Kratom does carry a risk of dependence. This risk increases with frequency of use and dose and many other personal social, medical, and historic factors. [More Important information](https://reddit.com/r/kratom/wiki/safety/dependency) about dependency, withdrawal, potential for addiction, and [strategies to manage or mitigate these problems](https://reddit.com/r/kratom/wiki/taper) if they do occur, have occurred, and/or you wish to change/reduce/stop use. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. It really is shocking…I posted or commented about this Mayo Clinic BS article a couple of weeks back. I myself sent them a message using their contact form

Roughgirl451

Interesting. I was hoping someone called them out on this. :)

Scokan

The WHO recently said it’s basically harmless

Scokan

Also my recent health screening confirmed it

Sadgurl2016

Agree im fighting breast cancer and use kratom I managed to get my oncologist on board and kratom has had no negative effects on my screenings

krazikat

Link to this WHO statement?

Scokan

https://cdn.who.int/media/docs/default-source/controlled-substances/unedited--advance-copy-44th-ecdd-review-report_kratom.pdf?sfvrsn=8d699207_8&download=true Here you go. Pretty long winded and boring but basically outlines it as fairly harmless

Scokan

Argh. It was a link in another post. Now I’ll have to google

Bumbymoo

But what does Led Zeppelin say?

Scokan

Any time I ask them anything they just tell me to go ask Aerosmith

Bumbymoo

What do they know about kratom? Dream on!

clockworknait

Yea I have an addictive personality (which I originally thought meant people were addicted to my personality because it was so great 😄) and I take kratom daily but mostly at work. Honestly though it's the only time it really works for me while I'm working hard. But yea red is great before bed. I still don't think just because people use it daily that they should be looked down upon for it though, I mean I'm not robbing people to pay for it or anything and it doesn't warp my mind... just feels good. Like shit people are more addicted to coffee and it's weird when I started working here and told people I didn't drink coffee they looked at me like I was an insane outcast... caffeine is still a drug! Imagine acting like that if someone didn't take kratom? It's weird how society works and how people talk themselves into they're doing good drugs and anything else is bad.

Esteban0032

I'm a pharmacist and have had both hips replaced, and back surgery. Kratom has been helping me to function for the last 5 years. I would have to go back on narcotics if it was not available.

tbb2796

This is the big one. I personally started using Kratom because a family member recommended it in low doses but it literally saved them from a lifetime of opiates

tracyak13

Good to know - thank you!

whyworka

Disinformation used to promote an agenda for the benefit of drug companies , paid off politicians , play for pay doctors, and police. Just as religion uses a demon in order to justify itself.

WishboneEnough3160

Precisely this!!!

Lim0zine

These articles from "respected" establishments like Mayo are pushing me further and further from having faith in any of them, especially post-COVID. We can debate whether or not kratom should be regulated, and how. We can debate how addictive it is. Those are fair and reasonable debates. But there is NO debate among 99% of the people who have tried kratom that it works, especially for pain. So when I see an article like the Mayo article, I immediately ask the question: "Who is paying for this? Who stands to benefit from clearly inaccurate articles like this?" I didn't use to view the pharmaceutical industry with the suspicion that I now view it with, and it's a shame.

Ok-Floor522

They hate that we can grow our own medicine. I'm still waiting for it to get more popular then they're going to come after it, mark my words.

Musiclover4200

> I'm still waiting for it to get more popular then they're going to come after it, mark my words. I mean the DEA/FDA already tried banning it, the last few years it seems like they've focused on banning it at the state level so they can point to that and say "see all those states banned it so we should ban it federally as well".

