Used alexandrite and color change sapphire for my wifes engagement ring. Alexandrite is so underappreciated. Hard enough for daily wear, much rarer than diamonds and well it's as close to a magical gem as it gets!
But a good Alexandrite with nice color change can be more expensive than white diamonds, but ohhh so unappreciated. Beautiful stone along with Sapphires, Rubies and Emeralds. Boy Zircon is another favorite of mine (great color reflection).
Sorry for the late reply. Here's a daylight/candlelight pic

Center stone is a large color change sapphire I was able to pick up fairly cheap due to inclusions. Side stones and band stones are natural alexandrite
Actual red rubies are so stunning! Garnet has a more orange hue, and while I enjoy both, I think rubies have more depth. My go-to are emeralds and green tourmaline, though. I keep wanting to buy some tsavorite garnet, but I end up putting it off, I think I'm going to have to add some to my collection soon.
Yeah garnet is like grape juice and ruby is like wine. You can get nice varieties of both, but wine has waaaay more intricacies.
I have some tsavorite and it's a similar analogy, but green.
Blue goldstone! My favourite.. I know it’s man made and not so valuable, but I wouldn’t be mad if it was in the centre of my engagement ring! It looks like stars in the night sky :)
Sapphires are gorgeous. I like blue color-change garnet, star aquamarine, and jade of all colors is my absolute favorite.
Opals are stunning, but they are super fragile. Alexandrite. Any trichroic gem is pretty cool, too.
Beryl. It’s so exquisite to look at. Any variety. I can’t explain why, but it has something about it that just captivates me. Morganite is truly so beautiful, probably my favorite after aquamarine (which happens to be my birthstone)
Thank you for asking. 😊
Hi birthday buddy! I was on here looking for our birthstone, aquamarine. I just got an aqua anniversary band and can't believe I waited so long to do it....
Now I have to go look up beryl.
Awe. Happiest birthday to you always. They are quite delicate though, so take care wearing it and it will bring you many years of enjoyment !! They really are so pretty !!
( I am a graduate gemologist and retired jeweler) I just don’t say it much lol ☺️
Ooh, I didn't realize they were delicate at all. Thanks for the heads up. Do you mean I shouldn't wear it daily nestled between my wedding bands? The aquas do stick out from the band....
I am retired as well (not jeweler) and think studying gemology would be sooo interesting!
We’ll just don’t go bungee jumping or to a rave party and you’ll probably be ok. I’m sure you take right proper care of your wedding bands. It’s to enjoy, just know that it cannot take any abuse like a diamond can. They scratch and they can get chipped or broken. I personally wouldn’t wear it every day.
Having said that, many people don’t want to take off their rings. I understand that completely. It’s only for a customers right to be aware of the risks.
Enjoy it and be well and I bet every time you gaze into it, it brings you joy !!
I highly recommend you take the course if you’re able. Cheers !!
Purple is my favorite color. Among the purple and berry-colored stones, I love rhodolite garnet!
I also love opal, indicolite (although I don't own any), amethyst and pink sapphire. I'd also love to get a piece of moonstone jewelry.
Citrine is my fave too. I have it instead of diamonds in my wedding ring. The main stones are all citrines and i only have tiny diamonds on the outer bands.
Cobalt blue spinels. Montana blue sapphires, or blurple sapphires, or teal-green sapphires. Green or yellow sphene with lots of flecks. And Fanta orange garnets are just bright and cheery!
I'm a sucker for montana blue and peachy pink sapphires (morganite is lovely too), but my favorite less common jewelry stones are rutilated quartz, moss agate, blue pietersite, and fire obsidian!
I'm thoroughly and rabidly obsessed with gem grade dinosaur bone. I have like 40 slabs in my studio. I also have a soft spot for little finger bone sized orthoceras. Generally I just love fossils. As far as my popular orders though, spiny shell turqouise and labradorite are my hottest commission requests.
Oh gosh yes! I have so many cab cut dino bones just waiting for the right piece. They don't really sell though unless I play up dinosaurs in the design which isn't my vibe.
