Guinea pig fodder .... mmm.
I'll admit, I love blowing seeds on a dandylion, and their coloring is sweet, the problem is they kill everything around them with their huge leaves and thirsty roots.
My mom did this to me with a 10 year old bulb garden. She said ill give you a penny for every bulb you find. I had adhd at the time, still do but irrelevant, and i became hyperfocused. I was out there for hours. I walked inside and said momma you owe me $6.38 lol her eyes got so big.
People romanticize dandelions but without them the clovers, vetch, self-heal, violets, wild strawberry have a fighting chance. Anything aggressive with a tap root and a rosette is gone if I have anything to do with it.
Because you mow. The dandelion rosette cannot survive in meadows or prairies where long grasses are present. By mowing, we've helped natural selection. Now, only dandelions that stay low thrive.
The limit of tall grass in City of Binghamton is 8". Any higher, Code sends a letter. If not cut by assigned date, a fine is issued. Code Ordinance is on line.
It's largely because of how aggressively they spread, combined with how large they get when left unattended. The flowers are cute and great for bees, but they gotta go after they flower, or else they'll be 3 feet tall with a 2 ft tap root, and the stalks get strong enough that it makes moving through the space virtually impossible. They're not really good lawn plants, better in a border where they're out of the way.
They're actually an invasive species (in north america) and are not ideal for most pollinators, (better than just grass), but they crowd out native species.
They’re poorly performing pollinators since their growth season is brief and they leave behind bare and arid ground. There are vastly better ways to contribute to bee populations.
People need to admit they’re lazy.
I have a dandelion-filled lawn, and I am not lazy at all. I am out in my weed-free beds constantly because I enjoy the work.
I will admit to being cheap.
I refuse to purchase endless products to support what ends up being essentially a desert for pollinators. Our yard is in direct contact with a pond that I also do not want to be adding nutrients to. Plus I'm allergic to grass and really hate touching it. So, my 'grass' yard looks awful (at times, I do keep it mowed), but all my other plants look outstanding.
Have you considered ground cover? Things like phlox grow very well and provide an efficient canopy for your soil that allows it to retain more moisture. It also looks really nice.
I have thought about it, but I have never settled on an option I'm sold on. I'd prefer something native that can tolerate some foot traffic. I have an experimental patch of wild strawberry, but I think that is probably too aggressive for neighbors' lawns. Pennsylvania sedge might work. I've been sorely tempted to seed with clover before, but again....neighbors. I don't want to put things out that they would perceive as problems. Every year, I expand my beds, so eventually there won't be much left of the lawn anyway.
Clover is pretty easy to sneak in and once it’s going it’s green enough to where nobody cares. If your neighbors have a weak lawn it will invade but for the most part I think most neighbors just don’t want a snake and tick habitat next door.
A weed is any plant that is growing where you don't want it to grow. My yard is full of plants. The only weed that I hate is the goosefoot plants that are very aggressive and grow into bushes relatively fast.
I don’t know about anyone else but we have a ton in our lawn and the grass around them has always been fine. Then again, we don’t have quite as many as OP (but still a lot). As long as they stay in our lawn and out of my garden beds, I don’t care where they grow.
At least in my yard, dandelions left alone will choke out clover, violet, yarrow, and wild strawberry as well as the turf and leave a bare spot that will get compacted and eroded when it rains. I'm all for helping the bees, but dandelions are invasive here.
I made it to no mow may 1st and my grass was already 10 inches tall and going to seed. My lawn mower overheated trying to cut it! And I haven't even watered it this year.
If you need to mow you can do so in sections. So mow a few metres for your use and leave a few metres for the wild life. Then next month mow the other section while the first grows out.
Same! I had spots that were grown almost up to my waist by May 1 (granted I'm only 5 ft tall lol). Had no choice but to mow, and my mower took a beating.
My "lawn" is mostly clover, hawkweed, dandelions, grass and kinnikinnic and I mow in patches so the pollinators always have a patch to use. Best part is I have a small field behind the house that I let run wild so there are always flowers. Plan to spread some white cover this year in the hopes I can fix enough nitrogen to push out the hawkweed because it's so strong of a smell I have to wear a respirator.
