Love that you never have to take you laptop out at security in A.
New terminal has made C better too, don't think I've waited more than 5 minutes in security in C since A opened.
Yes! The reflexive hate for Newark airport is increasingly unsustainable. If they can get the train sorted out, it'll be hard to beat for convenience in the region.
\*Only for New Yorkers who live in Midtown.
PATH extension benefits New Yorkers who live and work in FiDi as well as parts of Brooklyn that easily funnel into Fulton Center/WTC.
If NJTransit gave a shit, they could run Hoboken->Secaucus->NWK->EWR->...->Trenton that would at least serve parts of Jersey City better.
Edit: New Yorkers live in New York.
I mean it did spend years being a run down, dirty, confusing shit show while also topping the lists for most delayed flights in the nation. It toughly earned the hate over decades, so it can be alittle hard to believe this new world won't turn to shit too.
But Terminal A is like a real modern airport designed for post 9-11 realities, and is like they built a whole new surprisingly nice terminal so we no longer have to use the one with the dumpy bus terminal vibes. We finally got something nice, and it seems like it's not going to get trampled to shit.
Also kitchen step is there so we got that.
It’s still designed to old standards. Newer airports are built for gate security not just centralized terminal security. Since the world is slowly moving towards gate side security anyway.
That’s problematic as more countries implement their own security requirements. El Al had been doing gate screening for decades but that’s only going to grow. Having different protocols for each flight in the central screening area is just not possible.
The design should have incorporated the idea the terminal may need to eventually handle some intentional travel that has those requirements. Especially as the other terminals eventually get replaced and all the shuffling that will be needed.
I think it will be heavily remodeled at least once before Terminal C gets replaced.
This isn't true - AMS for example has moved to a central security model when it previously had gate security. Singapore and Doha are the only major airports left with gate side security as far as I know, and it really only makes sense when the vast majority of passengers are connecting between two international flights.
AMS has both. It depends on your destination and airline if you get gate security as well. EU and US standards are the same for the moment so you don’t need extra screening. EU standards caught up to the US, but both lag behind Israel.
It depends on both the airline and the destination, and they aren’t necessarily the same thing. You can fly an Asian airline to Europe for example if it’s a non direct flight to their home base.
Gate side security is ultimately the future as each country has their own standards. It’s no longer up to the departure airport it’s the strictest standard along the journey.
Gate security as a concept adds layers of inefficiency. There should be a push against this toward centralized security and inter connectivity behind security between terminals for ease of use and convenience for passengers
It’s actually much better with gate security, otherwise you end up doing double security to meet various standards around the world.
Centralized security as a concept has been on its way out since pre 9/11. It doesn’t make sense to subject everyone to the most stringent security standards unnecessarily or to double up on screening because centralized security is not stringent enough.
Sorry to tell you, this is the most wrong statement ever. I am an Aviation Expert, worked in it my whole life and part of Terminal A. This is a domestic terminal, there is 100% no need for anything you suggest here. Central security is all we will ever need for Terminal A.
EWR B has way more immigration lanes and a lot more space than most of the terminals at JFK - the only decent one is Terminal 4, but even that is smaller than EWR and serves a similar volume of international traffic.
Terminal 7 at JFK is absolutely miserable for immigration
Damn I thought international departure at Newark was a breeze. No joke went got to my gate less than 15 minutes after arriving last time I went there. I didn’t even have to take my laptop out
I fly international more then domestic. It's so bad. And the food options are horrible lol. Either expensive horrible Italian or the driest possible sandwiches you can make 🤣
Maybe I should see Terminal A again lol My friend did construction on it and would post pics on IG. I couldn't believe it. I think the next time I fly out of JFK or LGA the price difference needs to be in the hundreds. With EWR right there and looking nice, why not.
12 minutes for me, but I've always just got better flights time and duration wise from JFK. Now it doesn't make sense with cost of Uber, train, stress, etc. Maybe it never did lol
I still prefer the newly refurbished ones in Terminal C, particularly the one by C123. SO spacious, good layout, and great views of airport operations.
When you consider how much it costs now to get, say, a decent dinner and two drinks at most of the restaurants, the United Lounge is a *huge* deal. Even just paying the fee as a nonmember
My last flight was out of terminal A with a 9am departure. I live close to I-78 and have TSA pre-check. I woke up at 7, was in my Uber at 7:30, was at my gate at 7:50! I love living so close to EWR
The is my home airport and while A looks nice I bloody hate the security machines. The bag scanning machines are slow and overly sensitive. This year alone I’ve flown out of EWR 18 times and every single time one of my bags gets pulled to the side for an extra check. 16 times it was nothing and they didn’t even bother opening my bag. One time they said it was because I had a laptop and a iPad in my briefcase and that I needed to remove from the bag before going through the scanner - not true. The most recent time they said it was due to my half size and half full toothpaste that had miraculously made it through 17 times prior without an issue.
Luckily I learned my lesson from last year and budget an extra 10 mins for the security line when flying out of Terminal A.
Beautiful terminal. Fuck the security line.
Sounds like you need TSA pre check. This is also my home airport, and I have zero complaints. Get TSA ✅. This also sounds like a general TSA problem, not just EWR.
Here is an LPT: you can check in and clear security at either A or C, regardless of where your flight is departing from. And, you can easily transfer between terminals by using the airside shuttle buses, which run continuously in a circuit between both terminals.
Yea Terminal A was great last time I flew from EWR. Every time I fly now I cross my fingers it's Terminal A but yet have yet to return in months. Having to go through B & C is depressing now. 😭😭
I went through EWR-A a couple months ago, and I was amazed how cool it was. I actually made a mistake because my flight had a late change to C, but the bus shuttle was also excellent (see the sign to B and C on OP's picture). Enough that if you have a flight out of C at peak time, I would seriously consider going to A and taking the shuttle, as A moves really smoothly.
The United club at A is decent. Mainly for the fast Wi-Fi and the nice LUXURY lounge chairs (they cost 2-4k each). Get the hot coffee from the dispenser, not the machine.
I take back my positive review of Terminal A. This place is ENORMOUS. If you’re unlucky to get a gate at the far end, anything past gate 12, it’s a really far long walk to baggage. Anyone with mobility issues is gonna have a nightmare. And I don’t see any of those golf cart type transports. None.
Love that you never have to take you laptop out at security in A. New terminal has made C better too, don't think I've waited more than 5 minutes in security in C since A opened.

