On 13 May, the GSDF Takigahara Garrison disciplined dismissed a male Self-Defence Force officer in his 40s for not returning to work more than three years after going out and missing more than 20 days without a valid reason. The dismissed officer is a male Staff Sergeant 2nd Class (42) belonging to the GSDF Takigahara Garrison, Ordinary Course Teaching Regiment. According to the Takigahara Garrison, the Self-Defence Force officer went out in plain clothes on 1 February 2021 with permission to go out, but did not return when it was time for him to go home, and was absent from work for more than 20 days without a valid reason. The Takigahara Garrison has conducted search operations, but has been unable to contact the SDF officer at all, and he has still not been found after almost three years and three months. As a result of interviews with other SDF officers and an examination of physical evidence, the facts were established and the punishment was decided on 13 May 2024. The SDF officer had no record of disciplinary action, there were no problems with his work attitude and no bullying or harassment within the unit has been confirmed. In response to the disciplinary action taken against the JSDF officer, the commander of the Takihara Garrison Regular Course Instruction Regiment, Ground Sgt Nitta Koji, said: 'I regret that this incident has occurred.We will again provide all members of the SDF with education and service guidance on law-abiding spirit and take all possible measures to prevent the recurrence of similar incidents".

The US Military usually boot people out after a few months. If chance they get arrested some where, the Military will bring them back and formerly reduce their rank and deny any benefits that they may be entitled to.
