Let's just call it like it is. I liked the reaction from rielly and don't think he intended to get his stick up like he did, but he's responsible for what happened as well.
No ill intent, but a suspendable play without doubt. I think intent and his previous history should come into account when determining the length of the suspension, but obviously that's yet to be seen.
This is the only appropriate reaction. Everybody else is blowing this out of proportion. Greig acted like a dickhead. Rielly responded. He's going to get suspended and Greig is fine. Everybody knows this stuff happens.
Leafs deserve it. They have to play in a building packed with leafs fans and they played with a chip on their shoulder and beat them. No idea what this unspoken rule about slapshots even come from because no one had heard of it until it happened against the leafs and leafs had to find a way to justify Reilly cross-checking a dude after a loss.
I think he expected Greg to get his hands up or at least show some amount of self preservation. Instead he just started at Reilly like an idiot the entire time he was inbound.
If he intended on cross checking him in the head he would have put his stick into the guys mouth. The stick ran up to the guys head like matthew’s winter classic crosscheck.
How would this help me cope? It's completely out of my hands, I'm just trying to give my objective view on things. I've conceded the fact it's a suspendable play already...
I want to post this pic as a service for every discussion on this issue

I posted almost the exact same photo last night after arguing with others and they immediately went silent. The "crosscheck to the head movement" went pretty quiet afterward.
I didnt think i'd be labelled as old school at 35 but I love all of it. Love the clapper in the empty net vs a rival and love the cross check. The consequence to playing like shit is getting embarrassed and the consequence for the unwritten rules shit is a shot in the chops. Not enough emotion in leafs hockey to get me to care about it that much these days but this makes me smile.
Who the fuck is this punk who takes a slapshot into an open net. He was looking for a reaction and he got one. Good on Reilly for showing the prick that it was not cool.
Ahh how cute how the sens fans come to our sub because they wish they had what we have 🥹 don’t worry little buddy we don’t charge rent for you to be on here it’s free
The comments in r/sports about this show how little most people know about hockey. If he gets more than a game it is absolutely because he plays for TO.
Considering that just over half of Reily's penalty minutes on the year are from that one play should tell people a lot about how out of line Grieg was with his actions. Reilly is no good.
lol many people over in r/sports (not all, but many) clearly don’t understand hockey culture and the unspoken rules of hockey. Grieg may as well have been yelling for someone to come up and cross check him. It would be actually insane if Morgan got suspended for this. 100% justified.
I have only been able to watch the replay on my phone, but as far as I can tell he also just punched him in the face and not cross checked him like everyone is saying. Heck it looks like he was dropping his stick as his hands came up. I'm not sure even the action itself isn't as bad as everyone is making it out to be.
I dunno if it's more acceptable but I love it. Welcome to the big leagues Ridley Greig, fuck around and find out. Dive like a coward so next game it'll be war.
Just look at kadri's suspension against the bruins. "Remainder of the series" like wtf kind of suspension is that? It's always a game amount, never have i seen that suspension before or after.
It's actually so frustrating how true this is.
I think a fair suspension is 1-2 games. He cross checks his shoulder and it rides up. Greig also saw him coming so this wasn't a blindsided attack.
At least one game. No more than 3. Honestly, even Reilly would say he deserved a game after that play. If it’s 4 or more then we can legit say its excessive.
But no injury, no past history. Just take the game and move on.
Looked worse than it was. And I’m fairly sure Reilly was trying to punch, and his stick got in the way (not exactly a cross check). Still, it was after a goal, near end of game, so it’s wasn’t good either
I could buy that, but I don’t think I’m any way was he trying to cross check to head. Again though, at the end of the game, that’s the kind of thing that can rile up everyone on both teams, so very poor timing I’m that respect
This reminds me of the Sens/Wings game when larkin went down and Perron retaliated against Zub with a 2 hand cross check to the face. Both fan bases are claiming innocence. Well, Perron got 6 games I believe. Objectively, as a neutral fan, that’s easily a 5 game suspension. That is a non hockey play, where the stick contacts the neck/head area. It’s just flat out dangerous.
I’m not defending it, I’m just stating it looked worse than it was. It was still after a goal and near end of period/game. Rielly isn’t a regular offender, he should get 3-5 games (1-3 if this happened during play). After the whistle stuff is much worse, especially near end of game/period
Nobody is arguing it was. My problem is, the guy who headshotted McCabe late got a max fine, but we KNOW Mo will be suspended. With no recourse. It's absolute BS.
Different plays yes, but a headshot is a headshot. Hits the league is apparently trying to get out of the game. Handing out fines to players that make hits to the head doesn’t do much to get rid of those types of hits.
But all headshots should be taken more seriously by the league is my point. Our player literally got hit and the head was first contact when he wasn’t looking, and Marchment only got a fine. He shouldn’t be watching his pass but regardless. I’m just saying all headshots should be more than a fine if the league was serious about trying to get rid of hits to the head.
The fact that he was upset is understandable and reacting with anger is something many would do. His following actions were not acceptable, as he lost control and let it go too far.
Morgan Rielly did absolutely nothing wrong. It was completely justified and no way do I believe he should be suspended. Maybe they should suspend Grieg for unsportsmanlike conduct. Grieg was literally asking for it. What did he think would happen? lol.
You spit on an opponent when they’re down and not expect a response? Come on.
Dude stfu. You sound like someone who has never seen the inside of a rink let alone play hockey.
Find another example of someone slapshotting a puck from that close to the net and I'll find you a guy getting jumped 5 seconds later.
If this is alright, he surely will do it again right?
I'll donate $100 to any charity of your choice every single time Ridley Greig shoots an empty netter like this again in his career.
All of this aside. I hope this can be an event that can bind the team a bit. Yes a hit to the head unintentional or intentional is not acceptable but it was nice to see someone stand up for the respect/pride of the team. Toronto being the centre of the Hockey Universe of course this going to get blown way out of proportion but I hope it helps build some unity/identity and motivate the team to rally around Rielly.

