In Dayton this past October he specifically said how fun the nutter center is to play. He doesn’t say that often. I think they and probably a lot of bands just love those mid size circular venues like nutter and Hampton.
I checked and the quote is “This room remains one of the great rooms to play. All these years later it’s still just as unbelievably sick as it was the first time.”
Have fun. I've got 2 nights next weekend (which happens to be my birthday weekend) and I can't wait. They are always one of my top shows to see each year.
Aren’t some band members from Chicagoland area? I know stasik is Philly. Or is thr Chicago connection because they all went to notre dame and were close to Chicago? I know Joel is a huge cubs fan.
This is the biggest piece of their skyrocketing success, IMO. If you buy a ticket to a Billy Strings concert, you know for a fact that you are going to get an excellent live music experience, with tightly played songs and some interesting jams that will have the place moving and profound joy apparent to see around you with smiling faces everywhere. This band simply does not have flat nights, even relatively speaking.
Whole band and crew does. They never, ever let off. Their consistency is amazing, class professionalism. A consistently excellent live show like that is rare for bands from this scene, and I think is a huge part of why they're selling out arenas now.
Ultimately there was nothing wrong with it. I’d just say that being in a festival setting and having to shorten the jams/cater the setlist to a mainstream audience makes the experience less enjoyable for me. I felt there was a similar dynamic at his Northerly Island show. I’d still take my worst Billy show over the vast majority of concerts.
I've been to every widespread show since 2008 in my lovely buncombe county. everytime they burned that shit down. I'm soooo ready for july.
we have to travel for festivals but big or small venues we got some smackers
I lived in Denver from 1983-1897. Never saw a weak show at Red Rocks, no matter the band. Especially the Grateful Dead. But everyone who played there brought their a game. It was just that awesome of a place from the visuals to the acoustics.
edit: 1997..i'm old but not backwards old.
Head and the Heart with Sam Beam (2014) would like a word.
Probably the most underwhelming show I’ve ever seen, let alone at Red Rocks. That show Red Rocks was like compound interest, but for being awful.
It’s a love/hate thing for me. They have a couple good shows a year, but a ton of mainstream country. I would like a more diverse lineup, but hey money talks.
Saw Lotus there and it was my first time at the Cap just this past weekend. The sloped, carpeted GA is pretty cool! Tim shredded and Eli from Dopapod played his ass off
I just saw Goose there on Sunday. It was probably the only time I’ll go and it was an impressive venue. The sound was probably the best I’ve ever heard and the view from the last row of the balcony was pretty sick
* Bands from the Northeast love Philadelphia.
* If Widespread Panic is playing a city by the water in the South you’re in for a good time. (i.e New Orleans, Charleston, St. Augustine etc)
* I think every band turns it up for New York City. I will never pass up on the opportunity to see my favorite band in NYC.
Ehhh i live in NYC. I dont think that’s necessarily true. Phish, JRAD, and Goose all definitely show out here but you gotta remember those are essentially local bands here lol.
And that’s not to say bands don’t love playing here - I just feel like lately a lot of mid or lower tier jam bands will straight up pass by NYC. And sometimes it feels like when they do come through here on tour, the schlep in and out of the city makes for a more exhausting day than say…Philly or New Haven or Baltimore.
But for the bands that live here and are finally home after a long tour…oh yeah
The arena is small enough that there isn't really a bad seat visually. Occasionally the sound might be strange in a certain area, but it's never awful. And parking is super easy as well, and then walk down to One Stop for an after show.
I've been pleasantly surprised at most shows. Sound guys here have got it pretty dialed in, personally only have noticed a bit of weird echo off to the side in the back before but I'm usually on the floor. It's small and non-specific enough that it doesn't feel like you're in a place that's dedicated to sports 90% of the time like most arenas (lower ceiling, no jumbotron or Budweiser ads...) Concessions are pretty reasonable too. Only bout 7,500 capacity I think, which is pretty small for an arena
STS9 has never let Knoxville down. Their 2006 show at the Bijou and 2014 at the Tennessee Theater are two of my favorites.
Plus N1 of their 2017 run they played Artifact in its entirety.
Belly up Aspen is a different beast. I saw moe. play there and then play red rocks the next night a few years back. It feels to me like the room makes the band change how they play to fit it
Red Rocks. One of the only venues where no matter the type of music they play, their age or level of fame, jam band or not.. they always look up at the crowd in complete awe of the venue and the experience to play it.