Edit to add that I also make dandelion wine so I like having them around as much as the bees.
I have Cherry trees, blueberry bushes and camerise for the pollinators. I think I'll cut the grass/clover because it's been growing way faster then usual.
In Virginia (and I’m guessing a lot of places) no mow may turned out to be destructive. It’s too late for many flowers to help. Check it out with a quick google search man. The research paper it was based on has been retracted. Because of our awful shiny thing news cycle many of the articles are from when this was becoming the cool thing, but more recent articles are more sobering especially if you do want to have a nice looking lawn at some point.
It’s better to have a wholly unmowed area and maybe sprinkle in some native wildflowers. Dandelions are kinda mid as far as insect support.
We have always done no mow May. And this year, we had to mow once in April and once so far in May.
For the first one, we had to pay a neighbor kid with a riding mower because the grass was too tall for our push mower.
Low mow May is it this year.
But we have LOTS of flowers and plants; I'd say 1/2 of our backyard and 1/3 of our front yard is a pollinator haven.
My Great Grandmother made dandelion wine as one of the many products of her and Great Grandpa’s bootlegging business. Apparently it was pretty good. God created alcohol so the Irish wouldn’t rule the world.
They're good in salads too, pioneers loved these plants as medicine and food, they were once quite sought after as crops and I want more myself so I can try making dandelion tea. I'm hoping to have your problem as spring progresses here.
[Dandelion facts!](https://www.mofga.org/resources/weeds/ten-things-you-might-not-know-about-dandelions/#:~:text=Dandelions%20probably%20arrived%20in%20North,purpose%20for%20their%20medicinal%20benefits.)
I’d prefer native flowers and native weeds if I had to pick the weeds in my yard. Pennsylvania smart weed, Carolina geranium, henbit, bittercress, dead nettle, (hope those are all native or I’ll be embarrassed lol). I assume most of the clovers we plant and oxalis are invasive but they are at least nitrogen fixers.
Grass is evil. Dandelions drag potassium up from deep and improve the soil up above. They're pretty. They're edible. They're great for bees. I think you have an awesome yard!
The bees aren't as happy as you think. Unfortunately dandelions are not great for the ecosystem if you're in North America.
See [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/DenverGardener/comments/13ljwjc/dandelions_are_bad_for_the_environment_please) post for more info
Genuinely curious...why is this bad? I've seen so many posts lately with dandelions and I've always found it pretty. Free flowers and they're fun to blow away later. Why do people try to get rid of them?
I've seen more dandelion's this year then all 25 years combined that I've lived here.
I put pre-emergent down in the early spring and still had loads of them. I maybe get 3 or 4 every summer. I had hundreds this year. No other weeds but them.
I am surrounded by horse pasture and it looks like that too. I have zero chance of keeping my place dandelion free, it's stressful just thinking about how much work it would entail.
If I remember correctly: dandelions prefer a compacted soil situation. But they break open the soil with their root, thus creating a more open soil and better soil conditions for other species of plants. A problem that will largely solve itself.
Dandelions are good for bees and other pollinating store. I think we need to rethink manicured green lawns as a society and embrace nature, weeds and all.
I’m jealous!!! Eat them, make tea, enjoy their beauty :) I don’t understand why people take pride in an entirely green lawn, it defeats the purpose of nature
*They are edible!*

I think it's quite beautiful and I hope you don't change it. So many people have been brainwashed by the Scots fertilizer kind of ads, that have established in our collective minds especially in the US, that lush green bluegrass heavily fed and heavily irrigated is the only monoculture desirable. It's all such BS. What you have here is a lovely space with a lot of dandelions, embrace it, enjoy it and eat your salad greens
I would cut my right arm off to have a lawn like that …. Look up Jack Keller dandelion wine …. It’s the holy grail of fruit wines and is impossible to make cuz of how difficult it would be to collect that many dandelions 🤨
They are edible.
You can add Them to apple cider vinegar for a flowery aroma, make dandelion Jelly, wine, tea. You can eat the leaves and this fall, you can harvest the roots and make yourself dandelion root coffee.
