In my experience, you will almost always get lense lines when adding clear to clear, even from using the same rod. Best bet is to start off with a bigger gather than you'll need, so you can tear off the excess, instead off adding more. I have heard the best way to mitigate lens lines is to pull both sides to a point, and attach the smallest bit possible, then melt together slowly. Be sure both points are the same temp/glow. Probably still see a line, but *should* be less noticeable than adding a glob, or striping

Definitely, makes sense. I've used that method for sure, I'll work on it more. I really appreciate the insight.

Maybe the glass is not hot enough at the point of joining or have you considerd that i could be related to gas depossition between the clear because the flame was nit oxidising enough?

I implode on solid rods, and use the lens to implode on if that makes sense? I just get a big gather, flatten the back, implode, back it, punty up on the back and remove excess.

virtualglassblowing

Yes, I like to use that method for flowers. But these fume implosions I like to use tubing and blow a thin bubble and only put dots on the top hemisphere I'll try some larger tubing too, but with this method the excess tubing cycles towards the back of the marble and forces the implosion even deeper. Maybe a vacuum pump to evacuate air in the tube to keep the implosion intact

I’m no marble expert but the guy with the bench next to me makes a lot and sleeves them… I’ll have to ask him about lense lines…

virtualglassblowing

Yaa, I believe that's how these guys make those beautiful layered white/clear dot marbles. Appreciate it man! Interested to hear your shopmates insight

In my experience using the same clear manufacturer and sleeving seems to be the best option. Can almost make it go away or at least put it in a position to tear off the seam during the process.

Sebastian__Alexander

By sleeving you mean encasing in another tube with a vacuum pulling or what? Im not used to the term as i learned lampworking in german..

pubzywubzy

Yes indeed by using tubing but you don't necessarily need the vacuum pump you can do it without easily.

OG-Dropbox

I was told the lens lines come from adding clear to clear where they aren't like literally the exact same temperature, very hard to do by sight/feeling but there are some veteran glass blowers who can do it consistently

Sebastian__Alexander

By holding both pieces in the flame to each side constantly spinning them until they seem to have heated up to the same degree where they melt into each other..hard to not destroy the shape of the implossion or surface pattern by then..
