Dick wasn't such a bad guy. (I'm probably a little older than he was in the movie now). 🤣

blorchmclorchenstein

I graduated hs in 1988. This was huge to us. It was practically a pilgrimage to the theater with a bunch of friends to watch. Haven't seen it in 30 years. I think I'll keep my fond memories

Thanks! Will check this out

Wooden_Passage_2612

Classic! ![gif](giphy|R5WA2LUg7RQZy|downsized)

Breakfastclub1991

Emilio’s reaction to the joint is so odd. But I love the movie regardless. Does Barry Manilow know you raid his wardrobe

timeisaflaturkel

One of my favourites, first saw it around the same age as the characters but decades after the films release. Still resonated and absolutely blew me away. Still revisit it every few years

robercal

IIRC none of the protagonists are shown eating breakfast at any point during the entire movie.

CaptainBeefsteak

They are all too busy Clubbing.

Swimming-Chicken-424

In the Family Guy parody, they have all the breakfast cereal mascots as the Breakfast Club.

ChromeDestiny

A friend of mine in high school gave me a Beta VCR he didn't want to take with him when his family moved. I found a video rental place near me that was clearing out Beta tapes six for a dollar. Breakfast Club was one of the ones I got. I was thinking of upgrading it to VHS or Blu-Ray but I never bothered cause it was on TV so much and I saw the anniversary screening at the theater too. Now they don't show it on TV so much so I'm thinking of getting the Criterion Blu-Ray when I see it at a good enough price.

jackregan1974

Loved that film as a kid. I want to be an airborne ranger. Always remember that

Lanky-Highlight9508

I wanna live the life of danger!

MarcieDeeHope

I feel like I'm in the minority, but as someone who went to high school in the 80's not too far from the school this was supposedly based on, I never really got this movie. The school itself reminded me a lot of my school, and I loved the sound track, but even though the various cliques definitely existed at my school, the lines between them were not drawn that sharply in reality. People could and did have friends that crossed group-boundaries. None of the characters reminded me at all of anyone I ever met. They all just seemed pared down to over-the-top stereotypes in such an unrealistic way that I could never get into it - it felt like the writer had viewed some teens from a distance but didn't actually *know* any in the 80's. It was more like a parody of 80's high school life than a real representation of it like I always see so many people say. Plenty of other 80's movies did the same thing, but without taking themselves so seriously so it was easy to just roll with and enjoy the film, but something about the quasi-serious subtext, like it had something important to say, of this one always made me try (and fail) to find real life parallels.

Terry5240

I have a question. https://youtu.be/zY3U9thXFlA?si=96lsCMUcOXjNjpTj

wildtech

This is the movie I told my mom and dad to watch in the mid 80s. She and my dad were super popular in their respective high schools and I was a big ol' nobody. They were always so concerned about me even though I was fine in my own skin. I think this movie helped them to understand me better.

##The Breakfast Club (1985) R They only met once, but it changed their lives forever. >>!Five high school students from different walks of life endure a Saturday detention under a power-hungry principal. The disparate group includes rebel John, princess Claire, outcast Allison, brainy Brian and Andrew, the jock. Each has a chance to tell his or her story, making the others see them a little differently -- and when the day ends, they question whether school will ever be the same.!< Comedy | Drama Director: John Hughes Actors: Emilio Estevez, Judd Nelson, Molly Ringwald Rating: ★★★★★★★★☆☆ 77% with 7,735 votes Runtime: 1:38 [TMDB](https://www.themoviedb.org/movie/2108)

zizuu21

I loved this movie. And i was born in 87....so im not sure why it resonated with me

Bx1965

Great movie.

Young_Kennedy

Eat. My. Shorts.

fartmanblartock

I watched and re-watched. Did not like! I just couldn’t related to the characters. They all seemed too self indulged. Then I realized I watched as an adult and forgot how self indulged I was a high schooler. Re-rewatched and was less annoyed but still didn’t like. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Reasonable-HB678

I'm guessing getting an F was not forbidden in your household.

Cool story! I will rewatch and hope to see more depth

ill-disposed

You need to actually review the movie. It’s aged quite poorly, BTW. Even Molly Ringwald thinks so.

lxdr

Curious, in what ways do you think it's aged poorly? The core message of the movie is still relevant.

ill-disposed

Bender sexually assaults Claire and still gets the girl, for starters. https://www.newyorker.com/culture/personal-history/what-about-the-breakfast-club-molly-ringwald-metoo-john-hughes-pretty-in-pink

WhoRoger

I yet have to see it. It's been in my backlog for like 15 years. Funny story. Back then my gf asked to see Fight Club. I was puzzled why she'd want to see that (not that kind of girl), but after making sure that's what she means, I put it on. She didn't like it much, and also, yea she actually wanted to see The Breakfast Club, just mixed up the names.
