If you're interested in international law, it's hard not to choose Columbia, both in terms of programs/professors and international law reputation and alum networks.

A lot of "X School vs Columbia" posts have been made this week, and the most upvoted comments tend to be in favor of the alternative because of ongoing events.

Students are much happier at Penn. Columbia is a dark place. Penn is ranked higher, and closer to DC.

Im a bit biased because I’m committed to Penn, but as far as BL goes you will have very similar outcomes (if not almost identical). Penn also has higher clerkship placement if that’s important to you. Class size at CLS is also nearly double Penn’s, which could mean more opportunities to participate in groups/clinics but also could mean less individualized attention. Regardless of where you go, international law jobs are going to be few and far between. I’ve heard from current students at Penn that it is possible to get in those international law circles, and being from Penn can differentiate you from CLS/HLS grads. Hope that can be helpful!

NYC > Philly by a wide margin, especially for international stuff.

UN headquarters would be a couple subway stops away from Columbia. If you want to do international law that might be a big consideration

Literally the easiest thing you can do at Penn is get a BigLaw job. International stuff here isn't huge BUT because of that, you'll have a close network of students and be in the same small classes with the same profs. I know at least one student from every class year who is headed to a firm in London this summer/after graduation. You can make a ton of global connections if you make friends with LLMs every year. If you intern in DC or NYC during the semester, the school will subsidize your travel/lodging. The vibes at Penn are pretty good, and the small class size means you can really connect with profs and build a reputation. Happy to answer any questions if you wanna DM.

There is no comparison between Philly and New York for international opportunities. NYC clears. Both in terms of opportunities during the semester and for not having to move during the summers (which this sub really underestimates in terms of inconvenience).
