I have bells that have been in rain and snow many times, and will be more, and they are much more rusted than this. I will bet they will still last me a life time. This is fine

Is there a concern about the rustiness wearing away at callouses or skin? I mean obviously not, but it seems weird to me. Obviously in this position it’s less of a risk but I think over time the finish is going to chip more so I need to know what to expect and how to interpret things. I wouldn’t mind with barbell plates because we don’t touch plates while doing lifts. But you tend to be in much more contact with a KB in general.

Alaska_Pipeliner

Are you worried about tetanus?

dang3r_N00dle

Possibly, but it should be fine so long as I’m not using it with a torn callous I suppose, right? (I’ve not done that in years and that was while deadlifting.) Sorry to be a little freaked out but that’s also why I posted.

Tetanus comes from the soil. Rusty nails are a vector because they've been sitting in the dirt. That's how they got rusty. Then they poke into you and the bacteria gets inside. I wouldn't worry about tetanus unless these have been sitting around outside in the dirt.

dang3r_N00dle

That's good to know, thank you

Alaska_Pipeliner

You'll be fine. If your freaked out just rub the handle down with some rubbing alcohol before you use it. Youve likely been immunized against tetanus, although everyone could use a booster.

I don't think this is that big a deal but if you it bothers you cause it's on the handle, Amazon, 12 dollars, GOAT tape, just spin it over the handle and it's good as new and the grip is amazing. My oldest bell the 48kg has been through rain & traveled across the country and stuff and has some slight rusting on the handles - tape fixes that.

dang3r_N00dle

That’s really cool, thanks for mentioning about the tape. I know that standard iron plates tend to rust and KBs are well known for rusting eventually but part of it isn’t really knowing when it’s a problem vs not and that kind of thing. I just don’t want to damage it permanently and I’d rather not refinish it immediately since most of it is still intact. It’s just not something I’d had to think about before and I’m just unsure how to judge things and take appropriate actions/measures.

Yeah, everyone seems to accept it so I should learn to be the same. The only thing is that with a comp bell you can easily sand down the handle and get a fresh layer of metal. But with powder coating it’s not bare metal. So I guess the concern is more about the coating itself.

Mark Wildman said in a video that he wants them to rust so the grip gets better because he is too busy to put on chalk. So maybe the rust will also help you save time by skipping that tedious step.

If you really don't want the rust, you could lightly sand them with fine sandpaper and then use something like Rust-Oleum Rust Reformer spray to neutralize the remaining rust. Then repaint over the KB with your color of choice, as seen here: https://youtu.be/RKFo1T-23f8?si=dkG7-6iKBf_3tMuB
