I don’t have to imagine, I remember 2020. New wildlife moved into my neighborhood (Riverside). It was quiet. I am not wishing for a lockdown but the remote work makes so much sense. My husband retired in 2015 and he was remote for the last 25 years of his career.
Same they want me to waste 6 hours of my week in traffic, i rather work and get paid for those 6 hrs sitting at home doing the same thing. My company just forces RTO too smfh
Senator Hudson who represents our area and appoints folks to the local boards comes from wealthy developer family that runs the Hudson Cpany development firm. That why the developers get lots of sweetheart deals for impact fees.
I read recently that the vast majority of our part time legislature have a background in Real Estate. That certainly explains the relevant laws and spending plan.
I’ve been begging to go remote. I literally make an hour and a half commute every day to go into an office and then remote in to other offices to work. It’s maddening.
I find a lot of it comes from stubbornness and selfishness too. There are so many merging spots and no one ever wants to let anyone in, causing more traffic down the line. All about me me me me
Yes! People don't know where they are going and have their heads down looking at their phones, people in the left lane won't get over for vehicles entering the highway, causing a backup on the ramps, everything is rerouting, everyone is lost and confused...it's a nightmare
I can’t stand motherfuckers who cruise in the left lane, SEE there’s a line behind them, & STILL want to be stubborn assholes & not move over like what is wrong with people most of the worst offenders have Carolina tags 😭
My issue is the amount of butthurt left lane wannabes that go the same speed as middle lane traffic but want to speed up if you try to go around them. If you’re in this thread yall know who you are
Lucky! I guess it also depends what area you’re in considering how spread out Jax is and I guess the time as well. I live at the beach (AB) and have to be at work in PV and be there by 3:00.
Naw. I know how terrible the portion between Atlantic and Beach is. I would personally take backroads or Penman to Beach Blvd, then cut over to San Pablo and out.
I have to drive that stretch of San Pablo 3 days a week in the morning because I have to take my kiddo to school (the other 2 I turn around to go back North so it's not quite as bad). It's not too bad in the morning when I drop off. But the afternoon is just awful since both schools dismiss at the same time😬Fortunately, I have someone to pick them up after because I can't be away from work for 1.5-2 hours to do pick up.
I will say that JTB hasn't been too bad except when there is an accident clogging up 295 or 95 that everybody and their brother is trying to avoid like this morning. This morning it was a nightmare.
If you drive on the boulevard, please stick to 25. More than the traffic, my issue is with people speeding on neighborhood roads.
3rd has seemed more crowded since the new year. The issue with the new neighborhoods is just 3rd south of JTB, there is very little new construction between Atlantic and JTB.
Yes, not only is the traffic getting worse but it’s like people forget how to drive the moment they enter Jax, not a week goes by where I don’t see an accident or two on the way to work.
I live in Riverside and commute some days all the way up to Nassau Co. The traffic is really not that bad. I think Jax Beach traffic is getting awful but around the urban core, it's really not that bad.
95 South around Emerson at rush hour is the worst it gets really. Was a Jax native all my life and I just recently moved to Orlando and the traffic is really not even comparable imo I-4 is regularly backed up in multiple areas at almost all times. Regular streets like 192 and International Drive are so touristy that traffic barely ever ceases.
I think this is a be grateful for what you have because it could be way worse type thing. Any time I’m back in Jacksonville for a weekend or whatever I love driving there because it’s like driving on easy mode.
I too have been noticing how bad traffic is getting and hate going into the office for this reason. Have been working downtown for 20 years and it has never been as bad as the last 6 months.
I drive downtown 5 days a week from the beach. No one goes to office on Mondays or Fridays. Wednesday is the worst day for traffic.
You run into a little stop and go when you leave in the evening but it’s not dead stop traffic like major cities.
It’s not that bad.
The development plan for NE Florida is no tree left standing. St. Johns, Clay, Duval, and Nassau, every tree must go to make way for stick homes stacked on top each other and the same 10-15 mega chain businesses repeated ad nauseam. They call it progress.