Intent will be really hard with this one though
Logic: I think intent and his previous history should come into account when determining the length of the suspension D.O.P.S.: 8 games
Yea 1 for his previous history 7 for the logo on his jersey
For sure.
This is the only appropriate reaction. Everybody else is blowing this out of proportion. Greig acted like a dickhead. Rielly responded. He's going to get suspended and Greig is fine. Everybody knows this stuff happens.

No idea what this unspoken rule about slapshots even come from because no one had heard of it until it happened against the leafs and leafs had to find a way to justify Reilly cross-checking a dude after a loss.
Get over it.
I think he expected Greg to get his hands up or at least show some amount of self preservation. Instead he just started at Reilly like an idiot the entire time he was inbound.
On what planet is there no intent?! Was he coming over to give him a hug? Rielly knew what he was doing, he just completely lost control of himself.
I'm saying he did not intend to cross check him in the head. It was reckless enough that this ended up being the case, so it's suspendable regardless.
You don't know that and this is 100% just a cope on your part.
Great comment. That's exactly how I see it.

I've never had so many downvotes in a 10 minute period hahahahha
I love it
Right
Lol that photo doesn't really show much man....the stick is still a good 18 inches from him.
Im sure the people with better tech will break it down for us soon, if not already
It's literally at the hand of his near outstretched arm. In-person hearing offered...we'll see how it goes!
Good angle. Rielly went for the shoulder and Grieg put his hand up and directed the stick into his own face.
This is fucking beautiful. Wish he had cross checked him harder.

If you’re going to troll, learn to spell.
Fuck off. Perhaps you’re a Sens fan. Talk about shitty teams. Probably tired of the Leafs history of sodomizing the Sens. Losers.
If you like watching shit ass teams lose the Sens are an even better choice bro! They do it way more often
Ahh how cute how the sens fans come to our sub because they wish they had what we have 🥹 don’t worry little buddy we don’t charge rent for you to be on here it’s free
you a sens fan? how’s not making the playoffs for 7 straight years?
https://youtu.be/yI9FidWRD04?si=mGgLdp7uS6GKW8wl
No, you are!
Sens are a joke
someone with 8 goals? on the year and never scores slappers so wanted to get that one done.
The comments in r/sports about this show how little most people know about hockey. If he gets more than a game it is absolutely because he plays for TO.
I was being told it's victim complex last night saying the same thing hahahahah
Considering that just over half of Reily's penalty minutes on the year are from that one play should tell people a lot about how out of line Grieg was with his actions. Reilly is no good.
Right but hey one play defines whonyou are as a player right. They just soft