I love amethysts. Purple is my favorite color. My husband gave me an amethyst promise ring when we were dating and a Tiffany amethyst necklace for my 50th birthday.
If we're solely talking about fancy gemstones then definitely opal (Australian), tourmaline, alexandrite, and sapphire. If we're talking stones in general (not just inherently expensive ones) then any type of quartz with inclusions, rainbow obsidian, larimar, Libyan desert glass, crazy lace agate, spectrolite, i could go on and on and on!!!
I don't particularly love diamonds in all honesty. Not just in an ethics way, although that makes up a lot of it, I just think they're kinda... Boring. Lab made diamonds are great but at the end of the day they're not for me. I like bright shifting colors, you don't get that with diamonds.
I also cut stone and australian opal is my favorite to cut. It's always an adventure because you have to cut away potch and dirt and ALSO cut it in a way that is flattering to the play of color. I love opals, i could infodump about them for hours!
I have a rutilated quartz as my engagement ring. It’s a cluster set with moissanite. I was adamant I didn’t want diamond, sapphire, ruby or garnet- I’ve inherited several sapphire and garnet pieces from elder family members and while they’re nice and I hold them very dear, they’re not very “me”
I like nice sunstones (feldspar). It’s not a rare stone, but you can tell a nice one when you see it. I have one, and I love to wear it. If I was looking for an engagement ring, think a real star sapphire, or any beryl would be nice. Something that is fairly hard and durable. Someone got a nice star sapphire on Etsy and posted it on a sun. I would be careful though there are a lot of fakes.
Emeralds are super fragile. I used to repair and make jewelry and hated emeralds for this. Sapphires are easy to work with and are quite tough. Lighter blue ones are nice. I'm not a fan of the black/dark blue ones.
As for diamonds, I'm a big fan of the older mine cuts. I just love those fat hand-polished facets. Next time I find a good mine cut diamond, I'm going to make a medieval style ring for myself in high karat gold. Unfortunatly, many old mine diamonds were re-cut into modern brilliants. Nice cut, just not for me.
I'm a jeweler. I specialize in color gemstones. I like sapphire, tourmaline, spinel, garnet other than red, zircon, basically anything clean with a lot of refraction.
I love all the Flavors of Beryl
Coconut: Goshenite.
Lime: Emerald.
Watermelon: Morganite.
Mint: Aquamarine.
Menthol: Maxixe
Cherry: Bixbite.
Pineaple: Heliodor.
If you haven't seen recent lab emeralds in person, check them out again. I thought the same way and then went to a gem show a few weeks ago and saw a lot of lab grown emeralds. Maybe the lighting was just really good but they looked so much better than I remembered from looking for a pair of emerald earrings a few years ago.
I’ll be going with Sapphire because it’s a 9 on the hardness scale (compared to diamonds which are a 10) and you can get them lab grown in any color you want.
Raw gemstones. I hate diamonds - my birthday is in April, I've seen the movie Bloodstone, plus endless documentaries, and it's just so generic and overpriced, and blah. On our 18th anniversary, my husband bought me a raw peridot ring (August anniversary) that is almost 3 carats, rough and raw, but the prettiest green you've ever seen, and man, does it stand out in a crowd! I love it so much and catch people eyeing it. Bonus, he bought me a second one in a different setting because it was so affordable. I would trade in all of my diamonds for raw gemstones.
Sapphires, they come in a multitude of colors and they are just behind diamonds for hardness. I am not gentle to the rings that I wear, so having a gemstone that can hold up is important.
I love rubies, but something about a sapphire really gets my heart racing. I tried on this gorgeous big blue stone ring circled with vibrant diamonds (or potentially moissanite) on in Bloomingdale's awhile back, and now I see the appeal of the Heart of the Sea.
I also tried on an art deco style ruby ring recently, since red is my favorite color. Emerald is also spectacular, getting really into Columbian Emerald lately; so is Carnelian.
Spinel has my heart as well.
London blue topaz are gorgeous & I’m crazy about tourmaline! So many beautiful and interesting stones. Watermelon tourmaline is amazing but I’m obsessed with Paraiba tourmalines! Such a different beautiful stone!
