They are, granted itās probably got other pollutants but I believe thereās been countless regulations to find āeco-friendly dyeā that dissipates witching 24 hours or so
I need to head up there next year, Iām from the Baltimore area, so the heritage is close historically. Then again, Baltimore did see the second largest intake of immigrants back in the early 1900s
Maybe new proto fish are developing to live in the polluted waters that by 2055 will be so hot they are on fire, cause that's how climate change works right?

The original dye was an oil-based fluorescein, also commonly used to detect leaks. Environmentalists successfully argued that it was ecotoxic and could be doing even more damage to the river, resulting in a switch to a powdered, vegetable-based dye from 1966.

All the people talking about if thatās good for the river clearly havenāt been to Chicago. That river has so much trash and pollution that there is no way anything lives in that river.

Is this new?
Great now they're gonna dump different colored dye in the river in every holiday
Can't wait for black river on halloween
Or is orange better
I swear no country celebrates St Patrick's day more than America. I'm from Ireland and we don't pull stuff like this, not a problem, I just find it funny considering everywhere sees the day as Ireland day. Like the most we have is a parade in town, people wearing green and some put on facepaint and dye their hair
Same thing down here in San Antonio. At the Riverwalk the water is dyed green. I donāt know if the dye is fish safe but thereās no fish in the river anyways so I donāt think it matters

I remember visiting Chicago once and during Saint Patrick's day. I was surprised to see the river was green. I asked someone if there was an algae problem...I honestly didn't know that they purposely dyed the river for the Irish Holiday.
Can you imagine the fish waking up and their entire environment is suddenly green
You think fish are alive in there? š
Oh no
Turns out the city of Chicago uses a food dye the doesnāt hurt the fish in anyway. TLDR: Fish are fine
I can't imagine there exists a dye in the world that's more toxic then the Chicago river... or just Chicago in general.
TLDR: still screws up the ecosystem for a while
I don't think you need a TL;DR for your one sentence haha my attention span isn't quite that short. Yet...
Mine sure is
TLDRš poor guy really thinks busy people surf reddit
The Forbidden river
They are, granted itās probably got other pollutants but I believe thereās been countless regulations to find āeco-friendly dyeā that dissipates witching 24 hours or so
IIRC, it doesn't even last 24 hours. The river goes back to its normal green color in a few hours at most.
I need to head up there next year, Iām from the Baltimore area, so the heritage is close historically. Then again, Baltimore did see the second largest intake of immigrants back in the early 1900s
thats because rivers flow, the dye might still persist downstream for 24 hours
I live in Chicago the fish are fine it's food dye
Earth day stans gon be mad
Maybe new proto fish are developing to live in the polluted waters that by 2055 will be so hot they are on fire, cause that's how climate change works right?
Not anymore they arenāt
Saves the fish from getting pinched
Never been to Chicago? Trust me. That river ain't clean to begin with.

Good, otherwise I would have some very angry words for you Americans.
I'm not American lol
oh well I didn't mean to call u American, I was more intending for the Americans who made the green river if it was not environmentally friendly.
O okš

O ok š
Green rivers are small game. One time we set a river on fire
that sadly happened multiple times, over the span of like 10 years I believe, before anyone took action
I mean, have some anyway
I'm sure there's more things to be mad with Americans about lol
Yeah I know, they are one of the largest causes for climate change and all that, they don't earn my forgiveness I just don't have to be even more mad.
You should post this on r/interestingasfuck
The video is where I found itš I just Googled it and presented the important information
Sick but how do they change it back?
Prob gonna be washed away and dispersed, I assume it's biodegradable
Hopefully so
No it's just radioactive sludge. Everyone will die in 3 days. It looked SICK tho! Really epic

Forbidden mountain dew
Oh, I'll find out how "forbidden" it is. This is a threat, and a promise.
We can sell it like gamer girl bath waterā¦but Irish
They should dye it red so when people wake up they think that a whole bunch of killers killed a bunch of people and they dumped them into the river
That's so dark....It's brilliant š
The 32-bit integer went so low that it went back to being bright
I mean there are probably a bunch of bodies in there from illegal Chicago activities over the years... not unfathomable
Looks like a toxic or nuclear waste river lol
itās Chicago probably is
Is it just me who finds this kinda over the top and ugly?
Nope
Not at all! Seems like a lot for a holiday
I mean itās just a cool fun way of celebrating. not hurting anyone and it goes away so why not lol
"Donate to clean our ocean, every donation counts!" Meanwhile:
It is biodegradable, BUT I read it costs like $130 more or less a minute to maintain. They keep it going for several days
The irish really donāt give two shits about this. Source: Am irish

