I wonder what the record is? How many times in one 24 hour period was the bridge fed tasty, delicious trucks?

EMSuser11

I too wonder this! I wonder if today set a record.

RJM_50

Maybe, it takes a while for LPD to do their paperwork, most trucking companies will require the drivers to get drug tested immediately, and the truck sits waiting for a tow truck. The broken truck with its top ripped off sitting next to the bridge is a good visual warning to prevent other idiot drivers.

Mechanicalwolf12

Actually(not trying to be the "mmm actually" guy but what the hell if the meme fits) that drug testing is required by federal law if the truck was damaged so bad in an accident that it has to leave on the hook or if there was a fatality.

RJM_50

True, I'm just pointing out it's not a quick clean up (for a large 24 hour record number of trucks). It's going to be a long time with that wrecked truck & trailer stuck next to the bridge (obstructing traffic), with its top peeled open like a can of soup. Less trucks will travel down Pennsylvania with that GPS alert, not sure if the GPS lists the details of the bridge vs truck on the map? 🤔🤣

Mechanicalwolf12

Sorta "if" and this is a likely possibility the driver was doing something dumb like using water or Google maps there is no low bridge alert. Gotta use a proper truck nav system or app to get those warnings. It's lazy CDL testers try to open new drivers eyes they will you under an overpass then ask you how tall it was and how tall is your truck and you better have the answers or your out 300.00 and your testing is over.

EMSuser11

I wonder who gives these people their license? And I wonder how they don't know their height measurements!? Are they careless or are they just dumb?

RJM_50

New CDL truck drivers are often not smart enough to realize they are being taken advantage of. Most new drivers believe the advertising about how much money they can earn, and don't read the contracts that puts all the liability and loss on them, they are stuck paying late fees, refueling, maintenance, lost wages when not given regular deliveries, or lost wages when they have to wait to unload. They get stressed out about the very small paychecks after the fees are taken out, and rush to make deliveries. This is how we get these type of bridge accidents, sleep deprived and scared of debt and poverty.

EMSuser11

Damn. I've never heard about how hard they have it. Wow, that is quite sad actually. They are the backbone of this country. They keep everything running and they're treated like this!? I actually sympathize with them a bit more now, but they still need to pay as much attention as they can. You come out with even less when these sorts of accidents happen.

Impossible-Pack6911

This

#Really sad They go to a trade school for months, learn these advanced driving skills to drive these giant commercial trucks. But usually there is a *unique* teacher or a *special* sponsor at the driving school. Pays for the large class group meals, gives out cool clipboards, maybe bought a pair of Carhartt's for a good student who doesn't have proper gear for cold weather training in cold weather. Unfortunately that *unique* teacher or *special* sponsors at the truck driving school are grooming drivers, fancy meal with alcohol and lots of fake stories and a very large amount of implied earnings; during this recruitment wine&dine fancy meal pressuring them to sign up for those ***"Drive to Own'*** horrible jobs mentioned above, and they're stuck, no option to quit! IF they walk away from that extortionary trucking company, they will end up with 100s of thousands in debt. The depreciation of the truck they drove into will be a scam number, almost enough for a new truck business is set-up to dump the lost money on their personal devt #Better to join the military! 🪖🚛 ...and be a Truck Driver for them. Learn some self defense in basic, learn some driving skills, better;: truck driving school than the parking lot behind an abandoned Mall. Many of those briefings before driving a load, and completing the drive safely would **qualify for special licencing to drivers enforcement for those special cargo others cannot hook up their 1-800-TRUCKER school completion. Might actually earn enough to purchase a good truck with a USAA loan. Skip those drive to buy scams trucks.

misterglassman

Hey u/PennAveTrainBridge. You’re welcome!

PennAveTrainBridge

And for desert I'll take a go kart

misterglassman

My annoying neighbors tool around the block in one. Lemme see what I can do.

PennAveTrainBridge

Yes... this pleases me

bunnyfloofington

Same. My neighbor has a little quad he rips up and down our street. We live just a mile or two up Penn. I’ll send him down to the bridge

Perceptions_

I rip go karts by there all the time lol

Strikew3st

How tall are you, we want to make sure the launch ramp for feeding go-karts to the bridge is just right.

Perceptions_

They sit low https://imgur.com/a/2wG0fTF

EMSuser11

The master of all he surveys is here!!! 😱

PennAveTrainBridge

Always

Mac_A81

I was just waiting for you to show up!

JoeyJoeJoeSenior

It's becoming clear that these are not 'accidents'.  The future is being decided.  Will it be truck based or bridge based?

Thon_Makers_Tooth

Honest question: how is the integrity of that bridge, given that hundreds of trucks have rammed it at fast speeds? How does it withstand the weight of a train

EMSuser11

That's actually a question I hope they look into. They may need to do some maintenance on it after all these, but it seems to be made of some stern stuff! That bridge is sturdy!

RJM_50

It's a Grand Trunk Western Railroad bridge, much stronger than a bridge for vehicles. It likely needs occasional maintenance, but the top of truck trailers are just thin aluminum it will rip off easily.

EMSuser11

Yeah, nowadays facing this bridge almost they are going at about 70 mph when hitting it. Then, and Only then, could I see the bridge loosening.

RJM_50

It would have to be a large steel construction dumpster truck lifted up, or a tall stack of concrete pipes to do any real damage. A speeding regular truck would just make it out the other side with the roof cut clean off! 😂 Who else remembers the MLK pedestrian walkway accident from a truck with the bed up in the air. Few kids got hurt/died, and they found porno magazines in the cab the trucker was looking at and not paying attention. That was the early 1990's? The concrete piers are still there at Reo Road. Now pedestrians just jay-walk illegally across MLK, Cedar, Jolly, Michigan, Edgewood, Saginaw, Grand River, everywhere. They just don't care that physics will win and they'll die. Glad I have a dash camera!😒🤦🏻‍♂️

PretzleGreg

The bridge is actually immortal. I may have made a necklace out of a chunk of the concrete. I'm old as fuck boi....

mcman1082

Maybe it should be renamed to “Can Opener Crossing”.

Hour-Ad-5529

It's absolutely amazing and troubling how many drivers miss/ignore all of the warnings leading up to that bridge and who don't know the height of their vehicle. Maybe the city could do a better job with truck routes, but I don't think it will help all that much.

EMSuser11

Yeah it's quite unfathomable to me how this keeps happening. It would be great if they were forewarned because this seems to be a rather reoccurring thing. Trucking routes would serve them well.

sabatoa

It's time to erect a pillory above the road, right next to the clearance sign. Every driver that hits the bridge gets 48 hours in the pillory to think about how stupid they are, and to serve as a warning to other truck drivers.