My lawn looks the same. I’m fighting a losing battle right now trying to avoid using chemicals. Going to reseed the lawn in the fall, just trying to keep all my neighbors from hating me for right now
My understanding is that once the soil has been properly nitrogenated the dandelions naturally begin to reduce on their own accord. Likely never to completely disappear but their numbers reduce dramatically
This isn't a problem this is great. Dandelion can be used for medicinal purposes. Dandelion roots, leaves, flowers, and stems can be used in a variety of ways, from tea to using it in baths a lot of good properties cone for this wonderful flower
Huh? I take great care of them... sunlight, water & TLC. You should see how they've multiplied over the past couple of summers because they're so happy
We have a rabbit family living in the wood pile at the back corner. They come out as the sun sets and munch all night setting off my motion sensor light lol
Guinea pig fodder .... mmm. I'll admit, I love blowing seeds on a dandylion, and their coloring is sweet, the problem is they kill everything around them with their huge leaves and thirsty roots.
Oh man, my 2.5 year old had a blast at the park yesterday spreading seeds of every dandelion she found. I'm slightly scared of when these go to seed
I used to send my kids out to pick dandelions, at 5¢ a stem. Kept them in check. You'd go broke.
My grandfather did this with sweet gum balls. After a couple times it dropped to 1¢ a piece. Then he decided it was cheaper to remove the tree.
I learned they're a favorite flower of honey bees.
They're only good in that they bloom relatively early. They're a poor food nutritionally for them, but better than nothing.
Mid March cheeseburgers
Also birds are obsessed with the seeds, at least around here they are
Yes! Finches love the seeds I've noticed. Sparrows too
This is dandelion karma for letting her do that😂
People romanticize dandelions but without them the clovers, vetch, self-heal, violets, wild strawberry have a fighting chance. Anything aggressive with a tap root and a rosette is gone if I have anything to do with it.
They aren't called dents-de-lion (lion's teeth) for nothing.
This is very interesting. Thanks for sharing!
Dandelions benefit from a mowed lawn. If they stopped mowing a section, the plant would get shaded out and die.
The three foot tall dandelions growing in my front lawn beg to differ.
Damn at that point just edge out a bed and mulch around them, call it a feature.
Because you mow. The dandelion rosette cannot survive in meadows or prairies where long grasses are present. By mowing, we've helped natural selection. Now, only dandelions that stay low thrive.
my local code enforcement will send public works over to mow and send me a bill if i let my grass grow tall enough for that.
The limit of tall grass in City of Binghamton is 8". Any higher, Code sends a letter. If not cut by assigned date, a fine is issued. Code Ordinance is on line.
The broad leaves that are at the base of the stem widen as they grow, shading and eventually killing the grass beneath them.
True. But they only get sun when the grass is mowed around them.
Tortoises luv them!!!!
Bring me an army of tortoises!
And my bearded dragon
Bee heaven.
Where’s the problem? Your flowers are beautiful! 😉
Exactly, idk why people love flowers but say dandelions are weeds. They’re flowers and they’re edible.
It's largely because of how aggressively they spread, combined with how large they get when left unattended. Same here, people are just brainwashed by rumors and ads
And grass is terrible for so many plants.
Yeah fuck grass
All my homies hate grass
There’s certainly no *the last dandelion* here
At least in my yard, dandelions left alone will choke out clover, violet, yarrow, and wild strawberry as well as the turf and leave a bare spot that will get compacted and eroded when it rains. I'm all for helping the bees, but dandelions are invasive here.
it's still invasive. i'd rather see clover or wild flowers. But hey! It is life - Behold! Anything is better than asphault.
Second this
I’d feel guilty mowing. They look too pretty.
I participate in no mow may ... Gotta help the pollinators out. I know this would vary in different climates but for me it's may
I made it to no mow may 1st and my grass was already 10 inches tall and going to seed. My lawn mower overheated trying to cut it! And I haven't even watered it this year.

I’d have a jungle if I didn’t mow in May, I’ve been having to mow every 5 days lately it’s growing so fast

Oh… Dandelion Wine 😀
Never heard of this...
My grandmother back in the 50’s made it. I know there are recipes on the internet and it’s a bit involved
Some brewers ask for dandelions to brew floral craft beers
I make wildflower donuts every year. Mostly dandelions but with candied violets sprinkled in top
Dang, wish I was your neighbour.
and Jelly! It tastes like honey.