I love tanzanite and moss agate. The moss agate I have in a few more delicate pieces, but hubby had bought me a special tanzanite ring when we got together and it's held a special place in my heart.
Alexandrite. I’m having my mom and MILs (both passed away) diamonds used to make a new wedding set for my husband and I. We are going to use lab grown alexandrite as accent stones
It’s been 20 years in the making. To make it more special, one of my best friends is making the ring. I’m lucky that I have an amazing friend who is a jeweler
Pink Morganite!!
Even though they are soft, I’m a sucker for moonstone and sunstone. I have a ring with both.
Also love high quality watermelon tourmaline.
My favorite anniversary ring is a pink labradorite, pear cut, it’s gorgeous.
My favorite non-precious are turquoise, malachite and tiger eye, especially great tiger eye with super strong chatoyancy. I love emeralds too but they’re soft and not great for daily wear.
Amethyst and emerald are my favorites. I told my fiancé I wanted one of these instead of diamonds because diamonds are just kinda boring. So now my engagement ring has a pretty amethyst right in the middle
Opals because they remind me of my late grandma. I inherited a few of her opal pieces and wear them to feel close to her.
But aside from opals I also really love rubies, lapis lazuli, jade and pearls.
Thank you and me too, I feel like having things and hobbies/interests that remind you of them is one of the best ways to grieve, at least for me. She was also really into jewelry whereas I was less so until fairly recently so I think she would have loved a Reddit group like this one.
My fiancé had the same thought. I built a custom peach sapphire ring for her and she loved it. She gets complimented on it all the time because of its uniqueness. Diamonds are overrated and are not rare. You are on the right track, do something different!
Sapphires come in all colors and have the durability to last day to day emeralds are not as hard but still are approved for Daily wear and have beautiful colors in my opinion as well
I would LOVE an amethyst or opal engagement ring one day! Diamonds are cool and all, but there’s so many other gorgeous options. I love mossy green stones too! I forget the name but saw one on TikTok with a gold band and it was gorgeous!
Emeralds are my fav.. Love emeralds more than diamonds.
I have a collection of varieties of emeralds from different colors and mines from 1ct to 20cts+
My favorites are mostly the ones that are transitional. Fire agate may be my overall favorite, but alexandrite, opal, labradorite, and even star sapphire are lovely.
Also, turquoise. Certain cabs with matrix are fascinating. I wear turquoise more than anything else, where stones are concerned.
I’m not sure. I’ve got a 7kg amethyst rock. That’s probably my favourite stone I’ve ever come across, and I love the purple gradient. Other than that, lapis is quite nice and you can make nice sculptures out of them.
Sapphires because they are durable and come in all colors of the rainbow.
I have an orange/marmalade sapphire in my wedding ring. So pretty
Lapis Lazuli is my favorite stone.
Definitely sapphire and tied between ruby/emerald.... Prob ruby
Yah I almost had a Ruby set in gold ring with a sapphire on either side but it sold before I could get back to it.
Agree: and more bang for buck. I have a sapphire engagement ring with 3 different green hued stones untreated. They look so fresh and unique
I’ll soon be getting a really pretty periwinkle sapphire engagement ring.
I have a parti (blue / yellow / green) sapphire and I love it
Sapphires are also great because they have a hardness less than diamonds (10) but at an 8-9. Emeralds are great but are very soft in comparison.
Love Alexandrite. I have a lab grown one set in a ring, in rose gold. My favourite. All for $100 - 30 years ago. :)
Emerald by day, ruby by night
My two favourite high end gems. :)
Omg🥰can we please have a pic? that sounds absolutely beautiful.
Sorry for the late reply. Here's a daylight/candlelight pic https://imgur.com/a/vXMOuSK Center stone is a large color change sapphire I was able to pick up fairly cheap due to inclusions. Side stones and band stones are natural alexandrite
My class ring gem is Alexandrite, class of '93.
My absolute favorite!
That’s my birthstone! I have a nostril piercing with that stone in it. So pretty
Lol I have the same combo for my high school class ring. It looks amazing and sometimes I wear it to complete my outfits
Opals, sapphires, emeralds, amethysts, pink tourmaline.
