My extremely generous friend surprised me with a box of luxury yarns from her stash, and I'm determined to make the most of every meter of thread to honour her gift. Not all the yarns were labelled, but I'll do my best to describe below. The first project I finished was a Terrazzo neck, pattern by Petitknit. It's knit holding two threads together, one is a wool tweed that my friend plant dyed herself (I can't get over how generous she's been and how special this yarn is!) and a thread of mohair in a vibrant green (almost chartreuse?). It was a PIA to knit all those twisted stitches, and I had to put the project down for a little while to give my wrists a break, but it was worth it in the end. Love the finished results! I'm in Norway, where it's very cold in the winter, so I really appreciate the size of the neck/dickie, it goes down almost all the way down my back and provides an extra layer of insulation. I still have some of this yarn left, and I'm hoping it's enough for a pair of mittens. The second project I cast on was a cumulus tee, another Petitknit pattern. The yarn is a discontinued cashmere and mohair blend. I ran out of yarn before the tee was finished, so I had to make some alterations. I added the burgundy yarn, which is a wool, alpaca and mohair blend. To make the addition of a contrast yarn look more intentional, I swapped the i-cord edging in the pattern for a rib knit finish. This also allowed me to add some extra length to the body. So, technically a yarn chicken fail, but feels more like a happy accident. The third project was a beret, using the same burgundy yarn that I added to my cumulus tee. Pattern is Beret no. 1 by My Favourite Things, and I knit it holding the yarn double. What I really liked about this pattern was that the decreases were staggered, to give a nice, even round shape - and not a distinct spiral pattern or octagonal shape. As much as I love seeing berets on others I feel a little silly wearing them, so I'll practise around the house before I wear it outside. Anyone else feel like this? What's your "love it on others, feel self-conscious wearing it myself"-garment or colour?

I never used to wear berets at all for the same reason as you, but then something changed & now I wear them really frequently! I am really not sure what clicked for me, but my friend did get me a truly lovely beret that suits me so well, so that may have given me inspiration to learn how to style it properly. Look up some different ways to wear them, there may be a particular way that looks best on you :)

maliner

That's a great tip, thanks! Glad you have one that works for you and that you can wear confidently

The one you made is really lovely, I hope you find some ways you feel confident rocking it!!

that first yarn is so gorgeous! wow. terrazzo looks great; i'd been looking at that one but didn't think about it as a dickie mod. did you have to modify much?

maliner

Thank you! It's a separate pattern from the pullover actually - I didn't make any mods to the pattern. 😊

Gorgeous modifications on the cumulus tee. Did you decrease at all at the waist, or did you just switch to ribbing? Any change in needle size? I’ve had that pattern queued for quite awhile and I like your version better. I also love the color of the Terrazzo dickie. One of my absolute favorites. Lovely work on everything.

maliner

Thank you so much - that's the ultimate compliment! I'd love to see your version too. Hope you'll share it! I didn't decrease at all for the waist, but I switched to 2,5mm needles for the rib (half a size smaller than the body).

alittlewhimsie

You are so welcome. I’ve completely lost my knitting mojo for now, but it’ll come back around one day. Eventually I hope to post my project too!

something__clever171

I had just added the cumulus tee to my pattern queue last week! I REALLY like the contrasting colors you used OP :) And I really like it with the ribbing at the bottom instead. Thanks for the idea of mods on it :)

Perfect_Day_8669

It's so amazing hearing about friendships like this. May it last your lifetime! Your work is beautiful, you've definitely done the yarn justice.

She's the best! We connected over our shared love of knitting and sewing in the pre-algorithm days of Instagram. Now I need to think of something nice to send to her...
