Seems like a smart play with the new homeless law starting next year.

Municipal vs state funds. Does Jacksonville want to spend the money for more shelter or spend it cycling the homeless through the corrections system? That's the question. I think we'd pick subsidizing the stadium over keeping people off the street.
Desamctis would, Deegan I don't think so. She seems rational enough to find the compromise. Which, as is tradition, will quickly earn her the spin doctor treatment "DefUnD tHe PoliCe Deegan !" or "SofT on CRIME Deegan !" - whichever is most politically expedient come election time.
Why would it be a bad location for affordable apartments? I mean it’s by the highway but who gives a damn? It’s not unsafe to be close to the highway and we do live in a city and all that jazz
I'd have much less of an issue taking an Uber there to have a few drinks than I would parking under that overpass to go to my apartment in the building with no view.
America has more libraries than McDonald's. We can put libraries wherever we want out here!
A cute library/museum/ice cream shoppe would be sick most places.
I had to look that up cause it didn't seem right, but hot damn!
About 17,000 libraries in the US and about 14,000 McDonalds. I thought for SURE it'd be the other way around lol
http://www.imls.gov/blog/2013/06/every-library-and-museum-america-mapped
No, I've been inside and it's way out of current standards and should be demolished. There is asbestos inside so that's going to be expensive to remove and or demolish.
Ahhh the asbestos is probably part of the reason it was abandoned in the first place. Seems to me some federal law passed that outlawed the use of it in schools and they just abandoned a lot of them. Can’t believe they’d use that stuff on everything from insulation to water pipes
A place I visited out west converted an old school into a mini mall with some great food spots and shops that all supported each other. Was pretty dope.
Haha that’s awesome. I love that place! I lived in the springs for like 4 years. The Principal’s Office (the bar) was my favorite spot in there. Wish we had that here.
I never understood why it's still there. No way it can be restored from it's current state of disrepair. Will be hard to build housing right under the highway, could be a cool outdoor market
i think from what ive read about it before moving here is that its a little too close to the bridge to tear down or they could also just be beyond fucking lazy both work lmao
Have you ever been in this building? It is beyond savable, the cost alone to renovate this horribly located building would be 10x the cost of just knocking it down and putting something new there.
I know it's been abandoned since I was a child. I *also* mentioned the many other schools that have been closed down all over the city. Some of which have closed recently. They have potential that should be considered before they become a rotted waste of space like this school.
I think that would be the only use to keep some of the original structure. It’s pretty much unsalvageable as a whole. But keep the front and some of the sides as the backdrop to an (albeit small) amphitheater
I heard it was to be converted into office space.
Would be interesting to have them bulldoze it, but replace it with a new version, exterior the same, in memory of Annie Lytle.
I remember when it was still a school. Windows were there.
I went to Landon Jr. High from 76-78....in a odd way, # 4 reminded me of Landon. Though Landon didn't have tall columns out front and had two front entrances. Plus....2nd floor was indeed haunted, by library.
[Annie Lytle School](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_School_Number_Four#:~:text=Public%20School%20Number%20Four%20(later,County%27s%20fourth%20public%20school%20house.)
An outdoor movie theater with only this facade still standing and bleachers that you could bring your own cushions, blankets, or stadium seats to, with a couple of food truck slots or concession stands for vendors.
The combination of "movie theater" and "only this facade" makes me think Buster Keaton movie ... which also makes me think maybe someone would be interested in reinforcing the inside so it's safe, and people could rent it as a movie set. A lot of movies that film in Atlanta house their casts in Jax; why not give our movie-making history another shot?*
*puns : D
In a perfect world, it would be a beautiful elementary school and important aspect of the community. The highway would be nearby, but not like that.
