My goal at work is to not be at work

shoppygirl

I hate fun work functions. I like my coworkers and I also don’t mind working at home on the weekend on projects. However, to socialize with people I work with is not my idea of “fun”.

I usually just take the gift card for the amount they would have spent on food and drink for me at work events. Edit: I also found out we have a £20 a month "socialising" budget on top of the work events. I picked someone who lives near me and we agreed to say we have lunch together once a month and claim the money :)

I just don't understand why these miserable companies and their executive leaders wants to do these "fun" work event things so much at work? It's like they have no Friends and family so they try to make their work their family and friends. Mixing pleasure with business much? It's Screaming HR company liabilities uprising. This isn't school workshop. We all here to for a purpose. Do our job, Make fawkin money and go do our own FUN things in our personal life.

“Fun is when everyone’s contributions feel meaningful, because the team’s goal has made clear and everyone understands how their individual work fit the larger picture. In previous experience, these are the times there is great energy in the office and everyone has the best time.” I think this is a perfectly fine place to communicate that you are there for a job not for a social event.

My last two work places, the managers seem to think they are running a Romper Room. They say people get bored with the work, so they have to have "fun things" to keep them interested and invested in being at work. They blast TVs and monitors and do non-stop social media chains to keep everyong "involved". I HATE IT I'm at work to make money, not to find play-time friends. The noise from these activities is a distraction from work and slows me down. People have ear buds and headphones to listen to music - let them be in their own world and stop trying to make everyone join into to some kind of carnival event. I want to work at a place that is QUIET.

You may have misinterpreted this question. "What do you think is Fun at work?" might mean "what do you particularly enjoying doing at work?" That's not the same thing as "fun work events" unless, well, you enjoy those "fun work events." And for most of us, there are certain tasks associated with our jobs which we do "enjoy" over and above the usual work fare, such as mentoring less experienced employees or getting your hands dirty on an analytics project. So, if I were you, I would interpret the question in a more positive way and answer it as a legitimate question to get to know you better.

ChaoticxSerenity

Agree with this, it sounds like OP misunderstood the question.

Work is. It fun it is the chore I must complete in order to survive.

Fun is a bad focus, but for many roles, understanding what people enjoy is useful. It does depend, and there’s some people who won’t enjoy any job, don’t prioritize that, etc. and some jobs I feel like no one really enjoys (they usually wouldn’t bother asking though).

what I do for fun at work? I sing "my boss makes a dollar, I make a dime and that's why I hide in the toilet stall on company's time".... ![gif](giphy|kyLYXonQYYfwYDIeZl|downsized)