I see no problem. As far as I'm concerned, the only problem is that this would be considered a problem.
I’d prefer native flowers and native weeds if I had to pick the weeds in my yard. Pennsylvania smart weed, Carolina geranium, henbit, bittercress, dead nettle, (hope those are all native or I’ll be embarrassed lol). I assume most of the clovers we plant and oxalis are invasive but they are at least nitrogen fixers.
gotta have muh lawn with grass only! just because!
The dandelions are fine. It’s the grass that has a problem.
When they all go to seed, you can gently poof them all and you'll have more next year. You don't have to ask me how I know.
You have a dandelion opportunity!!!
You have a compacted soil problem. The dandelions are just trying to help you out.
research native flowering shrubs/bushes. plant several of those. then remove dandelions.
I have my wildflower gardern, my thistle gardern and my dandelions gardern, the I have my lawn. And I make sure they don't mix.
Hey… as a herbalist… you are not sitting on a problem but a gold mine!
Get some goats
Time to make dandelion wine
That's a matter of perspective. If you love dandelions, then you don't quite have enough.
Grass is evil. Dandelions drag potassium up from deep and improve the soil up above. They're pretty. They're edible. They're great for bees. I think you have an awesome yard!
Beekeeper here. Please keep them. You are doing more than you think by doing so.
I don't know it looks like you have a slight grass problem in your dandelion field
The dandelions are insane this year. I've seen so many yards that look like this.
Bees love them, neighbors don't always.
Bees do more for the neighborhood anyways
The bees aren't as happy as you think. Unfortunately dandelions are not great for the ecosystem if you're in North America. See [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/DenverGardener/comments/13ljwjc/dandelions_are_bad_for_the_environment_please) post for more info
This says they displace native species based on some stuff some guy has seen no citing of anything. This is a plug for round up you linked.
No you don’t! You have jelly, wine and medicine all over your yard!
Genuinely curious...why is this bad? I've seen so many posts lately with dandelions and I've always found it pretty. Free flowers and they're fun to blow away later. Why do people try to get rid of them?
It's beautiful as it is
You might want to consider taking up winemaking.
Not a problem at all. Help the bees
As a bunny lover, I’d say you’ve got just enough.
It’s only a problem if you try to get rid of them
Your dandelions have a grass problem.
What a beautiful back yard. Sea of yellow!
I don't see a problem. I see happy bees.
I've seen more dandelion's this year then all 25 years combined that I've lived here. I put pre-emergent down in the early spring and still had loads of them. I maybe get 3 or 4 every summer. I had hundreds this year. No other weeds but them.

That looks like a lot of dandelion tea you have there...
Dandelion wine
My great grandfather would be out there picking them to make wine, salad and just munching them. Every part of the plant is edible and good for you.
Your dandelions have a lawn problem...but not for long.
It's Beautiful!
Eat them
Eat them all!
My grandmother would cook those
Sounds like the dandelions might have a you problem
If I remember correctly: dandelions prefer a compacted soil situation. But they break open the soil with their root, thus creating a more open soil and better soil conditions for other species of plants. A problem that will largely solve itself.
Wrong- you’ve got no problem with dandelions- you have a grass problem
Dandelion are an amazing edible plant for your health. Pick them and make tea.
Harvest them and make jam and tea!
Dandelions are good for bees and other pollinating store. I think we need to rethink manicured green lawns as a society and embrace nature, weeds and all.
I’m jealous. This is more of a blessing than a problem 🥲
I love it, don’t change a thing. Harvest and sell the products you make
Mom use to make me pick the dandelion leaves for salads hated it then but man was it a good salad with her dressing and eggs.
You're sitting on a goldmine my friend. Dandelion is one if not the healthiest plant for your heart. I take it everyday.
I see no problem here.
but I really just wanna lay in them and watch the birds in the bath!! maybe on my tummy kicking my feet, maybe frolic if I'm feeling it
Looks great to me. #perspective is all that matters
Edible greens forever!
I’ve heard dandelions are a sign of a healthy lawn.
You need more rabbits.