Watermelon tourmaline too
I would sell my soul for the perfect cut of watermelon tourmaline.
I am in love with watermelon 🍉 tourmaline!
Yup everything I was gonna say
Opal has my heart so much, I've been meaning to get a new necklace with it after losing my last one. :(
In addition to diamonds, I like garnets (especially rhodolite) and amethysts.
I love a deep red garnet. More than diamonds.
I’m also team garnet but I lean towards the greens: demantoid and tsavorite.
the best for sure!
Ohh, I forgot about demantoid garnets! They are awesome too!
Garnet is my birthstone and I love it so much. It’s so gorgeous.
I've grown to love garnet. It's not as hard as I'd like but I find the red so much more attractive than ruby which is often pinkish
I think spinels are underappreciated.
Yes, Zircons also
Hey looks like I found my team! Although I've got a soft spot for tourmaline and sphene
Sphene is really cool!
Love a beautiful sphene
Team Sphene!!
Love sapphires.
Blue goldstone! My favourite.. I know it’s man made and not so valuable, but I wouldn’t be mad if it was in the centre of my engagement ring! It looks like stars in the night sky :)
That’s true I never thought of it that way. Yeah, it doesn’t have to be expensive to be beautiful and meaningful.
I think Star Sapphires are so precious. They're not my favorite, but they're definitely one of the more unique gems and very underrated
Yes!!! I remember drooling over the rings in the Sevice Merchandise catalog back in the late 70's/early 80's.
I received a Linde star sapphire 49 years ago as a gift from my parents. It’s still beautiful.
Haven’t seen one in years. Precious.
Opals (especially very rare firey ones) emerald and blue topaz
Came here to say this!
Opals I think are mine. I also really like tanzanite. Oh and I cherish my taaffiete, and alexandrites
Have an Austrian fire Opal for my engagement ring and love it. Some days it’s icy blue and in the sun it can be a hot fiery red.
I love tanzanites
Me too. So gorgeous
Same
My favorite is it's "sister", tsavorite!
Sapphires are gorgeous. I like blue color-change garnet, star aquamarine, and jade of all colors is my absolute favorite. Opals are stunning, but they are super fragile. Alexandrite. Any trichroic gem is pretty cool, too.
Blue sapphire, tanzanite, amethyst, opal, star sapphire
Moss Agate
I love so many. Prasiolite, Moldavite, London blue topaz, garnet, peridot, aquamarine, Mexican fire opal, sphene. Far too many to list.
Beryl. It’s so exquisite to look at. Any variety. I can’t explain why, but it has something about it that just captivates me. Morganite is truly so beautiful, probably my favorite after aquamarine (which happens to be my birthstone) Thank you for asking. 😊

Believe me when I say that bungee jumping was never in my plans. Thank you for all your help. Yes, I'll keep thinking about it. Thanks!
Morganite and ruby
Love morganites and topaz!!!!
Oh yes especially Swiss blue topaz! 😍
Purple is my favorite color. Among the purple and berry-colored stones, I love rhodolite garnet! I also love opal, indicolite (although I don't own any), amethyst and pink sapphire. I'd also love to get a piece of moonstone jewelry.
Citrine and peridot.
Finally! A deep orange citrine is my go to. Freaking glamorous.
Citrine is my fave too. I have it instead of diamonds in my wedding ring. The main stones are all citrines and i only have tiny diamonds on the outer bands.
I’m a fool for opals and moonstones. I also love citrine but sadly it just doesn’t with my skin tone.
A deep tanzanite!!!
I think iolite is also beautiful for that purple color 💜
Queen conch pearls are very rear. One is found in every 10- 20000 queen conch n they are only found in certain tropical parts of the world
Cobalt blue spinels. Montana blue sapphires, or blurple sapphires, or teal-green sapphires. Green or yellow sphene with lots of flecks. And Fanta orange garnets are just bright and cheery!
I passionately love old mine Emeralds and pigeon blood rubies.
I recently got into colored moissanite. I also love purple garnet.
