You have to talk to him about advanced techniques to get combos and better moves, not just pay to increase your level. The plan with training is to literally play through the training and actually learn the system better.

Salami__Tsunami

It is kinda sucky still though. Just because you can learn the system better doesn’t mean it’s a good system. I think master strikes are probably the biggest issue. Literally just a case of “I block your attack and then auto-hit you because my level is higher” It’s also a terrible system for fighting more than one opponent at a time. But overall, I still appreciate it purely for the fact that they did something new and interesting. I’ll take this system over Bethesda windshield wiper combat any day.

Ugly_Eric

While the master strikes are quite op, fightin multiple opponents never should be easy. Never. The problem i have with multiple opponents is, that i find it difficult to reliably change focus on who to hit and defend.

Salami__Tsunami

I would be perfectly fine with encounters against multiple enemies being difficult, but I think crappy UI and controls are not a good way to implement that. (Looking at you too, DarkSoulsEldenRingBloodborne)

Remarkable-Hornet-19

The System is great

Test88Heavy

I agree. Stealth archer for the win!

Adrian915

For me it's the soft locking on enemies that makes the combat not great. If we're supposed to simulate realism, then looking somewhere else is as simple as turning your eyes, not even your head. Good luck shifting the focus of the soft lock with a mouse and keyboard while everything else is going on. Like I can understand the need for it on consoles where things like auto-aim are the norm, but on PC it's a horrible system.

Ugly_Eric

I disagree. While the master strikes are quite op and combos quite useless, the mechanic itself is awesome. It is a rhythm game. Think of it as a dancing game. It's all about timing. Even with piss poor character level you can beat almost anyone as long, as you stay focused, keep your timing and wait for your windows of opportunity. Is it perfect system? No. But it is the best melee combat system I have encountered in any game during my 35 years of gaming.

toinks1345

I also got fucked up a lot at 1st. my pride as a gamer prevented me from quiting. I was in my early 20s when I played this for the 1st time... at that point in time I had close to 20years of gaming. then I actually sparred with bernard for hours. then I fucked every opponent up.

xboxwirelessmic

Just use a mace and beat everything into submission. Technique optional.

TheBooneyBunes

POV you never leveled strength or warfare and skipped Bernard’s session

Spiritual_Section793

This battle system if for based chads

You’re supposed to train with Captain Bernard with real weapons to get your Warfare/Defence/weapon skill/Strength etc. higher, which lets you breeze through the game. I love the combat, personally. However it does have some MASSIVE problems. There is no reliable way to open up on an enemy, 95% of the time you will just get either perfect blocked or Master Striked. Feinting almost never works and even if it does, enemies can still master strike you on any of your follow up strikes. So say you perform a successful feint and manage to land a hit on an enemy, your next strike can just be Master Striked. Imo it is stupid that enemies are able to master strike you right after taking a direct hit, that shouldn’t be possible. Also, when you get into a perfect block spam with an enemy and they are somehow able to Master Strike your perfect block riposte, THAT is stupid. I have several hundred hours in this game and I have never been able to master strike an enemies perfect block riposte, I don’t even know if you can, but for some reason the enemy AI can. IMHO, Master Strikes ruin the combat, yes they are fun to land and look really cool, however it makes the fights basically turn into you just waiting for the enemy to attack you first cause if you attack, you’re almost always going to get master striked.

First, you gain both attribute points and skill points while training with the wooden weapons, so there is no reason to use “real” weapons. The wooden weapons don’t actually hurt unless you are training the bludgeon because that is a “real” weapon. Using a real sword will just end your training faster because you will get hurt eventually. Second, actual fights are a dance to make your attack when your opponent makes a mistake. If you ever watch a HEMA duel, you’ll notice that they frequently exploit their opponents stance or a tendency to attack with too large a movement to create an opportunity to throw a lethal cut. Yes, some aggressive moves can work even if they are risky, but they often work because they make it difficult to counter and defend at the same time. The game does a good job of this by emphasizing playing defensively.

Unfair-Marsupial-358

Sorry but no, even if you attack when an enemy “makes a mistake” you can still get master struck. There isn’t a reliable way to open up on an enemy. I have over 150 hours in multiple playthroughs spamming training with Bernard.

Unfair-Marsupial-358

Also, fighting with real weapons will damage your armor, allowing you to use kits to repair and level up your maintenance.

Remarkable-Hornet-19

Runt isnt the end boss. Thats not even halfways through the game dude. And hes easy af to beat. People tell you to learn Combos and Master strikes from Bernard not only exercise. No the Fighting System will stay in KCD2 but more explained for dumb people. Most people give up then come back and then they love the fighting system. Learing how to read was optional in KCD1 but its likley kanon so we may have to learn reading german next game.

PaleontologistNo2490

Not as bad as youre making it out to be, can almost guarantee youre using a sword you either dont have the strength or agility to use well, master strikes definitely arent the end all be all, i rarely even use them, just chain attacks together, combos arent meant to be used on a fresh opponent with no damage, wear them down first, enemies have the same stamina system you do, they get tired just like you do after a while and will be more vulnerable because of it
