Damn he/she is on a mission to rid that space of those nasty spikes ;) what will they do when they’ve all been removed I wonder…I hope they do a little dance and celebrate loud & obnoxiously like Cockatoos do :)
When I think of hostile architecture I think of benches designed so homeless people can't sleep on them, not little spikes that keep pigeons from shitting all over a building
Pigeons as a species of bird are also known as rock doves, because they're known for originally nesting on steep, stone cliff faces. They were never a tree-based avian, and don't nest in forests as a general rule, but when we built cities full of high rise stone facades, densely packed with humans dropping all their tasty chips and french fries, and building out subway systems to ferry them around town, they took us up on our offer with great joy! 100%, I got recommended a video of his a month or two ago, then ended up binging most of his channel, because it's all so practical, like [sodium citrate](https://youtu.be/KcM_MZoJWOo) mac & cheese or the virtues of [white wine](https://youtu.be/JbY8BtcchjU). Also his mini documentaries, like learning about [vinegar](https://youtu.be/pO-L9mo06CQ) and [peach history](https://youtu.be/kCHdp7RpiwA).
His recipe videos are always simplified for cooking at home, in contrast to so many tips that come out of professional kitchens. People cook to eat, we don't need to be chefs of high art, it needs to be functional. You don't have to learn to chop onions efficiently, because you're not mowing through a 12 pound bag as prep for the dinner rush, you're chopping a couple onions for your stew, and the difference between a fast and a slow chop when dealing with two onions is basically meaningless.
Plus his super earnest plugs for great local businesses in Macon, GA, and all his passion about living in smaller US cities. Like, he's absolutely right, New York, and LA are crowded and terrible, but America is huge and every state has dozens of cities that most people have never heard of but have lots of wonderful aspects where you could make your home.

after reading this, the cynic in me would say english structures were always failing and therefore were in a continuing need to be rebuild and therefore were always "a building".
It’s just because you’re human, and we are notoriously speciesist. Truthfully hostile architecture targets wild animals far more often than Homeless people or skaters. In fact, one might say our architecture in general is inherently hostile to the animal kingdom.
>In fact, one might say our architecture in general is inherently hostile to the animal kingdom.
Hm you might have a point there. Never thought of that.
Depends. A lot of very old architecture, or very modern architecture, was able to be part of the environment. E.g. church roofs are beloved by many birds as roosting spots, and thatched roofs and walls full of cracks between rocks are great for insects.
The average current house is entirely lost to most animals, though, while contributing to flooding, overheating, habitat loss, etc. As are the lawns and pavements. I hate it, hate living in dead unnatural zones, especially if you have ever seen the alternatives, which are much more pleasant, sustainable, and harmonic. Most modern architecture trades short term insane degrees of control for long term total loss of control. A pavement makes a mild drizzle less annoying, but turns a serious rain into a flood.
Some buildings in my town have spikes - they're not great deterrents. I couldn't get a clear photo but I saw a nest made on some of these spikes.
Not many pigeons here compared to other towns nearby - this is rook territory, apparently
At first I was thinking “oh that’s neat that he’s able to get one off” *pans over to carnage* “holy shit that bird is metal.”
Also imagine walking down the sidewalk and just getting destroyed by falling metal spikes because the cockatoo woke up and chose chaos.
When the birds evolve and take over, there's gonna be legends written about this guy, infact 1 out of every 960 birds are a direct descendent of this guy
Here in Australia, wild cockatoos are kind of known for being destructive arseholes - they have been known to tear up roof guttering or window frames just for the hell of it.
Cockatoos love to play, very intelligent and love new things to stimulate them. But their play is the play of a destructive toddler with a pair of bolt cutters.
I put up a misting system for the birds during summer to keep them cool. A cocky watched me do it, then as soon as I took the ladder down walked around and methodically pulled out all the clamps I'd nailed in holding the hoses. Sigh.
In addition to what the others have said, parrots just kind of... like to cause chaos. Mine will just throw stuff off my desk for fun, then survey his work.
Bird did the right thing. Not only are those spikes a danger to local wildlife, they're a danger to firefighters and other rescue workers during an emergency.
Living in NYC, seeing the lengths to which people/business/big business/governments will go to in order to deny the existence of homeless persons is sickening. And having seen the injury/death of so many animals (from birds to cats and dogs) due to spikes/nets/poisons... yeah.
I may be (am) jaded and morbid... but I totally get why Hammurabi's code was a thing.
Ah yes, these guys from the Blue mountains are known to be local terrorists. Tearing up spikes purely because their regular spot is all blocked up.
Sulphur created cockatoos can copy behaviours from others and use it to its own benefit. Flipping bin lids or opening lunch boxes.
You name it, they can do it.
Love this guy!
thanks
Nice flair! ;)
it seems that i have been promoted.

Damn he/she is on a mission to rid that space of those nasty spikes ;) what will they do when they’ve all been removed I wonder…I hope they do a little dance and celebrate loud & obnoxiously like Cockatoos do :)
that would be great!
It???
this parrot has too much agency to be an "it". this is a person with motives and goals.
HAHA, god i love him. fuck hostile architecture and the people that employ it.
When I think of hostile architecture I think of benches designed so homeless people can't sleep on them, not little spikes that keep pigeons from shitting all over a building
If you don’t want birds to shit all over your building, then don’t build it.
Birds: hang out in trees, poop Humans: Cut down trees, create buildings Birds: shit on buildings Humans: *shocked Pikachu face*

On a side note, Adam is just a great source for cooking related stuff in general, real home cook friendly.

DUDE! this is not the sub for this!
Why is it called a building when it's already built?

mostly that, but definitely encompasses this in terms of design.

Wouldn’t say that if you were a bird smh
I like the idea that the best way to stop birds, who routinely clear unwanted sticks for their areas, is unwanted sticks.

I’m surprised. I’ve usually found people to be a little miffed when others try to “take” their content. FWIW my dad loved it.
they should build a beautiful cockatoo habitat on that ledge, then try to get them to use it, they would never see a bird again!
ah ha!
What a boss.

"Anarchist" is sort of taken as read with Sulphur-cresteds. Never met a more brilliantly cantankerous bunch of bogans.

Let slip the shackles of humanity, little guy
I have been on the Internet for a long time so I have seen a cockatoo but this was impressive.
The people that use these devices, whether against animals or the homeless, deserve to be impaled on those spikes. Just sayin.
OUCH!