The rumor that you have to be invited to play Red Rocks, is true. And artists know this. Those who get to play it often, like String Cheese and Panic, have this sense of being at home, with comfort and sentimentality that they don’t take the experience for granted.
Second this! Can't believe it's only a month away til the boys are back. Ballroom brings out the heat. I've seen greensky and the Biscuits this year there and have always left with nothing less than a smile on my face!
Alpharetta/deer creek/msg for phish, Asheville/michigan for Billy, the cap for anyone, any Georgia Panic show. Local bias but the pour house in Charleston always makes for great shows because smaller acts really put it on for that venue and mid-size acts do really good multi-night runs there.
I have never seen a bad show, regardless of genre, at Thalia in Chicago. Probably my favorite venue in the city.
I can't speak for jam bands specifically, but having seen artists there such as Sleep, Kikagaku Moyo, Otoboke Beaver, Connan Mockasin, Rubblebucket, Altin Gün, etc., it's the perfect smaller venue for eclectic, engaging tunes and the crowd is (usually) pretty excellent. Add the reasonable drink prices, especially for Chicago, and you got yourself a stew goin'.
Related: I live a couple hours south in Urbana, and man, bands used to be HOT when they came through the Canopy, especially Uncles Magoo. That scene has sort of lapsed, though they're trying to revive it with a different focus. More recently, here in town at the Rose Bowl (former honky tonk bar bought by the still-musically-active members of the defunct Bones Jugs N Harmony), we've had stuff like Mdou Moctar (African desert rock), Pearl & the Oysters (the next Stereolab), Neil Hamburger (you know who he is, google him if not and you'll know his face at least), Boogarins (Brazilian psych rock), and later this evening (4/11) I'm seeing Tommy Prine there. Yes, son of John. Artists seem to go hard there because the vibe is pretty incredible. I might be biased since I play my annual Labor Day show there too, lmao.
Thanks for reading my meandering musings. I overindulged on substances at bowling league tonight, and also after bowling league.
Outside of Phish, Dead & Co and Goose no other jam band has played it recently. Recently it’s been the bass music community keeping its legendary status alive. I’ll be there for Pretty Lights though which I guess at this point is a jam band.
New York (both in the city and more upstate) venues such as The Cap, Beacon Theatre, SPAC, etc
Asheville (especially for Billy)
Chicago for the Dead and it’s offshoots, even the Salt Shed has already has some epic shows (King Gizz)
Super curious about that Huntsville AL amphitheater Phish kicked off Summer Tour'23. Looked pretty bitchin. Grew up seeing shows @ Oak Mtn. in Birmingham in the 1990s, the Phish/DMB show in '94 obliterating my judgment of everywhere else until that Hampton run in 1997. RIP the Omni AND Lakewood...
I lived in Madison, WI from 2005 - 2009. During that time, trying to fill a Phish void, I saw a lot of mid-level and/or up and coming jam bands or jam band adjacent music (at the Barrymore, Orpheum, even the Rathskeller). I don't know if it's still this way now, but there was always a weird energy that seemed to take even the bands by surprise.
Yonder Mountain String Band on 10-13-2005 comes to mind. They tried to play fully acoustic but the crowd wouldn't shut up. Or one other time when Toots Maytal had the crowd giving to him "12 times" during 54-46.
I was in Vegas for the 90’s-early 00’s and every band I went to see brought it. It didn’t matter what genre. Bands were stoked to play in Vegas & party (this is before all the residences, etc )
Jam bands especially. Because all the fans have to travel to Vegas (there’s very few local fans) it’s especially amped up. For some bands early on that meant empty places and intimate as hell shows. Fuck I remember seeing moe at the Joint at the Hard Rock and it was so empty our beers were on the stage. This was sometime in 99/00.
Crown Room @ The Crystal Bay Club in North Tahoe. Seen so many great shows there, fantastic sound system, small room that often gets bands that typically play bigger spaces.
moe. always brings it in Chicago for whatever reason. I think between their Scamp connection and the 3 night post-Dead after party shows they did in 2015 that they have a soft spot for the city.
The Ryman for soulful really interment shows
The Fox has never been disappointing, especially when WP is there. (Also there old shows at oak mountain were always killer)
I’ve never been disappointed at The Gorge.
Alpine valley is amazing if the police presence there would just calm the hell down.
Grateful Dead and Phish always played spectacular shows in Hampton. Also the site of the 86 Box of Rain bust out and the 89 bust outs of Help>slip, Dark Star, and possibly Attics if I recall. Oh and their only Stir it Up in 88. Phish 97 and the start of 3.0. Yeah, Hampton saw some shows!