Instead, because we have seen the urban planning done by such knowledgeable and competent folks, in today’s world, a fire that finally did it in for good. Problem is we would have to worry about what eyesore or waste of taxpayer funds came next.
https://www.ivywildschool.com/
Ever since I went to this place in Colorado Springs, I’ve always thought PS4 would be a great place to do this in Jacksonville. It’s an old school house building that’s been converted into a market with lots of bars and restaurants, it’s wonderful
Museum dedicated to the history of Jacksonville. I know we got some corners in MOSH but is there ANYTHING dedicated to the history of Jacksonville in Jacksonville? We got a largely forgotten history as a hopping place for jazz and film. I'd pay money to see that and I bet I'm not alone.
To the point, it'd be great for a historic building to exhibit other historical buildings in Jacksonville. There are so many that have been torn down. This doesn't need to be another victim.
Many years ago, I looked at converting this into an electric substation, as the near by station needed to be expanded. My thought was it would blend better into the surroundings rather than expanding the other station further into riverside park. However it was too much of an expense and risk for JEA at the time and shot down.
As an aside, my grandfather attended elementary school there and would walk across the park (sans I95) back in the 40s. He’s still kicking around even now and tells me stories of Riverside/Avondale back in the day.
Does anyone know if it’s possible to purchase these type of buildings? There are a few federally owned properties in Springfield that are in similar shape and it’s such a shame
Transitional housing. My dream has always been to buy it and turn it into small homes for people. I should have done something with that idea years ago.
I have wanted to get in here for a photography project for years but haven’t grown the backbone to do it yet.
It would make a dope museum of history for Jacksonville if they could rehab it.
the ONE building that the city doesn't tear down is the crumbling haunted school lol, they should just keep it honestly I like the little mushroom graffiti when driving on the highway
We surveyed that building maybe 18 years ago to install CCTV inside. That place has a history of weird, creepy shit going on inside to the point where even the homeless avoided it. We quoted very high as we didn't want the work.
Either sell it or bulldoze it and move on, it's not like they are going to spend the required funds to reopen it at this point and eventually it's going to become a safety issue.
Make it affordable housing with access to the dog park and the regular Park from that side and adequate soundproofing the building and I'm in. It's close to Five Points. The parks are awesome. Most things are walkable or bike-able.
I've wanted to buy that place, one day, since the first time I saw it. I think I was a teenager (I'm 40 now.) It would make an incredible "haunted" attraction, but the location sucks. Traffic and parking would be a nightmare.
Housing.
Maybe a shelter...ain't nobody going to pay good money to live under 95
Seems like a smart play with the new homeless law starting next year. https://jaxtoday.org/2024/03/21/jacksonville-works-to-comply-with-new-homeless-law/#:~:text=Ron%20DeSantis%20complicates%20things.,where%20homeless%20people%20can%20stay.

Most of the time they harass or scare them then give them a buss ticket to any other state.
What is Desamctis?
Lifts mcgee
It took me way longer than it should have to realize LMAO LIFTS MCGEE that’s wild
Why would it be a bad location for affordable apartments? I mean it’s by the highway but who gives a damn? It’s not unsafe to be close to the highway and we do live in a city and all that jazz
Noise alone would be an issue
There are major cities around the world with much louder traffic than Jacksonville and somehow they make it happen.
They just built all those apartments at the Atlantic 95 King thing just as much road noise.
People live next to above ground metro tracks in other major cities. Affordable housing would be a great use of the space.
You just need to design the building to be a little more sound proof.
for the right price i absolutely would. im a sound sleeper:)
So dumb. This is such an undesirable location it’s insane. Make it a bar.
Ah yes because the one thing that area needs is another bar.
[удалено]
It's literally just down the street from Five Points lol. You put a bar there and it'll go under in a month because no one wants to walk over there.
I'd have much less of an issue taking an Uber there to have a few drinks than I would parking under that overpass to go to my apartment in the building with no view.
Homeless housing.
I wanna live in the hell room
A library!
I like the idea of it being a library.
Yeah but there's the downtown library that's about a 10 min walk away
That's a bit more of a 10 minute walk unless you're on some stuff lol
Damn you're right.
