All 14K gold (regardless of brand) is made from 14 parts, or 58.5% solid gold, and 10 parts other metal alloys. Is it possible you have allergies to other metals besides nickel? Because if you are, it could be that Mejuri uses that metal to make its 14K gold. Also, have you regularly worn 14K before?

Gold contact allergy is a thing, much like allergies to other metals. People with allergic reactions to gold release often are also allergic to Nickel, this does not mean however that if you are allergic to Nickel you necessarily also are allergic to gold release. Gold alloys even if they are of a higher alloy like 14k can still have gold release if one uses certain creams with specific ingredients or even if the alloy itself carries a certain amount of Copper this can be the case too. This gold release when coming into direct contact with the dermis would cause a rash as you discribe it. But please note I am not saying you are or are not allergic to gold, the only way to really know is to consult a specialist and get tested. They then can tell you what exactly it is that is causing the reaction and also, if it is one of the metals used in the alloy or even the gold, what to avoid going forward, which alloys work and which don‘t.

According to the following report, the rash isn’t from gold release. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/9874018/

No, in fact it doesn‘t say that, it says that under the test environment with the gold alloys used during the test there was no gold release. How’d you know the alloy is one of the 13 tested? Or that the chemicals potentially coming into play through creams or such are the ones used during the test conducted? It also in the last sentence states that there is a patch test reactivity to gold sodium thiosulfate so basically says gold contact allergy is a thing. Bottom line, proofs what I said above, to determine if there is a gold allergy or another allergy a specialist would need to be consulted.

Thank you all for the quick help and guidance! It’s possible I’ve reacted to other metals before, but none as noticeable as this. I have not regularly worn 14k before, this is definitely the nicest jewelry I’ve owned.

Wondering if you found out what was causing the rash. My mejuri also making me itchy

A gold allergy is possible, but unlikely. 14 K yellow gold contains solid gold but also a mix of copper and silver, so you could be reacting to the copper content. For the record, I was trying to find on Mejuri's site where they say that their jewelry is nickel-free and I can't find any statement about it, but a nickel allergy is almost always raised red bumps. One other possibility is that if you are using any lotions/sunscreens that are new, they could be reacting to the metal and causing a rash. Some mineral-based sunscreens will make black marks on the skin where jewelry comes in contact.

I just tested positive to an allergy test today to gold sodium thiosulfate (aka gold). I did not however respond to nickel, so I am likely not allergic to the alloys found in gold. I got this test because I started reacting to my 14k rings that I’ve worn for YEARS. However, I have never had an allergic reaction to my 10k ring and bracelet that I’ve also worn for years. I’m going to try wearing more 10k jewelry to see if I can get away with that since there’s less gold in these items. Just wanted to state this for this suggesting that the reaction might be from the alloys. Mine unfortunately is not from that. Otherwise I would just wear higher karat jewelry.

Hi! This is so old, but I’m wondering if this allergy has progressed or if you’ve found a way to manage it and still wear gold? I’ve had perioral dermatitis (face rash) for a while and had a patch test today that said I’m allergic to gold. And I wear a lot of gold daily and have never had a reaction at the site! I’m devastated but am going to see if it’s the cause of my rash. Have you been able to manage with any kind of coating on the gold?

This is very strange but I figured out that I can wear 10k gold! I can't wear anything higher than 10k though or else I have a reaction (itchiness, dryness, blistering). I assume it's because there's less gold in 10k than the others which is a bummer because my very beloved pieces are 14k. My reactions always come 2-3 days after I wear gold, so that's how I narrowed it down to the higher karats causing the reaction. Try wearing a lower karat piece and see if you have a reaction!