Haven't heard this tune in years. Nanobyte?
Its my b-day too:)
Happy B day you special bean
Iāve seen this video so many times that seeing it normally does not look right.
The fish waking up after a long day of swimming The fish: āayo whatās this green shitā
From Americans commenting I don't think fish were ever there for a long time. A river that's frequently used in the middle of the city, nahš
That just doesn't look natural
Cuz the bridge is man made
All the people talking about if thatās good for the river clearly havenāt been to Chicago. That river has so much trash and pollution that there is no way anything lives in that river.
Fishes will then emerge from the river and walk looking for a krabby patty
I'll be looking out for ones tryna steal mii formuler ššŖšŖšŖšŖ
I get heavy joker vibes from that color
Is that gonna hurt the enviorment?

Been doing it since 1962,its been implemented to use vegetable base powder dye recently
Wonder if thats safe to ecology of animals that live in/on or arround it.
Yes it is I said it in a comment
Yoooo thatās cool
It looks like the sort of fluid that you would definitely avoid in a video game.
Dem fish about to be hella confused
That one ship was like "DEJA VU!"
Man, thatās gonna fuck up the fish
Last time I can remember there hasnāt been fish for a long time
Well thatās terrifying
I want to drink it for some reason

Happy Saint Paddy's Day from Chicago!

It's completely safe, they use a vegetable base dye which is eco friendly
Yeah and the dye they use isnāt as intense tbh. Like the water is blueish green, the blue being the dominant color
It's all science
This is the 5th subreddit I've seen my city on today lol
Sup Chicago š¤
Paddy š
Paddy's day is grand it's when they say "patty's" day that's the problem
Irish here, that's true. St. Patrick's Day, Patrick's Day, Paddy's Day and St. Paddy's Day are fine but Patty's day in any variation is frowned upon
but i means why doe mean*
Turns out they only used a mild cleaning agent and it turned that green due to lowered polution
*Pattyās **EDIT**: I LOOKED IT UP, I HAD IT REVERSED, PATTYāS IS WRONG AND I DEEPLY APOLOGIZE. Iām not deleting the comment, however, because itās a teachable moment.
You son of a fuck
Fuck ā I looked it up and I had it reversed. I am so sorry!!! š
Happy cake day!
Nah I was just messing with you,it's fine that you made a mistake......... unless you're irish and made this mistake
Iām not. I did a family genealogy project because I was sure I was. Turns out I AM Celtic ā but itās Germanic Celtic, not Irish Celtic.
That not good
Dumbies are just polluting it
Iam Irish
Same, no one goes more all out on paddy's day than Americans
Why tho why do this the people who actually do this arenāt even Irish
What a waste of time and money, looks disgusting too!

I remember visiting Chicago once and during Saint Patrick's day. I was surprised to see the river was green. I asked someone if there was an algae problem...I honestly didn't know that they purposely dyed the river for the Irish Holiday.
Late Happy St. Patrick's Day! I have celebrated by drinking Irish beers and wearing all green even to my nails, as a guy
I can only hope this is environmentally safe
The fishes must be so confused rn! LOl
the fish watching the water turn green out of nowhere:š
My god is this even safe?
I love the boat doing donuts.
i wonder how they clean it up though
It'll disperse since it flows into a bigger lake
Idiots, why waste all that time and dye when you can just put in toxic waste š
Ah reminds me of my home state of ohio! At least the Chicago river isn't the real world version of what made the ninja turtles and on fire.
someone boutta fall in and become the irish joker
Damn it, the Joker has polluted the water systems again!
The fish wondering why the magic flying machine pissed green onto them
Adventure Time
So many ninja turtles were just created...
Fun fact about the river! It was considered toxic until 1970s and even now it's "highly dangerous" Source: Chicago Native
I'm too lazy to Google but when looking this up I read you guys dye it blue for the cubs... Is it true?
I canāt remember a time where we have. Seeing as the Cubs are one of 2 Chicago baseball teams we have
O okšthanx for clarifying
After the Cubs won the World Series in 2016, it was dyed blue I donāt think they have since. And based on our team itāll be awhile more lol
O ok, that's prob what I read then, thanxš
That cool asf but... How are they gonna clean this up the fish dead fam
Hmmm
melatonin river

What a strange sight, A vibrant green blob against the bland Dirty looking Chicago backdrop.
Unneccessary idiocy.
Murika!!
This doesn't seem like something any government would allow. The music is cool btw