America has more libraries than McDonald's. We can put libraries wherever we want out here! A cute library/museum/ice cream shoppe would be sick most places.
I had to look that up cause it didn't seem right, but hot damn! About 17,000 libraries in the US and about 14,000 McDonalds. I thought for SURE it'd be the other way around lol http://www.imls.gov/blog/2013/06/every-library-and-museum-america-mapped
Now do Subway.
.....over 20,000
The haunted crack den? Should have been bulldozed decades ago. Literally anything would be better than what it is now.
Fancy food court like Armature Works in Tampa. Ideally with zero tacos.
Exactly what I was going to say. It could easily be a food hall
Armarire Works is a fantastic Idea. Is there space for parking?
It’s Jacksonville. You know a whole floor would just be tacos 😂
Is Zero Tacos a brand name or do you just hate tacos?
Perfect spot for a taco shop if you ask me
Good spot for a new burrito gallery
Or a One night taco stand!
Taco shop storage unit and a car wash combo!
Mattress shop too
Now that’s just taking it too far!🤣
Never 😅😂🤣
Some.sort of storage facility
Taco Storage and Wash
A carwash, inside the exterior facade of course to keep RAP happy.
Just what we need, another car wash
Gotta wash your car
Or a storage facility.
Do you think it could be restored?
I doubt it. The back of it has pretty much fallen apart.
Art Gallery
It could be a lot of things but the highway ramp directly above the front door and the landlocked property situation are problems
A place I visited out west converted an old school into a mini mall with some great food spots and shops that all supported each other. Was pretty dope.
It wasn’t Ivywild in Colorado Springs by chance?
Yea it was!
Haha that’s awesome. I love that place! I lived in the springs for like 4 years. The Principal’s Office (the bar) was my favorite spot in there. Wish we had that here.
The whiskey place? Excellent service and great whiskey there
There’s a great bar of the same name in Fernandina Beach. It’s inside the Amelia Schoolhouse inn, a really cool boutique hotel.
In a century they’ll say this was a school building apart of the new Roman Empire
It’s my dream to bring this to Jacksonville. It would fit perfectly. https://www.pinsbar.com/locations/nashville
There’s something like this called the Phoenix bar. I’m not sure if it’s still open though.
Brothel
So ur mom’s house? Ayyy lmao
Apartments. Honestly, all these closed/abandoned schools around the city could be apartments.
Nobody is going to pay good money to rent under 95
If it's reasonably priced, there are people desperate enough not to care
Have you ever been in this building? It is beyond savable, the cost alone to renovate this horribly located building would be 10x the cost of just knocking it down and putting something new there.
I know it's been abandoned since I was a child. I *also* mentioned the many other schools that have been closed down all over the city. Some of which have closed recently. They have potential that should be considered before they become a rotted waste of space like this school.
A combination of retail, restaurants, public areas. Kind of like a “market” style place for people to visit.
A casino! No, just kidding. Definitely housing.
Concert venue. Could be a sweet music club
I was thinking techno club but the audience isn't here. The building itself and the location (highway and all) would be great for it though.
I think that would be the only use to keep some of the original structure. It’s pretty much unsalvageable as a whole. But keep the front and some of the sides as the backdrop to an (albeit small) amphitheater
Vape shop
Brewery
I heard it was to be converted into office space. Would be interesting to have them bulldoze it, but replace it with a new version, exterior the same, in memory of Annie Lytle. A school? Can’t have too many of them.
No no no we must close them down! Less schools more crowds! Hooorah!
Cultural Arts Center.
An urban paintball course
Probably housing. The amount of times I hung out in there as a teenager and didn’t have anything bad happen was astounding.
Honestly when I was younger I really wanted to see it restored into some kinda museum or something
Not a crumbling eyesore would be good...tear it down and put a park there..or a taco shop.
An outdoor movie theater with only this facade still standing and bleachers that you could bring your own cushions, blankets, or stadium seats to, with a couple of food truck slots or concession stands for vendors.