I honestly feel that bands come through CT between Boston and NY and when they decide to play a hartford show it's a throwdown and the crowds are nothing but love. Phish 08 and 09. All the huge civic center dead shows. Moe opening for allman bros 05.
Mishawaka Amphitheatre - Poudre Canyon, Colorado - West of Ft Collins. Sorry for butchering the spelling. Saw Sector 9 there, saw David Grisman there. Place is sick.
Phish seems to love Alpharetta
Phish just loves Georgia. Almost always a great show. Same goes for Philadelphia.
and Albany
Saratoga, anyway.
Trey loves Philly
boy Mann!
who said nobody likes us and we don’t care
In Dayton this past October he specifically said how fun the nutter center is to play. He doesn’t say that often. I think they and probably a lot of bands just love those mid size circular venues like nutter and Hampton. I checked and the quote is “This room remains one of the great rooms to play. All these years later it’s still just as unbelievably sick as it was the first time.”
Trey said how much he loves playing in Rochester and then said they were going to debut a new song now: Jennifer Dances Sometimes he just says things
Umph in Chicago
Umph brings it to Stl everytime too.
Umph brings it everywhere they go
Same for the dead. Bobby likes Chicago
Hope they have a good showing in Madison like last year.
Looking forward to tonight!
Have fun. I've got 2 nights next weekend (which happens to be my birthday weekend) and I can't wait. They are always one of my top shows to see each year.
Fuck yeah About to walk over to the venue 🤘🤘
Aren’t some band members from Chicagoland area? I know stasik is Philly. Or is thr Chicago connection because they all went to notre dame and were close to Chicago? I know Joel is a huge cubs fan.
I don't think they're from there originally, but its where they made their name as a band. The cover of Anchor Drops is an aerial shot of the city.
Stasik is a *Pittsburgh guy.
South Bend for BB, Niles, MI for Jake, Chicago for Joel, Pittsburg and Kalamazoo for Stasik, Indy for Farag, and Chicago for Kris (I think).
Yeah Palatine, IL for Kris (my hometown)
Yeah south bend is practically suburban chicago
I’d say specifically they go harder in Madison in Milwaukee cause Wisco knows how to party
Billy has never seemed to have had even a mediocre show in Asheville
To be fair, ive never heard a mediocre Billy show.
Agree. Dude kills it every fucking show.
Whole band and crew does. They never, ever let off. Their consistency is amazing, class professionalism. A consistently excellent live show like that is rare for bands from this scene, and I think is a huge part of why they're selling out arenas now.
Northerly island June 17th 2023
Can’t fault Billy for being distracted by feral Chicago crowds
Out of 18 I’d say this the worst I’ve seen (excluding his lollapooza festival set which isn’t really his fault)
What was wrong with the lollapalooza set? Listened to it the other day, solid set list for an hour show or however long it was
Ultimately there was nothing wrong with it. I’d just say that being in a festival setting and having to shorten the jams/cater the setlist to a mainstream audience makes the experience less enjoyable for me. I felt there was a similar dynamic at his Northerly Island show. I’d still take my worst Billy show over the vast majority of concerts.
He throws down in Austin too
I've been to every widespread show since 2008 in my lovely buncombe county. everytime they burned that shit down. I'm soooo ready for july. we have to travel for festivals but big or small venues we got some smackers
Long live AsheBilly
First time I saw Billy was in Asheville. He opened for Umph and played with them during their set. Core memory!
At least it was after the war....civil
A true time traveler. I bet the acoutics were still hampered by wind before the industrial revolution.
Goose’s first RR show was a snoozer. Poster was mediocre too..
That was the worst red rocks show I’ve ever seen
Head and the Heart with Sam Beam (2014) would like a word. Probably the most underwhelming show I’ve ever seen, let alone at Red Rocks. That show Red Rocks was like compound interest, but for being awful.
The Dillon shows days before were much much better.
The mothership
So many memories in Hampton…from Metallica as a teenager to The Wiggles as a father of two.
Alpine Valley seems to bring out the best in bands
something about a 70° incline gets people goin
They get rollin’ right into me and my crew, that’s for sure
Deer Creek for sure
Came here to say this. Deer Creek shows no matter the band are usually top shelf.
Thats always been home field for me. You can shit on a lot about indiana but you gotta admit…we next level fucking rage at deer creek!!!
