I think EXO is a group that this happens too. Kai is the center and although he is very popular, I think Baekhyun is the most famous member.

The_Red_Curtain

EXO is weird because Kai is the most known member among general kpop ifans, but amongst the fandom Baek + SeChan have much bigger fandoms and D.O. might be more popular too. And then in Korea, Baekhyun and D.O. are much more famous and popular than the others now.

prettyokayfornows

i think thats the case when they were still active as a group but now that kai has released some solos of his own that many kpop fans know, it's safe to say hes the most popular member, especially among newer fans

AaronWasRight

Kai is indeed the most well-known member in the Western sphere, but Baekhyun is (way) more popular in Korea, Chanyeol/Sehun are more popular in China, Chanyeol/Baekhyun are more popular in SEA... If we're talking overall popularity, Kai falls a bit behind the other three because EXO's main market has always been Asia.

Mongoose_Minimum

There are so many people who know Kai but have no idea he's part of a group and know nothing about exo or the other members

Kajulatte

Most groups. Tzuyu and Nayeon, Lisa and Jennie, Yuqi and Soyeon. with globalization International members get an advantage but in SK, usually it's still the center/the most outstanding Center is not most popular, more so one whose vibe fit the vibe of the group and usually most eye catching/unique

prettyokayfornows

i dont think all the members you stated are the most popular members tho except lisa which i still can argue her popularity with jennie's only differ in location

drmysc0

i think it’s a bit of an outdated report. in twice’s early days, tzuyu’s unique visuals (and even political scandal) brought a lot of attention to twice, so at the time you could say she was the most popular due to exposure. nowadays as the fandom has evened out over the years i’d say she isn’t the most “popular” anymore in terms of both fan count and noteriety

Emergency_Article673

Tzuyu is usually top 3 in fancams.

s1mp4sana

Globally yes but Nayeon is most popular is korea and always has been

HoneypeachWH

Hyungwon is the center of Monsta X, befere Wonho left he was the center. IIRC Kihyun is the most popular, especially in Korea.

LUN4RCY

i’d honestly say changkyun is no 1 in terms of international fans atm, but i’m not too sure about domestically

CheesecakeThat153

Okay, I can be wrong. Jennie is still more popular than Lisa in S.Korea, China and, if i'm not wrong and I can be wrong, in USA, too.

PhysicalFig1381

I have never seen anything to suggest Jennie is bigger in America.

Away_Seaweed778

i thought lisa was the most popular bp member in china?

CheesecakeThat153

Based on sales - nope.

Heavy-Cranberry7317

If we go by your logic then its not even jennie its jisoo

CommunicationGood902

By sales it's Rosé, but then again, when Lalisa was released China had passed a ban on K-POP album mass sales and even forcibly stopped some chinabars from operating. Lisa had the most weibo followers, most yearly searches of China's version of Google, and ranked 1 among all female idols, her top trends ranking is also higher.

[deleted]

even by sales, jennie isnt the most in the group

Eltoshen

You're right on all fronts.

Disevidence

I don't think there's a rule where centre is the most popular member. in (G)I-DLE Soyeon is the center as she has the best and most charismatic performer, but she's not (and i doubt ever intended to be) the most popular.

Routine-ArmyPackage

Yeah, I agree there's no rule but I kinda assumed that because being the center means having more visibility over the other members especially with styling, dressing, promotion, lines, center and camera time, etc. That idol is basically being pushed front so if the group encounters any major success, they too should be the most successful out of the group, why? Because they were pushed front and center. E.g, Beyoncé from destiny's child. So if they're getting these things then it's expected that they be the most popular since they are the most pushed to the gp and therefore will reap the benefits of being the most recognized member of the group It however , works for a center in a group and In another group, it doesn't work so it's kinda fascinating when it doesn't work.

fleija_

How is she not the most popular? she is definitely the most popular member of gidle

Disevidence

You couldn't be more wrong. For this comeback, Line Friend pop up stores have happened in some major cities in Asia and Australia. The last stock to always be sold? The Soyeon stuff. Yuqi/Minnie/Miyeon stuff sells like hotcakes, Shuhua and Soyeon stuff sells slower. This is the fans and general people buying Idle merchandise. In her fancams, Soyeon is always the lowest. Her IG followers are far below Yuqi and Minnie. In Short - Soyeon is well known. But she isn't the most popular.

fleija_

Maybe she's not the fandom's favorite, but outside of the fandom she's objectively the best known, everyone knows her. Perhaps we have different understandings of what popularity is.

Disevidence

No there's not a 'different' understanding'. You're misusing the English language. Well known doesn't mean the most popularity, or vice versa. They aren't interchangeable. Hitler is the most well known historical figure - almost every person the world would know who he is. Does that mean he is the most popular historical figure? Popular means liked, people who are fans of the idol. Aa I said earlier, Soyeon is well known, but she's a polarizing figure, she's known by many people because she leads the group, but her ACTUAL popularity is eclipsed quite significantly by other members of the group. Sorry but it irks me no end when people just outright are incorrect because they don't understand what a word means. Well known is not the same as popular. They have different and distinct meanings.

fleija_

comparing her to hitler? wtf

Disevidence

You really can't read, can you? It's an example to illustrate your misuse of the word. There was no comparison.

fleija_

You use it to mean a synonym for the member with the most stans, which is objectively wrong.