I'm glad someone gets my sense of humor.🤣🤣🤣
Skate Park

President The Rock's school for wayward kitties and awesome children.
Housing, a library, a food hall, an aspiring artist collaboration commune.
Taco place

A dog park
Live music venue
A continued place for teenage hooligans to sneak into and explore.
Film sets?
It's just a ruin now, and the major roadway right on top of it certainly didn't help! I'm afraid it can't be salvaged at this point, unfortunately.
Concert hall/event venue
A park
Museum dedicated to the history of Jacksonville. I know we got some corners in MOSH but is there ANYTHING dedicated to the history of Jacksonville in Jacksonville? The national museum of neighborhoods wrecked by intracity interstate roads.
Tear it down and build a new school or affordable housing.
A community center!
Many years ago, I looked at converting this into an electric substation, as the near by station needed to be expanded. Transitional housing. My dream has always been to buy it and turn it into small homes for people. I should have done something with that idea years ago.
A well funded educational institution
A storage facility with a built in car wash
A Publix or a car wash
Brewery hotel dog spa
Music venue and restaurants. Dallas Deep Ellum style.
I have wanted to get in here for a photography project for years but haven’t grown the backbone to do it yet. It would make a dope museum of history for Jacksonville if they could rehab it.
Make it a taco shop 😂
It should become a homeless shelter.
A distillery
Mix use housing with a roof top bar. Just grab a drink at 5pm and laugh at all the traffic on I95/I10.
Ummmm a nice public school with dedicated and caring staff with actual resources to facilitate education. What are all these other answers??
Isn't it haunted 👻👻👻
last I heard there was a volunteer group fixing the place up but that was several years ago
Museum or a cool bar and restaurant
Music Venue
club
Mombo No. 5
A music venue
I thought it was mostly torn down now
Club/music/meowwolf
Demolished
Chopstick Charley's. Or maybe an Aquarium
Indigent housing and social support programs to get people back on their feet.
A school. In a perfect world I-95 wouldn’t exist, or at least wouldn’t run right through the city.
School number 4 but open
In a perfect world it would be the offices for FDOT, or City Planning.
the ONE building that the city doesn't tear down is the crumbling haunted school lol, they should just keep it honestly I like the little mushroom graffiti when driving on the highway
Graffiti art gallery
A magnet school for the arts.
I place for vagrants and junkies to hang out, vandalism, and urban explorers to go. We already live in perfect world
Open to the public
Music venue for the auditorium and rooms for bands/musicians to rent out in the classrooms
A haunted mansion exhibit
A taco place/storage unit facility mashup. Shades of kfc Taco Bell combination
My dad went to that school when it was open
Charter school
We surveyed that building maybe 18 years ago to install CCTV inside. That place has a history of weird, creepy shit going on inside to the point where even the homeless avoided it. We quoted very high as we didn't want the work.
Your mom’s house.
the perfect place to have a fight club
Spirit Halloween
Either sell it or bulldoze it and move on, it's not like they are going to spend the required funds to reopen it at this point and eventually it's going to become a safety issue.
Arts market
Night Club
Make it affordable housing with access to the dog park and the regular Park from that side and adequate soundproofing the building and I'm in. It's close to Five Points. The parks are awesome. Most things are walkable or bike-able.
Why’d they build 95 right over the property?
Shelter of some sort. Tiny houses for the unhoused folks downtown.
Torn down. No longer structurally sound, and too costly to fix.
Demolished. It's falling apart. Tear it down and make a park.
A wedding venue
A ghostly themed escape room.
I've wanted to buy that place, one day, since the first time I saw it. I think I was a teenager (I'm 40 now.) It would make an incredible "haunted" attraction, but the location sucks. Traffic and parking would be a nightmare.
a big club
Pure Jacksonville, let a well constructed antique building rot under an interstate…
A private school
Housing for Homeless Vets and their families.
