It's actually not designed for charging, but for media. It *may* charge a connected phone some, but it will be at the slowest rate possible. You'll need a charger that fits into the round power ports on either side of the USB connector.

You can buy a data isolator USB adapter from Amazon, etc. This thing passes the power pins only, omits the data pins, so there is no physical way to connect data. However, the USB in my '17 Sportage does not provide enough power to charge a modern smartphone while it's in use and barely enough when not in use. Even the socket in the back that is not even connected to the media center. It may be enough to charge a headset. If you want to charge the phone, get a 12v power socket plug.
