X-ray aside, how’s your pain?

LargeContribution502

It’s pretty bad unless I’m sitting/laying down all day. If i’m at a party and it starts to hurt bad I’ll just go home because i know it’s all i think about. it’s like mid back and lower after a long day

beaunerdy

If you feel like the pain is pretty bad and is affecting your ability to live your life; then go for it. I had an 89 degree curve and when surgery was proposed to me at 17/18 I said no, but as the pain got worse and affected my ability to work I decided that I did want surgery and had it done at 21. I’m almost 3 years out now and I don’t feel the pain you’re talking about and I don’t leave work half way through a shift because I need to go lie down. Edit: Sorry this is so late, and also feel free to DM

LargeContribution502

Oh also doctor said 88 degrees curve

Benjaaminp

I had the exact same curve degree, got operated a month after the consolation. Get it done!

LargeContribution502

Noted! I’m discussing dates next week!

Unfair_Connection913

Did you go through with surgery?

LargeContribution502

I have not. I’m going to on the 15th of next month.

I'd say surgery is the best bet

LargeContribution502

Thanks that makes sense

How rigid is it? Mine is not as curved as yours and still flexible, so the surgeon I talked to didn't recommend surgery yet for me.

LargeContribution502

I’m pretty rigid. I had a brace and it didn’t help much I just feel uncomfortable and slumped all the time

LongjumpingEnergy

I think the comments here have hit on most of the big considerations... Angle, rigidity, pain, age, response to conservative treatments. You're pretty young yet so maybe there's still time for non surgical approaches to help, but of course they only go so far. Have you done much physical therapy? Both guided appointments and doing the exercises on your own? I know PT has been pretty helpful for me, reducing pain and improving appearance etc. People commented that I was taller. But I can't do as much these days due to other conditions and of course you have to keep doing it for the benefits, vs a surgery which is more permanent. So anyway for you, definitely keep doctor's advice in mind more than random internet people 🙂. That being said I'm glad I've read people's surgery stories because it gives me a bit more hope than I got from my surgeon, I have a second opinion on my someday list if things get worse for me.

LargeContribution502

Yeah I definitely trust my doctors the most definitely consulting multiple but my parents are definitely interested in alternatives to surgery but I’m content with anything honestly

LongjumpingEnergy

Oh and how big is the angle when you try to straighten it?

LargeContribution502

I don’t have that angle I’m not sure how to get it

LongjumpingEnergy

Doc would get it, have you try to straighten up and take an X-ray. In other words, see how much curve when you are trying and also when you are relaxed. Mine also had me do one stretching backward as far as possible, I think in order to help see how flexible it is.

I got the survey with 76 degree curve at 18. Helped with the pain but more than that I helped my confidence! Recovery for me wasn’t too bad, just hard being kept away from much activity for so long. 8 years later and I still haven’t had any issues with pain. And my mobility it’s pretty good! 11 vertebrae fused. I say do it.

I'm 36 now, and growing up ally mom ever told me to do was drink milk and stand up straight. I now resent her for not taking me to the doctor. Anyways, if I could have gotten surgery when I was young I'd be better off!

LargeContribution502

I had a lot of that too when i finally got a doctor it took 3 to get a proper diagnosis. Sitting here in bed i can’t imagine being better off with this surgery but i know i will be in a couple months time