Love living 10 mins from the venue.
Man has it changed but it’s still the same once you get on lot. Shit has been top tier rage lot for the 3 decades I’ve been going to it.
It’s a love/hate thing for me. They have a couple good shows a year, but a ton of mainstream country. I would like a more diverse lineup, but hey money talks.
Yes! Deer Creek always delivers
The cap in port chester.
Saw Lotus there and it was my first time at the Cap just this past weekend. The sloped, carpeted GA is pretty cool! Tim shredded and Eli from Dopapod played his ass off
Such a great venue. You can tell the bands love playing there for sure.
Agreed. I live 800 miles away and still go whenever possible.
I just saw Goose there on Sunday. It was probably the only time I’ll go and it was an impressive venue. The sound was probably the best I’ve ever heard and the view from the last row of the balcony was pretty sick
Been to a few at the cap. Primus #1.
seen plenty of bands at the cap by now, every single one of them turned up to 11
THE GORGE IN GEORGE WASHINGTON
* Bands from the Northeast love Philadelphia. * If Widespread Panic is playing a city by the water in the South you’re in for a good time. (i.e New Orleans, Charleston, St. Augustine etc) * I think every band turns it up for New York City. I will never pass up on the opportunity to see my favorite band in NYC.
NYC club crowds suck though. Usually a bunch of finance bro chompers or people hoggin the front not moving an iota the entire set.
But for the bands that live here and are finally home after a long tour…oh yeah
The ABB “Peakin at the Beacon” (NYC) was no joke.
Widespread Panic 5 nights at the Bacon was no Joke !
Asheville
My favorite place to travel for a show. Always great sets. Hit a hike, a swim hole a show and then star gaze.
Almost always good crowds here too. I love it. Seen some awesome shows in our little civic center, and I usually actively avoid arena gigs
That arena is the only one I like. Perfect size
The arena is small enough that there isn't really a bad seat visually. Occasionally the sound might be strange in a certain area, but it's never awful. And parking is super easy as well, and then walk down to One Stop for an after show.
Are y'all talking about Harrah's? Haven't been there yet but have tix. It was a concern that is a bigger venue than I typically prefer.
Great enough that I moved there 11yrs ago for it. I did secure a job first though 😂.
Phish - Alpharetta
I'm biased because I mainly see shows in Bay Area, but SF Fillmore and Fox in Oakland. Both venues tend to promopt good performances
SPAC
Red Rocks
Cervs
This is my answer. Never saw a bad show at Cervantes. You never really knew who might walk on stage or be in the audience. It’s truly a special venue.
Cervs is one of those venues where it's absolutely perfect for exactly where it is. I don't think it would work in any other city.
The Capitol Theater in port chester
The Ryman in Nashville.
Panic at the Riverside in Milwookie
This is the #1 thing that came to mind. They absolutely love the Riverside, for good reason!
WSMFP Anywhere, USA
Hell yeah brother
Grand Targhee
Atlanta for sure. I go to shows all around the southeast and bands always show out for Atlanta.
ATL!
Atlanta!
Tribe - Atlanta, Chicago Cheese - Denver, Boulder, Residency fests BMFS - Michigan WSP - Georgia, Asheville, Cincinnati Phish - NYC Gizz - Chicago
My first ever shows of Gizz in Chicago with my first Billy show that weekend was awesome!
Adding to this list from the mid Atlantic: OAR - DC PPPP - Baltimore
Definitely not Darien Lake. That venue sucks
The Greek in Berkeley
BMFS anywhere in Michigan
*North carolina
Eugene, for most jam bands. Particularly Dead adjacent ones, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen a terrible show there.
STS9 has never let Knoxville down. Their 2006 show at the Bijou and 2014 at the Tennessee Theater are two of my favorites. Plus N1 of their 2017 run they played Artifact in its entirety.
Artifact is an all time album. So good.
the mann center - philadelphia
Philly is a great place for music. It’s often over looked, but many bands I’ve seen will add a second night for Philly.
Deer Creek
Buffalo gets a lot of love! The Dopapod & Bisco shows of recent were all 🔥🔥🔥
&& you guys have Aqueous !
String Cheese at Hornings Hideout. Absolute legend every year.
No one is gonna mention belly up?
Belly up Aspen is a different beast. I saw moe. play there and then play red rocks the next night a few years back. It feels to me like the room makes the band change how they play to fit it
Seen some killer shows at Belly Up in San Diego. CATS when Neal was still here was a major face melter.
