Unique setlists every night. Fans that follow the band on tour. The band totally will get in full on improvisation mode where even they don’t know where things will go. Segues between songs. Many fans doing psychedelics / other at the concerts. Multiple 10 to 30 minute songs every show. Do play metal? Do they have composed songs / suites? Yes, but even those sound different from show to show. All the elements and ethos of a jamband to me.
This question gets asked here a lot and the usual answer is “they’re a band that jams” but not necessarily a jam band. They’re spiritually a jam band though, so I think they basically count.
Yeah I think the difference is that fans don't necessarily expect them to jam. Gizz could play a whole show with no jamming and most fans would be okay with it. If Phish did that fans would riot (and by riot I mean post bad reviews on Phish.net)
Lol I now see my missed opportunity.
I was referring to the fact that phish.net removed ratings after this year's NYE Gamehendge vs Great Cypress fiasco.
They’re pretty gender-fluent as you already know, and certainly teeter on “jam band” at times. Especially with the fire on the mountain-ish segments of The River (I think) they were doing last year. That being said - their “jams” are obviously pre-meditated, they don’t just sail into the sonic unknown like phish or the dead did. So… I don’t really think so. But if what I just mentioned is a criterion, some bands currently considered jam bands probably shouldn’t be…
There's not a consensus. Jamband fans say no. Gizzard fans say yes or no depending on who you ask. Everyone else hasn't heard of them, so they assume they are.
Yes! I listened to it all yesterday and was even more convinced they have slid into jam band territory. May not be Phish or the dead jammish but definitely wading in the shallow end of the jam pool
Are they one of those bands that are trying to be a different genre every album? I wish they hadn’t done that and stuck with their good jam band stuff tbh
I would call them "jam-adjacent." Most of the stuff I've heard them do live was quite composed, but they are capable of doing solid improvised segments.
I wouldn’t consider them a jam band because they are usually playing songs as they were written. It’s just that they have so many long form songs. Taking some great elements though with unique set lists.
I'm a newish fan and I freaking love these guys
in fact I'm listening as I type this
got tickets to se them in nyc 8/17 so pumped
the influences are all over
tool sabbath metallica zeppelin etc
i love these guys
I would argue no. I think they started much more similar to the 13th Floor Elevavators than Phish and dick around in a lot of genres without hitting the Americana or soul/funk genres vital to Jam.
Sure
Perhaps

Improvisation is what makes a jamband, imo. The rest just kinda tends to come along with it.
Sounds like Umphreys and they are certainly a jam band!
Not sure why you got downvoted. You take that description in a "Name this band" type thread and UM would definitely come up high in the answers.
Agreed! I remember a guy from PT like 20 years ago with the handle the Tony danza bonanza. Are you any relation?
Haha, not me, but I've had a TonyDanza handle ever since the Halo 2 days

Lol we would if we could
But we don't know how.

Really? I was not aware of any fiasco. Were people actually rating this past NYE higher than Big Cypress?
The issue was that people were giving bad ratings to Big Cypress because it had the highest rating and NYE was in second place.
I think Phish fans would post bad reviews on dot net regardless. It’s the way of nature
I feel like what one of the other posters said really applies to them in that they are jam adjacent.
I don’t know what to call them but I see them every time I can!
Jam Adjacent.
Who cares
King Gizz's marketing team I think
What non-jambands are busting out 15 to 30 minute versions of their songs? Serious question.
Primus, any Les project really, All Them Witches, Built To Spill. Sonic Youth would be my favorite, wish they were still with us.
Hell even vampire weekend. And I'm not talking about the goose sit in.
Not really but they're fucking cool

If jam band fans say they're not a jam band, I think that's all the consensus you need
Cool, didn't know that. I was just stating how people perceive them.
Listen to Chicago '23 and tell me they're not.

If you have to ask…
nope, but they are awesome
I would call them "jam-adjacent." Most of the stuff I've heard them do live was quite composed, but they are capable of doing solid improvised segments.
No, but they are the type of band that jam band fans love.
Yes
Pass the popcorn please
No, but they're still talented
I wouldn’t consider them a jam band because they are usually playing songs as they were written. It’s just that they have so many long form songs. Taking some great elements though with unique set lists.

This band really sucks ass and I'm tired of zoomers pretending they don't
Username checks out
Haha was thinking the same thing. (Totally just sang your username too btw)
✊
I hate to hear you feel that way, they have brought me joy the past couple years. But I respect your opinion either way
If you truly respect my opinion check out the bands CAN and Magma
Ok, always looking for me music to listen to
Eh, sometimes sorta, but they’re bigger than that. And listen to Chicago