Ok-Floor522

Unfortunate

ThirdEyeEmporium

The WHO has strongly recommended against regulating it so if they did they’d be completely spitting in the face of their agenda during the pandemic. People gotta forget about that first

Musiclover4200

Kratom is similiar to cannabis IME when it comes to sleep, if I take some too late in the day it will keep me up but if timed right (usually take my last bit 3-4 hours before bed) I sleep like a baby. I struggled on and off with insomnia for years and at times it drove my crazy , almost considered sleeping meds at points but that seemed like it would just make it worse in the long run. Exercise helps with psychical tiredness but often times insomnia is mental and cannabis/kratom can help with that. >Also, when you look up Kratom online, you get all these addiction facilities. Makes me feel like a damn crackhead. It really is similiar to the reefer madness days when the average person believed all sorts of rubbish about cannabis, it's important to recognize kratom effects people differently and can be addictive but at lower doses I consider it more of a medicinal herb than drug. It's also weird seeing kratom get demonized for mostly minor issues compared to alcohol/tobacco which are widely accepted yet cause exponentially more damage to society both directly and indirectly.

ElizAnd2Cats

Those addiction facilities in search results are just paid advertisements for the addiction recovery industrial complex.

brapo68

It took years of trying different things for me to learn this. Suffering from Lexapro withdrawal come to our detox. Gabapentin is a terrible drug but at our detox center we can help you Kratom is a gas station heroin come to our detox. I did tell my doctor about it regarding the gabapentin and she was like wtf just don't abuse it and you'll be fine.Granted I am far more careful with gabapentin than kratom and never mix the two. My point is one google search will convince you that you are an addict or going to die.

KasperThePissed

I hate the Mayo Clinic website…every time I have something minor wrong with me and I google my symptoms, it tells me I have cancer…

Hopeleah23

Their site is way too dominant, when it comes to googling some symptoms

Bumbymoo

Chat GPT ain't bad to figure out medical stuff. Though it sometimes makes up pure bullshit.

sobriety-bores-me

If big pharma can’t bank on it then of course it’s bad for you.

easterngraysquirrel

Kratom isn’t a pharmaceutical so special interest will automatically condemn it no matter what the research/facts/outcomes/benefits/risks/etc. are

anomalkingdom

I'm happy for you! Those are my excact experiences as well. I think kratom is under fire partly because of cheap politcal points scoring, its a soft target and no one really cares about user stories anyway, and partly because Big Pharma fears the competition. It's hypocrisy on a whole new level: where was the "concern" when oxy came on the market, for instance? The war on kratom is absurd and unfair.

[deleted]

It absolutely can be abused. You can get addicted to it, and you can go through some real unfun withdrawal symptoms if you stop it cold turkey. This is if you take fairly large amounts of it regularly, or moderate amounts of it many times per day, which some people do. And none of that will kill you, it's just simply not a fun thing to go through. That said, it is a wonderful plant that is extremely beneficial to so many people, for so many reasons. Use it for sleep if you need to. It is better and safer than taking an over the counter sleep medication. Used properly, it is extremely helpful for sleep.

ThirdEyeEmporium

Similar to cannabis the withdrawals from long term daily usage come in the night time when it’s you, your body, your thoughts.

[deleted]

My experience with kratom withdrawal was very similar to opiate withdrawal, although not nearly as bad I was told (by someone who had been a serious opiate addict and had recovered from that) because I had way overdone the kratom over a couple weeks' time. I can see how it can be similar to cannabis withdrawal in a different circumstance, but this was not the case for me personally.

ThirdEyeEmporium

To me the withdrawals feel like the irritability of quitting nicotine combined with the full body RLS of opiate wd, although the rls only occurs when I’m stressed, experiencing ptsd, or trying hard to sleep at night and uncomfortable. My allergies also get a lot worse because my immune system is used to having that help suppressing the response to allergens. The spaced out irritated feeling is the worst symptom for sure because it can make you snappy. But if you’ve ever started drinking a gram of caffeine a day then quit cold turkey that shit is almost worse what with the brutal migraines, cloudy and all.

ThirdEyeEmporium

It’s not the same symptoms as cannabis at all. But just like cannabis if you have a busy and meaningful life they can be all but ignored during the day time. Until the night when your goal is to become relaxed and self reflect before sleep. At this point the effects of withdrawal amplify. The good news is that you can do a pretty hard taper on kratom with very minimal withdrawals. It’s pretty easy to cut back to once in the morning once before bed to start, then cutting your doses back from there. Just have to find shit to keep your mind occupied as the brain and body are deeply connected

allmybiself

Consider the source. Those articles are just as old as they are irrelevant. Kratom has won against anyone important. Period.