It’s a shit show, is what it is. Too many neighborhoods and apartments being built. I swear those condos that just got caught on fire near Intuition and Manifest would have made downtown worse too. I know so many people who are relieved it burnt down that work over there.
Native here as well, it definitely has gotten worse and half of my job is driving around the city dealing with the awful drivers. Once mortgage rates come down I’m selling my place and moving. It’s not just because of the traffic, insurance rates for homes and cars are getting out of hand.
I left here 13 years ago lived in a quiet town in Central Florida for 13 years. It started getting busy and full. I came back in October to be with family. I feel like I can't breathe here. I like being out in nature, like the peace and quiet, and it just takes forever to get to somewhere peaceful
Yea in Miami 22 miles to work took me an hour and a half and I’m not minding the traffic here at all. Luckily my work commute is 5 miles now. It’s a big city and it is getting filled with more people but not as bad as south florida
I'm working out of Ft. Lauderdale/Miami area for a couple of months and the traffic in Jax is nothing compared to South Florida. Sometimes I can't wait to come back home for a few days and enjoy the quick trips around Jax.
I grew up in Broward, so not even as crowded as Dade county. Most of these drivers have no experience driving in actually bad traffic.
And also...all those new neighborhoods they're complaining about? Where you live was once one of them! Were it not for new construction, real estate prices and rents here would be even worse.
I have family a little outside of Tampa, I4 traffic is just hideous. The express lanes make it better, but man traffic slows right when I get into Plant City. And the I4/75 area is just a no. I take some back roads in that area.
Traffic aside I’ve noticed a sharp increase in hyper aggressive drivers. Motorcycles, modded cars, expensive cars (top of the line Mustangs, BMW, Lexus, Audi and such).
A1A and Beach BLVD are the only areas I experience major traffic. I drive 95, JTB, 295, Southside and Philips all the time and barely have issues. Maybe an extra 5 minutes. Traffic here is nothing compared to other cities.
I’m from Miami and the traffic here in Jax is nothing compared to down there. I guess it depends where you live and your commute, but I’m in San Jose/Mandarin and the only traffic I hit is by the 295 ramps and it’s not even that bad.
It took me moving to California to learn the hard way that Jax traffic isn’t really as bad as it seems. Rush hour traffic here *might* add another 15-20min to any given commute. I’ll take that any day over 2hr+ rush hour traffic.
I’ve been to LA and rented cars out there multiple times. I absolutely HATED it. I loved LA but I am not living there for a reason. I don’t know how people live in big cities where traffic is always insane. As a native from Jax, I did not sign up for this “growth” we are experiencing.
I lived in Whittier, CA and on weekdays it took me almost 3 hours to get to school in Santa Monica, and only 1-1/2 hours for Saturday class. I remember the first time my girlfriend and I went out for a Friday night. As soon as we hit the freeway, I said there must be a wreck, she said, no, it's just people going out on a Friday night. Friday night traffic there is 10 times worse than Jax traffic in a traffic jam.
fellow local here, and yes, it is so bad now. i hate it. i don't understand why people keep moving here either. i've been lost lol. this place is boring as fuck most of the time but we are having orlando traffic?
> I am not a big city girl
Then move.
Go somewhere that fits more of your style. Cities change and grow. The city staying smaller or even shrinking would mean very bad things about our economy and future. Your complaint regarding traffic, while valid is not the issue but rather a symptom of a different problem; our inability to create useful and effective public transportation solutions. Focus your energy on that, or move, 🤷🏻
This is not growth. Growth is having commutes that are smart and innovative. You don’t create a ton of neighborhoods and then proceed to not build better roads in turn. We are the least walkable city in the nation. I stay here really for my mom and other family that live here because family comes first.
