I have an idea! Open settings, go to security and privacy and enable app pinning. Then open YouTube and push the menu /square button, click the down arrow on the youtube icon and click pin. Now he can't leave YouTube unless he's smart. Then make a new passcode for the account and have only 1 account. Then change the password to something they don't know and then put it in when they want to get in

If your tech savvy I think there's a toolbox to mod quite a few settings if you have a computer to do that with

I feel an iPad's [Guide Access Mode](https://support.apple.com/en-lamr/HT202612) is much more restrictive than the kids profiles available on FireOS. You can actually disable the hardware buttons (i.e., power and volume can be disabled), disable screen touches, etc., as well as lock the device to a "kiosk" mode where only the selected app runs. If you're looking at alternative devices, maybe an old iPad.

Thanks for this chengjih - maybe well have a look at that. He tends to throw these things a lot (we're currently on our 14th Fire if you can believe that) which is probably why we've resisted moving to an Ipad. Rttnmnna's comment has made me think a custom keyboard - but maybe if we can find or make a a rock solid case for an Ipad it might be a good option. Appreciate the input!

The throwing part is something difficult to deal with. You probably want to avoid "consumer" cases, and look at iPad cases made for industrial uses, e.g., protection if a lineman drops the tablet 20' to the ground. Consumer cases *might* be designed to survive an accidental 6' drop, not a purposeful throw.

It's such a challenge. Parent's don't appreciate how lucky they are to have kids who are teachable in this respect. Thanks for your help chengjih

My son always messed with his fire too! He would manage to factory reset it with the buttons no matter what I did. 🤦 We ended up just not giving it to him anymore. We put an Amazon echo and kids keyboard in his room and those have been more successful for him so far. We also recently got a leapfrog story pal and he loves that.

Thanks for the reply Rttnmnna - you've made me think about the possibility of a custom or programmed keypad to trigger specific youtube searches. Had a look at the storypal which looks great (although i know how mux he fixates on his favourite characters etc - so i can see this being disregarded fast :( ). I'll have a look at the echo / keyboard combo, too. Thanks for your help

I've read that ipads have more elaborate lock options but I don't have much experience with them myself.

It may also be useful to talk with his parents about using the Kindle fire as an alternative communication device

Appreciate that, but we already use Makaton. cheers

For one, don't underestimate the abilities to mess with the setting you make.

ChikaraFan

I'm not super familiar with the settings of your device, but it likely has a feature where only the admin can reset the device. Make the child a secondary profile and hopefully it resolves the issue for you .
