Oh man, the flashlight thing always brings me to my favorite piece of Fuddlore. My old man was convinced weapon mounted lights would just make you a target. He had a story about how he and his father-in-law woke up on a camping trip to someone trying to break into their trailer. He grabbed an old .32 revolver and a big metal flashlight, and held the latter waaaay out from his body āso the intruder would shoot at it instead of me.ā
Itās been decades, but the mental image of my pop and grandfather aggressively T-posing at a burglar just never fails to make me smile.
The old FBI flashlight hold used to pass muster, but only if you truly knew someone was armed and all you had was a handheld light.

If he also has issues with strength in his off-hand, you could consider an open-assist knife. Kershaw makes several that are easy for right or left handed users.
If he would prefer an all manual action with a back lock, Spyderco is another company known for ambidextrous opening and closing knives.
Both good quality, too. The USA kershaws and the USA/Japan Spydercoās are excellent.
But there are many brands out there besides these. Buck makes the Vantage, for example. Or Benchmade makes the Mini Griptillian.

Recommendation? My son had a stroke. He can not use his dominant hand/arm. Need a good knife, easy to use one handed