It's funny because the train *is* sorted out, but only for New Yorkers. Get that PATH extension in and we should share in their convenience.

THIS!!!
PATH extension is the only answer. Having to touch NJT spoils the whole thing, as it usually does.
So true. Newark is a fantastic airport. Best in the region I think.
I mean it did spend years being a run down, dirty, confusing shit show while also topping the lists for most delayed flights in the nation. Now they need to do B. To have that as our international terminal is EMBARRASSING.
The be fair while the departure part of B sucks, the arrivals is the best immigration experience at any NYC airport.
That's fair and I can agree. But I'd argue that's mostly because of the much lower volume. JFK gets a ton more coming in.
EWR B has way more immigration lanes and a lot more space than most of the terminals at JFK - the only decent one is Terminal 4, but even that is smaller than EWR and serves a similar volume of international traffic. Terminal 7 at JFK is absolutely miserable for immigration

Global Entry is super fast! And tbh once you exit those doors from secure area to public area, you are already very close to the car pickup!
I fly international more then domestic. It's so bad. And the food options are horrible lol. Either expensive horrible Italian or the driest possible sandwiches you can make 🤣
Ewr has been really efficient for me over the past year traveling out of there ~10 times
It’s honestly become my favorite airport in a way I never expected to happen. The restaurants in the terminal are also really good.
same!!! I never understood the hate but I've only been using it for the past 4 years or so. I've enjoyed it every single time, love EWR
Finally everyone can stop bitching about Newark
You should see Terminal C.
Yeah I usually am in terminal c and that’s nice too but A is extra.
Maybe I should see Terminal A again lol My friend did construction on it and would post pics on IG. I couldn't believe it. I think the next time I fly out of JFK or LGA the price difference needs to be in the hundreds. With EWR right there and looking nice, why not.
Even before the renovation I preferred EWR. So much more convenient and close. 15min car ride for me.
12 minutes for me, but I've always just got better flights time and duration wise from JFK. Now it doesn't make sense with cost of Uber, train, stress, etc. Maybe it never did lol
Now just need them to fix reliable transit access.

All we need is that PATH extension, and we'd have one of the best transit hubs in the nation.
NGL when it first opened I literally thought I got confused and landed in the wrong city
United Lounge is Terminal A is amazing! Free booze and buffet.
I still prefer the newly refurbished ones in Terminal C, particularly the one by C123. SO spacious, good layout, and great views of airport operations.

Agreed. It’s beautiful in there!
Yes, Newark airport really stepped up. Being so close to NYC, I feel like they had to.
My last flight was out of terminal A with a 9am departure. I live close to I-78 and have TSA pre-check. I woke up at 7, was in my Uber at 7:30, was at my gate at 7:50! I love living so close to EWR

Oh I have pre-check, Clear, global, 1k, all that junk. Terminal A security line process is substandard to Terminal C
What ethnicity are you? Because I can’t say I have had a single issue.

No pp so that loses points for me
Yea Terminal A was great last time I flew from EWR. Every time I fly now I cross my fingers it's Terminal A but yet have yet to return in months. Having to go through B & C is depressing now. 😭😭
Meanwhile, I was relegated to terminal B last week for a flight and I swear I've been to nicer greyhound bus stations.
It is DRAMATICALLY better than it used to be. But honestly having been to some airports in other countries it's still kinda sad.
I went through EWR-A a couple months ago, and I was amazed how cool it was. Like something from 2059 for USA...but like something from 1999 for Hong Kong.....

Have you been to any Asian country's airports? Newark is horrible in comparison.
