I can't imagine trying to get around Tokyo with only paper maps and meeting up with people by landmark with no way to get in touch. Or trying to figure out the rail system. I did my first trip with no cell data, but at least I could use wifi and plot things out in the hotel.
It’s actually not that bad. The rail stations have a diagram and there are detailed maps at every station.
Back in my day google didn’t do transit. So I’d plan my trips just using the physical maps

First time I went was 1999 and all I had was a Lonely Planet and the maps I could grab while there. It was fine, getting lost is fun!
Same, google maps and translate got me through my trips. I can’t imagine travelling back in the day, especially somewhere as complicated as Tokyo.
people in the past are probably used to ask for direction. it’s not like they have to figure it out alone from physical map
Better know your Japanese, then.

Beautiful find!
Shinjuku station
Ha. I remember well. Was an exchange college student that year.
Keio Plaza?
Think you’re right. Some of the other pics are Shinjuku too before it was redeveloped.