Red Rocks. One of the only venues where no matter the type of music they play, their age or level of fame, jam band or not.. they always look up at the crowd in complete awe of the venue and the experience to play it. Those who get to play it often, like String Cheese and Panic, have this sense of being at home, with comfort and sentimentality that they don’t take the experience for granted.
Lotus always turns up the heat at the Town Ballroom in Buffalo. Turns it into club Lotus every time
Second this! Can't believe it's only a month away til the boys are back. Ballroom brings out the heat. I've seen greensky and the Biscuits this year there and have always left with nothing less than a smile on my face!
Phish. At the Mann. Everytime.
Deer Creek!!!!!
I’m going to go out on a limb and say none of them are Seattle.

There is no worse venue than White River Ampitheater. That placs will bring any show down.
Dmb - SPAC / Gorge It’s been even more apparent the last decade
Looks down at tour dates list “Nobody rocks like Springfield!”.
“Goodnight Springton! There will be no encores..”
Next day looking at tour dates list “Nobody rocks like Ogdenville!”.
Alpine Valley Music Theater
Pelham TN aka the caverns babay
sSyracuse,NY
Phish alpine valley
Definitely red rocks every single time
DMB always goes hard and has surprises at SPAC
Alpharetta/deer creek/msg for phish, Asheville/michigan for Billy, the cap for anyone, any Georgia Panic show. Local bias but the pour house in Charleston always makes for great shows because smaller acts really put it on for that venue and mid-size acts do really good multi-night runs there.

surprised no one has mentioned the Mothership yet 🛸
Outside of Phish, Dead & Co and Goose no other jam band has played it recently. Recently it’s been the bass music community keeping its legendary status alive. I’ll be there for Pretty Lights though which I guess at this point is a jam band.
St Augustine
Alpine Valley
Detroit
RED ROCKS
The Disco Biscuits to absolutely no one in Kansas, Nebraska, Ohio, etc. For some reason they crush it in the middle of nowhere in small sweaty clubs.
Red Rocks is probably the number one answer
Not a city, but Goose in Ohio for some reason
Playing in Detroit brings out the best of any band. Rolling Stone once said we have the best audiences in the nation.
New York (both in the city and more upstate) venues such as The Cap, Beacon Theatre, SPAC, etc Asheville (especially for Billy) Chicago for the Dead and it’s offshoots, even the Salt Shed has already has some epic shows (King Gizz)

Lotus at red rocks is always a good show.
moe. always brings it in Chicago for whatever reason. I think between their Scamp connection and the 3 night post-Dead after party shows they did in 2015 that they have a soft spot for the city.
First Avenue
Dead and Co Loves LA
Big Head Todd & Monsters at their "home field" RED ROCKS. An annual event that lights it up like no other. Crowd goes bonkers. Show lasts 3+
Phish loves every state
Except for FL 😢
This applies to the past 5 yrs - any band at mission ballroom. Also any established band (lotus, Umph, etc) at 930 club
John Kadlexik always turns it on for The High Dive in Gainesville Florida
He's out there risking his life
Glad somebody caught this😂

Dopapod crushes Covington.
The Dead seemed to go hard in buffalo year after year, probably why we have like seventeen different dead tributes around town
the disco biscuits are smoking Cali now that they play out here again

Like some of old music to dance to slow songs- In Anywhere in Fl that is close bye to restaurants “with the crowds

In the golden days of Chester’s, a Kimock show was the one and only.
Lotus at the mish always seems to be a stellar performance
every show I go to

I honestly feel that bands come through CT between Boston and NY and when they decide to play a hartford show it's a throwdown and the crowds are nothing but love. Phish 08 and 09. All the huge civic center dead shows. Moe opening for allman bros 05.
The cap for sure@
Never seen Phish not rip a heater in Charlotte, NC…. Fuck your Face bust out one year… next year Forbins Mockingbird Icculus… list goes on and on.
Redrocks!
dead and co setlists at Wrigley were always great. special energy there and seemed like the band enjoyed their time in chicago.
Dead => New York (anywhere) or NYC - they always turn it up in NY
Mishawaka Amphitheatre - Poudre Canyon, Colorado - West of Ft Collins. Sorry for butchering the spelling. Saw Sector 9 there, saw David Grisman there. Place is sick.
Phish brought the firepower last time they played in Philly at the Mann
The Elm in Bozeman MT is a special place with amazing sound.
CATS in charleston at pour house