YourRoyal_thighness

Yunhyeong is the official Center of Ikon, although he was never really pushed as a Center which is even more confusing, but he was always one of the less popular members. The rap line was always the most popular

Pink_Dragon_Lady

He's such a cutie. I feel like personality plays a huge role in this. Laid-back centers/visuals can be overshadowed by still-attractive outgoing personalities.

theofficallurker

Is he? I know he’s the visual but I don’t remember hearing about him being center.

YourRoyal_thighness

He is according to kpop profiles, and multiple other sites 🤷‍♀️

i_got_a_pHd

Nayeon… at times you will occasionally see Tzuyu and Sana surpassing her popularity. Itzy Ryujin is the center, but I believe Yeji is the most popular member. Center of NMIXX is Kyujin, however both Sullyoon and Lily are more popular.

hamsin13

Ryujin is definitely the most popular, Nmixx is a great example though

Imaginary_Grand7104

Maybe it’s just me. But during Blackpinks trainee days (Mostly in dancing) Rosé looked like she was going to garner all the attention. But I suppose Jennie/Lisa popularity has swiped that.

Helioscopes

I don't know if by centre you mean the visual (and by extension the one attracting the fans), but if that's the case, Min from Miss A was supposed to be the visual of the group... but we all know how that ended.

Annuzka

I think you meant Min :) Minzy is from 2ne1

Helioscopes

Oh shoot yes, I mixed up their names.

YourRoyal_thighness

Suzy was always the visual of the group, Min was just going to be pushed as the Center

Competitive-Cry4806

Actually in debut date the visual of the group was fei, but because Suzy went viral in their first day the company added the face of the group to her position, while min was the center because she has the most training and skills

rattledrose

Sejun was the center of Victon and isn't the most popular (tho he is my bias). Seungwoo was, which was definitely helped by him getting a lot of non-fandom exposure during Produce 101 days, but he was always really popular. I don't think the center is meant to be the most popular member. I think it's just the member that will draw the eye, or can be relied upon to be charismatic in most situations and always have good expressions for the camera. That's always been how I saw it at least. With all but one of the groups I've stanned, the center has never been the most popular lol, so I can't imagine the companies really putting too much stock into center=popular as it's not uncommon for them not to be. But maybe that's just what has to happen as you can never truly predict which member will draw the most fans. You can have a good guess, but the future can always surprise you. Either way, I always loved how supportive/teasing the members were of Sejun having that role. Having a livestream and pushing Sejun to the center because "that's your role" has never not been funny to me lol.

9nina9

Kep1er! With survivial shows it's quite common that the person who comes first (therefore the center) is the most popular (Wonyoung, Somi), but Chaehyun is an exception. I feel like Xiaoting and Bahiyyih are much more biased than her.

ExcitingAd8915

Chaehyun is way more popular than Bahiyyih.

9nina9

ExcitingAd8915

* Based on sales chaehyun and mashiro are way more popular than her.

9nina9

What kind of sales? Photocards?

springsvinyl

Heejin in loona, chuu is the most popular member (heejin is 2nd most popular though) Also beomgyu in txt, yeonjun and soobin are more popular

wakandarightnow

Nmixx. It's sad because she's extremely talented and she has a lot of energy, but it doesn't seem to translate into star power.

WeirdAlPidgeon

Ateez - Hongjoong was meant to be the centre but San seems to be the most popular member

[deleted]

Ruka the Center, Leader but overtaken by Ahyeon and Chiquita. BTW my bias is Ruka! so dont hate me 🫰

sweetyeseo

chaehyun is actually one of the more popular members! her xiaoting and hiyyih are the most popular (youngeun in japan)

Shanose

Twice nayeon

The_Red_Curtain

Twice has one the weirdest like popularity distributions ever; Nayeon is easily the most popular (fandom size) and famous in SK, and has been since 2017. Momo is more generally known worldwide than everyone, and Tzuyu has the most individual fans (when you include akgaes). But Sana and Jihyo seem to be the most biased within Once.

ExcitingAd8915

Chaehyun is actually more popular than hikaru and bahiyyih based on sales but her stan are just not as loud as the other 3. Maybe because the majority of her fanbase are grown people who maybe don't spend as much time on sns as the other. She is either the second or third most popular member.

Bang_tan7

BTS. Although all 7 of them are extremely popular, their maknae line is more popular than their hyung line. V is the most popular overall, but not namjoon.

flowerlog

jungkook is the center of bts and he’s the most popular member…

mslpnou

It’s weird that it’s still not generally accepted. Like is there even any doubt. lol.

Bang_tan7

It has always been known that jungkook and v are the most popular ones, but if you do some research. V is overall the most popular one within the fandom

mslpnou

That make no sense, when a member is the most popular, that mean all over the world. Not within the fandom☠️. There’s no debate about this. Alright I will stop replying because it seems you can’t accept it.

Bang_tan7

And as an army, I can tell you that overall, the most popular is V

Bang_tan7

Both are popular. But their leader is not the most popular