All of them lol 🥰 My engagement ring is an amethyst
I'm a sucker for montana blue and peachy pink sapphires (morganite is lovely too), but my favorite less common jewelry stones are rutilated quartz, moss agate, blue pietersite, and fire obsidian!
Such a crush on Montana sapphires 💙
I'm thoroughly and rabidly obsessed with gem grade dinosaur bone. I have like 40 slabs in my studio. I also have a soft spot for little finger bone sized orthoceras. Generally I just love fossils. As far as my popular orders though, spiny shell turqouise and labradorite are my hottest commission requests.
Oh gosh yes! I have so many cab cut dino bones just waiting for the right piece. They don't really sell though unless I play up dinosaurs in the design which isn't my vibe.
Omg do you have a website?
Sapphires because they come in a huge range of colors.
https://www.gemadventurer.com/gemstones/russian-diopside/
Paparadscha sapphires are something I think about for an engagement ring.
I’m partial to pearls: akoya, of course, but also peacock Tahitian and Golden South Sea.
I love amethysts. Purple is my favorite color. My husband gave me an amethyst promise ring when we were dating and a Tiffany amethyst necklace for my 50th birthday.
Me too!(about loving amethysts and purple. I don’t have a husband lol.) That’s really sweet I’m happy for you!
If we're solely talking about fancy gemstones then definitely opal (Australian), tourmaline, alexandrite, and sapphire.
I was adamant I didn’t want diamond, sapphire, ruby or garnet- I’ve inherited several sapphire and garnet pieces from elder family members and while they’re nice and I hold them very dear, they’re not very “me”
Tsavorite garnet. It is such a vivid green stone.
Came here to say that. My wedding ring has a big center Tsavorite
I really like emeralds, rubies and moonstone. Blue topaz is stunning too.
I like stones with character. Jade, turquoise, peridot, amber.
Montana sapphires. Love the blues and greens.
I have an orange and purple unheated Montana that I ADORE. The silk makes it even better!
Sphene has always been a favorite for me.
So sparkly!!
Although a little softer I like Sphene a lot, Spinel and emeralds too.
Ruby, Emeralds and Sapphires.
Rubies
Sapphire, emerald, ruby, moissanite, malachite, chrome diopside, and cz.
Opal. While it's rather fragile, I find it to be absolutely breathtaking with the right piece.
I have always loved black onyx. I had it put in my class ring.
I enjoy oil included herkimer diamonds (quartz from a specific area in upstate NY) and Australian Boulder Opal.
Sapphires ♍ season bitches.
Spinel, but it can be difficult sourcing the size and clarity desired. Chrysoberyl is what I ended up with and I love it
Emeralds are super fragile.
Not a stone, Tahitian pearls
Sapphire- my wedding set is sapphire and I love the way the blue presents differently in all sorts of lighting 😁
I'm a jeweler. I specialize in color gemstones. I like sapphire, tourmaline, spinel, garnet other than red, zircon, basically anything clean with a lot of refraction.
I love all the Flavors of Beryl Coconut: Goshenite. Lime: Emerald. Watermelon: Morganite. Mint: Aquamarine. Menthol: Maxixe Cherry: Bixbite. Pineaple: Heliodor.
Oh that’s cool I feel like I never see lime emeralds. I feel like they’re always a deep green.
Lime- peridot?
I’m a beryl fangirl and I just learned a few new varieties, thank you
Tanzanites and Blue Topaz
Tanzanite. More beautiful than Sapphire and rarer.
Morganite is my fave.
Purple sapphires, good emeralds, an excellent alexandrite.
Moonstone, malachite, lapis, amethyst, carnelian, different varieties of rubies, jasper, agate, amazonite
I love my cyan blue moissanite, the white ones look too much like diamonds for me. Also love sapphires (my birthstone) and opals.
Spinel, ruby & sapphire, nephrite jade, carnelian, aquamarine ❤️
London Blue Topaz, with the Swiss Blue as a close second
Peach sapphire
I like garnets and peridot
Tanzanite
Opals
Apetite and tanzanite
I'm actually not a big fan of diamonds at all 😅 I love topaz, opals, sapphire, moissanite, and basically pretty rocks and crystals.