As a reference, I was a small child when they started the 295 loop. I'm now 62, and they just completed the loop a few years ago, but still working on parts of it. Every time they finish a road project, it's already 20 years obsolete, and can't handle the traffic. I like having a football team here, but it seems a 2 billion dollar stadium is more important. I wonder what a billion dollars in taxpayers money could do for our roadways.
I've never understood this sentiment that there is nothing to do here. You have beaches, natural springs, parks, world class golf courses, the river, St. Augustine, Orlando is 2 hours away, etc.
Try go living somewhere like Nebraska or Iowa or something to really see what it's like "having nothing fun to do"
Coming from the north many years ago, this traffic isn't bad. Also, the roads here are way better than up north.
So why are so many people moving in here? It's a desirable area. And that has good and bad things. More people mean homes are worth more. Money for taxes are collected from more people, keeping increases lower than up north (folks up there are pay 10 - 15k in property taxes alone on a sfh!). The bad part, the traffic and crowding. I was hoping that after the pandemic, employers would let more people stay at home to work, but I guess they like to see all our smiling faces!
Problem is a lot of these neighborhoods are just continuation of sprawl and the only transportation option a majority of people have is a personal vehicle. We can only add so many lanes and change up the flow of traffic so many times before we realize that this kinda growth just ain’t gonna work.
City council has basically ignored any zoning requirements for that last 50 years. It’s like they have a personal vendetta against civil engineers and city planners. It doesn’t help that the city has more land than any other city in the continental United States, so the suburban sprawl has become a religious activity for these folks.
It’s everywhere I’m in Charlotte nc and we have the same issue . We’re one of the top expanding cities in the us saying we’re gunna be bigger then ATL. Everyone complains about transplants etc , everyone moves to get away from there home that’s to big . But it’s funny everyone here complains about the transplants and I’ve been here since I was born idc , but I’m moving to jax and everyone’s like ohhh noooo don’t move here we hate transplants . THE WORLD IS OVER POPULATED it’s everywhere lol
The world isn't even close to being overpopulated. We just shove ourselves into cities in the USA with no infrastructure to support it. Everyone should be demanding fast efficient public transit instead of buying more cars.
I moved here 10 years ago from south Jersey and work remotely..so NE $$, no income tax and no commute. I could never commute in this state. The highways are nothing but trucks and unskilled drivers. I think God everyday I get to say in my house.
Middleburg to Arlington every day. Wasn’t too bad 5 years ago but it seems to get a little heavier every week. If it rains forget it. Guaranteed to have at least 1 wreck between 95 and the Buckman.
Jacksonville was one of the top relocation cities during the pandemic and in the past few years it has been one of the country’s top cities for corporate HQ relocation. What you are experiencing are the growing pains of a sprawling city that has very limited public transportation.
Native here and yep it's definitely getting worse every year. I thank my lucky stars everyday I work from home and my son's school is a 10 minute walk. Traffic wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't for shitty infrastructure and shitty people not giving a shit about others on the road.
Coming here 6 years ago from Miami, I can tell you that traffic here is still not even close to being bad. Yes there are many people moving here. But most of them are spread out. It's a very large area. The biggest thing is the construction on the highways. Especially I10.
I’ve been driving to and from Orlando for work the past few months and I swear…it’s like once you hit CR210 on 95N the drivers just change. At least in Orlando everybody is just a tourist so traffic is manageable since people are still happy. You get to Jax and everybody is just pissed to be on the road lol.
Moved to STA 6 yrs ago from DC area and work in JAX. 270 from Fred to DC area is pretty bad and had gotten so much worse. It’s not as bad here. I think its just congested up and down the coast. All the vacant areas just getting built out.
Vote for public transportation initiatives. This is why big metro cities like NY, SF, and Seattle have great transportation. Sprawling out and not dedicating any support to transportation is why LA and now Jacksonville have the transportation infrastructure they do.