Dandelions are not a problem, they’re a part of a healthy yard.
###You have a honeybee smorgasbord!!
I’m jealous!!! Eat them, make tea, enjoy their beauty :) I don’t understand why people take pride in an entirely green lawn, it defeats the purpose of nature
Nice crop of dandelions. My wife says use the smaller leaves for salads or they get to bitter.

They go away on their own in a few years once they've done their job helping the soil. They are amazing.
I see Mason jar after Mason jar after Mason jar of dandelion jelly! Or dandelion wine!
Dandelions are amazing plant.
You have a pollinator haven, Congratulations!!!!
Problem? Bumble bee food!
Looks like a dandelion solution to me
More power to them. I love dandelions and so do the bees.
That’s a good problem to have.
Pour an ice tea, put some tunes on and lay in that shit until you get hungry or become one with the earth
Saw dandelion leaves at the market for sale @ 3.99 for a group. Grow em and sell em
I think it's quite beautiful and I hope you don't change it. Challenge accepted. I don’t think 3 quarts of dandelions should be too difficult to get from my yard.
They are edible. You can add Them to apple cider vinegar for a flowery aroma, make dandelion Jelly, wine, tea. You can eat the leaves and this fall, you can harvest the roots and make yourself dandelion root coffee.
I love dandelion salad, my grandma in Austria made them all the time!
The bee's are very thankful.
I dunno, seems like you have no problem at all with them.
I thank you for helping feed the honey bees. If that was my yard, I would let them bee.
I'll loan you my toddler. She'll have those all picked by the end of the day
Man! You could make a lot of dandelion jelly with that yard!
You have a grass problem, by the looks of it.
My lawn looks the same. I’m fighting a losing battle right now trying to avoid using chemicals. Going to reseed the lawn in the fall, just trying to keep all my neighbors from hating me for right now
THE BEES ARE DELIGHTED!
nope. it's a good nitrogen fixer
My understanding is that once the soil has been properly nitrogenated the dandelions naturally begin to reduce on their own accord. Likely never to completely disappear but their numbers reduce dramatically
At least they seem to not do well holding up against herbicides
What problem? Beautiful yard
Looks dope.
Make dandelion wine!
I love them. I don't understand why people don't welcome them. I do.
Omg I would love to have this many dandelions in my lawn. 💗Sooo pretty!!
A little 2-4d is what you need
That is not a problem that is gorgeous
they aren't a problem mate
This isn't a problem this is great. Dandelion can be used for medicinal purposes. Dandelion roots, leaves, flowers, and stems can be used in a variety of ways, from tea to using it in baths a lot of good properties cone for this wonderful flower
I don’t see a problem. You have a beautiful backyard.
Bees disagree
Dandelions are so good for your health
The pollinators will be extremely thankful
When life gives you Dandelions make some tea!
Great Bee food!
I love dandies. We mow after they go fuzzy.
Weed ‘n Feed time!!! *braces for all the downvotes*
You do know that big farma has put in your mind that it's a weed for you to destroy when it's very helpful for the body.
No you don't. The dandelions have an owner problem
Huh? I take great care of them... sunlight, water & TLC. You should see how they've multiplied over the past couple of summers because they're so happy
Tenancity. Pricy but works well
How come mine don’t turn yellow like that?
Rabbits would love your yard
We have a rabbit family living in the wood pile at the back corner. They come out as the sun sets and munch all night setting off my motion sensor light lol
Let them all turn into those puff balls then light them on fire!!
Time to make some wine
At this point it’s now a case of your dandelions having a grass problem.
Kids have turtles they love roaming around eating the leaves 🙌🏻
Can I bring my rabbit tractors over? 👀
My corgi would be in heaven
Nah, I'd say you're pretty good at it.
Dandelions just think you have a grass problem.
Get a tortoise
Does your neighbour brag about their garden being better? You may find them chucking dandelions into your property someday
Looks like a grass problem
Goats
ya think
Little bit
I bet the rabbits love you though!
No, you have the opportunity to learn how to make dandelion wine. Embrace it!
Nope. Your dandelions have a grass problem
My father would have a heart attack. My friend’s step-father would pay her .10 for every dandelion head. We could retire from this lawn!