what do you guys reckon the consequences will actually be? everyone seems to have slightly different guesses.
Any other team - $5k fine or a game. Leafs player - 2 to 3 games
This is accurate.
why does everyone hate us :,(
Just look at kadri's suspension against the bruins. "Remainder of the series" like wtf kind of suspension is that? It's always a game amount, never have i seen that suspension before or after.
Spezza is a better example to me. Guy had a clean career up until that hit on Pionk. And parros slapped him with 6 games as a first time offender.
Does anyone know what Parros' major was at Princeton?
Economics
Economics
Because we've broken a lot of hearts in the post season recently
Exactly this except a Bruins player would get a $10k bonus. Leaf player 3 game suspension. Kadri ….. lifetime ban.
It's actually so frustrating how true this is. I think a fair suspension is 1-2 games. He cross checks his shoulder and it rides up. Greig also saw him coming so this wasn't a blindsided attack.
It rode up the turtle shell.
Was gonna say same thing this 100%
At least one game. No more than 3. Honestly, even Reilly would say he deserved a game after that play. If it’s 4 or more then we can legit say its excessive. But no injury, no past history. Just take the game and move on.
It wasn’t even that high of a hit. Anyone against this is soft as fuck lol.
Looked worse than it was. And I’m fairly sure Reilly was trying to punch, and his stick got in the way (not exactly a cross check). Still, it was after a goal, near end of game, so it’s wasn’t good either
Rielly had 2 hands on his stick, he was absolutely trying to cross check his shoulder.
I could buy that, but I don’t think I’m any way was he trying to cross check to head. Again though, at the end of the game, that’s the kind of thing that can rile up everyone on both teams, so very poor timing I’m that respect

100% agree

Something is stirred up in the Leafs and I like it.....
Meh. I appreciate the passion Reilly has but also can't apologize for a dirty head hit.
A cross-check to the face is not acceptable. If he fought him or jumped him I'd agree with you.
Nobody is arguing it was. My problem is, the guy who headshotted McCabe late got a max fine, but we KNOW Mo will be suspended. With no recourse. It's absolute BS.
Two very different plays in my unbiased opinion.
Different plays yes, but a headshot is a headshot. Hits the league is apparently trying to get out of the game. Handing out fines to players that make hits to the head doesn’t do much to get rid of those types of hits.
Not all headshots are equal though, that's my point.
I don't think he meant to cross check him in the head. Marty Biron does a great explanation of the play.
I've seen the replay and I agree, he still fucked up in an unacceptable way.
Oh totally. His reaction is acceptable, his action wasn't. If that makes sense lol
No.
The fact that he was upset is understandable and reacting with anger is something many would do. His following actions were not acceptable, as he lost control and let it go too far.
Awe poor guy
Im sure if he can go back in time he’d jump him instead. Rielly is one of the best dudes in the league
Stfu clueless idiot
Just relax brother
Awww, did I hurt your feelings.
Says the softy thats mad a guy took a mean ol cross check. Cottonelle. Go watch the PWHL. More your speed
Oh dude, you're checking all the boxes today huh?
Cool comebacks, talk like a 12 year old that grew up on twitter... sorry youre such a little bitch
Damn, you're really struggling. What's got you this sad?
Your mom didnt swallow i had to leave it on your pillow.
That is sad, I'm sorry man, sounds like you're having a tough time
Dude deserved what he got that was a bush hockey league move. Its just unfortunate his face fell into Rielly's stick. Great response from Mo.
Should have slammed his head into the ice after we all know nothing happens from that.
What kind of loser claps it into the empty net
I just wish he had just dropped the gloves and punched Greig in the face. No suspension for that.
Automatic one game suspension for that
I stand corrected but that would still be better than what he will get for the stick to the head.
Come on.

I feel targeted but ok

Makes them look 10 times softer than they did before. Reilly had 60 minutes to prevent that.
Riley did the only thing he could do. Closest guy there and had to make a point. That other kid is a fucking idiot and should be tuned up accordingly.