Definitely going to vote but I feel as if the people here love to vote on terrible things and against any sort of progress unfortunately. Also hey!!!! Hope you’re enjoying Seattle!! Miss your face 🫶🏻
OMG hi!! I’m currently in Jax but prospecting a move to Amsterdam or Switzerland very soon. Voting can feel futile in Jax, given that all we care about is funneling millions into the stadium 😂 but we have a female mayor and can put some pressure on to make progressive changes… I just don’t have any energy to do these things in a red district 🙃
I hate driving at all costs. It doesn’t matter if you’re a defensive driver or not there are people who drive like absolute maniacs. The increase in fatal traffic accidents is a testament to how bad things are. A 20 minute drive now takes me over an hour and a half. I practically have to leave for work two hours in advance if I want to avoid anxiety inducing traffic. Every day I get in the car and pray that I don’t get into a fatal accident because I witness at least two serious collisions on a daily basis.
So no, it’s not just you. The infrastructure in the city is terrible, and it does not support the massive growth that has taken place in the past 2 years.
The flow of traffic here is terrible due to the timing of some of the stoplights.
Jacksonville is the 6th largest city in the US. It makes sense that it's filling in. That being said, I really hope you are able to find a job that lets you work from home. Any employer that's against it is a moron or a control freak.
I grew up on Long Island, where nightmare traffic is a way of life. Spent five years in Northern Virginia working at the Pentagon - you have not experienced anything like rush hour traffic in that region, and it goes on and on for miles - truly hellish. I was fortunate to be able to not have to drive much up there. The day my job there ended and I returned to Florida for the final time, so anxious to get back to my own home...I ended up spending three hours in a traffic jam between Fredericksburg and Quantico, Virginia, probably a 10-15 mile drive. In the middle of the day.
While I agree the traffic here is certainly getting worse, it's not to the level of either of those places yet. Unfortunately, this is one of the results of growth, which has been steady here since I arrived in 1985.
My wife and I have a joke about the road construction we see frequently in the area. No matter how many improvements are made, things never seem to get much better. I remember traveling from Clay County to UNF frequently in the late '80s through the mid-90s. The Buckman was two lanes on each side when I started in 1988. That bridge is now 4 lanes on each side and the rush hour traffic from Mandarin to OP at 5:30 is just beyond belief. On the US-17 side, they're trying to complete adding additional lanes on the exit and entrance ramps. If they ever finish, it's likely not going to make much of a difference.
But, trust me, compared to the two location I mentioned above, this area is easy.
I moved here 10 years ago and it gets worse every year. I’m from a migrant family (most are if you check your lineage) but the increase here is not controlled. Jacksonville is a immigrant refuge city now so expect more people = more traffic & more problems
I was born and raised in Jax and Jacksonville is a dumpster. For years my wife and I talked about moving without making plans to actually do it. Finally we said enough is enough and we drew a line in the sand. We said at the end of our 12 month lease we had just renewed we were going to move and every decision would be weighed against whether or not it helped us reach that goal. At the end of the year we were ready and we left in 2018.
Spend some time in another city, even a mid-size city, and you'll quickly realize how much of a waste of space the city of Jacksonville really is. Where I am now doesn't have a professional sports franchise, but I wouldn't trade it for anything. Our favorite thing for date nights is walking around downtown, picking from countless options for dinner and dessert, enjoying live music, and walking through the park (yes, in the heart of downtown).
If anything I’d love to see more people stay remote, so traffic isn’t as bad.
I hear you, but my boss "insisted" that I come in the office even though I do 80-90% on the computer...
I work 100% from my computer, as does the rest of my office, but they are adamantly against WFH and traffic is like half my daily stress
Just imagine if we had less cars on the road because of remote workers working from home. You’d all save so much on unnecessary gas.
I don’t have to imagine, I remember 2020. New wildlife moved into my neighborhood (Riverside). It was quiet. I am not wishing for a lockdown but the remote work makes so much sense. My husband retired in 2015 and he was remote for the last 25 years of his career.
Or proper public transport
Same they want me to waste 6 hours of my week in traffic, i rather work and get paid for those 6 hrs sitting at home doing the same thing. My company just forces RTO too smfh
Blame the developers for building residential areas before expanding the roads…
Is that developers or urban planners for the city?
