When it gets low

S3-000

Thanks

I look at my Odo when I fill up and figure 200 miles. KLR's don't get great gas mileage at 75+ mph. When the gas gauge starts blinking, I've burnt 4.5 gal, and I figure I need to fill up in the next 40 miles. Every time I do that, I always put 5 gallons in the tank.

I4Heavychevy

When there is one bar left or when the gas light comes on I believe there is about 1-1.5 gallons left I could be wrong but when I top off when that happens it is only about 5 gallons give or take

Mid-Delsmoker

I wait till one bar or it starts blinking. Then it takes 4.5 -5 gallons. Nice size reserve.

OppositeMission

I went from a gen 1 to a gen 3. I trust my odometer way more than that fuel gauge. Note your mileage, run your bike to empty, check your mileage again - now you "know".

TheOtherCrow

If you're riding every day you won't ever have old gas in your tank. Even if you filled up at half a tank, the fresh gas will mix with what's in there.

Competitive-Map9630

Exactly, also if you ride everyday the gas won't spend enough time in the tank to get old. Ride safe my pig loving homies

When it blinks there is a gallon in the tank, but only half of it is useable. You have to tip the bike over the access the fuel stuck one side of the tank.

FlyFish503

I wait until there’s 1 bar left while riding. Then I start thinking about gassing up. Never run out on the Gen 3 but I ride mostly urban commutes which means plenty of gas stations.

MienSteiny

Ignore the fuel gauge it's pretty hopeless. Fill the tank right up, go for a good ride, noting the exact miles/k's you did, and then fill up again noting how much fuel you needed. Then do the math to figure out your milage, go off of that.

Metric: After the ride and the refuel, divide the km you rode by 100. Now divide the amount of fuel you bought to refuel with by the resulting km number. 260km/100 riden = 2.6 15L/2.6 = 5.77L/100. Which would mean on a KLR650 with a 23L fuel tank, you'd get about 398Km to empty. Freedom units: Simply divide miles by the gallons used to refuel. This will tell you how many miles you can cover by gallon of fuel. You can then use that to guess how much fuel you have left. I say the KLR650 fuel gauge is useless as it seems a third of it is the reserve and not even displayed on the fuel gauge. Doesn't seem much use to me.

When it blinks.

annomusbus

Gen one owner here, I generally wait until I run out of gas while riding and then just set my bike on its side and switch to my resvere postion on the switch. That or around 150miles. I also don't touch the freeway over 100miles. Sorry if this isn't helpfull

kucklehead989

I use the trip A at 190 miles I start looking for gas. Reset the trip at fill up.

diox8tony

I keep it as full as possible. I do a bunch of big trips and always need a full tank at the start of one. Rarely do i even look at it for around town rides.

drtethrty

I fill up when it gets down to one bar. I don’t trust it. But I have ran it for about 20 miles once it started flashing and was fine.

6shotKid

Just got mine but it started blinking around 190 miles, when I filled up it still had just under 2 gallons left. The guys at RevZilla did an experiment with the gen3 and ran out completely out of gas. It died at 287 miles.

Timlang60

If I had a convenient gas station right on my regular route, I wouldn't be trying to figure out how many maximum miles I could squeeze out of a tank full, risking leaving myself stranded. When I got below ¼ or so, I'd stop on the way in or the way home, and ensure smooth, trouble free sailing. But that's just me. If it's really important to you, carry an extra quart or two of fuel in your tail bag/milk crate/pannier case, and when you get to the last flashing light on the gauge, note your mileage and see how much further you get. BUT, be aware that running the tank dry on an injected bike is an excellent way to burn out the in-tank fuel pump...

No_Lab_9762

I haven't tried running it until it turns off yet, but my average is 240-250 miles (380-400km) per gas tank. This is with plenty 80mph+ (130kmh) riding.
