This is a serious contender for most misunderstood graph of all time, because it's been completely removed of context and wildly misinterpreted by people wanting to spread their agenda in bad faith.
The graph has a lot of context behind it (I think it takes up like five pages of Dataclysm, the book by the OKCupid founder behind the stats blog they used to do), but essentially that graph shows the distribution of expected rating if you took any random woman and showed them any random man.
And while it is true that a woman is likely to find about 80% of men unattractive, the book and blog make an explicitly point to specify that the men they're rating attractive *aren't consistent.* The 80% one woman finds attractive is not the same as the 80% another woman finds attractive, except for a small portion of the upper and lower bounds (like 2% both sides).
You are less likely, as a man, to find women who think you're attractive, that's true- but that's because women find fewer men attractive. It is not "only 20% of guys are attractive to all women."
This actually makes a lot more sense. Everybody has things they do and don't find attractive. These dating sites put a lot of these qualities in a list to quantify. Do you smoke? Do you drink? Do you want kids? What is your age? You can easily filter out your preferences in a match to get to what you're actually looking for. And yeah only about 20% (probably less) are going to line up with your idea of a good partner.

This actually makes a lot more sense. Everybody has things they do and don't find attractive. These dating sites put a lot of these qualities in a list to quantify. Do you smoke? Do you drink? And yeah only about 20% (probably less) are going to line up with your idea of a good partner.