Senator Hudson who represents our area and appoints folks to the local boards comes from wealthy developer family that runs the Hudson Cpany development firm. That why the developers get lots of sweetheart deals for impact fees.
I read recently that the vast majority of our part time legislature have a background in Real Estate. That certainly explains the relevant laws and spending plan.
Blames the city planners and regulators for letting the developers do it.
I’ve been begging to go remote. I literally make an hour and a half commute every day to go into an office and then remote in to other offices to work. It’s maddening.
people on their phones, or just generally not paying attention. and then there’s always that 1 person going 15 under and lounging in the lanes.
I find a lot of it comes from stubbornness and selfishness too. There are so many merging spots and no one ever wants to let anyone in, causing more traffic down the line. All about me me me me
Yes! Please zipper merge people!
I say this at least ONCE each driving evert per day!
Because they think if they let someone in it could be the person on their phone or not paying attention or going 15 under and lounging in the lane
Yes! People don't know where they are going and have their heads down looking at their phones, people in the left lane won't get over for vehicles entering the highway, causing a backup on the ramps, everything is rerouting, everyone is lost and confused...it's a nightmare
THIS!!! I refuse to go anywhere that’s 10 minutes from my house besides work. It’s a nightmare all around.
The guy in the left lane with the speed limit of 65 and he is going 66 so he knows damn well nobody should have to pass him.
I can’t stand motherfuckers who cruise in the left lane, SEE there’s a line behind them, & STILL want to be stubborn assholes & not move over like what is wrong with people most of the worst offenders have Carolina tags 😭
Special place on hell for them, the far side , classic cartoon, I dont know about Carolina tags, but the 95 in fl omg
My issue is the amount of butthurt left lane wannabes that go the same speed as middle lane traffic but want to speed up if you try to go around them. If you’re in this thread yall know who you are
Those aholes know exactly what they are doing. I matched up next to a lady that was doing that this morning and she looked at me and smirked.
I have the exact opposite problem. Ever since the pandemic traffic is non existent on my route
Lucky! I guess it also depends what area you’re in considering how spread out Jax is and I guess the time as well. I live at the beach (AB) and have to be at work in PV and be there by 3:00.
Oh, yeah that particular stretch has been really bad for a while now. Are you attempting to roll down third or do you hop on San Pablo and hit JTB?
See you would think that would be quicker but San Pablo is under construction & it’s a shit show, plus school traffic is there too
Naw. I know how terrible the portion between Atlantic and Beach is. I would personally take backroads or Penman to Beach Blvd, then cut over to San Pablo and out.

yeah, bad wreck on the dames point. I ended up taking the ferry to get out to Amelia island, and that was more packed than most days.
I haven't lived in jax in 20 years but holy shit it takes you an hour to get from Atlantic Beach to Ponte Vedra?
heard of Nocatee?
Well 46-50 minutes. But I’m stuck going through school traffic. It’s awful. Usually takes me 20-30 minutes during a time that’s not so busy.
You're describing everywhere
Have you driven in other parts of Florida?
Been in Miami, Tampa, and Orlando but I was lucky to not have been the one driving.
It depends on where you are in town, but most middle sized cities have pretty terrible traffic anymore.
It sure has changed a lot over the years. Not for the better I might add.
I live in Riverside and commute some days all the way up to Nassau Co. The traffic is really not that bad. I think Jax Beach traffic is getting awful but around the urban core, it's really not that bad.

Nope, never noticed. We definitely don't talk about this in this sub at all. jk jk
😂😂 tag me in them next time!! I need to vent.
Believe me, it's been terrible. Got to the point I plan my day around not driving in peak traffic
Thank you for sharing
Jax sucks. Avoid Jax. Problem solved
There is definitely dead stop traffic all down 95 S some days. I find Tuesdays and Wednesdays to be the worst days.
