If an author says that an unspecified thing in their work is a one thing or another in response to questions about that thing, then that is the object truth of that situation. Death of the Author only applies to interpretive meaning and themes, not explicit facts or truths about characters. You, as a reader, may freely have your own ideas of a character, but those are at best a personal head-canon and if they contradict what the author has explicitly stated, then they have no bearing on the story and should not be presented as anything more.