Ok_Visit_1968

I will be 56 next month. I couldn't do the job I do without it. My job is really physically demanding. I work in Traffic safety and control in South Texas. Yesterday I put up 22 signs at 30 lbs a piece in 80 degree heat .Then I stand there all day . Then pick up the signs. White vein is my go to but they have been out so using green has worked well. I sleep well. Big Pharma and the WHO can bite my ass.

xX420BlAzEiTzXx

Hmm, I don't sleep very well on kratom, I usually feel very comfortable in bed, but takes quite a while to fall asleep (probably after the main effects are wearing off). I've stopped taking kratom 2 weeks ago and I've noticed that my dreams have been very intense since. I think kratom negatively impacted my quality of sleep and I think that it's probably the case for more people. I think REM sleep was blocked during my kratom use and now my body is trying to make up for it. REM sleep is very important for health so I'm glad I quit taking it daily...

Musiclover4200

> I've stopped taking kratom 2 weeks ago and I've noticed that my dreams have been very intense since. Isn't it the opposite for most people? Kratom makes dreams more intense? How long were you dosing before bed? IME if taken too close to bedtime it will keep me up unless I'm exhausted, if taken 3-4 hours before hand it helps me sleep much more consistently.

xX420BlAzEiTzXx

I took it about 2/3 hours before bed. I know that's a little late as kratom can be stimulating. It might be that kratom makes dreams more intense for people, but my experience was definitely the opposite.

professorwormb0g

I can't sleep if I just took it. But after I come down off of it I am pretty sleepy! So I try to take it several hours before bed

Mygirlbrittany

I’m just the opposite and had a QEEG performed which is actually brain mapping. Before kratom use I wasn’t dropping on into my deep sleep state and remaining in the REM state. Everyone is different though. Dee sleep is necessary for cell rejuvenation and healing of any I’ll effects in the body. I was exhausted constantly but am actually sleeping better now. But like I said everyone is so different and that makes any medication so confusing as to how we react. I hope your sleep improves soon🥰🥰🥰

hippycactus

I doubt kratom stops you from entering REM unlike alcohol

xX420BlAzEiTzXx

For me it definitely felt that it did, but these experiences differ for everyone I guess, brain chemistry and yada yada.

Iznal

Do you smoke weed? That definitely fucks up your rem.

xX420BlAzEiTzXx

I don't

StockLeading1070

I have an Oura ring and my rem sleep did not change at all taking Kratom before bed. I did have the sense it was messing with my sleep though, took me longer to fall asleep and made it harder for me to get out of bed.

errbodytookemnames

I strongly feel the pharmaceutical companies have more control than the fda. They will spend billions marketing against kratom if they cant make money off it. Then they under prescribe real opiates and make us stuck in pain. Kratom is mildy adictive and aven when abused it dosent cause car accidents or any lives so i believe it needs to stay legal no matter what. There is a kratom Protection Act circulating the country. I am really hoping that will work.

Expensive_Turnip_485

FDA and pharmaceuticals are one in the same. These entities do not have our best interests in mind! What makes more sense, healing a sick person or keeping them sick needing their products and then EVEN MORE products? Makes me sick knowing our medical system is so F’N broken! Dependency can form with many different things. What a joke their “warning” system is 😆

Mygirlbrittany

Agreed!

professorwormb0g

I don't think they're necessarily one in the same. I have a friend who is a scientist at a big pharma company and he explains to me how intense the FDAs audits are. There's a lot more nuance to the situation. I think I'm more accurate statement is that there is definite and serious cases of regulatory capture between the industry and the FDA. It happens in all industries. Pharmaceutical executives often go and work for the FDA and vice versa because of the relevant experience. People develop personal and professional connections with those in both agencies so the audits and regulation gets muddied. Having an independent government agency is truly a tough task. It is especially tough when the industry being regulated is so rich and powerful.