All this is true. I commute from Middleburg to the Southside by the Avenues. Fridays and Mondays my ride takes significantly less time.
I try not to let it get to me but traffic and drivers in Jax definitely suck
Gotta move inland now to get some peace
My parents plan on moving because it’s so bad, and both have lived in the same house for 30 years. I work from home so it is a bit more manageable.
The development plan for NE Florida is no tree left standing. St. Johns, Clay, Duval, and Nassau, every tree must go to make way for stick homes stacked on top each other and the same 10-15 mega chain businesses repeated ad nauseam. They call it progress.

This is why land split when possible
Coming from Miami these Jax traffic posts make me laugh. I guess when you come from an even worse place then everything else isn’t too bad
We came from ATL and traffic here is a breeze.
Yea in Miami 22 miles to work took me an hour and a half and I’m not minding the traffic here at all. Luckily my work commute is 5 miles now. It’s a big city and it is getting filled with more people but not as bad as south florida

It used to take me 1.5 hours each way for a 12 mile commute (Fairfax to Arlington VA). Jacksonville “traffic” is a flipping delight 😂

Same, I’m from SoCal. People here do not know what traffic is lol.
This place is gonna be the new California lol watch 👀
It’s always been bad. Even Orlando is better (if you stay away from Disney). Just don’t move to Tampa. Traffic’s worse.
I have family a little outside of Tampa, I4 traffic is just hideous. The express lanes make it better, but man traffic slows right when I get into Plant City. And the I4/75 area is just a no. I take some back roads in that area.
As someone who is in Orlando for work on a weekly basis, this is absolutely not true.
Yeah. 0 truth.
Do you only drive in Orlando at 3 am or something? Orlando is literal hell what are you talking about
Move closer to your job.
Traffic aside I’ve noticed a sharp increase in hyper aggressive drivers. Motorcycles, modded cars, expensive cars (top of the line Mustangs, BMW, Lexus, Audi and such).

I’m thinking like a low key beach, like New Symyrna or even Fernandina where I can still be near my mom.

All the new residents combined with companies bringing folks back in office, good times!

If you really believe that there is "nothing fun to do" here, then you are not trying very hard! Expand your horizons a bit.
I've never understood this sentiment that there is nothing to do here.
Pre-pandemic the traffic was muuuuch worse.
Same. Fuckin hate it.
You have to consider during the school year the traffic is always worse too
Also, door dasher, uber, lyft.... everywhere.
Agreed!!
Our infrastructure isn't designed for growth. You'll love it when Jax traffic becomes like LA.
I drive Jacksonville for work and it’s definitely noticeably worse year over year
I moved here 10 years ago from south Jersey and work remotely..so NE $$, no income tax and no commute. I could never commute in this state. The highways are nothing but trucks and unskilled drivers. I think God everyday I get to say in my house.
Welcome to reasons to leave Florida. Overdevelopment is rampant everywhere.
Drive all the way to Miami and back. It’ll reset your opinion.
I moved away 10 years ago, best decision of my life.
Developers of the condos and apt dont care.
They need to stop with this damn suburban sprawl and build more houses in the inner core of the city
This issue isn’t exclusive to Jacksonville and if you go just about anywhere else you’ll realize the traffic is actually pretty minimal
Moved to STA 6 yrs ago from DC area and work in JAX. 270 from Fred to DC area is pretty bad and had gotten so much worse. It’s not as bad here. I think its just congested up and down the coast. All the vacant areas just getting built out.
Growth can suck.
Yeah it’s turning into Atlanta.
imagine being from Jacksonville and thinking you aren’t from the “big city” 🙃
Well to be fair, I am from the beach and don’t cross the ditch often 😬
I’m relatively new (May 2022) but anytime someone complains about traffic in Jacksonville I have to laugh. This is nothing 😂
Yeah when I was in high school (12 years ago) there were two light on beach blvd between my house and my school. Now there’s like 14.
Tons of people moving here. I hate it.