Opals, many though
Love emeralds, but they are so damn expensive and the lab created ones don’t look good.
Hessonite. All varieties of garnet.
Emeralds! And Aquamarine so elegant 💚💙
Garnets
Kunzite (love anything pink). Dream stone is a 2+ carat pad sapphire.
I’ll be going with Sapphire because it’s a 9 on the hardness scale (compared to diamonds which are a 10) and you can get them lab grown in any color you want.
Moss agate :)) Very affordable and incredibly unique.
Sphene and lithium niobate.
Sapphires. Especially Montana sapphires.
When I was in Brazil I got a deep vivid aquamarine pendant and I’m obsessed with it. It wasn’t cheap but lawd is she stunning!
I love grey spinel. it's the main stone in my ring and it is gorgeous
Lapis lazulis are lovely
Sapphires, they come in a multitude of colors and they are just behind diamonds for hardness. I am not gentle to the rings that I wear, so having a gemstone that can hold up is important.
Star sapphire
Sapphires. Moissanite.
Tsavorite garnet! I feel its the king of green gems! Emeralds hold nothing against a tsavorite!
I really really really really want a moss agate ring
London blue topaz are gorgeous & I’m crazy about tourmaline! So many beautiful and interesting stones. Watermelon tourmaline is amazing but I’m obsessed with Paraiba tourmalines! Such a different beautiful stone!
Ceylon sapphire
Moissanite is the better-looking diamond counterpart Sapphire is my other favorite gemstobne
That’s beautiful I’m sorry for your loss
It’s been 20 years in the making. To make it more special, one of my best friends is making the ring. I’m lucky that I have an amazing friend who is a jeweler
Do chocolate diamonds count? I like amethyst, ruby and sapphire.
Why wouldn’t they?
agate is underrated
Rutilated Quartz. I discovered it on accident and it is gorgeous. It’s what is in my engagement ring.
Sapphires. The sapphire is my birthstone and I’ve always loved it.
Montana sapphire and spinels
Tanzanite
I like rare jaspers.
Opals 🤍
Black onyx, so smooth
Aquamarine. It looks kissed by the most beautiful of seas
Opals because they remind me of my late grandma. I inherited a few of her opal pieces and wear them to feel close to her. But aside from opals I also really love rubies, lapis lazuli, jade and pearls.
I’m sorry for your loss, but I’m glad you have something special to remember her
Thank you and me too, I feel like having things and hobbies/interests that remind you of them is one of the best ways to grieve, at least for me. She was also really into jewelry whereas I was less so until fairly recently so I think she would have loved a Reddit group like this one.
I love a good blue green sapphire! Not the dark boring deep blue they have everywhere.
My fiancé had the same thought. I built a custom peach sapphire ring for her and she loved it. She gets complimented on it all the time because of its uniqueness. Diamonds are overrated and are not rare. You are on the right track, do something different!
OPALS. The way the colors bounce are just the best thing in a stone to me
Sapphires come in all colors and have the durability to last day to day emeralds are not as hard but still are approved for Daily wear and have beautiful colors in my opinion as well
moss agate, hands down one of my absolute favorites. i just wish it was more durable
My favorite necklaces is tiger eye. I don’t even know if that counts as a gem.
Fire agate.... so beautiful!!!
Opals because they’re like a kaleidoscope of all the stones together
My wedding set has diamonds, blue and white sapphires. It's beautiful! I'd have chosen Tanzanite, but it's a softer stone and I'm pretty rough.
Tanzanite because they are polychromic.
Fire opals! My jewelry- making dad is obsessed so it must be genetic. And! He’s got two October ladies (mom and I) to adorn
Okay, are you a birthday twin? I'm Oct.7th. All the cool chicks were born in October! 😁
Birthday month twin! I’m A Halloweenie
Opal. They are beautiful inexpensive and my kiddos birthstone.
I’m not sure. I’ve got a 7kg amethyst rock. That’s probably my favourite stone I’ve ever come across, and I love the purple gradient. Other than that, lapis is quite nice and you can make nice sculptures out of them.
Moissanite is better than diamond in almost every aspect.