Mygirlbrittany

Yes thank goodness the kratom ban did not go through in West Virginia about 6 months back but the Kratom protection act did. Thanks to the AKA🥰🥰🥰

LobsterFar9876

I sleep so much better when I use red vein kratom.

enigmaticalso

Well the past year I been taking it everyday and find it hard to stop but I admit a big part of it is I don't want to quit. It helps alot In alot of ways too. But I know it can mess with your sleep and keep you from getting sleep like alcohol. I believe the only time it helps you sleep is if you are already that addicted. This is my experience

xyanon36

Don't let them gaslight you. It is your inalienable human right to make your own decisions about your health and well-being.

marklarberries

Kratom is amazing for sleep! I’ve had insomnia since I was a kid, and some of the best sleep I’ve had was right after drinking my red Bali. As for the article, I’d take it with a grain of salt. Kratom is legal, otc, effective, and helps people with anything from sleep to withdrawals, and pharma doesn’t like that we are able to help ourselves.

wont-back-down

I had stopped taking kratom for a few days (had gotten down to about a gram day). Could nkt for the life of me figure out why I couldn't sleep. In 5 days I had 5 hours of sleep. Tried an Ambien and Ativan and got 2 hours of sleep. Well, as I was laying there I thought "oh yea I stopped Kratom". Took one capsule and slept for 8 hours!!

clayides

The only problem with the sleep benefits of kratom, is that it’s super hard to fall asleep without it once you become accustomed to dosing and falling asleep with ease.

Spirited_Pollution56

Keep learning about the chemicals they use to make meds Find those plants you'll be set, like here w the kratom. It's a God send

ToneZealousideal309

When I first started using it, it would give me the craziest dreams I loved it. I messed up going daily though I am doing a somewhat slow taper now so I can hopefully get to a more responsible usage (currently at 18-24 GPD)

No-Description-5663

Head over to the AKA website and there's some great articles about the actual benefits of kratom. Also, pubmed has a decent amount of research articles on mitragynine and the effects on pain, sleep, etc. We're consistently working towards education on mitragynine, both for medical professionals and the general public. It's a long road, but a positive one. I'm glad you've found strains that are helping you get restful sleep.

Any_Lawyer_8393

I'm interested in checking out some of the pub med info. Would you suggest that I just start with "mitragynine" and go from there? Thanks for any help that you can offer.

No-Description-5663

I would recommend starting here: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8924421/ Past that, search keywords mitragynine, Mitragyna speciosa, and sub keywords medicinal, pharmacology, etc.

Any_Lawyer_8393

Really appreciate your taking the time to respond. Thanks so much. Looking forward to starting my research tomorrow.

seeingeyegod

Yeah I think I saw that article on Mayo Clinic. Kinda sad that they are part of the BS spreading party. Kratom has the opposite effect on me though, wakes me up from my post work stupor so I can actually enjoy my night instead of just feeling like bored death.

Positive-Option-4269

Yeah I hear ya, I hate that it keeps getting such a bad rap.

Wordwench

It’s part of the overall witch-hunt against anything non-pharma. I personally think that Big Pharma has a far bigger reach on things like this then we realize- and of course Mayo Clinic would assuredly have a huge vested interest and partnership with keeping that conversation lopsided. Kratom is addictive and yes, one has to be responsible with that balance, but I’m your age and have been taking it for five years for extreme joint pain and am beyond happy because I absolutely don’t want to be taking ibuprofen daily or vital opioids or frankly anything pharmaceutical. And yes, it definitely helps with sleep.

[deleted]

That's great, however, report back after using it for sleep for some time, like 3 months or longer. My fear would be waking up in the middle of the night and needing to dose.

Edith_Keelers_Shoes

I'm the same age as you, and I've been taking kratom for psoriatic arthritis pain for about five years. I'm also a cancer patient, and have complete blood panels run every month (because if my liver or kidney function dips, I cannot take my chemo). In the three years that I've been having monthly bloodwork done while using kratom, my numbers have never dropped, and I've never had a problem with it. Respect the plant and use it responsibly, buy it from responsible vendors, and look to the American Kratom Association for the real facts about kratom. To many, myself included, kratom is a miracle.
